The SEC’s most obnoxious fans: There’s a new orange No. 1

Our inaugural ranking of the SEC’s most obnoxious fans was presented in 2008, and much has changed over 24 months. Mississippi State has switched coaches. Auburn has switched coaches. (Then again, when doesn’t Auburn switch coaches?) Tennessee has switched coaches twice. Kentucky’s coach quit. Vanderbilt’s coach just quit. Florida’s coach quit and un-quit.

Amid such flux, it’s only fair that our rankings don’t remain static. Indeed, I’m proud — actually, I’m not sure if “proud” is the proper word — to note that our new rankings are completely different. Not one of the 12 positions has gone unchanged, which says … well, I don’t know what it says. But there we are.

A note: I asked for your input the other day, and I have taken your thoughts under the deepest advisement. Indeed, the results of our little poll are included herein. But I must stress that these are my rankings, and I’m a neutral. (Full disclosure: I’m a graduate of Kentucky, which hopes one day to start a football program.)

Oh, and I probably should mention that I attended my first SEC game in 1969, covered my first SEC game in 1976 and have seen a game at every SEC stadium. Meaning: I might be an idiot, but I’m a well-traveled idiot.

And with that, I hereby unveil the 2010 rankings of the SEC’s most obnoxious fans. In honor of our previous champion, fans of the new title-holder are required by executive order to wear jean shorts for the next two years.

12. Tennessee (No. 7 in 2008, No. 4 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Purely a sympathy vote. The formerly Big Orange has seen itself massively devalued from within. It has a lousy AD who hired the brat Lane Kiffin, and now this program is in a world of hurt. (In a display of bravery, the lousy AD just canceled a series with North Carolina) Put simply, I feel sorry for Tennessee fans. They deserve better than ham-handed Mike Hamilton.

11. Vanderbilt (No. 10 in 2008, No. 10 in 2010 AJC.com poll): It’s never a good sign when a coach quits a month before summer camp convenes, but that’s what Bobby Johnson did. He did it because he was tired of losing. Johnson is a fine football man who stands as Vandy’s best coach in the past quarter-century. He went 12-52 in league play. Imagine having to watch that every season, world without end.

10. Kentucky (No. 11 in 2008, No. 11 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Big Blue football rooters didn’t do anything obnoxious these past two seasons. Big Blue rooters save the obnoxious behavior for basketball, a sport for which they have no peers regarding exess. They’ve only moved up — or down, depending on your point of view — to No. 10 because I happened to feel really sorry for Tennessee and Vandy.

9. Mississippi State (No. 12 in 2008, No. 12 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Backers of the maroon Bulldog believe Dan Mullen can win more than his share of games. If so, it would  only trigger the scariest words in the English language: More cowbell!

8. Ole Miss (No. 9 in 2008, No. 9 in 2010 AJC.com poll): I can handle Rebel fans most years, but occasionally they’ll get all geeked up and  start sounding like Georgia or South Carolina folks. (“This is finally our year! This time for sure!”) For the Rebels, last season was such a time. Naturally, they went 4-4 in SEC play, including an egg-on-the-face loss to Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl. And now coach Houston Nutt, who’s nutty, has allowed quarterback Jeremiah Masoli to walk on despite having been kicked off the Oregon squad and having pleaded guilty in separate incidents. Nutt has promised “zero tolerance” regarding Masoli. Me, I anticipate more egg on the Ole Miss face.

7. South Carolina (No. 6 in 2008, No. 7 in 2010 AJC.com poll): I keep thinking the Gamecocks are going to be really good this year. I also keep wondering what will happen with their fans — who have thought the Gamecocks are going to be really good every year since ‘92 (and I mean 1892) — are finally proved right.

6. LSU (No. 8 in 2008, No. 5 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Here’s where you and I disagree the most. I’ve always considered a trip to Tiger Stadium a treat. Then again, I don’t sit in the stands, an experience I’ve been led to believe is most challenging. But I will tell you this: The best scripted moment in all of college football is when the Golden Band from Tigerland and the Golden Girls conduct their pregame march to midfield. Beats Ohio State’s “Script Ohio” six ways to Saturday.

5. Alabama (No. 4 in 2008, No. 3 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Being old enough to have seen Alabama under the Bear, I dreaded the thought of the Tide rising again to eminence. In the ’70s and ’80s, there were no worse fans. (Except maybe Kentucky basketball fans, and even then it was a coin flip.) But I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the relative moderation that has accompanied Bama’s latest national championship. Maybe this has to do with Nick Saban, who never crows and is never satisfied. Whatever the case, I offer this relatively benign ranking as a thank-you.

4. Georgia (No. 3 in 2008, No. 2 in 2010 AJC.com poll): If it’s possible to have sympathy for folks who take pride in trashing their own campus, I have some sympathy for Dawg-lovers. Because I think every Georgia road game this autumn is going to be off the hook. I think this because of Damon Evans and red panties.

