That rumble you heard earlier today was the sound of laughter rolling across the great state of Georgia. Da’Rick Rogers, the receiver from Calhoun who famously spurned the Bulldogs to sign with Vince Dooley’s son at Tennessee, was arrested in Knoxville at 1:50 a.m. for disorderly conduct after what we old folks used to call a barroom brawl.
(If you haven’t read esteemed colleague Chip Towers’ explanation of the matter, please do. The Chipster is to college recruiting as Target is to shopping — comprehensive and classy.)
It’s human nature to delight in the misfortune of a rival, especially a rival that snatched a recruit who’d committed to you eight months before Signing Day. But we must also note, for the sake of fairness, that the Georgia program isn’t immune to arrests — not of teenage athletes, not even of a 40-year-old athletics director.
I was talking to a Georgia Tech man last weekend, and he was trying — and mostly succeeding, I should report — not to chuckle over Damon Evans’ plight. Because we old folks can tell you young ‘uns that the fan base that laughs today is invariably the next to be embarrassed. (It’s uncanny how that works, but work it does.)
No school holds the patent on good behavior. No school can ever be inoculated against the misjudgments of young athletes, or even 40-year-old ADs. I understand why Georgia fans find Rogers’ arrest amusing, but I’ve also been around long enough to caution against irrational exuberance.
There’s always another arrest waiting to happen in a college town, and that town could well be yours. Bradley’s Rule: Tempt not the football gods by busting a gut laughing, lest tomorrow ye weep bitter tears.
Update: Tennessee coach Derek Dooley announced Friday night he has kicked safety Darren Myles Jr., who’s from Atlanta’s Carver High, off the team and indefinitely suspended Marlon Walls and Greg King for their part in the incident. Da’Rick Rogers has not been suspended.

I couldn’t help but note on a Tennessee news paper web site that the owner’s wife said that they always let the players enter the bar without paying the cover charge. If the owner is a booster, ticket holder, whatever, wouldn’t that be an NCAA violation of some sort?

It seems to be the culture of D1 athletes to think they are above the law. The Rogers punk has been posting pics of him drinking on his facebook page since his arrival in OB-Knoxville. Does the phrase “lack of institutional control” fit? Methinks it does. It is past time for the NCAA to bring down the hammer on UT

Rad Dog, I agree grammar cops on blogs are as annoying as parking ticket maids, but that could qualify as plagarism — plagarism isn’t simply word for word copying. However, the phrase is a trite one used in recruiting by writers the world over. … But banning lou would be a great thing, if anything for the fact that the “grammar cop” doesn’t capitalize the first letter in his name.

I actually went to RTR, a VOL blog, to see how they were taking all of this and I did not see ONE hateful post from a Dawg fan. So while we are feeling UT’s pain for all of this I personally have no sympathy for Mr. Rogers, ye will reap what you sow! On the other hand for UT this could not have come at a better time. Coach Dooley has a free pass for at least one year so drop the hammer right now and set the tone for the future of the program.

You wonder what these young men, and in Damon’s case, middle aged men, are thinking to throw it all away for one stupid night. But, we’ve all done stupid things, we’re all way too human.
Human nature doesn’t change much, so the Dogs will be facing their own
struggles with their football players each month if past history is any indicator.

Why didnt you make this point following Evans’ arrest? You didnt call for anyone to “curb their enthusiasm in criticizing Evans. Instead, you and the AJC enthusiastically crucified Damon Evans, even going so far as to report every detail of his arrest and publishing via internet the arrest report which was written by an obviously unprofessional and biased state trooper. Granted, Evans made a huge mistake and deserved to lose his job. I just dont think you are consistent when you go all out to report the details of Evan’s arrest and call for his firing, then when something happens with a Tenn. player you call for restraint.

Good article. I learned my lesson last year when I was boasting against someone’s school and here and three days later Nukeese and the boys were arrested for armed robbery.
I don’t blame the fans for the other teams on here. Its always more fun when its not your team.

