Our inaugural ranking of the SEC’s most obnoxious fans was presented in 2008, and much has changed over 24 months. Mississippi State has switched coaches. Auburn has switched coaches. (Then again, when doesn’t Auburn switch coaches?) Tennessee has switched coaches twice. Kentucky’s coach quit. Vanderbilt’s coach just quit. Florida’s coach quit and un-quit.
Amid such flux, it’s only fair that our rankings don’t remain static. Indeed, I’m proud — actually, I’m not sure if “proud” is the proper word — to note that our new rankings are completely different. Not one of the 12 positions has gone unchanged, which says … well, I don’t know what it says. But there we are.
A note: I asked for your input the other day, and I have taken your thoughts under the deepest advisement. Indeed, the results of our little poll are included herein. But I must stress that these are my rankings, and I’m a neutral. (Full disclosure: I’m a graduate of Kentucky, which hopes one day to start a football program.)
Oh, and I probably should mention that I attended my first SEC game in 1969, covered my first SEC game in 1976 and have seen a game at every SEC stadium. Meaning: I might be an idiot, but I’m a well-traveled idiot.
And with that, I hereby unveil the 2010 rankings of the SEC’s most obnoxious fans. In honor of our previous champion, fans of the new title-holder are required by executive order to wear jean shorts for the next two years.
12. Tennessee (No. 7 in 2008, No. 4 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Purely a sympathy vote. The formerly Big Orange has seen itself massively devalued from within. It has a lousy AD who hired the brat Lane Kiffin, and now this program is in a world of hurt. (In a display of bravery, the lousy AD just canceled a series with North Carolina) Put simply, I feel sorry for Tennessee fans. They deserve better than ham-handed Mike Hamilton.
11. Vanderbilt (No. 10 in 2008, No. 10 in 2010 AJC.com poll): It’s never a good sign when a coach quits a month before summer camp convenes, but that’s what Bobby Johnson did. He did it because he was tired of losing. Johnson is a fine football man who stands as Vandy’s best coach in the past quarter-century. He went 12-52 in league play. Imagine having to watch that every season, world without end.
10. Kentucky (No. 11 in 2008, No. 11 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Big Blue football rooters didn’t do anything obnoxious these past two seasons. Big Blue rooters save the obnoxious behavior for basketball, a sport for which they have no peers regarding exess. They’ve only moved up — or down, depending on your point of view — to No. 10 because I happened to feel really sorry for Tennessee and Vandy.
9. Mississippi State (No. 12 in 2008, No. 12 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Backers of the maroon Bulldog believe Dan Mullen can win more than his share of games. If so, it would only trigger the scariest words in the English language: More cowbell!
8. Ole Miss (No. 9 in 2008, No. 9 in 2010 AJC.com poll): I can handle Rebel fans most years, but occasionally they’ll get all geeked up and start sounding like Georgia or South Carolina folks. (“This is finally our year! This time for sure!”) For the Rebels, last season was such a time. Naturally, they went 4-4 in SEC play, including an egg-on-the-face loss to Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl. And now coach Houston Nutt, who’s nutty, has allowed quarterback Jeremiah Masoli to walk on despite having been kicked off the Oregon squad and having pleaded guilty in separate incidents. Nutt has promised “zero tolerance” regarding Masoli. Me, I anticipate more egg on the Ole Miss face.
7. South Carolina (No. 6 in 2008, No. 7 in 2010 AJC.com poll): I keep thinking the Gamecocks are going to be really good this year. I also keep wondering what will happen with their fans — who have thought the Gamecocks are going to be really good every year since ‘92 (and I mean 1892) — are finally proved right.
6. LSU (No. 8 in 2008, No. 5 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Here’s where you and I disagree the most. I’ve always considered a trip to Tiger Stadium a treat. Then again, I don’t sit in the stands, an experience I’ve been led to believe is most challenging. But I will tell you this: The best scripted moment in all of college football is when the Golden Band from Tigerland and the Golden Girls conduct their pregame march to midfield. Beats Ohio State’s “Script Ohio” six ways to Saturday.
5. Alabama (No. 4 in 2008, No. 3 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Being old enough to have seen Alabama under the Bear, I dreaded the thought of the Tide rising again to eminence. In the ’70s and ’80s, there were no worse fans. (Except maybe Kentucky basketball fans, and even then it was a coin flip.) But I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the relative moderation that has accompanied Bama’s latest national championship. Maybe this has to do with Nick Saban, who never crows and is never satisfied. Whatever the case, I offer this relatively benign ranking as a thank-you.
4. Georgia (No. 3 in 2008, No. 2 in 2010 AJC.com poll): If it’s possible to have sympathy for folks who take pride in trashing their own campus, I have some sympathy for Dawg-lovers. Because I think every Georgia road game this autumn is going to be off the hook. I think this because of Damon Evans and red panties.
3. Arkansas (No. 5 in 2008, No. 7 in 2010 AJC.com poll): It wasn’t enough that Hog fans ran off Houston Nutt and welcomed Bobby Petrino as a conquering hero, not the sinking-ship-deserting rat he was. But now apparently you have to pass a loyalty test to work for an Arkansas radio station. (Reporter Renee Gork was fired after wearing a Florida hat to a press conference; being Petrino, he noticed and objected.) And Hog fans reacted as if her dismissal was a good thing. Where’s Edward R. Murrow when you need him?
2. Florida (No. 1 in 2008, No. 1 in 2010 AJC.com poll): I know, I know. It takes effort not to put the hated Gators — and they’re hated in every SEC outpost, not just Athens, Ga. — at the top of anything involving the word “obnoxious.” But I have to confess: I never understood why everybody hated Tim Tebow. He was a really good player who seemed like a really good guy. If he played for Georgia or Alabama, would those fans have not similarly lionized him? But if you’re asking me to defend jorts … well, that line I will not cross.
1. Auburn (No. 2 in 2008, No. 6 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Because Tiger fans still worship at the tainted feet of Pat Dye. Because they run off coaches on a whim. Because they’ve grown as arrogant as Alabama backers without one-tenth the justification. Because they’re still whining over the national championship they didn’t win in 2004. Because the world’s worst fan — the Montgomery banker Bobby Lowder — is an Auburn man. And because I would pay money (though not a lot) to see Bobby Lowder in jean shorts.

