Live from the ballyard: Call Thumb No. 158 and win a T-shirt!

I’d all but abandoned hope. There Bobby Cox was, 32 games remaining as a big-league manager, and he was stuck on 156 ejections. My sweet dream was that the Thumb King would reach 162 before he retires, which would make him the only man who could ever truthfully say, “I wasn’t around for the end a season’s worth of games.”

Forget Cy Young and his 511 wins. Forget Joe D. and 56 straight. I was thinking 162 ejections would be the standard to end standards. I was thinking 162 heave-hos would impel the folks in Cooperstown to waive the waiting period and induct the crusty skipper posthaste..

But I had, as noted, begun to doubt the great man. His once-furious pursuit of history had slowed to a crawl. He was tossed only three times through 129 games, and I’d begun to think our roaring lion had resigned himself to going out with a whimper.

Then he got tossed Sunday, which was nice. But even with No. 157 in the book, my spirits were so low as to be a flickering ember.

Then I walked into the Braves’ clubhouse Monday and saw this written on a whiteboard:

“HP – B. Davidson.”

And hope sprang anew. Bob Davidson, known variously as Balkin’ Bob or Balk-a-day Bob, is famous for his quick trigger, and he, as noted last month by Atlanta writer Thomas Lake in a fine profile of Cox for Sports Illustrated, shares the record for most Cox ejections with six.

And here I’m thinking: Balk-a-day Bob in town for four games … two ejections easy, possibly three … Cox then has 159 with 28 pressurized games remaining. In sum, I’m thinking:

There’s still a shot.

And with that, I’ll open the figurative floor for questions, comments and ejection projections. Let the record show that yours truly has “bottom of the fourth” in tonight’s Thumb Pool. But I’m not, as you might have heard, much good at predicting. So I’m asking you to step right and make your picks. And I thank you, as ever, in advance.

Oh, and by popular demand: We’ve made this a contest. Call the correct half-inning — we’ll cut off entries after the third, but you can predict a early ejection now — and WIN A T-SHIRT! (Of some sort.)

Ah, the ole balker is behind the plate, huh. interesting as i recall inquiring from you as to his status.

If the teams didn’t show up, would anyone pay to watch the umpires? The bunch of Bozos’ in the majors now seem to believe that without them there wouldn’t be a game. Whatever happened to Eric Gregg? He would occassionally get caught out of position because of his extreme heft but he was very entertaining…between innings with the San Diego Chicken.

I think Bobby gets tossed in two games against the Mets, both on balks, one by Hudson, one by Hanson. Bobby protects his players, especially vets, if Hudson gets called I think we all know what will happen next. Both guys are pretty quick on the move for righties. I am also holding out hope for 162, just seems fitting for him.

Balk-a-Day Bob. this is the same Bob Davidson that could not rise to the level of character and integrity of a one Jim Joyce. We all remember the class act that Jim Joyce conducted himself with when he “kicked it” [the call that denied Armando Galarraga's perfect game]. No such luck class from Davidson when he missed (was not even watching) that fair ball that would have been a walk-off single or event a double for in the Marlins vs. Phillies game that would have put the Braves up another full game.

Wonder what Balkin’ Bob will cost us tonight.

It is a shame when the umpires seem to have an ever increasing habit of injecting themselves as a part of the game, as opposed to their prescribed duties.

Wasn’t it Big Headed Blowhard, I mean, Bob Davidson that blew the call a couple weeks ago in that Phillies game with the astoundingly incorrect fair/foul call that kept them in the game, and eventually winning it?

The home run by Brian McCann yesterday only seemed to re-emphasize that this could be a very special season. But the Braves aren’t the only team that is enjoyed such unlikely good fortune; a lot of teams that weren’t even considered in most experts’ preseason discussions regarding playoff contention are either leading their divisions or are in the thick of the hunt, and I for one think that’s a great thing for the game. The Texas Rangers look pretty scary over in the American League right now, and the Reds and Padres have given their fans a heck of a ride so far.

I remember another October when two less-than-likely teams met in the Fall Classic. The year was 1991, when the Braves met the Twins in a clash of “worst to first” teams. This year could see another set of fresh new faces and new heroes on Baseball’s biggest stage. Here’s hoping the World Series MVP goes to an Atlanta Brave, obviously, but kudos to many other deserving teams who’ve worked hard and performed above everyone’s expectations in 2010. MLB needed this in the worst way.

BravesFaninMD

Here’s why I think attendance is so important and it is not rocket science: the more Braves fans that show their commitment to this team by attending games and putting $$$ into the owners’ pockets, the higher the salary level will be for the team and the better players we’ll be able to watch on the field. These games with less than 20,000 just tell ownership: “OK, so what? You’ve given us a team in 1st place but we still won’t spend the money to attend games.” It’s just that simple.

The announcers on ESPN are talking about the “loss” of Chipper Jones and Troy Glaus being bad for the Braves.

Personally, the Braves are a MUCH better team without them. I’ll take Derek Lee and Omar Infante over Chipper and Glaus ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. Chipper and Glaus are pretty much done.

Just like last year when the Braves line-up improved with Kelly Johnson and Jeff Francoeur being taken out of the lineup……..the “loss of Chipper and Glaus” not only improves the line-up…..but also DRASTICALLY improves the defense.

The thought of Chipper playing third and Glaus playing first in play-off type situations is FRIGHTENING. Even if they could hit, you’d have to replace them in the 7th or 8th inning with 2 players off the bench to protect a lead.

With Infante and Lee replacing Chipper and Glaus, the Braves can save their bench for pinch hitting appearances. Chipper and Glaus hinder the flexibility of the Braves bench.

Headley Lamar……….dude, Chipper was hitting his career average of .306 during his so called “hot streak”. When hitting your career average is considered “hot” then it’s about time to hang them up. Because when he’s not hot…….he’s batting .220 like he did for the first 2 months of the season.

Also, his power numbers pretty much SUCKED. Conrad, with 1/3 of the at-bats that Chipper has……….has almost as many homers as Chipper.

Infante is a huge upgrade over Chipper, both offensively and defensively. Derek Lee is an even bigger upgrade over Glaus.

Haha good answers. I never got my answer from them on a question I asked earlier, nor did I get an answer from them when they were trolling DOB’s blog.

They make fun of the Braves for one World Series title, yet they do not realize the Braves franchise has three in their history and have only been in Atlanta since 1966. However, the Phillies played in one city since the 19th century, but they only have two titles, one more than the Atlanta Braves who have only been in Atlanta for fourty four years.

I wasn’t home tonight, so I didn’t see the game. Most important thing is, with Sept 1 a bit over 24 hrs away, we won. Leave it to Bradley to focus on the ejection. Now you know why I call you “Mr Negative” , my friend!

Seriously, we need three of four from the Mets. Yes, the Phillies are playing the Dodgers, but we need to fatten this lead. This NL East is like a horse race heading for a photo finish, wayyyy too close for comfort.
