Dunta Robinson’s aim: ‘I want to be an unstoppable force’

Flowery Branch – Some Falcons fans have seized on the loss to New England as cause for August angst. More specifically, they’re wondering where this great new defense went.

But here’s the thing: Dunta Robinson didn’t play against New England. Dunta Robinson hasn’t yet played as a Falcon. That will change.

He’s planning to work Friday, when the Falcons visit Miami, but he’s not  certain he will. Because the Falcons would rather lose to the Dolphins 222-0 than have Robinson re-tweak his hamstring. Because he’s the single biggest reason this retooled defense could wind up being great.

Robinson uses the words “unstoppable force” to describe his aspirations for Falcons’ new D. He also applies them to himself: “I want to be an unstoppable force.”

Other Falcons have pointed to Robinson as the key to this D. Said Mike Peterson, the linebacker: “He’s going to take one side of the field and shut it down.”

Robinson: “I’m capable of doing that. I have done that. I have to come here and make a huge difference. I don’t mind putting that pressure on myself.”

He has spent the past few weeks trying not to put pressure on his hamstring. Blame Matt Ryan. Robinson was shadowing Roddy White on a post pattern and Ryan let fly. “I didn’t know he could throw it that far,” Robinson said. “He threw it 70 yards. He overthrew both of us.”

In the attempt to run down the ball, Robinson felt a tweak. Not a pull, not a tear, just a tweak. Seeing the man in whom they’ve invested $57.5 million over six seasons with even the hint of a hitch was enough to impel the Falcons to get cautious.

“It’s frustrating,” Robinson said. “It’s not fun sitting and watching football when you love to play football. At the same time, I know I’ll be needed for a 16-game stretch. They’re not going to need me sporadically.”

A word about DR the CB: He doesn’t refer to himself as a shutdown corner. “I’ve never seen one of those,” he said. “I’ve never seen a cornerback not give up a catch. That’s what ’shutdown’ means, isn’t it? That if they throw 100 balls, your man doesn’t catch one.”

Robinson’s preferred description: “I’m a playmaking corner, not a shutdown corner.”

Amplification: “I feel no one is supposed to be better than me, and I don’t consider that arrogance. If you don’t have that intensity and that belief and you line up against a great wide receiver, you’re not going to match their ability.”

A big-time corner has to believe in himself even when the last pass went for a touchdown, and whatever  helps drive him onward and upward … well, such goads are golden. Robinson is still irked at having not made the Pro Bowl — “I should have made it as a rookie; I don’t know what happened” — and the Athens product will forever stew over having been passed over by the hometown Bulldogs.

“Their coach, Jim Donnan, has said he had nothing to do with it,” Robinson said. “He said it was the recruiting coordinator [Rodney Garner]. I still blame Donnan. He’s the coach. He should have overruled everybody.”

Robinson still takes pride in having gone 2-2 against Georgia while he played at South Carolina, a program he holds dear. “It’s about time for [the Gamecocks]. I’ve had enough third-place votes in the SEC East. I want to finish first.”

Here he smiled. “People keep saying South Carolina needs to get over the hump,” he said, “the way they say the Falcons need to get over the hump.”

He can do nothing more than root for his Gamecocks. Regarding the Falcons, Robinson can be the man who takes them higher, and his teammates know it. “Guys come up to me and say, ‘We don’t care what you’re doing now. We only care about Sept. 12th.’ ”

That’s the date of the Falcons’ opener in Pittsburgh. Dunta Robinson plans to be there.

I definitely agree that the focus should be on getting Dunta back on the field when it really matters…not preseason. Even if he starts the season out a little slow, from the lack of getting reps during the preseason, the Falcons just need him to take care of business throughout the year and down the stretch.

Growing up in South Carolina, I always cheered for Clemson over the Gamecocks…and still do!!!! GO TIGERS and GO FALCONS!!!!!

Hopefully when the regular season starts we will find out whether he’s real good or overrated.

Until then you folks running him down are just talking out your *****. Lets see him play for us when it counts and then we can talk about his relative CB worth.

Yep I agree with cattledawg, he is overated. He calls himself a playmaker but look at his interception totals the last few years. thats a huge contract to give to a guy who has never went to a pro bowl. The most disappointing thing about TD so far is his failure two draft any decent corners. Maybe owens can show some promise this season and secure a spot. Grimes is a midget who gets dominated by bigger receivers but none of the other corners can seem to beat him out. Thats bad. I’m still not excited about this defense and the offense is terrible in the red zone. I see the falcons as a 10 win wildcard team at best.

He’s definitely not lacking in the confidence department.

From what I’ve read, the coaching staff is the reason he’s been on the sidelines so long. If Dunta has his way, he probably would have been on the field last week against the Pats. While I don’t want him to risk injury in a preseason game, I do want to see how he plays a team’s #1 WR in our defensive scheme. He’ll have a tough task against Brandon Marshall tomorrow.

I do believe Robinson and William Moore are scheduled to take the field against the Dolphins.

It is sort of sad that every story on Dunta so far has the same picture attached because that is the only time the guy has been on the field. I would love to see him against Miami on Friday night. Play him this week and don’t let him come near the field during the last preseason game. I have a feeling though he will once again be on the sidelines on Friday. Be the man Dunta…I am pulling for ya.

I understand the brass being cautious with such an investment BUT there comes a point where you have to let him play…he needs at least a series or two against a top wideout…dont want him to hit the field sept 12 rusty…hope to see him out there Friday night. the 3rd game’s always the most real preseason game…

Ridiculous to consider this guy to be THAT good a player. Let’s face it…the Texans had no inclination to re-sign him at anywhere near what the Falcons gave him.

How’d that “shutdown corner” thing work out with them?

One other thing…yet another reason Donnan failed at his stop at Georgia. He’s gonna blame it on Rodney, huh?

I don’t know where all these pulled hamstrings are coming from. I’ve been watching pro football pretty seriously since the late ’50’s, and I just don’t remember there the being prevalence of this injury until about the 1990’s. Maybe someone will know the answer. Is it due to more (excessive?) weight-training? I just don’t understand it. I’m very concerned about Robinson, as I am about anyone with this injury. They often just recur and recur. And we need him. Badly. If we don’t get a lot better on defense than we showed in the last game, we’ll be lucky to go 8-8 this season.

Mark, we had a lot of starters out for the last game so it was a bad gauge against a good team. I don’t think Robinson has to be an Nandi just solid and good in run support.

Wow………..ya’ll have talked about negativity, this is ridiculous! What do ya’ll want him to do go out & play pull & actually pull his hamstring & miss regular season games? It’s not like he’s going around just spouting off at the mouth, reports are coming to him, asking him ?’s so all the ppl saying do something 11st, what’s he suppose do do, ignore the reporters? Is he suppose to say, hold on i can’t answer any ?’s about my self, my play, or my impact on this D until i go out in a preseason game & prove myself to Falcons Nation???? Seriously ppl get it together!!!!!
Duanta’s not overrated, he’s the best cb we’ve had here since Deion, he’ll do wonders for our D, particularly our secondary, & I’ll go on record & say he’ll definitely be a pro-bowl cb within his 1st 3 years here! Write that down all you naysayers

He does need some action against Miami, but not to much. Everyone is forgetting that against the pats Jamaal Anderson, Brent Grimes and Dunta Robinson were all not in the line up. These 3 guys make up the best corner tandem, and the best run stuffing D-lineman on the team. Its just preseason.
