The SEC’s most obnoxious fans: There’s a new orange No. 1

Our inaugural ranking of the SEC’s most obnoxious fans was presented in 2008, and much has changed over 24 months. Mississippi State has switched coaches. Auburn has switched coaches. (Then again, when doesn’t Auburn switch coaches?) Tennessee has switched coaches twice. Kentucky’s coach quit. Vanderbilt’s coach just quit. Florida’s coach quit and un-quit.

Amid such flux, it’s only fair that our rankings don’t remain static. Indeed, I’m proud — actually, I’m not sure if “proud” is the proper word — to note that our new rankings are completely different. Not one of the 12 positions has gone unchanged, which says … well, I don’t know what it says. But there we are.

A note: I asked for your input the other day, and I have taken your thoughts under the deepest advisement. Indeed, the results of our little poll are included herein. But I must stress that these are my rankings, and I’m a neutral. (Full disclosure: I’m a graduate of Kentucky, which hopes one day to start a football program.)

Oh, and I probably should mention that I attended my first SEC game in 1969, covered my first SEC game in 1976 and have seen a game at every SEC stadium. Meaning: I might be an idiot, but I’m a well-traveled idiot.

And with that, I hereby unveil the 2010 rankings of the SEC’s most obnoxious fans. In honor of our previous champion, fans of the new title-holder are required by executive order to wear jean shorts for the next two years.

12. Tennessee (No. 7 in 2008, No. 4 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Purely a sympathy vote. The formerly Big Orange has seen itself massively devalued from within. It has a lousy AD who hired the brat Lane Kiffin, and now this program is in a world of hurt. (In a display of bravery, the lousy AD just canceled a series with North Carolina) Put simply, I feel sorry for Tennessee fans. They deserve better than ham-handed Mike Hamilton.

11. Vanderbilt (No. 10 in 2008, No. 10 in 2010 AJC.com poll): It’s never a good sign when a coach quits a month before summer camp convenes, but that’s what Bobby Johnson did. He did it because he was tired of losing. Johnson is a fine football man who stands as Vandy’s best coach in the past quarter-century. He went 12-52 in league play. Imagine having to watch that every season, world without end.

10. Kentucky (No. 11 in 2008, No. 11 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Big Blue football rooters didn’t do anything obnoxious these past two seasons. Big Blue rooters save the obnoxious behavior for basketball, a sport for which they have no peers regarding exess. They’ve only moved up — or down, depending on your point of view — to No. 10 because I happened to feel really sorry for Tennessee and Vandy.

9. Mississippi State (No. 12 in 2008, No. 12 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Backers of the maroon Bulldog believe Dan Mullen can win more than his share of games. If so, it would  only trigger the scariest words in the English language: More cowbell!

8. Ole Miss (No. 9 in 2008, No. 9 in 2010 AJC.com poll): I can handle Rebel fans most years, but occasionally they’ll get all geeked up and  start sounding like Georgia or South Carolina folks. (“This is finally our year! This time for sure!”) For the Rebels, last season was such a time. Naturally, they went 4-4 in SEC play, including an egg-on-the-face loss to Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl. And now coach Houston Nutt, who’s nutty, has allowed quarterback Jeremiah Masoli to walk on despite having been kicked off the Oregon squad and having pleaded guilty in separate incidents. Nutt has promised “zero tolerance” regarding Masoli. Me, I anticipate more egg on the Ole Miss face.

7. South Carolina (No. 6 in 2008, No. 7 in 2010 AJC.com poll): I keep thinking the Gamecocks are going to be really good this year. I also keep wondering what will happen with their fans — who have thought the Gamecocks are going to be really good every year since ‘92 (and I mean 1892) — are finally proved right.

6. LSU (No. 8 in 2008, No. 5 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Here’s where you and I disagree the most. I’ve always considered a trip to Tiger Stadium a treat. Then again, I don’t sit in the stands, an experience I’ve been led to believe is most challenging. But I will tell you this: The best scripted moment in all of college football is when the Golden Band from Tigerland and the Golden Girls conduct their pregame march to midfield. Beats Ohio State’s “Script Ohio” six ways to Saturday.

5. Alabama (No. 4 in 2008, No. 3 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Being old enough to have seen Alabama under the Bear, I dreaded the thought of the Tide rising again to eminence. In the ’70s and ’80s, there were no worse fans. (Except maybe Kentucky basketball fans, and even then it was a coin flip.) But I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the relative moderation that has accompanied Bama’s latest national championship. Maybe this has to do with Nick Saban, who never crows and is never satisfied. Whatever the case, I offer this relatively benign ranking as a thank-you.

