Our inaugural ranking of the SEC’s most obnoxious fans was presented in 2008, and much has changed over 24 months. Mississippi State has switched coaches. Auburn has switched coaches. (Then again, when doesn’t Auburn switch coaches?) Tennessee has switched coaches twice. Kentucky’s coach quit. Vanderbilt’s coach just quit. Florida’s coach quit and un-quit.
Amid such flux, it’s only fair that our rankings don’t remain static. Indeed, I’m proud — actually, I’m not sure if “proud” is the proper word — to note that our new rankings are completely different. Not one of the 12 positions has gone unchanged, which says … well, I don’t know what it says. But there we are.
A note: I asked for your input the other day, and I have taken your thoughts under the deepest advisement. Indeed, the results of our little poll are included herein. But I must stress that these are my rankings, and I’m a neutral. (Full disclosure: I’m a graduate of Kentucky, which hopes one day to start a football program.)
Oh, and I probably should mention that I attended my first SEC game in 1969, covered my first SEC game in 1976 and have seen a game at every SEC stadium. Meaning: I might be an idiot, but I’m a well-traveled idiot.
And with that, I hereby unveil the 2010 rankings of the SEC’s most obnoxious fans. In honor of our previous champion, fans of the new title-holder are required by executive order to wear jean shorts for the next two years.
12. Tennessee (No. 7 in 2008, No. 4 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Purely a sympathy vote. The formerly Big Orange has seen itself massively devalued from within. It has a lousy AD who hired the brat Lane Kiffin, and now this program is in a world of hurt. (In a display of bravery, the lousy AD just canceled a series with North Carolina) Put simply, I feel sorry for Tennessee fans. They deserve better than ham-handed Mike Hamilton.
11. Vanderbilt (No. 10 in 2008, No. 10 in 2010 AJC.com poll): It’s never a good sign when a coach quits a month before summer camp convenes, but that’s what Bobby Johnson did. He did it because he was tired of losing. Johnson is a fine football man who stands as Vandy’s best coach in the past quarter-century. He went 12-52 in league play. Imagine having to watch that every season, world without end.
10. Kentucky (No. 11 in 2008, No. 11 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Big Blue football rooters didn’t do anything obnoxious these past two seasons. Big Blue rooters save the obnoxious behavior for basketball, a sport for which they have no peers regarding exess. They’ve only moved up — or down, depending on your point of view — to No. 10 because I happened to feel really sorry for Tennessee and Vandy.
9. Mississippi State (No. 12 in 2008, No. 12 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Backers of the maroon Bulldog believe Dan Mullen can win more than his share of games. If so, it would only trigger the scariest words in the English language: More cowbell!
8. Ole Miss (No. 9 in 2008, No. 9 in 2010 AJC.com poll): I can handle Rebel fans most years, but occasionally they’ll get all geeked up and start sounding like Georgia or South Carolina folks. (“This is finally our year! This time for sure!”) For the Rebels, last season was such a time. Naturally, they went 4-4 in SEC play, including an egg-on-the-face loss to Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl. And now coach Houston Nutt, who’s nutty, has allowed quarterback Jeremiah Masoli to walk on despite having been kicked off the Oregon squad and having pleaded guilty in separate incidents. Nutt has promised “zero tolerance” regarding Masoli. Me, I anticipate more egg on the Ole Miss face.
7. South Carolina (No. 6 in 2008, No. 7 in 2010 AJC.com poll): I keep thinking the Gamecocks are going to be really good this year. I also keep wondering what will happen with their fans — who have thought the Gamecocks are going to be really good every year since ‘92 (and I mean 1892) — are finally proved right.
6. LSU (No. 8 in 2008, No. 5 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Here’s where you and I disagree the most. I’ve always considered a trip to Tiger Stadium a treat. Then again, I don’t sit in the stands, an experience I’ve been led to believe is most challenging. But I will tell you this: The best scripted moment in all of college football is when the Golden Band from Tigerland and the Golden Girls conduct their pregame march to midfield. Beats Ohio State’s “Script Ohio” six ways to Saturday.
5. Alabama (No. 4 in 2008, No. 3 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Being old enough to have seen Alabama under the Bear, I dreaded the thought of the Tide rising again to eminence. In the ’70s and ’80s, there were no worse fans. (Except maybe Kentucky basketball fans, and even then it was a coin flip.) But I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the relative moderation that has accompanied Bama’s latest national championship. Maybe this has to do with Nick Saban, who never crows and is never satisfied. Whatever the case, I offer this relatively benign ranking as a thank-you.
4. Georgia (No. 3 in 2008, No. 2 in 2010 AJC.com poll): If it’s possible to have sympathy for folks who take pride in trashing their own campus, I have some sympathy for Dawg-lovers. Because I think every Georgia road game this autumn is going to be off the hook. I think this because of Damon Evans and red panties.
3. Arkansas (No. 5 in 2008, No. 7 in 2010 AJC.com poll): It wasn’t enough that Hog fans ran off Houston Nutt and welcomed Bobby Petrino as a conquering hero, not the sinking-ship-deserting rat he was. But now apparently you have to pass a loyalty test to work for an Arkansas radio station. (Reporter Renee Gork was fired after wearing a Florida hat to a press conference; being Petrino, he noticed and objected.) And Hog fans reacted as if her dismissal was a good thing. Where’s Edward R. Murrow when you need him?
2. Florida (No. 1 in 2008, No. 1 in 2010 AJC.com poll): I know, I know. It takes effort not to put the hated Gators — and they’re hated in every SEC outpost, not just Athens, Ga. — at the top of anything involving the word “obnoxious.” But I have to confess: I never understood why everybody hated Tim Tebow. He was a really good player who seemed like a really good guy. If he played for Georgia or Alabama, would those fans have not similarly lionized him? But if you’re asking me to defend jorts … well, that line I will not cross.
1. Auburn (No. 2 in 2008, No. 6 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Because Tiger fans still worship at the tainted feet of Pat Dye. Because they run off coaches on a whim. Because they’ve grown as arrogant as Alabama backers without one-tenth the justification. Because they’re still whining over the national championship they didn’t win in 2004. Because the world’s worst fan — the Montgomery banker Bobby Lowder — is an Auburn man. And because I would pay money (though not a lot) to see Bobby Lowder in jean shorts.

