The Georgia coach as a big-screen TV star: Mark Richt at the Galleria. (Photo by M. Bradley)
Should Georgia go 1-11 this fall, Mark Richt wouldn’t just be in trouble — he’d be gone. But that’s thing: Georgia isn’t going to go 1-11, and at this moment Richt is in fine fettle, job-wise and otherwise. And it is, truth to tell, harder to imagine the Bulldogs headed to Shreveport again anytime soon than it is to foresee them winning the SEC East.
And that’s all Richt needs to do to coach Georgia another 10 years: Win big again.
The notion was driven home at the annual convocation of the Bulldog Club of Greater Atlanta on Monday night. The masses didn’t brave a thunderstorm to file into the Cobb Galleria with teeth gritted. No citizen of Bulldog Nation wants Richt to fail. He is liked and respected by his constituency, same as it ever was.
The only problem Georgia fans have with Richt is that he hasn’t won a championship since 2005, and even that differentiates him from his predecessors. Folks liked Ray Goff — he was a Bulldog born and bred, you’ll recall — but grew skeptical of his coaching acumen. The same folks believed Jim Donnan knew his X’s and O’s but never quite warmed to him personally. And neither could deliver a title.
Richt has — two of them, in fact. There are no questions about his bona fides. There’s only the question that tracks every coach in every sport: What have you won for me lately?
No fool, Richt knows what has (and has not) happened. Of 2010, he said Monday: “It’s a big year.” Then this: “I do think it’s got the team excited and feeling like they have something to prove. We want to get back in consciousness of college football — with the voters. That’s a big thing with our sport designed as it is.”
That’s a major concession a coach whose program had become a Top 10 staple — whose 2008 team was ranked No. 1 in preseason — to make: That Georgia these past two seasons hasn’t been Georgia-good. The good news is that UGA under Richt hasn’t ever stayed down long. Coming off 8-4 in 2001, it went 13-1 and took the school’s first SEC title it n a quarter-century. Coming 8-4 in 2006, it went 10-2 and finished No. 2 in the land.
There is, lest we forget, a deep reservoir of pride that runs beneath the Red & Black. Even with all the headlines of summer — arrests and suspensions and a pending NCAA investigation and Damon Evans’ resignation –this isn’t a program that sees itself as a throw-rug. And the season that commences Sept. 4 offers the chance for a large measure of redemption.
Said Richt: “The players feel the buzz. The coaches do, too.”
Speaking of coaches: Richt did something remarkable last winter. He fired most of his defensive staff, including a coordinator who was among his best friends. Bulldog-watchers weren’t sure he would, but he did. This told us that, for all the perceptions of loyalty as a weakness, this coach is steely enough to put his program first. And that’s what you’d want in a coach, is it not?
There were no shock-the-world revelations dispensed Monday night: Richt lauded Todd Grantham, his new defensive coordinator; said Aaron Murray, the new quarterback, “has ‘it’ “, and offered a hearty endorsement of Chick-fil-A’s spicy chicken sandwich. (Which shouldn’t be interpreted as coach lobbying to appear in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.) He even got a bit testy when someone mentioned Gator “dominance.”
Richt: “We need to get you in the locker room to fire the guys up.”
Richt wasn’t a Bulldog born, but from Day 1 in 2001 he has known what it means to coach these Bulldogs. He sees himself as the steward of a program that was beloved before he arrived and will be after he steps aside. He knows what Bulldogs want, and it’s more than just to win — it’s to feel good about winning.
“We want our fans to be proud,” Richt said. Then this: “We want to be proud.”

Well said. CMR will win big again…and will be neither a histrionic egomaniac, a waffling odd genius, or brat that defies explanation…
He will coach boys to men and win championships along the way…
BTW, UGA won the 2008 Sugar Bowl trophy…not a championship, but my goodness what a door prize…Georgia will be fine…

Mark,
Thanks for the report. There is only one team a year that can finish at the top, for all the rest it leads to an off-season of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Preparation, Luck, Scheduling, Shortcomings in areas you can’t control, and countless other factors play into the ultimate conclusion of every season.
For me, I hope to see a return to the well-disciplined, fundamentally-sound football we enjoyed during the first 5-6 years of CMR’s tenure. If we do that, conference and national championships will follow.

to be honest i feel like the young corners have more speed and athleticism than miller (too short) evans well he speaks for itself if the other team wanted to hit the big play go to evans jones was decent but he lacked the speed…. alot of the talent is sophmores juniors and red shirt freshmen… if aaron murray really has it then this could be a yr that spring board the next 3 to 5 yrs of always being in the hunt….as always im excited and im looking to see how teams will play when they put green and charles on the same side with brown and wooten or king or durham on the other side with ealey or king in the backfield? alot of options…. TEs and FBs are deep the corners and safeties are deep… i could on and on…..can’t wait to 9/4 then 9/11 to start off…. the rest will flow from their…

No excuses but I’ve never seen a line up of coaches in the SEC like now. It won’t be easy but if the defense plays Erk Russell smash mouth football, and I think we have our man now, the offense will light up like nobodys buisness. This defense can give our offense 40 minutes to get the job done with most teams.