3. Arkansas (No. 5 in 2008, No. 7 in 2010 AJC.com poll): It wasn’t enough that Hog fans ran off Houston Nutt and welcomed Bobby Petrino as a conquering hero, not the sinking-ship-deserting rat he was. But now apparently you have to pass a loyalty test to work for an Arkansas radio station. (Reporter Renee Gork was fired after wearing a Florida hat to a press conference; being Petrino, he noticed and objected.) And Hog fans reacted as if her dismissal was a good thing. Where’s Edward R. Murrow when you need him?

2. Florida (No. 1 in 2008, No. 1 in 2010 AJC.com poll): I know, I know. It takes effort not to put the hated Gators — and they’re hated in every SEC outpost, not just Athens, Ga. — at the top of anything involving the word “obnoxious.” But I have to confess: I never understood why everybody hated Tim Tebow. He was a really good player who seemed like a really good guy. If he played for Georgia or Alabama, would those fans have not similarly lionized him? But if you’re asking me to defend jorts … well, that line I will not cross.

1. Auburn (No. 2 in 2008, No. 6 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Because Tiger fans still worship at the tainted feet of Pat Dye. Because they run off coaches on a whim. Because they’ve grown as arrogant as Alabama backers without one-tenth the justification. Because they’re still whining over the national championship they didn’t win in 2004. Because the world’s worst fan — the Montgomery banker Bobby Lowder — is an Auburn man. And because I would pay money (though not a lot) to see Bobby Lowder in jean shorts.

Once again, I urge you to think through why the AJC would continue to employ this hack sportswriter.

Guys, I can’t believe you all get so worked up over this. It’s just shock journalism, He puts up some random list that he knows will generate some heat and gets people passing the word along. It’s how I ended up here reading this because I never read any of this junk. I think it’s shady journalism but it apparently “sells tickets”. The best thing you can do is just stop reading.

I for one agree with Mark. AU fans try to act like they arent obnoxious. Just check all the posts on here from AU fans saying this article is bull. Not a single one of them can admit that even one of their hallowed fans could possibly be annoying. They are the biggest bunch of whinny losers in the South, hands down. ‘War this, war that. We should have won that we should have this.. Check our Rivals stats after re-evals..sick, their band is loud and plays over ours’, seriously this article couldnt be more dead on. A bunch of whinny obnoxious fans for sure.

Auburn 4 coaches since 1981 and 6 since 1951. Georgia has had 5 since 51.
4 since 81. Alabama has had 10 since 51 and 8 since 81. Find another reason. If any sec school was 13-0 and didn’t win it all they would claim it anyway. Bama claims national titles when they didn’t win the conference. Conference titles when they played more games than other sec shcools but had overall record. Bama fan is by far the most obnoxios.

Are you serious? Auburn fans are the most obnoxious in the SEC? First, you say Auburn changes coaches too often. We have had two coaches since 1999. Alabama has changed coaches 3 times in that time frame. So I am not sure where you get your logic there. As for complaining about the 2004 National title thing, it is my understanding that the only time I hear an Auburn person complain or even as much as discuss the 2004 debacle is when a member of the media brings it up. Otherwise it is not discussed. So your “opinion” is that Auburn fans are obnoxious. That is your right to have one, but that doesn’t mean it is a good one.

As a current AU student, and having been to games in Athens, Baton Rouge, Tuscaloosa, Knoxville, Gainesville, Nashville, Lexington, and Oxford, I can tell you that our game day environment is one centered on family and sportsmanship. It’s unbelievable to me that you would put us as having the most obnoxious fans. Granted there might be some smack-talking between Bama and UGA, but that’s not unexpected. But there’s no way that you’d walk through AU’s campus on game day and have the women you’re with called “trashy whores” by AU fans purely because they’re wearing opposing colors (I’m looking at you, LSU). There’s nothing wrong with some competitive heckling, but at the end of the day it would be hard to find a fan that goes out of the way to be completely disrespectful. We like to believe that the majority of us have a level of class that is hard to find at some other SEC schools. Everyone is going to want their team to win and we’re no different. We might not have trophies to fill up our cases but we’re still a consistently good football program.

I read articles related to the SEC all the time, and I never comment on writers’ opinions because they’re free to think whatever way they want. But this is just garbage and the majority of those commenting agree.

