News from Philly: Vick named starting pitcher … er, QB

Philadelphia — Talk about timing. I was planning to stop by the Eagles’ practice facility tomorrow en route to the final game of the Braves-Phillies series. My intention was to speak to Michael Vick about how graciously he has accepted his role as the Eagles’ No. 2 quarterback behind Kevin Kolb. And then …

Ten minutes ago the press box at Citizens Bank Park, which is just across the street from the Eagles’ stadium and down the road from the training complex, went nuts, and it had nothing to do with the Phillies or the Braves. The Eagles just sent out a blast e-mail announcing that coach Andy Reid has named Vick the starting quarterback. (This represents a major reversal on Reid’s part: Even after Vick had led Philly to victory Sunday over Detroit, the coach maintained that Kolb, who missed the game with a concussion, would remain No. 1.)

And I’m thinking: Good for Michael Vick.

Because I’ve never been able to dislike him as a person. Because I’ve always considered him capable of being a first-rate NFL quarterback. And because tomorrow just got a bit more interesting for yours truly.

Oh, and you’ll never guess which team visits Lincoln Financial Field — that’s the stadium across the street — on Oct. 17. Yep. The Atlanta Falcons. Them again.

Mark, all I’ll say is I’ll never understand how someone cannot dislike a person who did so much evil.

That’s all I have to say. Let the reverse-racists, racists, sycophants, apologists, and people who like me don’t understand how so many can love someone capable of so much violence and evil because he can run real fast. They can have at it.

I bow this one out.

I think what Vick did was awful, but he paid his debt to society, and he lost millions, so while I’m not happy for his success, I’m not going to claim he shouldn’t be allowed to seek it.

My old Kentucky home, I don’t agree its a cultural thing. What does that mean? I hate sociology, it is the softest and most twistable (to biases) of ALL the soft sciences. I believe Vick is a man without empathy or conscience and is only sorry he got caught and that his act of contrition is simply him trying to survive and get back into the NFL, and that he isn’t sorry at all for what he did, and would still be doing had he not been caught.

I won’t delve anymore into it.

This is great news for Michael… I thought some of his comments in the past were shallow and self-serving, but his last comments about being a grateful back-up to QB-KK were spot on. Humility and appreciation for the opportunity presented to him.

Good luck, Michael… except Oct. 17th… I hope you do well enough to lose to the Falcons in the NFC championship game ;-)

It’s strange. Vick’s two best seasons ended on this very street: The Falcons lost to the Eagles in the playoffs at the old Veterans Stadium in January 2003 and at Lincoln Financial Field in the NFC championship game in January 2005.

I don’t understand people that call themselves Eagles fans but hate the fact that Vick is the new QB. You should have known dayum well Kolb couldn’t lead that team. I even won a bet with real Eagles fans because I assured them that Kolb would everything in his power to not be starting long. I know people that fell head first off a curb and didn’t suffer a concussion but this dude gets hits once and his marbles are that scrambled. I guess we never knew because he was too busy playing jump rope on the sidelines praying nothing ever happened to McNabb.

My old Kentucky home –

Slavery and lynchings and segregation were cultural things, too…doesn’t mean they were any less wrong.

That said, I honestly can’t say I bear Vick any ill will. He has paid for his crime, and I don’t begrudge him a second chance. I hope he has learned that what he did was wrong and is able to move forward with his life and career in a positive manner and avoid such negative activities and associations in the future.

The people I bear ill will are the people who can’t accept that he did anything wrong or say he was just a victim of the system. It also makes me wonder what they might be involved in if they can condone his activities.

I don’t even really care to argue with the dog lovers anymore. I’ve accepted that no reasoned argument can convince them that dogs are no more deserving of legal protection than other equally intelligent animals like cows and monkeys.

I am just happy now that the people who consistently derided Vick’s ability as a quarterback will get to see how wrong they are. Finally Vick gets to play for a coach who knows what he’s doing offensively (even if he sucks at clock management). Finally Vick gets to play in a system where they won’t be running gadget plays every three snaps. Watch what Vick does now, no longer saddled by the league’s worst coaching staff, and no longer forced to carry a team full of mediocre players (who, with the exception of Roddy White, have accomplished NOTHING since Vick left).