P.S. Cute slogans and terms like “has it” and “feeling it”….and getting someone to “fire you up” in the locker room….isn’t going to beat the Gators. Great coaching, hard work, and year-long dedication to playing to the best of your ability will.
It should be a good game in Jax this year….if you can get by SC and Tenn…and Kentucky…and Vandy (that one should be easy this year)….etc. That South Carolina game could wreck “that feeling” if you are not careful. South Carolina has a great defense and will be an early challenge for your new QB. If he does well against that defense…then “that feeling” will get stronger.

“And that’s all Richt needs to do to coach Georgia another 10 years: Win big again.”
Well Duh! But the question still remains, can Richt win big again? The only way I see that happening is if Saban or Meyer leave. FSU was always the red headed step child to Miami, and they didn’t come into full dominance until Miami got hit hard by probation in the mid 90’s.And then when Miami got their act back together again in the early 2000’s, FSU went back to being the red headed step child. Unfortunately UGA is in the same boat.
“There’s only the question that tracks every coach in every sport: What have you won for me lately?”
No the problem many UGA fans have with Richt is that he hasn’t even been COMPETITIVE in rivalry games lately. The program has shown signs of going backwards not forwards! Losing is one thing, getting blown out is another! Richt’s loss to Florida in 2008 was the 2nd worst to the Gators ever( even worse than some of the Spurrier beatdowns)! Martinez’s defenses the last 2 seasons have given up the most points in UGA HISTORY! For all the good that Richt has done, his losses have been some of the worst in the program’s HISTORY!
“He fired most of his defensive staff, including a coordinator who was among his best friends. Bulldog-watchers weren’t sure he would, but he did. This told us that, for all the perceptions of loyalty as a weakness, this coach is steely enough to put his program first. ”
Yeah but he did it much too late! Great leaders don’t act when they have to, they act when they NEED to!

About the only thing that Richt REALLY needs to do –SOON & OFTEN– is beat FLORIDA. Yeah, yeah, a NC would be nice, but even that can be explained, as in the 2002 13-1 season when there were a couple of undefeated teams playing for the NC, and in 2007 when GA had lost a head-to-head match w/ TENN –Nobody wanted to play GA at the end of the 2007 yr; A two-loss LSU team went on to win the NC over a two loss GA team (rightfully so), but that’s twice that GA has been ‘close’. The one thing that cannot be accepted is GA losing to FL. And I know that FL is good now & loaded with talent, but so is GA. And GA was losing to FL BEFORE Tebow & Meyer, so there’s realy no excuse at all. GA was more talented & had better coaches, especially before Vangorder left. SO, that’s the one Monkey Richt HAS TO GET OF HIS BACK. Beat FL 50% of the time, and even without a NC, you’ll be around for a while. Don’t & you won’t, because I seriously believe if GA continues to lose to FL over the next 3-4 yr’s Richt will be gone. A NC would buy him 3-4 more yr’s, but any 3-4 yr run of lossing to FL I don’t believe will be tolorated. I hope he does because I like Richt & think he’s a Great guy. Let’s see what happens.

If he wants us fans to be proud, perhaps he should stop running a thug program where everyone gets arrested and where players are too stupid to wait more than a week to get DUIs right after the athletic director got canned for it. This clown has one more year to clean this mess up. We all want wins, especially over Florida, no doubt, but most of us want the disgraceful state of the program cleaned up even more. I remember when Coach Richt got to UGA he made Tony Gilbert cut his hair and said he better not see it out from under his helmet. Tony cut it and had a great year. Then as time has gone on Coach Richt changed his policy as afraid he would lose recruits and fear players wouldn’t want to abide by such rules. Well it has hurt him and the program. I am still glad and proud he is our coach and I think this year you will see the real Coach Richt that came in a cleaned up a mess where Jim Donnan let the Quincey’s of the world run the program. I think back to the gatorade bath before last years Tech game was over and he got pissed because the game was not over. I think you will see the Coach Richt we saw when he got the job.