You clearly have never been to Tuscaloosa. Nor have you been to Auburn. Sure Pat Dye was a good coach but no one here gives a flying f*** about him. Bammers are easily the most obnoxious fans in college football. What the difference between a maggot and a Bama fan? A maggot can only dwell on a dead bear for so long. Also switching coaches? Really? Tuberville was here for 10 years I hardly call that switching on a whim. Maybe you should actually come to the plains and find out for yourself. This article is horrible you should lose your job for this. Idiot

My first comment ever on a blog site but I had to do it. Auburn ? I am an Auburn fan and I’m biased but I truly think we have the best fans in the conference. I’ve been attending games since ‘61 and have been to all SEC venues multiple times and I’m certain we don’t have the worst fans. Not even close. Bama & LSU jockey for number one but I think LSU takes top spot. Ole Miss fans have been a little edgy the last couple of times I went over there. Georgia fans were pretty bad my last couple of visits there too and, thus, I haven’t been back since 2001. Anyway, the Auburn game day experience is second to none and the fans are a HUGE reason why. War Eagle and good luck to all of my fellow SEC fans !

what do coaching changes have to do with a school having obnoxious fans? when an athletic department decides to remain complacent with the same coach, regardless of performance, that makes the fans less obnoxious? using your logic, penn state must have the nicest and most humble fans in the country!

this is a very poorly written article. there’s nothing substantive that you point to in drawing your conclusions other than pointing out the coaching changes in the SEC, some of them inaccurately without fact-checking.

If you’re too insulated to sit in the stands or walk among the crowds at games to research the SEC’s obnoxious fans, then you really have no business writing this kind of column. Try tailgating in Columbia or Lexington when LSU or Florida fans come to down. LSU and Florida should be #1/2 every year. And no matter how much sympathy you have for UT fans, they’re still among the most obnoxious in the league.

Alabama – 8
Arkansas – 7

Ole Miss – 6

Many of you need to get over yourselves because we’re ALL incredibly obnoxious. Maybe not individually, but SEC fan bases all run their mouths. We’re a passionate bunch, but we’re also really pompous about our football. I’ve met great fans and terrible ones from every one of these schools, but in general this conference takes the cake in obnoxious behavior. Even Vanderbilt! Their fans are pretty apathetic, but they’ll never let you hear the end of it if they manage a win. Really, my only complaint about this list is the “sympathy” vote for UT. It’d be warranted if they shut their mouths once everything went to hell for the program, but that’s hardly the case.

The ONLY thing Alabama and Auburn fans have in common is they both LOVE to talk about ALABAMA football. Beyond that, the only fans who ever consistently talk about Bear Bryant are Auburn alumni and Auburn fans (who consistently have to defend their right to be fans to Auburn alumni).

Mark, I enjoyed this post. I definitely wouldn’t have given Auburn any credit in your article, however. Well, maybe I would have. It gives them something OTHER than Alabama football to talk about.

Have you even been to Auburn?

August 27th, 2010

Mark, you clearly have never stepped foot on Auburn’s campus. Even most opposing fans would disagree that we are number one. WHO WORSHIPS PAT DYE? That’s the first I’ve heard of that. And if you knew ANYTHING, you would know that Lowder isn’t really a favorite here either. and arrogant?! We just love our school. The thing that most people in the SEC don’t get is that we, at Auburn University do not confuse a love for our university with a love for our football team. So we have much more than football stats to be proud of and are not dependent on any title to have love for our school. With that said, maybe before writing an articel, a little research might be helpful.

If any school in the Nation, much less the SEC, worships a former coach it would be the tide and their unconditional love for the bear. I’ve seen bama fans with tattoos of the bear the size of their entire back. Find one AU fan that has Dye tattooed on his/her back. I’ve also seen banners in T-town that cover entire porches that read “RMFT,” which means roll mother… I’ll let you figure out the rest.

Mark,
As a lifelong Georgia Tech fan, now a current Auburn student I must say that I’m really disappointed with this list. I don’t understand why you think that we worship at the feet of Pat Dye? Not very true at all. And if that sort of logic comes into play in your countdown, then Alabama should be much higher. They make it a point to practically worship the likes of bear bryant, and for god’s sake they are erecting a statue of their current coach in front of their stadium! Also, Auburn holds onto coaches for a good period of time. We’ve only had 3 since Pat Dye. Auburn fans are proud to be known as some of the most polite fans in this conference. I just don’t see where you’re coming from. Although, I guess any fanbase looks obnoxious to you if they’re not struggling to fill out their 60,000 seat stadium like Tech is. This article is a crock

Typical kind of story for this newspaper. What make’s college football so fun? Bragging rights, huge loud stadiums. Obnoxious describes every thing you want when talking about “the swamp” or LSU at night or Neyland stadium. This is the poll I want to be at the top of. So the rest of the SEC can hate coming to our games. THATS THE POINT!