Even you comment is a lie. Petrino never coached a dwon at Auburn. Guess you should expect this from any POS that works for the AJC. By the way LSU and Bama have the worst fans. Georgia is honorable mentiion.

Well, this was provocative, Mark. I agree with AU at top, but you tipped your hat re: lack of seriousness both by putting UT last and with your explanation. As for UGA, I’ve bled R&B blood for 50 years, but the fact is that our fan behavior has deteriorated significantly since the 80’s. I was disheartened when we were outshouted by AU fans at our own stadium during the Goff years, sickened when our fans stormed and trashed our own field in 2000, and find what was done on North Campus last year inexcusable. Let’s clean up our own act, too, fellow Dawgfans.

Julia Wallace: If one of the goals of this blog was to unearth writers to replace Bradley, check out Jim at 4:08 and his description of the Auburn scene.
It is hard to believe that these blog followers were duped into arguing about obnoxious fans by a sportswriter who rarely, if ever, experiences the stadium scene because he is up in a press box. He calls such activity “covering” a game but we all know that he doesn’t have the time or talent to talk to players, coaches, officials or fans to really find out what is going on.
Add to that an absymal writing style and you can see, Ms. Wallace, why having someone like Bradley in your sports section does nothing to add circulation. Keeping Bradley is just pounding another nail in the eventual AJC coffin.
One of Bradley’s comments, apparently an effort at humor, talked about finding another lawyer to negotiate his severance. Please take him up on that possibility.

You’re a hack jack-ass Mark. Do you get paid for such crap columns? You’re just another reason the AJC has shrunk to such a meaningless regional fish wrapper. Too bad you can’t come up with a viable topic, do some due diligence, interview people with insight and enlighten the masses. But I guess that would all be too difficult for someone of your limited ability. The unfortunate part of this story is that every school has good fans, respectful fans and the lunatic fringe that give us all a bad name. But to you one school has a lock more than others. Sad really that someone who earns his living in the sports business has such a lack of understanding about sports in general. And I would like to know why you hold fans responsible for coaching changes? Louder and the presidents move to oust Tuberville was a infamous mistake that cost the president his job. No one called fans and grads to get a vote on firing Tuberville. It was obvious to all he had to go after 2008. And Chizik’s first year with Tuberville players proved he had totally lost control. I just wish you had more in you to write something more meaningful instead of fanning flames that are so easy to fan. And a regurgitated article at that. Will we see this every late August as you take a late summer day off to give us this instead of writing something you must have committed to memory by now. If I were your editor I would have you paying me to print this.