Agreed. I got off topic here, my point wasn’t to fight with UGA fans, it was to unite in the fact that Tennessee is one of the most obnoxious fan bases on the planet. They could put english premier league fans to shame.

I’m a Bama fan. And I live in Florida. I see Bama fans all over the place and we generally do greet one another with a quite Roll Tide. I have had Gator fans I do the chomp in my face in a GROCERY store and yell “Bama {use your imagination} SUCKS” at my kids in parking lots.
I’ve less than 2 hours from UF for 15 years and prior to that lived about 30 minutes from Auburn for 5 years. Florida “wins” this one, for me, hands down. Auburn comes next. Bama fans may very well be obnoxious as a whole, but the ones I know are pretty subtle about it. But that could be because we’re all hiding out here in gator country.
By and large, I think EVERY school’s fans are obnoxious to a certain extent. And the closer you get to campus the worse they are.

Oh that’s right we didn’t have a decent team in the 80s period…
I don’t get Big B CH 99. He’s obviously ignorant to as of late and one of the most obnoxious of his fan base. I’m sorry UGA fans are some of the worse overall. They brag even when they are bad. That combination of ignorance and obnoxiousness is quite pathetic. UGA is one of those programs who has a great winning percentage, but no MNCs to back it up. That’s why it isn’t a top 10 program and UGA fans need to learn that fact. Even though LSU fans can be total a-holes and drop beer on you at least they know when to keep their mouths shut unlike UGA fans.

I’m a die hard Georgia fan, and absolutely HATE Florida, but I don’t understand the hate against Tim Tebow myself. He was everything that makes college football great in my eyes, and someone who isn’t all about the money and repping his hood. He was a class act whom did far more than any other athlete I’ve read about in my 26 years of life.
As far as fans go, I was scolded when I went to Knoxville a few years ago, and living in Charleston, South Carolina for a few years, South Carolina fans blow a ton of hot air. Will find out September 11th on what they’re like at Williams Bryce. Ole Miss fans have been the nicest, most accommodating people I have ever come across at a game. The Grove is well worth the accolades and the trip to Oxford.

