I once asked Tiger Woods to describe, in 25 words or less, what it was like being Tiger Woods. Being Tiger Woods, he finished 24-under.
“Sweet,” he said.
That was in October 2003. It happened after Tiger’s first round at the WGC-American Express Championship in Woodstock. There weren’t many folks there that Thursday, and essentially everybody on hand was following Tiger. (Department of weird coincidences: One of those in Tiger’s gallery was Damon Evans, who would become Georgia’s athletics director the next year.)
Tiger Woods would become engaged to Elin Nordegren the next month. They would marry in 2004 in Barbados, with the guests including Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan and Bill Gates. Tiger and Elin would have two children. Life seemed … well, sweet.
As of today, Tiger and Elin are no longer man and wife. Not nine months after he ran into a fire hydrant backing out of his driveway on the morning after Thanksgiving, the divorce has been finalized. And if you’re chuckling and saying, “Tiger’s free to chase women and not be labeled a cheetah” … ask yourself this: Do you think even Tiger Woods would today describe his life as “sweet”?
He has lost a wife. He will surely be rendered an absentee father. Once the idol of millions, he’s now a fallen star — indeed, maybe the biggest fallen star in the history of sports. He has not won a tournament this calendar year, and there were years when Tiger would claim a half-dozen trophies. (Indeed, he won that modest event in Woodstock.)
He’ll surely win again, but we will never again regard him the same way. He has gone from being unbeatable to being the butt of jokes and now, as of this Monday in August 2010, he’s legally just another failed husband.
Even if this damage was all self-inflicted, the temptation is nonetheless to feel a bit sorry for him. Because none of us will ever know how it is to Have It All. And none of us, thank goodness, will ever know how it is to throw so much away.

Which reveals our flaws more thoroughly: success or failure?
Tiger Woods has some demons, some flaws in his character, his personality. His success allowed them to flourish. I believe that not only is he humbled, but that he has also learned a great deal about himself.
On the golf course, watch out. The distraction of the divorce is over. He’ll still have time issues with trying to see his children. But he’ll soon have a clearer mind and more time to practice.
It’s too late for this year. But body willing, he could be a monster next year. Lots to prove. Do you really want to face a clear-minded Woods who has a lot to prove?

First of all Mark Bradley, get a life. The man did what many men do – He cheated on his wife. Does that justify his actions – of course not. Does that justify crusifying him – of course not. It is completely ignorant of you to say that he will be labeled an absentee father. How dare you! There are many men who are divorced, yet are still very much present in their children’s lives. And not everyone thinks that he is a fallen star – because he is NOT.

I am one that has not ever pulled for Tiger to win as I have always felt he was incredibly arrogant. Maybe it’s understandable that he is but I have witnessed his behavior at the Masters where he screamed cuss words in front of kids without any remorse. ( I was standing next to Elin at the time ) I have been saying for months that he was crazy to get married. Heck, I thought he was always working out and practicing. I didn’t know he was such a hound. Now he gets to choose…..practice or play.

Hudson will pitch a no hitter tonight, Philly will score 30 runs, and ESPN will still talk about Tiger for 29 minutes of the 30 minutes of ESPN news.
ESPN has become a bunch of jock sniffers. “The Final Score” is better to watch because they talk about all sports, not just NY, Boston, Tiger and Brett Farve.
That whole order for ESPN will change if there are steroids to talk about. Kill you mother, that’s ok, dog fighting, that’s ok. Steroids, that deserves the death penalty according to ESPN.

I firmly believe there’s a vast gulf between intelligence and good judgment.
Intelligence is a product of the rational mind. Judgment is the product of everything — emotions, biases, pride — the whole gamut of what makes us human.
And judgment, flawed or good, usually triumphs over intelligence. If you ever doubt that, look at the world around you! We humans do a lot of very stupid things because we act with our judgment and not our smarts.

Actually, I think Tiger may the icon for this entire go-go generation. We wanted all. Thought we could have all. Never considered losing. Never contemplated the impact of losing. Our lives were “sweet”. But now our jobs have been off-shored, we’re unemployed or under employed, we’re in foreclosure and the prospects of coming back like we were before are dim. Tiger will comeback and we’ll comeback but it will never be like it was before.

From what I hear, Arnold Palmer was a huge hound dog who cheated on his beloved wife Winnie just as frequently as Tiger Woods.
Palmer benefited from a very different media world. He got away with it.
I think the lesson to be learned is that we shouldn’t presume that we know something to be true, just because there’s an absence of proof to the contrary.