“Auburn: Dumped Terry Bowden in the middle of the 1998 season, less than a year after his Tigers won the SEC West.
Auburn: Sought to dump Tommy Tuberville in 2003, three years after his Tigers won the SEC West, and even approached Bobby Petrino, then Louisville’s coach, to fill a job not yet vacant.
Auburn: Ran off Tuberville in 2008, four years after his Tigers went 13-0.
That’s what I’m talking about, fact researcher.”
How does this mean the fans are obnoxious?

If you don’t have that app for your iPhone, you need to get it — not today, but yesterday. My neighbors (two households) are Auburn grads.. I can’t tell you how obnoxus. To hear it from them, your nothing if you don’t go to Auburn. It appears that for some reason they have a chip on their shoulder. Auburn, as it turns out, takes a lot of border line kids from metro Atlanta, kids who can’t get into UGA. I know numerous kids (friends of my kids) who wanted to go to UGA but didn’t qualify. These same kids got into Auburn, no problem. Don’t get me wrong, there are lots of Auburn students that are exceptional. but as a whole Auburn lowers the bar when it comes to enrollment.
Is this why most auburn grads are obnoxous?

Hmmmmm, sounds like your full of it to me!! And therefore, no one should believe ANYTHING else you say either. Who do you plagiarize your work from? This is simple really. If you are a fan living in enemy territory, you’re going to grow mighty tired of all the local fans. This explains the large # of votes for UGA on this blog assuming that the vast majority live in the metro Atlanta area. I’m willing to wager that most folks living around Nashville would vote UT fans as the most obnoxious… and they may be right

Bradley, say I concede your coaching point (which I do not, especially in comparison to other schools like Alabama and if you did a little research you would realize that Bowden and Tubbs had let the program slip in recruiting), but let’s just move on. How does the BOARD OF TRUSTEES or WHOEVER removing coaches mean that a set of FANS are obnoxious? Others have asked this question and you have not answered. How does having Bobby Lowder, who my Auburn friends hate, make Auburn FANS obnoxious? I’m just saying seems more like a “reasons why I hate Auburn article, than a reasons why the fans are obnoxious. The 2004 thing is vallid I suppose, but if you seriously think no other SEC school would complain about going undefeated and being left out, you are sorely mistaken.

Mark…………try this list for size. Keep in mind I am a Dawg Fan
1) Florida Gator Fans…….obnoxious because most are Bandwagon Fans. Before The Gators had their run…..you never heard of their fans. And we are talking Arrogant Preppies to boot
lol
2) Arkansas Fans……just plain ignorant and worship PigMan and Jerry Jones (Cowboys Owner) enough said lol
3) Alabama Fans……still think Bear Bryant is a God, and worship Saban…..maybe they need to wake up and understand how many NCAA Rules have been broken at that institution. Go over to Birmingham and see plenty of Obnoxious folks.
4) Georgia Fans……..yes we have passionate fans, but we also have a big Redneck element that gets out of hand at times lol
5) Tenn Fans…………see comments about Georgia Fans lol
6) Auburn Fans……..opposite of Georgia and Tenn…..a few too many Yuppie Boosters who think Auburn is Elite to Alabama Fans.
7) LSU Fans……..Night football and drunk Cajuns are not a good mix lol
9) Old Miss Fans…………..can be rowdy but not much of a factor lol
10) Kentucky Fans…………They are all waiting for Basketball Season lol
11) Miss State Fans…………….Have not had passion as fans since Jackie Sherrill lol
12:) Vandy Fans……..Gotta love fans that have such a High IQ, but how can you be obnoxious over Vandy Football lol

I am an AU fan and think this article is grossly unfair.
It is clear that you have major issues with how the AU administration has handled its dealings with its head coaches over the years, and I can respect your opinion on that. Were your column instead a ranking of “SEC schools with the Crapiest Athletic Administrations”, I may or may not agree with your ranking, but at least I could respect that as a lucid point of view.
I have attended most (not all) home games since 1972. I can tell you that the AU fans take pride in being good hosts to our guests (as we normally don’t hose down our opponents). We also know there are several places in the SEC that are a lot less hospitable.