Veteran agent Ralph Cindrich, a former NFL player who isn’t bashful about sharing his opinions (and we like that), recently appeared on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh to talk about the current commotion involving agents paying players.
Regarding the school that got the ball rolling, as it relates to NCAA enforcement efforts, Cindrich dropped a potential bombshell.
“[D]on’t put USC in your rear view mirror,” Cindrich said, via SportsRadioInterviews.com. “There is a lot more going on there. Those guys out there from neighborhoods that are deprived who are driving Range Rovers and the Mercedes and all the rest, they just earn that on their own on the weekends in the offseason.”
Cindrich also had some pointed comments for Nick Saban, who described agents who give money to players as “pimps.” As to whether there’s a difference between the way that college coaches and agents recruit, Cindrich said, “No. And old Nick knows that. I’ve seen him out on the road a time or two. He’s contacted a client of mine or a family member of a client of mine. I know what goes on out there and he knows that I know. The bottom line is that to stand up on a pulpit and start preaching that way — and maybe I’m doing it, take a shot at me — that bothers me, especially when it comes from a guy like Nick Saban.”
Though the issue likely will fade a bit as training camps open, it should continue to be a focal point of discussion and debate. And the root cause continues to be the reality that everyone involved with college football is getting paid handsomely, with the exception of the men who play the game. Above all else, that’s what needs to change.
Nick Saban is a lowlife cheating scumbag.

Here are some ideas that work for other teams – but then maybe DAWG fans wouldn’t be proud if they were adopted:
1. Drop the hammer on those who refuse to follow the rules on and off the field.
2. Don’t accept being the most penalized team in the SEC.
3. Set a better example than leading the team into the endzone after a touchdown and accepting the obvious penalty.
4. Teach the players some class, and put a stop to the trash talking, exhibitions after making a good play, diving into the endzone.

Agree with you frank james…I think we will see a different Coach Richt in many ways…I see alot of people still give him a hard time for some of his coaching decisions the last couple of years, but he did step up to the plate and dismissed alot of his coaching staff…yes some say he should have sooner and maybe so, but he did what he had to do for the good of the program and we should give him credit for that…Of course some of you will not, since you could do it so much better…It very easy to sit behind the computer and post what you would or would not do, its easy to second guess in life, but unitil you have been there and had to make the tought calls that football coaches have to make then don’t throw stones…Whether the changes will lead to SEC title or NC remains to be seen, but try and see the positive things Coach Richt and staff have done, and remember these other teams we compete against have good Coaches and players also its not like they are going to lay down for the dawgs…The margin for winning and losing in the SEC is small, too many good programs…Getting behind the dawgs and this coaching staff can only help us in all areas from recruiting to playing the game…If you want the other teams to continue to have a leg up on the dawgs then by all means keep bashing Coach Richt and the players… that should really bring some big time recruits on board…

The man has retained Bobo after taking what is collectively believed to be Far Too Long to unload Martinez – a blind man could have seen it years ago.
Arkansas and / or South Carolina could beat us…………………but if Florida beats us then Richt is in deep s…t. This annual loss 45 miles from Gainesville is no longer tolerable.

Let me make sure I understand the article. Mark Richt thinks he has it going on?????? We have a QB who has not played one NCAA game. We have no real “back up” QB when our not so great (contrary to popular belief) offensive line lets him get killed. Unless our new “Defensive Coach” is a miracle worker he can not “undo” the damage left from Martinez in just one year. We have possibly one of the weakest “Head Coaches” in Division 1 football. If we have any players left that have not been “arrested, detained or leave due to the mess that is Ga. Football” we may win 4 or 5 games-which brings me to our “first game”.
As much as I hate Spurrier he out coaches Richt every time and has lost to Ga. shearly because UGA had better atheletes. SC will beat our “Dawgs”, it will be nasty and set the stage for the rest of the year.

I’m so glad Coach Richt is a good man. It’s been 5 years since he won an SEC Championship. Jim Donnan coached Georgia for 5 years, didn’t win an SEC Title and he got fired? Why? Because he lost to Georgia Tech. Mark Richt has lost to Florida 7 times in 9 tries and one of them was against a Ron Zook team the week after he got fired. That’s not exactly a stellar record against the team you have to beat. Heck he lost to Florida both times he won the SEC. Mark Richt is a good man. That’s the best thing you can say about a man. The best thing you can say about a football coach is that he’s brilliant and wins big games. Sorry but you can’t say that about him. He’s a lightweight. A blind fool can win eight games a year at Georgia with all the advantages it has. Mark Richt averages around ten…he’s slightly better than average, but as long as Urban Meyer is at Florida, he will never be the best coach in the SEC East.

Who gives a darn about what Meyer thinks. Anybody that lets a kid claw eyes of another player and only suspend him a half. What a joke!