I’ve been telling y’all for seven years on this blog that whichever coach is smart enough to put Vick in a traditional passing offense is going to reap the rewards. Andy Reid gets it more than any TV analyst or any coach the Falcons ever had.

I understand, but a line has to be drawn somewhere. Otherwise, no one and nothing is safe. I mean, we could also say that some cultures they are compelled to kill people with different beliefs. There are limits to freedom and respect for cultural differences and other sets of beliefs.

If the Vick is performing better than Kevin Kolb in practice and on game day, he should be starting. Vick has paid his debt to society for his dog fighting.
A bigger question is when are the the leaders of PETA (who make 6 figure salaries, plus expenses) going to be punished for killing 97 percent of the adoptable pets in its care during 2009? According to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer services, PETA killed 2,301 of the 2,363 cats and dogs it took in last year. That means PETA found a home for only one out of every 300 animals at its headquarters.
Please help animals by supporting your local animal rescue agencies in lieu of national organizations like PETA who care more about their self-enrichment rather than the animals.

Depends on which position you compare Prado at. I’d give him the nod over Polanco.

Also, McCann and Ruiz are pretty close this year, but Ruiz is having a career year, while McCann’s around his career averages. When you count that McCann spends enough innings behind the plate to get 450-500 ABs a year, while Ruiz has never gotten 400 ABs in a season, I think you’ve got to give McCann the nod too.

All right Mark here we go. Ok football & baseball, I loveVick’s game & he has a world of talent but this will divide the team like TO did years ago, Reid knows he should go with his starter unless he is still hurt. That being said let’s talk about baseball we are not getting people over plain and simple we are not playing small ball, fast ball, or any ball when it comes to RBIs. And Dunn’s LH and not much of a defensive asset, so Werth honestly might be the best fit. Makes me think our best chance of improving the OF for next year would be via a trade.

I bought my Vick eagles jersey at the beginning of last season. I think its fitting that this intelligent organization kept him and got rid of McNabb. And look at how they are reaping the benefits. The Eagles want to win. Who would start Kolb ahead of Vick? That is something bobby cox would do- oh we gotta stick with our initial plan, we gotta stay loyal to our guy. No, if your guy is ineffective, you get someone in there who can get the job done!

1) Vick has played lights out
2) He’s been solid in the locker room
3) He’s kept his nose clean off the field

I’ve never heard anyone who’s met him say he’s not a likable guy. I’d rather have him as my QB than the vaunted Brett Favre for a lot of reasons.

I like Vick, and I like Ryan. Two different type of QB’s. Vick has proven he is capable of leading a team to the NFC Championship game, Ryan has not,…yet. Who I don’t like is Roddy White. “Boy, you just get the feeling watching this game that the Braves aren’t anywhere close to the level of the Phillies. They have better pitching and twice the hitting of the Braves. Oh yeah, then throw in our shaky defense…”

I agree. I hate to say it, but the Braves team of June and July looks like a real mirage now. This current Braves team is no different from the .500 teams of the last three seasons. I got suckered in by the solid pitching and late-inning magic of the summer, but it seems to have run out.

Charlie Manuel sent his three aces to face the Braves in this series. Bobby Cox counters with two rookie pitchers to start this series and a lineup that can’t hit quality starters. He is going to manage the Braves out of the playoff race. It is time for him to take his “everything will work itself out “attitude to the farm. I can’t wait until the 7th inning for a relief pitcher to come in the game so they can score some runs

Soon the Eagles can discover the joys of Vickdom: the stunting ballhog, the moody inconsistency, the surly contempt for fans… and the difficulties of reworking your whole playbook when your 1000-yd. rushing quarterback goes out with a leg injury. There are some massive DLs out there, and 30-yr-old bones break easier than 20-yr-old ones do.

I told you Vick would be back better than ever and I was right, and here you are complaining aout Ryan after FORCING comparisons of Ryan to Tom Brady. What a f’in joke, and I told you so. Ryan is a good, above average QB, but lets face the facts, he’s no Mike Vick.

Yeah, Vick was coddled, had bad coaching (except for Dan Reeves), and yes, he relied on his out of this world football talents instead of putting in the proper work. But that’s all hindsight now. Its a new beginning for Vick, who is focused and HUMBLED. The man thought he could do anything and it blew up in his face.