Always running their mouths about how bad they are, never accomplishing much, then when all else fails blabber on and on about how great the SEC is.

I hate to bring facts into the equation. But, here I go anyway …
As relates to the “when doesn’t Auburn switch coaches comment” – I decided to do some research.
Since 1980, here are the number of head football coaches each of the 12 SEC member institutions have employed …
9 – Alabama
8 – LSU
7 – Kentucky, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Vanderbilt
6 – Auburn, Arkansas
5 – Florida, Mississippi State
4 – Georgia, Tennessee.
So, only 4 SEC schools have switched coaches LESS than Auburn has. Maybe you should be asking when LSU or Alabama aren’t switching coaches. Try some research – it makes everything so much more valuable for your readers.

Mark, it’s clear that you haven’t come out of your ivory press box tower in years to actually interact with fans. Seriously. Get out of the locker room, get into the tailgates. Get more into message boards. Get into the stadium. You’ll see that you’re the stupidest man alive to give Tennessee a “sympathy” vote by ranking their fans the least obnoxious in the SEC. That’s bunk… the events of the past few years haven’t dulled their ability to talk in the LEAST. You think UT won’t be obnoxious with a bad team? Hardly. And Auburn’s people are obnoxious, but the worst in the league? They’re not the worst in their STATE. And Arkansas at 3? You need to start going by some other measure beyond what you get in your email box. Arkansas would be in the bottom 3. Just because they’re going to be good this year has little bearing on how obnoxious their fans are. South Carolina proves that you don’t have to have a team to have a big mouth.

The vast majority of the “obnoxious” fans, st least so in the SEC, are those that never set foot on a collegiate campus— but these are the ones whose pickup (that’s plural if they have another vehicle) is adorned with decals, mudflaps, radio antenna decor, hood ornaments, etc., all boosting the “Great University” that they support. Not all SEC fans are like this, but this certainly applies to most Alabama fans, and to a slightly lesser degree, the LSU fans.

I can think of no person less qualified than a sports writer to make these sort of rankings. You don’t tailgate, you don’t sit in the stands, and you work at a newspaper (thus limiting or altering normal interactions with other fans). Why don’t you just title this “fans that email the most when I write an column they don’t agree with”.

Mark,
Auburn fans have every right to be proud of our team that went undefeated and had more first round draft picks then any other team in the history of the NFL draft. Many people thought we should have had the opportunity to play for the national championship. But Auburn fans do not whine about it. I have not heard any of my friends talk about this in at least a couple years. My guess is that you went to a party with this banker guy and maybe he complained about it and you thought you would take the exception and make it the rule. Any Auburn graduate will tell you that Auburn is a freindly place and in fact many people from other schools would agree with me. Mark you need to go back to school and take statistics.

WDE, your post is dead on. Mark Bradley just proved to be the biggest idiot homer writer besides Finescum in the country. Having UT at 12 as sympathy is stupid. Obviously the majority and many non AU fans on this blog feel this ranking is ridiculous. Ask random WV, Syracuse & USC (Trojans) fans about their experience visiting the Loveliest Village on the Plains and they will tell you it was by far their greatest college football experience they have ever had. This coming from all ages. I find the AU fans to be far and away more welcoming, cordial and respectable than any other school in the SEC. Bradley, have you been to a game in Corn Dog country? Or Bammerville? Jeez, their fans are light years worse than Auburns. And honestly, I have hundreds of Dawg fans as friends but I have to say they are the most obnoxious group there is….here is the revised order w/o the homer slant(bc UK, Vandy, MSU and sorry Arky just don’t count. They are irrelevant.) 1. UGA 2. LSU/Bama 4. UF 5. USC 6. UT 7. Ole Miss 8. AU 9. Arky 10. MSU 11. UK 12. Vandy…

The worst non game day experiences I have had are by far Knoxville (though thats because i had 15 years worth of non game days there) and Tallhassee even though they aren’t in the SEC. Of course all fans have their obnoxious moments. IMO, it’s the ones who can’t back up their sh*t talk with wins that are the most obnoxious. And I think everyone knows who I’m looking at here. Here are my experiences at away games:
LSU: car keyed
Tenn: 2 years ago, fans screaming “I hope Tebow gets AIDS.” Nice
Ugag: almost ran me off I-75 on the way to FL-GA a few years back. Were they jealous of my gatored-out convertible? Or just A’holes??