Donnan deserved another year, Goff deserved one less year. On Richt, he runs a clean program, is a proven winner, and does his best to pull off the impossible — have a crystal ball in recruiting.
I’m in his corner no matter what happens this season. But if he has a bad season and something happens (doubtful), then I’ll attribute it to a cold hard fact about UGA fans: They’re some of the very worst in the conference. GIve me the average South Carolina fan over the average UGA fan any day.
That was even true in the Herschel Walker years. UGA fans weren’t even pleased then, even when UGA was winning SEC titles. They always found something to criticize. I know because I was in the stadium listening to them.

All this talk is good but I hope it translates to the field. No more 41-10’s …. EVER
Cut penalties by 70%
Knock off the shuck and jive on the side lines. Starters when not playing should be with their unit and their coaches. Reserves should be standing with the helmets in hand cheering on their teammates.
Turnover and even loses are going to happen. Let’s make them happen less and not happen stupid.

Richt is beginning to sound like Donut Donnan. Donnan got pissed off when someone questioned his coaching, so he yelled at the guy, ” have you ever coached football at any level?” the fan said no but I did play football and I also contribute $25,000 dollars a year to this program so I think I have the right to ask you a question!!! This is the same when Richt bristled when someone asked him about the Gators and he said “we need you in the locker room to get them fired up” (WRONG AMONDO) Richt was hired to be in the locker room to get them fired up not some fan who is just asking a question. Someone needs to ask Richt about the Gators because he is clueless about them! He nuts up the minute he walks on the field with them, I quess he is questioning God why he can’t come down and help him out because he sure can’t do it on his own!!!!!!!

I think when you look back on Richt’s top three seasons, 2002, 2005 & 2007, what sticks out to me is the +14 to +19 scoring margin. Same with 1980, big + scoring margin.
The guys played with confidence.
The games have been too close the past two seasons, last season’s scoring margin was all the way down to +1, the margin for error has consequently shrunk, and things that Georgia used to get away with, start costing games. Confidence shrivels.
When you’re scoring margin is so low, a bad call, a few penalties, or a couple of turnovers can cost you several games. You can’t play with confidence.
Georgia needs to dominate teams, with a swagger, and realize that confidence and scoring margin, go hand in hand.
If the offense can average 35-40 points a game,
and the defense can hold to an average of 14-20 points a game,
gonna be a great year.
I want to see:
1) 1st quarter dominance- building confidence early
2) Dominating 1st 3 games by +20 scoring margin
3) Finish the season with a +20 scoring margin like Florida & Bama are doing–scoring margin = confidence.

You make a very good point, Nick, because margin of victory is what separates the 5-0 #1 ranked team from the 5-0 #12 ranked team in the polls.
As long as college football refuses to do what every other sport does and decide the champion via the playoffs, margin of victory is the yardstick that determines who plays for a national championship.
In most other sports it is looked upon as a non-classy behavior to run up the score but in college football it is a necessary evil, although there are limits, as in anything.

No Bush was a HORRIBLE President! Worst 2 term president we’ve ever had! No contest! Not saying Obama is great, but he’s not as bad as Bush was, at least not yet. Its just like in football: it all comes down to leadership. When UGA finished 8-5, everyone blamed Willie or Bobo, but at what point does it become Mark Richt’s fault too, you know? He’s the one that is putting these guys in these positions. When they underachieve, it doesn’t speak well of his evaluation of personnel.
I mean 365 to 173 is a butt whipping for the Republicans, just like how the Democrats used to get their brains beat out by the Republicans in the 80’s. When you lose an election that badly at what point do you say” ” You know what, we need to reevaluate what we are doing because it is clearly not working”. I’m so sick of the blame game from both sides. Except responsibility for your own actions, good or bad; and then learn from them.

The ugump athletic department has spent thousands of dollars this year to try to really instill some school spirit. The rumor is that coach Richt personally consulted fashion icon Ralph Lauren to come up with this years uniforms. Each player has been personally fitted by their very own fashion consultant. And, to avoid uniforms that do not properly fit, coach Richt has decided to not work his players very hard this summer and has moved away from the traditional two-a-day practice sessions.