4. Georgia (No. 3 in 2008, No. 2 in 2010 AJC.com poll): If it’s possible to have sympathy for folks who take pride in trashing their own campus, I have some sympathy for Dawg-lovers. Because I think every Georgia road game this autumn is going to be off the hook. I think this because of Damon Evans and red panties.

3. Arkansas (No. 5 in 2008, No. 7 in 2010 AJC.com poll): It wasn’t enough that Hog fans ran off Houston Nutt and welcomed Bobby Petrino as a conquering hero, not the sinking-ship-deserting rat he was. But now apparently you have to pass a loyalty test to work for an Arkansas radio station. (Reporter Renee Gork was fired after wearing a Florida hat to a press conference; being Petrino, he noticed and objected.) And Hog fans reacted as if her dismissal was a good thing. Where’s Edward R. Murrow when you need him?

2. Florida (No. 1 in 2008, No. 1 in 2010 AJC.com poll): I know, I know. It takes effort not to put the hated Gators — and they’re hated in every SEC outpost, not just Athens, Ga. — at the top of anything involving the word “obnoxious.” But I have to confess: I never understood why everybody hated Tim Tebow. He was a really good player who seemed like a really good guy. If he played for Georgia or Alabama, would those fans have not similarly lionized him? But if you’re asking me to defend jorts … well, that line I will not cross.

1. Auburn (No. 2 in 2008, No. 6 in 2010 AJC.com poll): Because Tiger fans still worship at the tainted feet of Pat Dye. Because they run off coaches on a whim. Because they’ve grown as arrogant as Alabama backers without one-tenth the justification. Because they’re still whining over the national championship they didn’t win in 2004. Because the world’s worst fan — the Montgomery banker Bobby Lowder — is an Auburn man. And because I would pay money (though not a lot) to see Bobby Lowder in jean shorts.

Mark,

How many times have you been to Knoxville? I have been spit on, had batteries thrown at us and there were numerous fights started with the UGA fans in 2007. I know UGA has obnoxious fans, but to state that UT is number 12 is a joke. UT flys orange everywhere when they are winning. Every truck in TN has an orange T on the front. I’ve been to Lexington twice and they should be number 12 without a doubt in football. Basketball is another story with them.

How cheap to use one man (Lowder is an example of how power works in the state of Alabama) to condemn millions of fans. Current Tiger is right: nobody worships Pat Dye, and even when he WAS our winning sitting head coach, he wasn’t all that popular. Trust. Florida fans are all about hero worship, and Tennessee fans show how quickly they can really turn on someone. You don’t know *bleep* about Auburn! (And by the way, the BCS can still suck it.)

Mark you wre being nice because you are in Georgia. Every Team will pick their in-state rival, but All the teams put UGA & Florida at the top of their list too. UF and UGA are co-#1s. Uga like USC east really doesn’t have much to brag about, but the Dawgs think they are Elite when they are not.

Way off base stuff here Bradley with Auburn. Fact: Alabama has made far more coaching changes. Fact: Alabama had a booster who actually got the school in NCAA trouble (far worse offense than coach issues), Fact: When Auburn comes in at 5 in the fan poll you obviously show some sort of bias against them by putting them number 1. What are you like Brando or something and have an ax to grind because Tubbs was fired? Ignorant article that seems more like some random dude’s blog than what I thought was an esteemed columnist’s piece. You’re better than this.

Common sense says that whoever gets the most home night games on their schedule will have the roudiest fans.

That is why UGA fans tore up their own campus. There is simply not enough green space to tailgate from 9 AM until 8 PM kick off. Not to mention there are no trash cans.

The reason LSU fans are so wild is b/c they are known to have more night games. More night games = more drunks.

Its as simple as that folks.

I think we should not be asked to rank our own schools, so here is the honest truth from someone who has been to every stadium in the SEC at least once (sans the Swamp because of Jax)

1. LSU – will take the offensive at you just about any time before the game, but you know what you are dealing with by going there. The are a spirited bunch which I actually find entertaining. Noise level from them is off the chart. Only difference is if you whip their ass, they will party with you afterward.
2. Florida – the young fans are horribly obnoxious. Adults tend to be less so. A bizarre fan base, since few are native southerners but most are decedents of NY transplants.
3. Auburn – watch out for the frat boys at night as well as sidewalk alumni. The older fans have class.
4. Tennessee – For 100,000 of them its really not that bad, just a few jerks here and there.
5. Alabama – a bit overrated for the noise factor. Their fans are mostly pretty classy.

