OK, folks, your wish is granted: Freddie Freeman gets the call

I mentioned yesterday that Freddie was almost ready. Today the Braves made it official: Freddie Freeman, the 20-year-old first baseman, will be promoted to the majors Wednesday, which is Sept. 1, which is the day big-league rosters can expand to 40.

I’m like you: I want to see the guy play. But I’m not sure how much we will. The Braves already have a new first baseman in Derrek Lee and a backup plan in Troy Glaus. But this has been, as we’ve noted a time or two, a stunning season.

Who would have predicted that Glaus, so bad in April, would be the National League’s May player of the month? Who saw Jonny Venters coming? Who envisioned Omar Infante as an All-Star? Who figured a career utility man might well lead the National League in hitting? Who guessed a team without Chipper Jones leading the reigning National League champion by three games with 31 to play?

So, as much as I’m trying to tamp down civic enthusiasm regarding Mr. FF, I’d be remiss if I didn’t say: Given the tenor of our times, it would only make sense if Freeman gets pushed into the lineup as a callow rookie — and then is named MVP of the 2010 Fall Classic. Not saying it will happen that way. Just saying that, with these Braves, pretty much anything could.

I agree with you Mark that he will probably not play much but the next month will hopefully give him the feeling that he belongs here and will go a long way in building confidence for 2011. I think seeing the young guys here and doing well just makes us fans remember that maybe it isn’t always about the money side of the business.

I have made few comments about the Braves this year. Mostly ’cause I can not truly understand them. I can not think of a reason we could have expected them to be this good. So it will not surprise me, given no reason to expect as much, that FF will be the post season MVP. I could not have seen it coming so I should have known it was coming.

I’m am excited about the future of this team I feel like the entire right side of the diamond and catcher is in set with reasonable contracts for the next 3 years. Regarding 2011 Gonzalez, Chipper, and Infante should be able to handle SS and 3rd. Biggest concerns are LF and CF. Mark, do you know who we have in the minors ready to play either position?

The concern right now should be the poor quality of the starting pitching . Only Hudson can be counted as consistently reliable at this

You heard it from me first. If anyone wants to go ahead and make your plans, you can take this to the bank. It will be Braves, Padres, Reds, and Phillies(wild card) in the NL playoffs. Braves will start with the Padres (since they can’t play the Phillies-own division) and take that. Then after the Reds take the Phils, the Braves will take care of the Reds to become NL champs. The BIG ONE will have the Braves and the Yankees, and I’m reserving that prediction for when I get a “feel” for it.

Braves attendance in a nutshell: It has improved this season, but not by as much as you’d expect. Much of this has to do with the economy. Much also has to do with the marketplace. Traffic can be awful. The heat has been oppressive. And a bunch of folks grew up watching the Braves on TBS and support the team fervently while not actually attending many games.

The Braves draw very well on Saturday night (less traffic), not so well during the week, especially after school starts. And public schools started earlier than ever this year.

Don’t forget that both Glaus and Lee are hit from the right side and Freeman is a LEFTY from the plate? I think that means he will get more playing time than most might envision, but it will be up to him how much and that will depend on productivity. He is an extra bat off the bench at the very least and that is never a bad thing.

Mark…from a CNNSI column by Joe Lemire talking about the Reds phenom Aroldis Chapman who’s been clocked at 105…not on the interstate either, on the mound..

Chapman, who has allowed just two earned runs in his last 21-2/3 minor league innings, headlines the list of September call-ups in the annual late-season rite of passage for promising young players who get a taste of the majors when rosters expand from 25 players to 40. In Chapman’s case, his promotion comes one day in advance of Sept. 1, making him eligible for the Reds’ postseason roster should they stave off a late charge by the Cardinals. (A few others on the list below, even if they’re called up in September, could participate in the playoffs as replacements for players who are on the disabled list.)

So that sounds like the only way FF can play postseason is by DL’ing someone on the active roster? Of course we have two fragile first basemen so that shouldn’t be too difficult.