Here’s one for ya…don’t be surprised if the Eagles make it to the SB. Vick will have the Comeback Player of the Year trophy locked down, and he already has MVP….again..MVP numbers. I know its early, but Vick has that kind of ability.

Then, people will start saying things like he doesn’t have anyone on the team helping him. Then he will start with the scrambling first before looking downfield and the fumbling in the backfield. Then people will be talking about the bad coaching in Philly. Same story, seen and heard it all before.

I feel like everyone deserves a second chance. Most people convicted of such a horrendous crime would face a long climb back in any occupation if their sins were made public and I wish him the best on his hopeful path to redemption! What bothers me even more than his crimes are the sickos that try to minimize them with statements such as “it’s not like he robbed a store” or “it’s a cultural thing”. Yes, worse things happen but that doesn’t minimize how horrible his actions were (including the outright lies to his boss- was that a “cultural thing”). I would rather have MV living beside me and QBing my team than one of these people so morally bankrupt they try to those explain or minimize why it wasn’t so bad It was a very horrible thing period, but anyone defending his past is harming his public persona and making it harder for him.

Nothing is more inspiring than a person who has made horrible choices turning their life around. But nothing is more disgusting than watching the people trailing after him trying to make horrible choices seem like no big thing. I hope MV is moving on to turning it around and I feel there’s little hope for anyone who sees his past actions of torture (torture because of the horrendous pain they caused helpless animals) as no big deal because worse things happen. It’s like saying “heck I read that some guy was a serial killer and murdered 50 people, so what’s the big deal if I murdered one person”. There’s a spectrum here definitely, but if you can’t recognize when something crosses the spectrum into evil then God help you. I wish MV all the luck in the world and hope he can be a role model for turning your life around. For those of you who see this as no biggie, I hope you mature and find a better path. No wonder there’s so much crime in this world if so many are running around thinking their crimes not so bad because worse crimes are committed!!!!

Michael Vick went to jail for illegal gambling not dog fighting. The law obviously doesn’t hold animals in high regard, which is why dog fighting is only a misdemeanor. There are much more egregious crimes than dog fighting (e.g. DUI). We all know people that have gotten behind the wheel of a motor vehicle while intoxicated; potentially killing other HUMAN BEINGS…talk about sick, disgusting and irresponsible. It’s amazing at how much hate people have for such a dynamic player who, in football, has done nothing but entertain (save for one incident where he gave the finger….likely to one of you bloggers who harness so much hate). What he did off the field has nothing to do with what he does on the field. Personally, I don’t like atheletes for who they are when they’re not playing. There’s no defense for animal cruelty but their is a defense on how a person is reared (raised for the verbally challenged) and the culture that a person is brought up in. In the bible it says that God only holds us accountable for what we know. If a person is raised to think that something is “not a big deal” and “accepted” in their community, how does he know any better? The real test for Vick now is being sure he is surrounded with positive influences in life in order to avoid anything else he may not have been raised to understand as being wrong.

Indifferent

I don’t care for Vick the person but the numb skulls who like to say that all he can do is run and can’t pass, I suggest you go look at his passing numbers this season as well as over his career and compare them to certain starters in the league like oh I don’t know, perhaps Matt Ryan? Notice how the golden boy currently running the show for the Falcons isn’t much better in the passing department than Vick. And Ryan arguably has far better options in the receiver corps. Difference being Vick who has a far stronger arm can also win a game with his legs. I know who I’d want starting for me.

Sec346 says it all

Seriously, those of you who minimize his actions or focus on the “gambling” conviction must have buried your head in the sand and avoided his confession which included acts of torture and killing of numerous dogs. No doubt he didn’t want to admit anything too bad until lie detectors forced him to fess up to get the deal he did. And yeah, if it makes you feel better Timothy mcveigh committed a much worse crime. And he got the death penalty for it! This isn’t about MV to me, it’s about the soulless people who refuse to accept the horrendous nature of what he did. All that being said, I believe MV has a right to turn his life around. The only thing that makes me pull against him is the blind supporters who minimize his crime.

NFL Football is a business 1st. #1 Goal is to make money. Put the players on the field that can help you win, fill up the stadium, maintain tv coverage for your team = make money. Most of you sports fans because of your emotions would make terrible team owners, coaches and gm’s. NFL is just like Hollywood in how bad behavior brings in more money. Its just the way it is.