#3 – UT
All three have a great fan base – but wow are they over the top.

You are so hung up on this SEC title thing, so lets expand the parameters. Since the beginning of the Championship Game in 1992, that is 18 years ago, Georgia has won more than 1 SEC championship with a whopping 2 SEC titles! Is that something you are really proud of? 2 titles in 18 years. You are the bulldogs. On paper, you have had #1 recruiting classes, have seen the second coming of Herschel Walker, and Finish the Drill. And yet you consistently wimper to Chick-fil-A, Citrus, Capital One, Music City and Independence Bowls every year. That makes you 2nd Tier in the SEC.

In this difficult time for newspapers, how can the AJC justify paying this man who obviously is a poor reporter and “mails it in” each day with crap like this? He doesn’t have the time or talent to unearth decent sports stories and, as we all can see, he is not a gifted writer by anyone’s yardstick.
Once again, I ask when is the AJC going to dump Bradley and hire someone who can deliver good sports stories to the slowly diminishing AJC crowd of thoughtful readers?
Think about this: can anyone imagine in a different era if someone like Grantland Rice or Red Smith or Jim Murray or Dave Kindred (yes, that AJC alumnus) putting out junk like this?

Interesting discussion, Mark. I am a Georgia fan, and I sometimes cringe at the behavior of the collective dawg nation. When I saw a picture of the quad looking like a scene out of “Animal House” I wanted to cry. Or hurt somebody. As a group, we’re also not above…how shall I say…less than hospitable treatment of opposing fans on gameday. I wish it weren’t so, but we’ve got our share of morons among us.
That being said, no matter how sorry you feel for Vol fans, they’ve got “Rocky Top,” and that should automatically qualify them for a top five obnoxious ranking every year. (Not to mention, I can’t muster any pity for a team that’s taken us to the woodshed the past two years.)
You’re right about disagreeing on LSU. They don’t just have their fair share of idiots. They’ve got a monopoly.
I should dislike Florida fans more than I do, but they’re like cartoon characters to me. All that hair gel, all those jorts… Yeah, they’re obnoxious (especially after then annual beatdown), but they’re kind of endearingly silly, too. I just can’t hate on people for being cheesy.
On the whole, I find most opposing fans pretty likable around the tailgate, but all that good cheer turns into loathing at kickoff.
One exception there — not in the discussion, I know, but it must be said anyway — THE NERDS. I pretty much loathe them around the clock.

I will say, to Auburn’s defense, that after UGA won there in 2002 to win the SEC East (one of the proudest days of my life) the Auburn fans around me did congratulate me and my wife. However, I also can recall a fight on an Athens street when about 6 Auburn fans jumped a UGA fan and beat on him until another UGA guy came in and flattened all of them like Popeye. No kidding! Tennessee fans are the MOST obnoxious. I have been there to many UGA games and there fans were relentless in badgering me with a UGA jersey on. I was wearing a #14 Bobo jersey and they kept saying, “Bobo is a clown, Bobo is a clown” over and over. Now, I know what some of you all’s opinion of Bobo is but still…..This carried on and on until I finally turned around and said, “Your the damn clown wearing that orange”. Even the main culprit’s girlfriend laughed at that and the taunting stopped!

Being a Georgia fan, I will have to admit that a lot of fans are obnoxious, and get on even my damn nerves. Of course, they are the ones who don’t know a lick about Georgia football, and mostly students who probably can’t even show you where Sanford Stadium is, just know that Georgia wins a fair amount of games and wants something to raise cane about.
I have heard a lot about LSU fans, but never been to Death Valley, but never had a problem with them at away games or bowl games. Bammer fans always pull the National Championships as their defense, which is fine. Tennessee has got to be the worst though. Florida runs their mouth, but backs it up for the most part. And I hate to say this, but more Georgia fans get on my nerves than 90% of the other schools. Guess I would just prefer they keep their mouths shut and have a clue what they are actually talking about, and understand atleast a little history about the team they root for.