You do realize it was not that long ago, 2002 in fact that the Phillies only averaged 19,977 a game? It is only in the last couple of years that Phillies fans have really supported their team. Kinda of like when the Braves started their run of 14 straight. We averaged 47,960 a night in 93′. 44,548 in 94′ and on. If the Phillies don’t make the playoffs this year I would imagine your attendance would drop next year. That said, I wish we filled Turner Field every night. The nights it is filled are electric. You can see Braves fans in every ballpark in America. This has been a great year to watch and follow the Braves. I think it will come down to the final three games of the year. And I think the Braves will take it. But we shall see.

Turner Field is in a terrible location, both area-wise and traffic-wise. Traffic is dreadful, especially during the week. That has to effect attendance, as I know personally leaving work at 6 it’s impossible to get home and then to a game.

CBP is much more convenient to get to, and where Philadelphia traffic can be bad, it’s not Atlanta bad.

I grew up both a Braves and Phils fan in NJ. (Different divisions + Phillies games on PRISM vs the Braves on TBS meant I could watch way more Braves games than Phillies) So I tend to have a kind of non-biased view when it comes to arguments between the two.

It’s great to see the fans support the Phillies with their attendance, but that’s more of an indication that they’ve been to two straight WS vs undying devotion to the team. (The Phillies, historically, outside of year 1 of CBP and the past 3 seasons, are in the bottom half to bottom of attendance.)

The Braves were in the top 4 of attendance from 92 – 2000. Considering from 2000 until now there’s what, 1+ million more people in the area, it’s kind of surprising as to the decrease in attendance.

I’d have to point at difficulty of getting to the game, as well as so many transplants supporting their old “home” teams versus cheering on the Atlanta club. (eg, all of the NY transplants supporting the Yankees)

McFann…………….what else would you call trying to make a back handed snag..instead of shifting his body over to block a wild pitch? It’s called LACK OF EFFORT.

I’m not saying that McCann is a lazy ball player. I’m saying that for whatever reason, when it comes to wild pitches, McCann tries too often to do the back handed thing………when he needs to block the wild pitch when runners are on base.

Just because his defense is probably average at best……does not mean that I dont love his hitting. I’ve been a McCann supporter from day one. Why? Because he rakes at the plate. I can live with his “average” defense….as long as he continues to rake at the plate.

By the way, wasnt you the one who wanted Bobby Cox to drop McCann to the #8 slot in the batting order last year when he was slumping? You were quick to be all over McCann during that time

One thing that is overlooked is the impact that a potential upcoming injury by either the Braves or Phillies could have on the race to the finish. These last 31 games will be more magnified.

DEFENSE. The Phillies play MUCH BETTER defense than we do. However, our defense has improved with Ankiel playing center (dude’s arm is going to come into play when it comes to preventing runners from taking an extra base)……..Prado moving to 3rd to replace Chipper (who is way past his prime)…….along with Lee taking over for Glaus (who simply SUCKED playing 1st).

I want to see the Braves win. I feel that this Braves team has the ability to win the division.

However, until this Braves team PROVES that they can deal with the PRESSURE that the Phillies have PROVEN in the past 3 years that they can bring at the end of the season……………the Phillies have to be respected and taken seriously.

The Braves lost 7 games in a row at the end of 2009 (talk about going out with a whimper), despite being in the wild card chase. The Phillies were down 7 with 17 left and ran the Mets down a couple of years ago to win the division.

My point is, this thing is not in the bag. Far from it. Until we PROVE it, the Phillies are the favorite. A 3 game lead with 31 left aint SH1T! There is A LOT of baseball left to be played.

joemoedee

@Phillies – I agree to a certain extent. A series against the Mets should be a large draw no matter what, especially considering the Braves leading the division. However as others have pointed out, a very large majority of Braves fans live 20-40 miles away from Turner Field. So to leave work, go home, get the family and go to a game is almost impossible given the traffic here. And then to go to the area Turner Field is located at night is sketchy, at best. Watching on TV is a much better option during the week, sadly.

@bradley’s stache – The Red Sox won in spite of Francona, much like the Phillies win in spite of Manuel. Neither are really game changers (for the better, at least) from the manager position.

You know what I think is funny is that the Phillies got their “big guns” back and have been scuffling for runs just like they were BEFORE their recent run. Sure they swept the Padres over the weekend but only one game had more than 3 runs scored. The Phillies have a lot of names who aren;t getting the job done…that may be good for selling out games but it ain’t winning games. Hopefully we can put a little daylight between us this week so we won’t have to suffer these insufferable yankee morons. It would be nice to just ignore them but just like a backed up sewer line, you can ignore them but they are still an affront to the senses.