1. Gators- uncouth, loudmouth, heathens. BTW :the most fairweather fans in the SEC. Also documented witness say they throw urine on opposing fans from upperdeck. and well publicized incident spitting on Fulmers wife back in the 90’s.
2.LSU- Violent, Drunken swampdwellers who still cry about saban even though he didn’t leave LSU for bama. Maybe ya’ll should be mad @ the miami dolphins
3. UGA- Talk the most sh*t for NEVER backing it up…not violent or rude, just irritating and obnoxious
4. UK hoops fans- i know one Uk hoops fan who actually said that UK basketball was the ROMAN EMPIRE of college hoops. No kidding. not made up. ARROGANCE PERSONIFIED. PROBATION COMING SOON…
5. BAMA- Even back when they sucked in the 90’s, they still beat their chest about the BEAR. News flash: He died almost 30 years ago….its just worse all over again..but to the victor goes the spoils..all in all, not bad people though. So, to call Auburn fans the most obnoxious is irrational. Honestly, every teams fans are obnoxious, it’s just the nature of being a fan. Just in my honest opinion, I’d call Georgia fans the MOST obnoxious, with Florida fans a close second. I’d put Vandy at 12, only because I don’t know any Vandy fans.

Though it is your opinion, Mark, this is extremely biased and I think you have some sort of personal vendetta against Auburn….especially if you think we are more obnoxious than LSU fans. Thank you so much for such a truthful and dead on accurate article.

I’m a huge UGA fan living in Columbus, GA, which is approximately 25 miles from Auburn. Needless to say, this entire area is overflowing with toothless and overweight, Joe Dirt looking Awburn fans and it’s godawful.

You read a lot on the Internet of how Awburn fans proudly take pride in being a “family” and a classy one at that, yet anyone with more than half a brain who lives within a 20 mile radius of that wasteland can tell you otherwise. Awburn fans are the most annoyingly obnoxious (and hypocritical) fans of all sports you’ll ever find. They always tend to boast how bad other teams (ie Georgia) suck and how awesome their program is, even though UGA is going for five straight… even in the face of defeat, we still suck and they rock, according to Awburn’s finest. It’s almost unbearable and I hate Auburn ten times more than I hate Florida and Tennessee combined. At least fans of the hillbilly

And have any of you actually been to that piss-ant hellhole? No wonder nothing but jacked-up truck driving, drunken, pot-bellied redneck racists get a hard on over that embarrassment to the USA. The town is practically the size of my living room and the only entertainment it provides for the community is rodeos. RODEOS! In addition to that, have you ever seen a major university house its students in trailer parks? TRAILER PARKS?! Half the student population rents out trailers all up and down the luxurious road known as Wire Road. In addition, racism is a huge factor in that town. Remember this is the only modern day university who had students dress up as Klansmen… KLANSMEN! And don’t think racism no longer exists in that cesspool, it’s very common just as it is to see a confederate flag in that town and trust me… YOU SEE LOTS OF THEM! Basically what I’m trying to say is simple: if you want to see a stereotypical southern town, visit Awburn… and what’s even sadder is the fact that it’s home to a freaking COLLEGE!

And being a “rival fan” living in a predominantly Awburn (as their K-Mart employees call it) area, it’s hell, even though these guys are too braindead to realize how big of an embarrassment their college is, not just to the south, but to every major college in America alone. I don’t see how ANYONE in their right mind would take pride in supporting such a busted-up area, infested with white trash and racist rednecks. What’s even more shocking is how they hype everything to do with Awburn up to be the absolute best! Awburn fans, I think it’s time you leave the Awburn city limits and see what a real college town is like. Then again, no thanks, because UGA doesn’t need sewage smelling, loud-mouthed idiots supporting our program.

Just remember, these are the fans who fired their most successful coach since Pat Dye all because he had ONE losing season. And to show their true intelligence, after passing up an African-American with a better track record, they replace him with a guy whose record as a head coach is even more laughable than Bobby Johnson’s. And suddenly, he’s the greatest coach ever, according to the Awburn trash I have to deal with every day. And Awburn fans I hate to break it to you, but like I tell the morons I live around, I’ll tell you here: just what the heck are you going to do with Gus leaves your program? He’s the soul reason Chizik won 8 games last year. Think about it, if Chizik had hired any other OC, and with the terrible SAC and poor preparations (classic Gene Chizik), Awburn would have been lucky to win 4 games last year. But even so, Awburn fans would still argue to the death that they’re still the greatest!

Forgive my rant, but I felt led to get my point across: I hate Awburn simply because of its delusional and irrational redneck fans (and the fact that the town looks like a 1950s brickyard puked onto a cow pasture). Mr. Bradley, be thankful that you don’t have to live in this environment, because if you did, I assure you that even your current outlook on the most obnoxious fans would change… I’m talking in a sense of plummeting dramatically. Yes, it’s that bad.

And Awburn fans, you guys suck and so does your program, university, and “city” (even though it’s the exact opposite of a city). Maybe one day reality will strike and you guys will finally come to the realization that it’s truly embarrassing to be apart of the “Awburn family-cult”. Then again, you guys are literally too dumb to realize not showering is a bad thing too.