Come on TXdawg

So if it was a cultural thing and he didn’t know better why did he lie to the commish? Let’s all get this straight, regardless of what illegal activities your culture or even your family for that matter teaches you, knowing wrong from right is pretty simple. People lie when they know they are doing wrong. Committing a crime because it’s part of your culture does not make the crime less wrong. By your line of reasoning We should look at child abusers in a different light because most of them were abused as children. Let’s bring back some pressure on people to choose the right path regardless of their “culture” or history and do what’s right. Otherwise we live in a spiraling society that lives by “well this was done to me so I can do it to the next guy”. That’s how 12 year olds think, not grown men!!! There are plenty of people who lived side by side in MV’s “culture” who walked away knowing it was sick to kill dogs and taking the right path. MV stood up and said it was wrong, why can’t you? Again, pulling for MV to become a beacon of right against this kind of mentality!

I for one was pissed at Mike for the lies, and the lack of professionalism…out partying and not preparing for the games, and for what he could have accomplished.

I also was angry at the in humane way he treated the dogs, both the animals that fought, and the dogs that got tore up as he was using them as bait/ training for the fighting dogs.

Imagine the terror of a passive dog being thrown into that ring with killer dogs…..similar to be thrown to the Lions for fun and sport in Roman days…..a house pet for gosh sakes.

All that said……. yes he screwed up big time….but what happened next is he was humiliated for his actions, paid a huge price as a person, as an athlete, and as a rich person.

I have to look at myself and say, I make mistakes, and frankly so did Mike…… He paid his debt, lost almost everything, and is starting out again.

So today I have to respect the change he made, the time he was in jail, and the courage he will need to live with his mistakes and move on.

He is an exciting football player to watch……. AND…….. reluctantly I wish him well, why reluctantly…..mostly because he would improve my team……… the Falcons !

Remember last year though he was not the #1 pick for nothing. Last I recall 2 players went before Ryan just saying Vick is a must have. Two struggling franchises passed on Ryan and no one is condemning them for not drafting Ryan. The Eagles are like Vick said when he signed a first class organization the puts winng has a high priority. Braves r through cook and ready to be sent home. this is a reflection of the manager had a 7 games leads did nothing to cushion it. first thing hayward should have been hitting third or cleanup prado hit second. then of all thing put Mclouth back in the lineup. trade blanco for a less bat. i’am not going in SS situation which didn’t make any sense at all.

“.Please help me understand why this is news worthy in the AJC sports pages????”

Atlanta has had pro sports teams for about 45 years. In that time, how many superstars have ever played in this city? You can probably count them on one hand — maybe on one Antonio Alfonseca hand — and Vick is one of them.

UGAbugkiller, you sir, are a remarkable dolt. How ironic it is that you sit there with your sanctimonious attitude and criticize anyone. Personally I believe the world would be far better served if you and all of your ilk were not in it. You are a greater detriment to society than Vick by several orders of magnitude. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Come on Bradley. You can’t tell me deep down in your gut you didn’t think your boy was going to end up the starter in Philly the moment you heard they traded McNabb!Be honest

My only point is that the AJC forgetes Michae Vick is the enemy now. If this were the Bulldogs, would you see the blah blah blah? HELL NO. The Falcons are a playoff team this year and we would not have done what we did in 08 and 09 if Vick were QB. That’s my only point, I just wish people shared my passion for the Falcons like they do for their pathetic Bulldogs.

I hope he doesn’t blow “this” opportunity, like he did with the Falcons, with his choices of personnal passtimes.
I never thought that he was that good of a QB, but he does have superior athletic ability.
If he hasn’t been injured or demoted by the time the Falcons get to Philly, I hope that the Falcons can stuff him into the turf.

So where does Kolb end up, Vikings? Jags? Carolina? Cardinals? Who else is hurting for a QB? I don’t see the Eagles paying Kolb his big $$$ to sit on the bench, he makes more than Vick. He’s probably not to excited about staying in Philly anyway.

I think they should try to keep Kolb happy, the way Vick throws his body around like a RB, he was prone to injury while here in Atlanta.