Ark, MSU, Ole Miss, Vandy and Kentucky do nothing worth being mentioned here.

I have seen obnoxious fans from all of the big 3.

Alabama, UF, UGA

Yeah I am talking about those with the mullet hair styles wearing jean shorts. I think thats what aggravates me with so many of the schools is the band wagon fans that have obviously never attended a university course but acts as if the world will end of their team loses. If anything needs to be addressed its how many Bama flags and stickers started popping up around the ATL area after Saban turned their program around. What a bunch (fill in the blank).

Mark,
To give yourself a little “street cred”, why don’t you spend a game day this season at a significant SEC home game of your top obnoxious ranked Auburn and bottom obnoxious ranked Tennessee teams this season?

For 2010, you could go to Knoxville and impersonate a Florida fan. At Auburn, you could choose to go as an LSU Tiger or a Georgia Bulldog.

How do you think your experiences will compare?

You fans seem to have a short memory of how obnoxious Auburn fans can be when things are going their way. My father has been cursed out by an old man one game and spit on in another at jordan hare. In 2004 I was treated like garbage when I tailgated at auburn for the georgia auburn game. I remember hearing everywhere that day just personal attacks on david green and david pollack on how they were gay together. Auburn fans are just sore losers plain and simple.

Stallings, Dubose, Franchione, Price, Shula, Saban.

Wow, that hurt typing out ALL those names! Now who fires coaches on a whim??? HMMM.

Please at least make valid points if you are going to rank fans of an SEC school on something like obnoxiousness. Seems like throwing beer bottles, egging cars, ringing cow bells and playing Rocky Top a million times in one game deserves a higher ranking than something like changing coaches. And if that is the criteria I would have to say that Bama should rank #1.

This list is ridiculous, we all know that. I am a UT grad and know that they are rude many times…the articles topic is most obnoxious fans…so is it all based on how the football team is doing currently compared to their past or is it the tradition of obnoxious fans?….If it is how their football team is currently doing then you would have to bring in many other cultural factors and it is really a study of winning vs losing and fans reactions……if it was what the title stated it would obviously be Alabama….then I don’t know mix up Arkansas, UT, Florida, Georgia…..second tier Auburn, Kentucky,…and so on.

Official rankings of most obnoxious SEC schools…

1. Alabama. Bama fans weren’t so bad a couple of years ago, but now that they’re back on the top of the mountain their fans are letting out nearly two decades of pent-up frustration. Bama fans talk about the Tide’s 13 mythical national championships as if they won them themselves.

2. The Crocodiles of the University of the Peninsular State just Below the State of Georgia. Easily the most entitled, self-indulgent fanbase in the country. Not only do they expect to win every game, they expect to win every game by 40+ points. I heard some of their fans calling for wholesale changes to the coaching staff (save for Urban Meyer) when they were undefeated last year. Unbelievable.

3. LSU. They’ve been forced to learn a little bit of humility over the last couple of years, but when they were dominating the SEC earlier in the decade you’d have been hard-pressed to find a more insufferable fanbase.

4. Georgia. This pains me to say as a UGA fan, but some of our own are among the worst in the country. The loud, boorish minority that calls for Mark Richt’s head after every less-than-stellar performance makes us all look bad. Thankfully, they are a minority.

5. Arkansas. Vastly underrated by most people on the obnoxious scale. For a program that has never been a serious factor in the SEC, they sure talk a disproportionate amount of smack. Between that and their pining for the good ol’ days for when they were in the SWC, this is a pretty annoying group of fans.

6. Tennessee. They’ve dropped a long way on this list since just last year. A fanbase often takes on the personality of their coach, and Derek Dooley is much more respectable than Lane Kiffin. Still, the way they defended Kiffin’s shady antics in the not-so-distant-past warrant them a spot in the top half of the list.

7. South Carolina. On the one hand, you have to respect a fanbase that remains passionate year-after-year despite seeing almost nothing other than disappointment. On the other, it gets tiring to listen to how this is finally going to be their year, every single year.

8. Auburn. A very friendly and respectful fanbase, generally speaking. Of course, they have their share of knucklehead fans, but seemingly a lot fewer than the other historical powers in the conference.

9-12. Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, in any order. I haven’t had enough experiences with these fanbases to be able to give a fair assessment of any of them.

UGA is in a class by themselves. In 1983 Ga. was maybe the greatest overacheiving team in history.Herschel left a year early and the dawgs were undefeated in the SEC again going into the Auburn game.Auburn was probably the best team in the country and Pat Dye had Bo Jackson and the wishbone
on a roll.Ga. played a great game and lost by one tochdown to a very superior team.It was the first SEC loss since 1979 an their so called fans booed them.OBNOXIOUS!

