Which coaching pair is better: UGA’s Marks or Tech’s Pauls?

Four men, all named after saints. Two led their respective teams to conference championships in their second seasons. One played for a national championship in his fourth season. The other has been in place a little over a year and has stirred enthusiasm where none existed.
For Georgia, two Marks: Richt coaches football, Fox basketball.
For Georgia Tech, two Pauls: Johnson coaches football, Hewitt basketball.
For you, one question: Which pair would you rather have?
It’s not an easy call: Johnson just took his Jackets to the ACC championship, and Hewitt’s Jackets just played for the ACC title. Richt’s Bulldogs haven’t graced the SEC title game since 2005, and Fox’s Hounds — sorry, still can’t resist — finished last in the SEC East.
Were I picking the best pure coach of the four, I’d pick Johnson. Were I picking the coach who has known the most sustained success at the highest level, I’d pick Richt. But that’s not today’s exercise.
Think of this as an alternate-shot tournament in golf. If you take PJ of GT, you also have to take Hewitt. And the same on the Georgia side: If you choose Fox, you have to take Richt. And that said …
Loading ...I’d pick the two Marks over the two Pauls.
I’d pick the Marks because I believe Richt’s team is about to get really good again, and I’m not sure Hewitt’s ever will. And, as noted yesterday, I like what Fox is doing with Georgia. (He’s already 1-0 against the Jackets.)
But that’s just me, and I’ve been known to be wrong. And this isn’t as much about me as about you. So here’s your chance.
On Election Day, please cast your vote. And just this once, ticket-splitting is not allowed.

I really don’t think Johnson wins 11 games last year if Tech was in the SEC. Georgia was at the bottom of every category in defense, and we won the game. Lot’s of better defense’s in the SEC better than Georgia. I love to read the take from Tech fans about the last two meetings. The 3 point win in Athens was an A$$ whipping and the Georgia win this year was ” closer than it looked”……..great, great spin…………….

D-Nice……………………..You did watch the last two Tech bowl games didn’t you…..fast, Athletic teams with time to prepare= total shut down………………. Take 50% of options off the table( passing) and it’s gravy time for a great defense….Watch Iowa tape again. Painful.

Well here’s my two cents worth. I really like Mark Richt. But if I’m truly honest I have to admit that Johnson is a better developer of talent. Georgia wins the talent contest almost every year but under Richt’s watch, he hasn’t always gotten the most out of it. I’m not saying that there aren’t talented players at GT just that UGA gets more of it year in and year out. Johnson on the other hand seems to do the most with the least. If Tech ever begins to get talent comparable with Georgia, Richt will be in trouble. As for round ball it’s the opposite. Year in and year out it’s Tech with the better athletes. But rarely does Hewitt get the most out of his charges. It may be too early to draw comparisons with Fox, but there’s no doubt that he did a superb job with his under talented team last season. The best thing about Fox though is that athletes are no longer ignoring the Georgia basketball program. And that bodes well for the Dawgs to start competing with Tech to keep the program stocked with talent on a continuous basis. I wouldn’t trade either Mark for either Paul. But there’s also no doubt that I wish CMR was more like PJ in some ways.

This is simply a poll of UGA grads vs Tech grads, and we already know which has the greatest numbers, so it is rather useless….. Otherwise, which has most recently been to the final 4 and which has most recently won their conference? Which football team is ranked higher going into the season? Which was ranked higher at the end of last season? Which one has over achieved? Which one under achieved?

Look at what happened to FSU when Mark left and look at what Georgia became when he arrived. His only flaw has been letting other coaches have more control. That and key injuries have been the biggest problem with the team, but again, we are talking about a good program have let down years. It is clear he is taking back control. Fox may be able to build a basketball team but we will not care. It is a football school. Basketball is a distraction. Fun too beat a tech or Florida in hoops, but I would trade ten basketball titles for one football title.