Regarding MD’s 4:13 comment: what national media types and others who don’t think about…so here are the real issues: yes, Braves weekday attendance sucks; school started back on Aug 4, which is criminal; but overall, look at our surroundings vs. what other major cities have–Wrigley, Cincy, even Milwaukee, etc. Their downtown or at least area surrounding the club is vibrant. ATL is a deadzone. most NE or MW towns don’t start school until after Labor Day. If i had $20M i would raze every area around the TED, then put 15-20 restaurants and bars that would draw people there and keep them there. Then you would see weekday attendance increase by 10K and everyone would hail me as a great genius. So why has this not yet been done???

to be honest the braves are looking like the 2003 marlins…. but until you get that parade it’s only a dream. the phils are struggling right now. there’s no other way to put it. but we are still the defending nl champs until somebody knocks us off or we don’t get in of course. we’ve taken on all comers in recent years. the rockies, the dodgers, the rays and the yankees. we’ve heard it from cubs fans, cards fans, redsox nation, marlin fans, yankee fans and even rays fans(who?) about how the phillies aren’t really that good. and you know what… we don’t care! when the phillies are right nobody is messing with the phillies. howard/chase are rusty still and a little banged up. they will heat up. trust me. and before i finish this post howard goes deep wih a 3run shot.

I’ve lived and been all over this country. Despite the traffic problems, I think Atlanta is one of the really great cities in the USA. Why? First the people are great, the nightlife is fantastic, food superb, the weather is great, it’s a cradle of southern rock music (anyone remember those free Allman Brothers concert in the park?), has great universities, has growth/economic opportunity, the diversity of its people who get along, it’s in the heart of the south, has so many beautiful women, and of course it is home to the Braves.

Philadelphia does not even come close.

i dont understand why people make a big deal of attendance in this town. Its a corporate metro area – I sure have too much to do drive 30mins – 1hr to watch something that looks better on TV anyways. I’m not attending anything football, basketball, baseball if I’m not sitting in the first 10 rows in the infield, near the 50 yardline or center court – waste of time otherwise.

Mark, even in the years when the Braves were winning division titles every year, attendance always dropped off when school went back. Joe, Skip. (God rest his soul) Pete and Don used to say that on TBS games all the time.

Bottom line: This team is playing great. Unless an absolute collapse happens, we will make the playoffs. Now, if we can just all hold our collective breath during the killer DC/Phillies/NY road trip in Sept, all will be fine. Hopefully we can fatten our lead by a few more games before then, so even if we have a not so great trip, it wont matter.

Oh, and Phillies trolls on this board: Why dont you guys just admit already that both the Braves and Phillies are good teams, who will likely settle this in the NLCS? One is going to win the NL East, the other the wild card. I hope we see a Braves-Phils NLCS, with the Braves as the East champs of course. I think it will be a great series.

The problem is — Why didn’t he get the call weeks and weeks and weeks ago when Glaus stopped producing. Of course, we do not know whether or not Freeman would have hit — And, if he had not, you certainly would not have wanted to have kept him up and kept using him and possibly damaged his development. But, when the Braves were getting almost no production from First Base, did they not bring him up and given him a try – to see what happened. He may have hit great and helped to carry the Braves for the remainder of the season. They had almost nothing to lose and everything to gain if they had given it a try. Who knows how many losses this may have cost them by playing Glaus on and on and on. This is just another example of Bobby Cox’s slowness to make changes that are obvious to almost everyone. For an obvious needed change, it takes Cox weeks, sometimes months, sometimes never.
Even now with Cox managing, with Freeman coming up in September, he may not get any playing time -even if Lee does not produce. Lee is starting hit some, but it seems to be mainly in games that we are winning by big magins. In how many close games with good pitching, has he hit??

Phillies, Class of the NL, re: attendance: It could be because Philadelphia has about three times as many people living in the city than Atlanta. 90% of the Atlanta metro area lives outside of the city, which means people must drive 30 miles or more to get to the game during rush hour (more than an hour’s driving for most people). The Braves have always been a medium-market team in terms of attendance, but they have television contracts with three networks (not counting the nationally televised games).