I have no idea how we can be proud about this 2010 season already us # 1 in the nation in Fulmer Cup Standings for 2010 today with several little coeds abused by Top 10 recruits in the nation at their position, and knowing that after this 2010 season that we lose 15 seniors and 4-5 juniors – all starters.
Certainly 10-10 vs SEC East over the last 4 years has included not only 1-3 vs Florida beating their worst 4-Loss team only, but more telling 1-3 vs 4 really lousy vols’ teams, 2-2 vs 4 even worse Kentucky teams and for good measure a loss to a 6-6 South Carolina team not even in a bowl game and a Loss to a 4-win Vandie team that accumulated the 4 wins including vs UGA.
If there is something to be proud about that, it is not readily apparent to those who say that 10-win seasons when 7 of the 9 Coach Richt Era were 14-game seasons, means that we have FAILED to even reach The SEC Championship Game the last 5 years in a row at 10-3 average over 9 years of really sorry coaching staffs Coach Richt put forth under the impression that NFL coaches were only in it for the money with no loyalty.
I love Coach Richt, not his staff any of the 9 years, the last 4 of which have been nothing short of 3rd worst in the nation in arrests / suspensions, # 96 worst at Average NCAA Rank in Penalties the last 4 years, 21 fumbles a year every year of the last 4 and 14 interceptions a year every year of the last 4 years.
12-2
July 27th, 2010
2:33 am
Now, we have a soft easy schedule 2010 and then lose the whole entire team, after 2010.
In the 9 years of the Coach Richt Era, we have not done as well as Florida, LSU and now Alabama has passed us by as well. 20-12 vs SEC over the last 4 years has put us squarely in 4th place in The SEC over these last 4 years. And, 10-10 vs SEC East the last 4 years has put us in 3rd place in our division, even. If I am supposed to be Proud of any of that, I am NOT.
We can make hay this season. And, Coach Richt knows it.
Personnel Decisions on Offense have been absolutely mind-boggling – none more so than not preparing a Quarterback for 2006, 2009, and now again 2010.
Of the teams BETTER than Georgia in our own Conference, The Georgia Bulldogs DO NOT PLAY Alabama and LSU, and the only game we have is against Florida with Coach Richt 2-7 vs Florida and 1-4 vs Urban Meyer.
12-2
July 27th, 2010
2:34 am
There is no reason why UGA cannot be 12-2 losing to Florida and Alabama; now that would be something to be Proud of. We should not lose any other game. 2011 is a completely different story, back to 10-3 and folks saying that being the 3rd worst in the nation at arrests / suspensions from 2006 to present and not even playing in The SEC Championship Game is something to be proud of.
It is NOT; I am NOT proud of that; I do POINT IT OUT so that we will ADDRESS IT, rather than sweep it under the carpet amid comparisons with Jim Donnan’s last 4 years of 13 losses for which he was fired compared to Coach Richt’s last 4 years of 14 Losses.
38-14 the last 4 years is good for # 19 in the nation in won / loss record, yet UGA is # 11 All-Time for 1-A wins in college football.
We are NOT where we need to be and frankly our men’s basketball program is in better shape for 2010 than we are in football; and, we don’t even have a gymnasium just the Stegosaurus.

@nick:
good post. i especially think that getting out of the blocks more quickly has got to be a point of emphasis for us this year. we had to come from two touchdowns back to beat USC, arkansas and auburn, and spotting florida 14 points in the first quarter essentially doomed us (4 second half turnovers didn’t help, but you wonder how many of those we commit if we aren’t so far behind that we have to force the ball down the field).
our offense works better when we’re ahead because the play action is more credible, and our defense works better bc our guys can pin their ears back and/or jump routes. looking forward to a good year and to getting back to playing tough and disciplined football that CMR has gotten us used to watching.

Vick, Northwinds, agree with both of you. Coaches really need to step up and enforce discipline on the field and sidelines. No more penalties because of players doing stupid things such as showboating after plays, hitting opposing players out of bounds, etc. The spectacle of player groups rapping during games on the sideline should not be tolerated. They need to be focused on the reason they are there wearing UGA uniforms. I am not trying to be critical of everything that has transpired the last several years but enough is enough of some of the stuff that is so obvious. Fix it and move on. Here is hoping for a good year.

I love the Georgia program and I like Richt a lot. However my pride in the program has taken a beating with all the annual Dawgs get drunk and then get stupid problems. If he REALLY wants us to take pride in the program, begin with instilling a lot more discipline. The young men in red and black can’t help the team on the field if they’re suspended from playing because they acted like idiots off the field. Richt needs to get control of his program. If he does I think he’ll find the focus and commitment of his charges in practice and on the field will be sharply increased and he’ll win big again. But the longer these annual problems continue, the more Richt will undermine his own position. He can’t just talk the talk . . . he needs to walk the walk. I want Richt to succeed but my patience with him will not be everlasting.

UGA folks can brag all you want to about beating Tech in football most years, and that’s perfectly fair. What’s also fair is to point out that with a history of Jan Kemp (Vince Dooley days), Jim Harrick, and now Damon Evans, the UGA Athletic Department is truly “The Cesspool of the South,” and is richly deserving of that title. No one outside of Georgia has any respect for your University or your Athletic Department, and that is a fact. It has been said many times: “Tech people are proud of their school, Georgia people are proud of their football team.” What a legacy to be proud of!