No way Vick comes back to Atlanta, just not going to happen. Falcons have moved on. There are a lot of teams that will be interested

As a Patriots fan first for all my life being from Mass, and a Falcons fan since the days of Bartowksi, Andrews, Cain, Francis, and Gritz Blitz . .. ..I now have to officiallly say that the AJC Vick debate has overtaken the Pats Tape-Gate debate for longevity. Never thought that would happen as that Tape-Gate controversy was a very National thing where the Pats fans stood alone against pretty much every other team’s fans. Not that folks don’t type in things like Bellicheat on Pats posts . … . .but I just don’t see the same steam in the arguments. This Vick debate probably will rage on for quite a while. Of course since many see Ryan as the “annointed successor of Vick” . . I think if he does not perform exceptionally well . . ..and Vick does just plain well . . . .this will debate will continue to be fed.

I told ya’ll this man would be back, better than ever. He is hungry, has been humbled, is looking to prove the haters wrong. Some in the national media cannot stand it, lol!!! I’m glad he landed in Philly with a real football organization with real coaches.

Now that Vick has landed a starting position, can you Vick supporters stop blaming Blank,TD, Smith, and Ryan for Vick’s self-imposed problems? None of them forced him to commit felonies, and once arrested, convicted and sent to prison, they did what they had to do.

The AJC continue to write about vick the same person you slammed and said would play in the cfl.Whats wrong? the falcons don’t have a player worthy to talk about? Last i checked vick plays for philly not atlanta but for some reason you continue to make him(mv7)the headlines.I get it,you want the vick bashers to come out.Well guess what? AJC and all the vick haters were WRONG and are still trying to condenm the man from his past.Let it go its done and over with from yesteryears. Now we will see who will win or go to the superbowl first, vick or ryan. All i gotta say is mr blank, you shouldn’t have been decieved from the talk and gossip of all the vick bashers.I hope he makes you regret your dumb choice to let him go.I hate the punk falcons and hope they never win….

I think one of the core issues is that once Vick and Petrino left the falcons, and Blank was forced to replace a GM, Coach, and QB that he did not hire at least one black guy and certain fans felt like he “owed” them. I think Blank was under the gun and hired the best available guys he could find. Keep in mind several GM’s and Coaches turned him down, the team was a mess, but fortunately he was able to find a GM, Coach, and QB that did a surprising job, only for some, they are the wrong color.

@Gregkennesaw,i understand your point your right. Thanks for bringing a little light to my eyes. Two years is too long to wait and he did what he had to do.But dang! wish we would have picked flacco instead.

And also Gregkennasaw, its not a black and white thang because the statement “they are the wrong color” is just how both colors look at it.(it goes both ways).

I’m not a fan of shooting dogs or even the way dogs are put down at many shelters. But what they do is light years away from electrocuting and hanging dogs, for what seems to have been the fun of it. You are making excuses for a monster because he can run fast with a little brown ball. Yes, Vick’s done his time and I suppose he will make a lot more money playing. But long after his career is over he will be remembered as a man who tortured animals. This, not his running stats or his throws or his brilliance on the field. He’ll just be that football player who murdered dogs. A fine addition to the history of football.

LOL. I hope you Philly fans are enjoying this. Welcome to the most polarizing sports figure you will ever see. Enjoy all the Vick apologists and haters that will follow his every move. I’m glad he is yours now. As a Falcons fan I’m glad we no longer have to deal with it…except when we play against him in a few weeks.

I wonder if in Philadelphia they are having blogs about their former Quarterback or if they are writing about the currents quarterback on their roster.

Good for Vick!!!! I think that Andy Reid is a liar and the Vick promotion to starter is something that Reid was inevitably planning to do ever since the Eagles acquired Vick, even while Donovan McNabb was the starter. I believe Reid got rid of McNabb because he wanted Vick at the helm from the very beginning. Reid was simply waiting and hoping for Vick to regain his form he had in Atlanta, and now Michael has surpassed that form. Two weeks ago when I blogged that Vick was the fifth best qb in the league, this was before Vick had his two spectacular games. As of right now, Vick was regained his spot as the fifth best qb in the league behind Brees, Brady, Peyton and Farve. Vick is right there and will continue to improve until he becomes the best quarterback in the league. DO NOT BE SURPRISED AT ALL IF MICK VICK WINS THIS YEARS LEAGUE MVP HONORS. Michael great to see you back as top dog and sheriff of the league once again.