In my day on the Plains, it was always Bama and Tennessee, neck and neck. But, today, it’s got to be Florida followed closely by LSU, and Bama. Auburn in the post-Shug Jordan era has not “run off” as many coaches as Bama has in the post-Bear Bryant era, for the record. And the Tigers have had lots more success in the post-Bear era, too! (GA fans can be pretty tiresome, too, but I’ve lived here for 35 years, and my daughter is a UGA alumna; so, I can’t badmouth the ‘dawgs!

These are the most RIDICULOUS rankings that I’ve ever seen. Do you (Mark) even know the definition of OBNOXIOUS? Or even the word FAN? What do bad coaching hires and pregame shows have to do with obnoxious fans? I want to ad that I am an Auburn grad and fan, but I am a fan of football PERIOD and I have been to every stadium in the SEC. Here are 12 reasons why I think you should rethink your choices:
12) Tennessee – Sympathy vote? Every school makes a dumb hiring choice at some point. Either their fans are obnoxious or they aren’t. No sympathy votes.
11) Vanderbilt – Didn’t even mention the fans. I’m pretty sure they have some.
10) Kentucky – You started off with some good points, then went downhill with the “feeling sorry for the fans” routine.
9) Mississippi State – The cowbells are annoying, but their fans aren’t that bad.
8) Ole Miss – Optimism for a promising team doesn’t equal being obnoxious.
7) South Carolina – You should give them props for packing that stadium through all these lean years. But just like the above teams, you gave no justification for your ranking.
6) LSU – Who cares about a pregame march? Their fans are notorious for being obnoxious. Should have been in the top 3.
5) Alabama – I almost agree on this one. They’re not as bad as they used to be, mainly because they’ve been humbled with a decade of multiple coaching fires/hires, along with probation. But they’re still pretty arrogant. I would’ve bumped em up to #4.
4) Georgia – Dawgs fans are not nice at all. They talk trash to visitors win or lose. You haven’t experienced football in the South until you’ve been barked at outside of Samford Stadium. Top 3.
3) Arkansas – Good points here, but they still aren’t Top 5 material.
2) Florida – Definitely #1. Not even close. Tim Tebow University was already bad enough BEFORE he got there. Rattling keys in the face of losing fans is downright disrespectful.
1) Auburn – Ok, where do I begin? Multiple coaching changes? They switched coaches ONCE in the past 11 years. During that same span, Alabama had 5 different coaches. Only Tennessee’s Fulmer lasted longer during that span. And forgive them for honoring Pat Dye, who won 4 SEC titles in a 7 year span and had them in the top 5 every year for 8 straight years. What other Auburn coach even comes close to that? And its ok to whine about a lost championship when you haven’t won one since 1957! And FYI, Auburn fans HATE Bobby Lowder! Auburn fans might be considered arrogant in other parts of the country, but in the football crazy South, they’re quite moderate.

I love reading the comments. It really proves the point. Auburn’s never won anything yet they act like they have. They also call other team’s fans names while they are the biggest rednecks in all of the SEC. It is a god awful place to see a game. I went to an ole miss game there a few years ago(I’m a Dawg) and have never been treated so poorly in my life. I wasn’t even pulling for ole miss!

Bottom line is they have a huge chip on their shoulder (maybe from living in big brothers shadow…)

Brilliant column — obviously a great way to stir people up. Its hard to generalize about 100,000 fans from isolated incidents (generally with liquored up fans) so the argument will go on forever. One observation in support of your ranking: Tuberville was utterly brilliant at managing the AU fan base while he was there and it was not a happenstance that he was holding his fingers up after every win over Alabama — he was playing to the AU fans to the hilt and giving them exactly what they wanted. How many other schools or coaches could you see doing something like that when playing a rival in the SEC? Just asking.

Auburn has had SEVEN head coaches since 1951!!! That is SEVEN head coaches in FIFTY-NINE years!! One of those was Bill Oliver who was an interim coach for about 3 games. So, that is SIX in 59 years. That’s an average of 9.8 years per coach. Gimme a break man, all i had to do was Wiki auburn and it took me 3 seconds to find that out. Auburn: Dumped Terry Bowden in the middle of the 1998 season, less than a year after his Tigers won the SEC West.
Auburn: Sought to dump Tommy Tuberville in 2003, three years after his Tigers won the SEC West, and even approached Bobby Petrino, then Louisville’s coach, to fill a job not yet vacant.
Auburn: Ran off Tuberville in 2008, four years after his Tigers went 13-0.