750 K Athletic funding has nothing to do with academic funding. That $750,000 to hire Grantham did not take a penny from UGA academic budget. UGA coaching salaries are less than several other SEC schools, but the Dogs are paying market-based salaries.
Taylor Wooten I realize you were joking about UGA’s athletics being mediocre, with lagging facilities, but a few might actually believe you, so I m here to set the record straight for any newcomers unaware of the Dogs athletic prowess.
Facilities:
Sanford Stadium, Basketball/Gymnastics practice arena, Tennis complex: Second to none. A few may be comparable, none better.
Stegeman- needs an upgrade, and getting it. Not as bad to watch a game as people think that do not attend
Other facilites: as good, or better in most every area as our rivals
As to whether or not our program is mediocre, I will let the readers decide:
National Championships: football, baseball, men’s tennis, men’s golf, women’s tennis, women’s golf, women’s swimming, gymnastics
Plus 132 SEC titles
That is setting the bar pretty high for mediocre.

It’d be nice for UGA to win the east and it is possible (long shot), but they would have to do with at least one loss to the hated Gators. UF plays Mississippi State and then they have an off-week before the Georgia game. The Dawgs, on the other hand, play a tough road game in Lexington before flying down to Jacksonville to play their 8th or 9th consecutive game. Anyone who thinks the “neutral” site is not an advantage for the Gators in this day and age is absolutely insane. When Florida was a rural, scarcely populated, economically underdeveloped tourism state, the playing field was even in Jacks because Georgia was so much more of an established state and program. No longer. There is not a team in the country who could go to the Gators’ back yard year-in and year-out and have a winning record. Until the economic bribery from the City of Jacksonville stops, Florida’s domination will continue. Trust me, that program doesn’t need a head start to compete with anyone.

Baseball is mediocre…on the field and off. Foley Field sucks.
The other sports are just noise. Nice if you like tennis and gymnastics.
Our “peers”, FL, AL, SC and TN blow us out of the water in these 3 major sports.
FL wins SEC and Natl Championships in football, basketball. Strong baseball.
AL wins SEC and Natl Championships in football, great facilities. Strong baseball.
SC wins Natl Championships in baseball, great facilities. Good-strong in football, Great bsktball facilities.

If we had an offensive staff like our defensive staff, I’d tell you we have a top 5 team. BUT, when you have a former player (who was a WR at UGA) and he is the RB coach, it makes ZERO sense. We have Mike Bozo as offensive coordinator and we have an average at best WR coach. Our Oline coach is one of the best in the game, the other 3, I wouldn’t pay them $10 to coach at UGA. Get it right or get it gone. Willard Martini and Fabris were an embarrassment to UGA football and shame on Richt for allowing that for YEARS. Grow a pair Richt.

1. UF is located in one of the most talent rich states in the country. You guys should be able to dominant UGA most years simply based on that fact alone.
2. The point I was making with the Ole Miss reference is that some teams match up well against others. Florida clearly has been able to handle UGA yet struggles with Ole Miss or Auburn; teams that UGA has been able to handle with relative ease. Sometimes a team can just have you number and right now Florida has UGA’s just like Ole Miss has Florida’s.

Mark what is so “remarkable” about doing your job?? Isn’t that what he gets paid 3 million dollars per year to do? No, the truth is there is nothing “REMARKABLE” about it.
The only “remarkable” thing about the whole situation was that Richt kept them around for as long as he did, when they should have been fired years earlier. It had become quite obvious to everyone in and out of Sanford stadium (minus Richt of course) that at least Martinez needed to be fired long ago. Heck even the little old blue haired ladies caught on faster than Richt.
Mark your are by far the best sports writer the AJC has and I normally agree with just about all of your points but there is absolutely, positively noting “remarkable” about firing overpaid, under-performing personnel.

There seems little doubt that SEC football is defined in the national sports media by Alabama, Florida, and LSU. As it should be, given their success on the national stage. I’m not sure how much that matters to UGA fans, who can argue endlessly about the puts and takes of CMR’s teams and whether or not they’ve done us proud. While it’s true that only one team can win it all, that team has come from our conference often enough that we should be able to figure out who the contenders will routinely be. UGA has had its moments, but it’s clearly not a routine contender, and after the last two seasons, has to prove that it hasn’t slipped away from the possibility of contending. Until Florida hits the skids, UGA goes nowhere unless it beats them on the field. Somebody did, somebody does—why can’t we? Ouside of that, it’s backslaps and atta boys for nice guy CMR as long as he keeps the team good enough to drive revenue and beat Tech.

One can feel good about winning without actually winning. One can also feel bad about winning, such as winning 7, or 5, or 3 games in a season. The implication of that quoted statement seems to be that he wants the Bulldogs to feel good about winning, no matter how many games they win.

