I mentioned yesterday that Freddie was almost ready. Today the Braves made it official: Freddie Freeman, the 20-year-old first baseman, will be promoted to the majors Wednesday, which is Sept. 1, which is the day big-league rosters can expand to 40.
I’m like you: I want to see the guy play. But I’m not sure how much we will. The Braves already have a new first baseman in Derrek Lee and a backup plan in Troy Glaus. But this has been, as we’ve noted a time or two, a stunning season.
Who would have predicted that Glaus, so bad in April, would be the National League’s May player of the month? Who saw Jonny Venters coming? Who envisioned Omar Infante as an All-Star? Who figured a career utility man might well lead the National League in hitting? Who guessed a team without Chipper Jones leading the reigning National League champion by three games with 31 to play?
So, as much as I’m trying to tamp down civic enthusiasm regarding Mr. FF, I’d be remiss if I didn’t say: Given the tenor of our times, it would only make sense if Freeman gets pushed into the lineup as a callow rookie — and then is named MVP of the 2010 Fall Classic. Not saying it will happen that way. Just saying that, with these Braves, pretty much anything could.

You know what I think is funny is that the Phillies got their “big guns” back and have been scuffling for runs just like they were BEFORE their recent run. Sure they swept the Padres over the weekend but only one game had more than 3 runs scored. The Phillies have a lot of names who aren;t getting the job done…that may be good for selling out games but it ain’t winning games. Hopefully we can put a little daylight between us this week so we won’t have to suffer these insufferable yankee morons. It would be nice to just ignore them but just like a backed up sewer line, you can ignore them but they are still an affront to the senses.
Go Braves…….and I’m STILL laughing at the Juggernaut

Mark,
Do you think McLouth can still turn it around? Quite often I see him make outs the way a pitcher would…soft ground-outs. I remember Cabrera started the same way but he seems to have turned it around.

Lee is swinging the bat right now so I’m not sure how much he will play. Spot starts to give Lee some rest on his back and lots of pitch hitting. Just my guess.

A little blowout trivia: Michael tucker, who hit the first Braves homer at turner field, now plays for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Much like my prized Montgomery Biscuits t shirt, I really want one with a Blue Crab.

Braves have really hammered the Mets in these past 3-4 games. My guess is that Phillies are gonna have tough games since Dodgers and Rockies (they play make-up game on Thurs) will see these games as their last chance to make some ground for the wild card. This week may be our chance to gain some ground.

Regarding MD’s 4:13 comment: what national media types and others who don’t think about…so here are the real issues: yes, Braves weekday attendance sucks; school started back on Aug 4, which is criminal; but overall, look at our surroundings vs. what other major cities have–Wrigley, Cincy, even Milwaukee, etc. Their downtown or at least area surrounding the club is vibrant. ATL is a deadzone. most NE or MW towns don’t start school until after Labor Day. If i had $20M i would raze every area around the TED, then put 15-20 restaurants and bars that would draw people there and keep them there. Then you would see weekday attendance increase by 10K and everyone would hail me as a great genius. So why has this not yet been done???
and mostly, like I said,

to be honest the braves are looking like the 2003 marlins…. but until you get that parade it’s only a dream. the phils are struggling right now. there’s no other way to put it. but we are still the defending nl champs until somebody knocks us off or we don’t get in of course. we’ve taken on all comers in recent years. the rockies, the dodgers, the rays and the yankees. we’ve heard it from cubs fans, cards fans, redsox nation, marlin fans, yankee fans and even rays fans(who?) about how the phillies aren’t really that good. and you know what… we don’t care! when the phillies are right nobody is messing with the phillies. howard/chase are rusty still and a little banged up. they will heat up. trust me. and before i finish this post howard goes deep wih a 3run shot.

I’ve lived and been all over this country. Despite the traffic problems, I think Atlanta is one of the really great cities in the USA. Why? First the people are great, the nightlife is fantastic, food superb, the weather is great, it’s a cradle of southern rock music (anyone remember those free Allman Brothers concert in the park?), has great universities, has growth/economic opportunity, the diversity of its people who get along, it’s in the heart of the south, has so many beautiful women, and of course it is home to the Braves.
Philadelphia does not even come close.

i dont understand why people make a big deal of attendance in this town. Its a corporate metro area – I sure have too much to do drive 30mins – 1hr to watch something that looks better on TV anyways. I’m not attending anything football, basketball, baseball if I’m not sitting in the first 10 rows in the infield, near the 50 yardline or center court – waste of time otherwise.

Freeman will start next year, and so will Infante and Prado. If Chipper comes back, Infante will start in LF; if not, then he will start at 2b. The real question is who will play CF, and who will be the closer.

I’m glad Freeman is in Atlanta and I hope they give him a shot at 1B.
Jeff Francoeur is still very young and could still be a top MLB player one day. Braves & Mets gave up on him too early I believe. I guess we will see…