Tiger Woods committed the ultimate betrayal, deception and humiliation against Elin Nordegren and their children. A wife does not get over such ordeal in a short period of time. I think that Elin Nordegren is a woman with class, dignity and self respect and she would have never stay with a man like Tiger Woods, whom she may not respect and trust anymore. Tiger Woods seems to be a troubled man with serious character and emotional issues that appears to be long standing. Elin seems to know that the emotional demands of staying married to Tiger Woods would have been very high and not worth it. Elin has a big responsibility to herself and her two small children. I commend Elin for her wise decision, for being a caring and loving mother and for her great courage, dignity and class during this horrid time in her life. I wish them all the best!!!

I would venture to say OJ Simpson was the biggest fallen star in the history of sports. If you can’t decide, tell me: which fall would you rather take?

@It’s Me. Tiger’s actions seem a bit different in that he engaged in unprotected sex with multiple women whose alledged lifestyles suggest might have had multiple intimate partners. Tiger then engaged in unprotected sex, see timing of Elin’s last pregnancy, with his wife. By doing so,Tiger potentially carried a cornucopia of diseases home and placed the life of his wife and his children’s mother at risk. That is damnable behavior. However, the really wonderful thing about Tiger and his behavior is that we don’t have to worry one moment about what will happen in his life. It has been written “vengence is mine, and I WILL repay.” And, as my pop used to say, ” a man who loses his wife, loses everything.”

People will always make comments about a situation because people will always have opinions. But enough is enough. Get a Life. The same people who cast such harsh judgment on these people are the same people who are living foul as well. Just a thought, if you aren’t living on the straight and narrow 24/7, you have no right to cast judgement on anyone else. What people should do is focus on their lives and try to correct their wrongs with their wives, children, friends, etc.

Let’s face it. Money, power and fame are great aphrodisiacs. If the truth be told, there are legions of other sports stars who have succumbed to the same temptations. That doesn’t make it right, but it’s the reality of things going back ages. Tiger has multiple opportunities to do good things for the remainder of his career – things that serve others in a positive way. And he still has money, just less of it.

So in the end all of the money that he paid for damage control, “sex-addiction therapy”, etc. was a waste of time and money. She knew what she had planned and he fell right into the trap. From what I’ve heard the settlement is going to cost him at least half of a billion dollars; correct me if I’m wrong.

In an article it stated that years ago all golfers cheated on their wives, but no one told, and the girls were grateful for the extra money the men gave them. This might be the example that Tiger followed, along with his father cheating on his mother. At the time of his fathers death, he and Tigers mother were divorced, because of his cheating. Tiger should have waited until he finished with his golf career before he married. He certainly wasn’t ready for marriage and a family. He is so good looking until the women can’t resist him. To date, he had sex with 15 different women and never gave any of them a dime. He will be force to be dealt with next year, as he will come back better than ever.

That award goes the Mike Vick, hands down not even close.
Jail? MV7 yes, Tiger no.
Millions $$ in dept: MV7 yes, Tiger no.
Ruined professional career: MV7 yes, Tiger no.
Both done from their own stupidity, but let’s be clear…
What Tiger did, did not break any laws.
He was a bad husband and father doing what he did to his family.
I could root for Tiger again, but not MV7. sorry.

Whenever you(indefinite you) exalt someone above all others you are in essence setting them up to fall hard. When they start believing what the quote “worshipers”(particularly the press in Tiger’s case) are saying, they, are two steps from being in big TROUBLE! I witnessed a great pastor who went from taking over a church of 40 to becoming a church of 6000 in 10 years time, fall and fall hard. His fall was with women too!

He’ll get his swing back, Mark, but the days of the PGA Tour being intimidated of him are gone. I think some players exposed that chink in the armour the last 3 years, beating him head to head in majors. I mean, in that time, he has beat ……….(drum roll)………….. Rocco Mediate!!
He is human, and I think it bothers him what the gallery thinks of him now, and it is more than a little embarrassing for him for all the wild shots, over-par rounds, and needing Pavin to pick him for the Ryder Cup instead of qualifying for it.
I do wish Tiger well, nobody is perfect, so I won’t judge him.. As much as I’d like to think I wouldn’t be tempted in behaving like that if I were in his shoes, a 30-something year old billionaire athlete, with women falling all over you, every waking minute, I’m probably fooling myself.

Erin made out like a bandit. Remember, she was a nanny when she met Tiger. One think Tiger’s dad did not teach him was

Without Elin keeping watch, Tiger will be free to improve his lies, especially to the media and any fans that remain.
As for golf, I am beginning to enjoy the PGA on television. Now that Tiger is making more bogies than birdies, other pros are getting the attention they deserve. It’s amazing! No more swearing in front of cameras, no more dropped clubs, no more pouting.
Tiger could come back, I suppose. But he not longer has the advantage of distance or intimidation or the intangibles that made him great. Instead of commanding huge galleries and constant TV coverage, he’ll drop to the second tier, As for statistics, update them. Tiger is not the top golfer in the world. Far from it.
Tiger is beginning to look like the kid who passed wind in a crowded pool.