I read 1/2 the comments but had to scroll down and enter one— UGA/FLA and BAMA fans have to be the most obnoxious–Im a Dawg from ‘84– and root for UGA but , hell, Id be obnoxious to if Id won 2 NC and dominated the SEC for 10-15 years like the gators. Bama has won , what , 21 SEC championships? put that in your pipe and scream about it. Im a Dawg and always will be but until we win a few SEC crowns theres nothing to crow about. PS I was at Neyland back in the 80’s when Bama was ranked #1 and Tn beat them like 42-37 or something–I had Bama gear on–because nothing sux like a big orange– and I thought we were going to be killed–people trashing cars with bama plates and cussing / throwing crap at Bama fans–Tn fans SUCK!!

Please reference Bradley’s article some years back where he described Eric Ramsey’s story as, principally, a “love story.” I’m not sure why MB has had a weed up his a$$ for AU for so long but it is undeniable. All that said, Bradley is almost always wrong about everything related to sports prognostication…check the book..so AU fans should probably be heartened by this. I will give him this–as will anyone who knows the score–Lowder will have to pray just to get into Hell.

The message boards have made this poor excuse for journalism popular. Mark Bradley is the well known jester of Atlanta publications. His comments and opinions are the topic of many jokes as to what makes poor journalism. I live in Alabama for 20 years, have lived in Georgia for the past 20 and while I hate to say it, Auburn is about as good as it gets when it comes to decent fans. I love to beat them, hate them with a passion but their fans are no where close to obnoxious. This article has accomplished its purpose, the editors think Mark is a draw and his cheap parlor tricks are poor form in the least.

Agree with Benjamin Ugag are the worst of the worst. They trash their campus, tear up their own hedges, cuss out their players during a game, generally treat all opposing / visiting fans poorly and are always looking for a fight. Many of these are sidewalk fans, but the alumni just stand there and watch. Alabama where families shoot each other about football, LSU, UT and then UF.
Two things the SEC dominates in – football and obnoxious fans.

My rankings and thoughts from most obnoxious to least obnoxious:
1. Florida-jorts, mullets, and arrogance (enough said)
2. Tennessee-always seem to have a chip on the their shoulder about something.
3. Alabama-imagine going to a college football game and a NASCAR race breaks out, playing Lynard Skynard over the P.A. does not improve one’s image.
4. South Carolina-always looking for the excuse.
5. Kentucky-their basketball fans are so obnoxious it rubs off on the football fans.
6. LSU-they either are calling you Tiger Bait or inviting you over for some of whatever it is they are cooking
7. Auburn-once had to fight my way out of Jordan-Hare but generally nice folks
8. Georgia-long time Dawg fan but must admit we have our moments.
9. Mississippi St.-cow bells raise them to this level
10. Arkansas-folks have always been friendly in Fayetteville, plus they lose graciously in the SEC Championship game
11. Vandy-if they would ever win they might act like they care.
12. Ole Miss-they care more about the Grove and playing Dixie than winning ball games.

AU had bad timing in 2004. The two teams that started out Pre-season Number 1 and Number 2 never lost the entire year so you did not make the title game, yet LSU made in in 2007 with 2 losses including a loss in their last regular season game of the year. They had good luck you had bad luck and also had lost to USC the two previous years so that hurt as well. If you are ever unbeaten again chances are you will make it to the title game. AU has also fired offensive or defensive coordinators about every year for the past 7 or 8 years maybe they missed one year not firing either so he may have been talking about Assistant Coaches and not just Head Coaches

UA fans are certainly confident – and, yes, we know The Bear is dead – but AU fans are just deluded. LSU fans almost deserve more pity than TN. Arky fans are cute and fluffy at best. USCe fans are the best in the business: always supportive and willing to plaster a smile on their face no matter what. UGA fans, on the other hand, have to be the most overrated fanbase since they seem to expect a nat’l champion every year and fall flat with their best effort. UF fans are just unbearable since the arrival of urban cryer; wait’ll they fall to earth this year. RTR!!!

Mark Bradley…I don’t even know how to respond to this list! The reality from a Georgia grad’s perspective is that every single SEC team has obnoxious fans, and most of them are people that didn’t actually receive a degree from the school that they cheer for. Nice jab at Georgia fans, by the way, because “true fans” wouldn’t trash their campus, right? Try a little harder next time when finding a good reason for a ranking, douche.
