OK, folks, your wish is granted: Freddie Freeman gets the call

I mentioned yesterday that Freddie was almost ready. Today the Braves made it official: Freddie Freeman, the 20-year-old first baseman, will be promoted to the majors Wednesday, which is Sept. 1, which is the day big-league rosters can expand to 40.

I’m like you: I want to see the guy play. But I’m not sure how much we will. The Braves already have a new first baseman in Derrek Lee and a backup plan in Troy Glaus. But this has been, as we’ve noted a time or two, a stunning season.

Who would have predicted that Glaus, so bad in April, would be the National League’s May player of the month? Who saw Jonny Venters coming? Who envisioned Omar Infante as an All-Star? Who figured a career utility man might well lead the National League in hitting? Who guessed a team without Chipper Jones leading the reigning National League champion by three games with 31 to play?

So, as much as I’m trying to tamp down civic enthusiasm regarding Mr. FF, I’d be remiss if I didn’t say: Given the tenor of our times, it would only make sense if Freeman gets pushed into the lineup as a callow rookie — and then is named MVP of the 2010 Fall Classic. Not saying it will happen that way. Just saying that, with these Braves, pretty much anything could.

JOEMOE, the redsoxs started to win shortly after his arrival. Why are you saying:
@bradley’s stache – The Red Sox won in spite of Francona, much like the Phillies win in spite of Manuel. Neither are really game changers (for the better, at least) from the manager position.

What do you mean? Francona had a tougher time to manage in the playoffs than Manuel. Are you saying that the two men are not good managers?

“Who guessed a team without Chipper Jones leading the reigning National League champion by three games with 31 to play?”

I didn’t just guess…I predicted the Braves would benefit from getting the worst #3 hitter in the majors out of the lineup. Took a season ending injury for the Booger Miner, Cox, to do it then!

I expect to see Freeman in the lineup tomorrow night against Pelfrey. Give Lee a rest. Then, Lee will play Thurs against the lefty.

I’m a lifelong Braves fan, but there is no defending the attendance (or crappy attendance) at The Ted. Atlanta doesn’t deserve this team.

15th in payroll, 14th in attendance. Liberty gets what they pay for.

Adam, there are no less than a hundred reasons why, Don’t you read these blogs? They are going to draw 3 million by season’s end. Not bad for a city about the size of Cincinnati.

So many excuses – the traffic, the school sessions, the heat, the economy. While these are all real scenarios, other cities find a way to make it there. Last night was embarassing. No first place team should be playing in front of such a small crowd.

Also seriously why aren’t there more people at Turner Field tonight? This is an embarrassment.

To be eligible for a team’s playoff roster a player must be on either a)the 25 man active roster, b)the disabled list, c)the bereavement list, d)the suspended list as of August 31st at midnight.

Unless they’ve changed the rules, Freeman won’t be eligible.

Heath’s an idiot. They pay for what they get? Atlanta has had a first place team for most of the season and they have 18,000 fans at the game yesterday and probably less than that tonight. Against the Nats they had less than 16,000 fans at one of the games.

Seriously it’s time to move the Braves to another city that appreciates them. Maybe Charlotte deserves a chance.

Hey, Adam. I totally get what you’re saying, and I mostly agree with you. But don’t forget that GA’s economy pretty much stinks right now. And it’s a school night. For myself I’m practically broke right now, while I scramble to collect rent for September. But, as soon as I can, I plan to get back down there to see the Braves play. I’m going to try to go to more than one game during the Cards series for sure. It’s just not easy to get the money together. It’s killing me right now that I can’t be there tonight, as I see on TV a TON of great seats available.

Bunting Diaz with a runner at 2nd in scoring position? Don’t get it Bobby…Diaz is killing the ball and you have him bunting?

So a lead off double yields nothing….Diaz might have driven him in from 2nd…Give us a break Bobby…

I think you are probably going to see Freddie some against right handers. Bobby has showed he will play rookies if he thinks they are good enough. He’s played Heyward all year even injured, Johnny Venters, Mike Minor. Why not Freddie Freeman?

I have been totally impressed by Mike Minor. I guess all of those so called experts that were trashing the Braves for picking him 7th in the draft are eating crow now.