This low-class article is just an example of how the people love to wallow in other people’s mess.
It’s also an example of how some people delight in bringing down a certain demographic of folks they think have gotten a little to uppity for their liking. And you can read between the lines of that statement all you want.
Maybe we can move on and talk about the status of the game of golf with Tiger no longer a top contender. Have TV ratings dropped? What do advertisers and sponsors think of the game without Tiger’s dominating presence? That is an article worthy of reading, since it would impact our ability to enjoy a sport that so many took up due primary to Tiger Woods.

Golfers, more than ANY other athletes, are creatures of extreme habit.
Let’s be honest for a moment and admit that part of Tiger’s habits were to go out after a round to get drinks with his posse and pick up more than the check, if you know what I mean.
He should have divorced his wife from the get go, and not only for his career, but for his family. It was bound to happen, trying to hold on to what you ruined is never healthy.
He made a HUGE mistake getting married young. Derek Jeter has been playing the field, literally and figuratively, for 15 years now. He’s closer to 40 than 20. He’s not married. Because he knows the temptations are too much for ANY man.
The other guys who Tiger hangs with who got married young (like Jordan, for example) have ALL cheated on their wives.
Before anyone else throws any stones, there’s a certain beloved third baseman in this town who had daliance(s) of his own, albeit with a higher(?) class of waitress.
Tiger Woods was a complete dork his whole life. Doesn’t anyone remember this guy as a 20 year old Stanford student? Total nerd.
Why he married so young and never played the field, like Jeter did, is the real shame. He wasn’t ready. He was young, dumb, and should have been free to do all the things (women) he never got a chance to as a high school and college dork.
So his mistake here? Getting married in the first place.
But now that he’s divorced, he can get back to his routine without the sneaking or guilt. I’m sure he’s at a Perkins right now.
Next year Tiger is going to win no less than three majors. Guaranteed.

Tiger’s gonna come back stronger than ever soon! You watch. All the guys on here whining about his infidelity and having soooo many girlfriends; I’d bet most of them followed Tiger around the course like puppy dogs the last 10 years. Look. He messed up for sure, but ya gotta give this guy credit for his work ethic on the golf course. There has been no one like him that I ever remember and I’m 50. He needs his old routine back, kinda like the guy with the long hair. His just happen to be pubic. Let it go. Let him play. The girls will love him; he’ll “recover” and golf will be exciting again!

Mark, remember what happened to Tom McCollister when he said Nicklaus was washed up just before the ‘86 Masters? Tiger will win at least 20 professional majors (14 now), maybe as many as 24. He will win close to 100 PGA events (71 now). He will recover mentally, and that immense talent will carry him well into his forties (he turns 35 at the end of the year).
Do most people think about Kobe Bryant as anything other than a great basketball player at this point? Time passes, and all is forgiven. That doesn’t mean it was right, and he’ll never be admired in the way Jack Nicklaus, but he will be forgiven.

For those of you who may not know or selectively choose to omit JFK, Clinton ( not that they deserve to be mentioned in the same breath) Sinatra, Mantle, Ruth, Nicklaus and yes Arnie were legendary hounds. Guess what folks in today’s day and age you can’t sneeze without a camera phone catching you with snot on your shirt. Back in he day morals supposedly counted for more but the writers in the know kept things quiet according to the ‘gentleman’s code’ – so don’t judge as you nor I have, ever seen that ‘caliber’ of temptation not to mention begin to understand the dynamics of their individual relationships. I don’t condone it but please.. we’ll never know what it is like to have that lifestyle.

Sadly, his god is a golden fat boy statue budda…that is what is most sad about thie “intelligent” individual. However, his failures would be any of ours if we had his fame, money and power. I know of no one with his kind of success who has not have multiple moral failures. I would hope he can find genuine grace and get things turned around.

Let’s see, even after all of this and paying Elin. He is rich, single, and the number 1 golfer in the world. I don’t feel sorry for him, I feel envious.
Tiger isn’t the only golfer to have cheated, see Arnold Palmer and Fred Couples, he just needed to step his game up. Playa, he is not. Shouldn’t have ever got married to feed some fantasy.

Tiger’s an exceptional golfer. Unfortunately for his children and Elin, golf and empty relationships were his priorities. Any parent who spends as much time as Tiger did in the pursuit of all those women, is NOT a real dad. He was never really a husband either–not faithful from the beginning.