The families of the bail bondsmen and probation officers. The bail bondsmen are independent businessmen, and they get a percentage of the bail amount since they put up the bond. As to probation officers, they deal with criminals released on probation from prison or jail. Fixed salary for them, but the greater the need, the more are hired.

UGA in football has ruined the tailgate tradition.
We have refused to build an Indoor Practice Facility, yet it has rained every day for the last 3 weeks. This despite the fact that we gave hundreds of millions of dollars to Red Panties Skank cheating AD, who only said that we will NOT borrow money to build it, like everyone else on Real Estate decisions spread out over 30 years.
Stegosaurus does not need an upgrade, but to be removed and 1 built on par with other basketball facilities. Knoxville has what they have ? Lexington has what they have ? And, we have a cow palace that seats half what they have.
Foley Field is a joke. We have more fans sitting in Kudzu that we do not consider part of the attendance.
Not only Ander Landers, but Coach Mark Fox deserve a real basketball gym and would sell out twice the number of seats we have now making money to pay for the gym in short order. We also would sign MORE great basketball players from this state.
Instead, you make excuses Monticello Dawg for being 10-10 the last 4 years vs SEC East, good for # 3 vs SEC East the last 4 years because of 4 years average 21 fumbles 4 years average 14 interceptions 4 years average # 96 NCAA Rank penalties, 4 years average 38-14 in won / loss record good for # 19 in the nation yet we were the # 11 team in 1-A Wins All-Time, and you sit there and make excuses or attempt to ignore that over the last 4 years Georgia is # 3 worst in the nation in Fulmer Cup Standings

Ole Miss does NOT have Florida’s number.
And, dan, there is NO EXCUSE for 2-7 vs Florida by Coach Richt.
NONE.
1-3 Ron Zook
1-4 Urban Meyer
All Coach Richt does is COMPLAIN about the game being in JAX every year and how UNFAIR that is to his players who cannot acclimate he says to the humid temperature in 1 day, while he LETS Urban Meyer come up here and STEAL our best players on OFFENSE from this state instead Coach Richt is desperate for.

Richt needs to get the florida game out of jacksonville for the Dawgs to have a better chance of winning—that’s step 1! Florida has all the advantages–a short bus ride to the game, more fans, etc. The dawgs have to travel hours to the atlanta airport then fly to jacksonville. Plus, dawg fans get hosed by ripoff hotel owners in jax and most florida fans just drive to the game for the day. The new Ga AD needs to get this game moved to athens ASAP! I’m tired of going down there and watching another blowout loss.

UGAs finest coaches have come up from FLA or over from ALA. Coach Richt needs to treat his players less as prima donna gentlemen and more as adolescents. Forget the loco parentis garbage on campus and get back to common sense, parenthood, hard love treatment of juveniles. Work on personal conduct as a sign of individual responsiblility to team respect.
Raised in Athens, graduated TECH, go UGA 11-1.

This country is still in a post-Reagan hangover. I’m hoping that we’ll elect another great one in my lifetime. Our country desperately needs that – 2012 would be a good time to start.
Please god no more Reagans. He bankrupted California before taking office and then ran the US dept from 1 trillion when he took over to 4 trillion when he left.
No Thanks.
Give me a Clinton who actually balanced the budget. Of course it took W all of 15 days to blow that.

Bubba Gumption, you are just wrong. Any school that took 59 years to win a conference championship like the Gators and got hit with major probation in ‘84 and ‘90 for serious violations is fair game for dissing. Besides, Georgia holds the overall series lead and we whipped them pretty good in ‘07.
Hell, if nothing else the fact that they wear Orange and Blue and have some of the ugliest uniforms this side of Oregon (did you see those clownish uniforms in the SEC Championship game?) is reason enough to diss them.
And finally, Georgia has been winning championships since WW II. That’s called tradition. The Gators think that football was invented in 1991 when Spurrier lead them to their first championship.
When I can’t diss UF anymore, it’s time to give up college football.
By the way, Alabama lost to La.-Monroe less than three seasons ago. You’d figure that alone would be good for about 5 years of humility, but apparently that’s not the case.

“Give me a Clinton who actually balanced the budget. Of course it took W all of 15 days to blow that.”
Give me a Clinton who has some common sense and knows squat about national security, and I’d take you up on that. Unfortunately the guy who held office from ‘93-’01 couldn’t see past the U.S. economy. Which was going into a recession when he left office, by the way.
As for Reagan, I didn’t think his greatness as President was seriously debated by anyone seeing how he won the Cold War and turned around the dreadful Carter economy, but I guess we all see things differently.

What does that title mean? Urban Meyer just announced he wants Florida fans to be embarrassed this season. Guess AJC writers are running out of catchy pick me up titles for articles. Next one should read: “Richt Want’s to Win more than He Loses.”

@ Mark Bradley:
“Speaking of coaches: Richt did something remarkable last winter. He fired most of his defensive staff, including a coordinator who was among his best friends. Bulldog-watchers weren’t sure he would, but he did. This told us that, for all the perceptions of loyalty as a weakness, this coach is steely enough to put his program first. And that’s what you’d want in a coach, is it not?”
He should ave fired Willie years earlier. He only did it when he waited as long as he could, basically to save his own a$$. You know it and the fans know it. This kind of write-up, while ignoring the reality of the situation at that time, is poor journalism.

The Kentucky game was not a proud moment.
Fans leaving, before Cox got the ball again on the last drive, in DROVES, filing out of the stadium, because they all knew how it would end.
With ANOTHER turnover.
And they were right.
I guess the 4 turovers, in the 2nd half, seemed to the fans like Georgia had dropped down a level.
It was the lowpoint in Richt’s career so far.

Coach Richt had made us proud.
.769 winning %, top 5 in the country. 90 wins in 9 seasons. 6, top 10 finishes. The runs in 2002 & 2007, ended at #2 & #3. Top 10 recruiting classes. Excellent academics. 50+ players into the NFL.
It’s been a great run. Coach Richt has conducted himself with dignity and class, every step of the way.
Georgia is lucky, we have a coach, whose teams have finished in the final top 10, 19 times since 1986. 4 top 10 finishes in a row at Georgia.
Mark Richt hasn’t had 2 consecutive seasons outside the final top 10 in his ENTIRE COACHING CAREER, since 1986. 24 years.

2008 Coach Richt is # 13 Top 25 Final AP Poll

Oh, that’s just the last 2 years ?
What about 2006 ?
2006 Coach Richt is # 23 in the Top 25 Final AP Poll.
Therefore,
3 of last 4 years Coach Richt has NOT been in Top 10 Final AP Poll

If ……… ( yes, I know but why not? ) UGA wins the EAST ( maybe with one SEC loss? ) and then plays and loses to Alabama in the SEC Championship game and then, UGA goes on to the Sugar Bowl as the Second BEST in the SEC …………then, that is a fabulous year by anyone’s standards.
To achieve all of this and end up maybe at 12-1 or 11-2 …………..UGA would easily be ranked at year end around # 7- #9 or # 10. Take tech in 2009, ACC champs but they ended up like 14th. This is the power of the SEC Baby!! SEC East Champs, then a major bowl win and we end up 7th or 8th maybe. This would be one fabulous REBUILDING YEAR. The UGA haters would be so jealous too.
Now ………..for 2011 …………. UGA ideally needs to win the SEC outright and make some real national noise. This is every Bulldog’s goal.
Step one for 2010 is very do able. It starts in less than 5 weeks!!!
Go Dogs.

UGA has alone won 8 games or more for 13 years in a row and this year will make it 14 years in a row. Fabulous winning streak over the long haul and this is what makes a solid program ………not one major bowl like with Tech ( first in 42 years ) or one title somewhere and then back into obscurity. Urange Bowl blowouts do reinforce the fact that that school is a fluke with a gimmicky offense. Iowa was big and farmer boy slow.
IS there one other school that can claim that ” 8 or more” w-i-n-n-i-n-g streak? Nope, you UGA hater dope!
Richt is fabulous and UGA and Texas alone are the two BIG BOY $$$ revenue schools with BRANDING …………..money talks and mouthy UGA detractors walk.
ESPN commentators said during the Evans thing that the “UGA AD job is one of the 3 or 4 best in the USA ………….only Florida or Texas or Ohio State compare”. Think ……….UGA has NO NC lately and it is STILL ONE of the 3 or 4 BEST AD jobs. Why?? Fans, $$$ and facilities and um, ah did I say $$$.
Go Dogs. Your detractors are jealous haters. you also are uneducated.

Yeah, UGA needs to turn things up a notch for Richt to continue to deserve his job, but its true, UGA by and large wants to rise again with Richt at the helm. It’d be storybook stuff for college football too – whose the last coach of a bigtime program to last a long time? I suppose there are the Mack Browns, Jim Beamers, and the Paternos, but its few and far between enough for UGA to have something unique going. I hope Grantham and the defensive staff have revamped the program and lit a wildfire.

Ya Mark Richt won 2008 BCS bowl game against an almost NCAA Division 1-AA team The University of Hawaii, woop de doo. When will GA finally play a hard bowl game like everyone else does in the SEC. Oh ya, do you dumb GA fans remember the #1 rank you had in 2008-2009 season?? GaTech beat you and FL and BAMA spanked your world. That was the closest you guys will ever see to a National Title. How does that Cory Smith song go “Wish it was ‘82 when we use to beat FL” 23-3. Go to classes so you can all become janitors one day haha