I am the same age as Tiger and have followed him for a long time. He is a tool. I’ve watched him scream and cuss and throw clubs all over the place. If any of us acted like he has on a golf course(let alone of the course) we would probably not be asked back. What a phony. He still doesn’t get it. All me myself and I in every interview. No need to feel sorry for Tiger. He brought this all on himself. Much in the same way that karma has proven to be a beeotch for Jay Mariotti, just on a grander scale.
Woods has long been a lout and a heel. He’s had a complicit media on his side covering his tracks, all afraid to lose access that doesn’t exist if they let the world see just how he really is. Therein lies the joke — sycophants afraid to lose access Woods wasn’t going to allow in the first place.
Though it’s poor form to speak ill of the dead, his old man was no prize, either. What separates him from Todd Marinovich’s dad? The protege’s success?
Funny how the late Mr. Woods would jingle change and create other distractions during his son’s backswing and now even the muffled noise of a shirt being buttoned 100 yards away leads to goon Stevie Williams being set loose to break thumbs in the crowd.
The living great champions — Nicklaus, Palmer, Player — all have something Woods does not possess and all his endorsements can never acquire.
It’s called class.
Enjoy the tail-cuttin’ at the hands of the Euros in Wales, Mr. Woods.

destin dawg, you can only say what has been talked about. how do you frigging know? do you real think that was the first clinton had or the only trist that jfk had and mlk was also a real womanizer it is said. these men were moral leaders for their nations or movements, one with the sclc behind it.
entitled folks treat others in a way that is inconceivable to most folks. lebron has only begun to be talked about in these terms. are you going to deny mj, a divorce, magic aids and wilt was it three a day man? among the top ten ballers in the nba in women and the sport. pat ewing hanging at the gold club here in atlanta, forget that too?
destin dawg please get real or wake up to it. your kidding right in your response? if not, i guess i better stop laughing.
so many pga golfers curse, drink, bet, play around it is part of the game and culture. these guys are not choir boys and most make a living by gaming for money on the side. the pga has straightened up the image but there were enablers for tiger. most recently there was a swingers club with a top two golfer suggested to be part of it. puhlese end the naivete’.

MB, you’re coming off as a bit of a Monday morning QB. when did the “failure” take place? was Woods a “successful” father and husband until he got caught? it seems to me that people of Tiger’s ilk do not rank the success or failure of a marriage as others do (for example, sports writers, tabloid journalists, etc.). there are many men who cheat discretely, and keep marriages/families intact. are they to be judged as “successful” when it comes to marriage? I am not defending Tiger Woods, but to each his (and her) own.

The guy is classless. Did you hear him say it had been hard on the children? Well , duh, are you that frigging stupid? Why didn’t you think about the children when you were running around with your 20 or more skanky women. I feel for Elin and yhe children and find it just terrible that a no class POS like this foul mouth spoiled punk will break records held by men of class like Jack Nichlos. As far as I am concerned Mr. Pavin should not select him to represent this country as I would not want this low life to represent me in anything. The man has no class at all.

Excellent riposte. And yes, wives cheat too.
Tiger bought into all the hype, he was godlike, insuperable. I don’t believe that he ever thought he could lose his marriage, he wasn’t in touch with reality. There was no way he could be with all these women and not be denuded eventually. Remember Elin, men want a lady on their arm and a whore in the bed.

I think I prefaced my original post just fine. Despite his success on the course in tournaments won, etc. Tiger will never be the champion that Jack & Arnie are.
They don’t cuss loudly or throw golf clubs when they hit a bad shot. They respect the game. They don’t make “lift the trophy, kiss the trophy” commercials that make a mockery of winning.
Tiger may be the greatest golfer ever – but if I want an example of how to carry myself as a champion, I’ll take Jack or Arnie – heck, even Ben Crenshaw – over Tiger any day.

a divorce doesn’t make you a failure at marriage. The guys screwed around on his wife and that’s bad for her – not for us. His golf game is screwed up because he gave up drugs – that’s bad for him not for us. Why do we take these things so personal? Tiger will rebound his game once his body adjusts to clean living. He’ll marry again most likely. Even if he doesn’t the world keeps turning.

I am as flawed as everyone else on this blog (because we all are). But my point is this. When you have no one to remind you that you are human, you begin to think that even your flaws are perfect. And because of that pride, your fall is that much more dramatic. Now think about this. If he had come to himself at some point along the way and decided not to go this route (marriage and the whole nine) he still would have been Tiger Woods. The difference is that he is now but a flicker of his former glory. I hope and pray that he returns to himself. Because Golf suffers when he does.

Tiger was in love with HIMSELF,still IS….thinks he is GODLIKE, still DOES….have some humility Tiger….50% of us men have been divorced, is humilating for a while….it has made me a much better husband for my second marriage, you eventually move on, ….he is so involved with his self-importance, what he claimed he would do, be nicer, more appreciative of fans,etc..was all BS….people will give others second chances, but you have TO EARN people’s respect…he has failed as a husband the first go around, he will not be the first nor the last…get OVER YOURSELF