Mark, I see your point. BUT, if something unfortunate happened to Lebron James, would Clevelanders be happy? Would the backwoods Vol fans (I say fans because none of them are alums or actually attended school) be happy if something unfortunate happened to Kiffin? This is similar. Rogers looked the UGA coaches in the eye time and time again and said he was committed. UGA did not recruit more receivers because they took Rogers for his word. He never confirmed to UGA the rumors that he was being whored out by Mike Nash and that he was going to UT, UGA coaches had to find out via an empty fax machine and by looking on the UT signing list. So pardon if i don’t feel sorry for this lying scum and I chuckle. They Have been laughing at UGA over Lemay and Evans for weeks now

You guys make it sound like UGA has the most undisciplined program in America when they have guys getting arrested for motor scooter violations and playing with firecrackers, then when UT players get involved in really violent crimes (as have a few UGA players over the years) you write this article to make the UGA fans out to be the bad guys. Ironically, with all the trash-talk about UGA these days (no program is immune to this stuff), Rogers might have made it over the hump in a program like Richt’s. Now, he may never play a game at UT. Plus, he gave up the opportunity to play with guys like Aaron Murray, A.J. Green, Marlon Brown, Orson Charles, and many others. We Georgia fans can gloat all we want. It’s his own fault. All of this just puts Tennessee’s arrival back into contention in the SEC just that much farther back. I hate it for Coach Dooley. In the mean time, Go Dawgs !!!!

Mark Bradley just identified himself as a “looney liberal”. The use of the word “guffawing” ranks right up there with “chortling”. Those two words are in the “Book of Phraseology” for liberal sports writers. When I see those two words I feel like “throwing down” (as opposed to “up”, gravity takes over).

MB, your words would be wise in a different context. But you’re forgetting that you’re a sports writer talking about college football. Part of the fun of it all is gloating at the misfortunes of rivals and having to deal with your own team’s misfortunes. The ups and downs, the smack-talking, the rivalries–all this makes things fun. UGA fans: gloat all you want. Obviously,we’ll have similar situations that will cause fans of other schools to gloat. WHO CARES? THIS IS WHY IT’S FUN TO BE A FAN!

It is a tragic situation which is all too common now in our society especially among the youth. This is a thug mentality and disrespect for all authority.
Mark, you are certainly correct with your advice…and maybe you should remember this advice when UGA is on the other end. You try to minimize this episode as an old fashioned ‘barroom brawl’ like it was the good old days.
I won’t use this unfortunate event for UT as a cause for celebration, but you must admit far less severe episodes at UGA are blown out of proportion, especially by the AJC. Anything half this explosive would be dealt with by expulsion and I can give examples. The Myles kid has a court date Aug 12 for the very same charges incurred in April.
These thugs don’t make UGA look any better, but Coach Richt certainly does!

When we checked AJC blogs this morning half your columnist had started a blog wanting us to comment on DaRick and his fellow team mates assaulting patrons at one of their local bars.So we did. UGA fans can’t point fingers at anyone. The forty arrests of football and basketball players in the past three years, plus at least two DUI arrests of officials in the athletic department, are beyond outrageous. Clearly the coaches cannot control their players, especially Mark Richt. At most schools, heads would roll with those kind of numbers, but it doesn’t seem to bother anyone at UGA.
And that’s really scary. In any case, UGA fans are the last ones in the world who can point fingers at others.

Who cares what color the guys were. All this can be solved with a strait hand set of rules that the SEC puts forth., not the schools. All criminal activity needs to go through Slives office period. If they are found guilty they should no longer have the priveledge to play in the SEC. If they are found innocent, and are in good standings with the academic side of the house then all should be forgiven but with a warning. If they are academically behind the eightball they should have been in the library not the bar. Punishment should come from the academic side of the house which the athletic dept. would have too abide by.

Where was this lecture when others made fun of UGA’s misfortune? I think Georgia folks understand your point better than you think. It’s just that given the way Da’ Rick the Convict jilted the Dawgs, poking fun at the guy is just too irresistable. Sure the kid was free to sign with anyone of his choosing, but the classless way in which he conducted his recruiting switch reinforces the notion of what goes around comes around. The real problem here is that too many college towns, and this is especially true in Athens, make underage drinking too easy. I don’t know for sure whether alcohol was involved in this incident but perhaps it’s time to make even underage entry into a bar illegal. Personally I don’t understand why any athlete, underage or not, needs to be in a bar. Call me idealistic but shouldn’t they be trying to maintain their bodies at peak physical condition? Another angle here might be to also weigh the student athlete’s character more heavily. Too many times college coaches, and again this is especially true at Georgia, take too many chances with athletes because of their athletic skill and the feeling that they can rescue a kid from himself. I’m not saying that transformations aren’t possible but most of the time a punk is a punk and will remain a punk. And if the evidence shows that Da’Rick was involved in the assault on the off-duty cop, he’s going to be a punk with a lot of legal problems. Unfortunately he wouldn’t be the first promising athlete too full of himself to wind up in jail. It may be a tough pill to swallow but he’s the one who ordered the medicine. And to many of us in the Dawg Nation, it’s more than a little amusing.

That’s why they didn’t stay on top of him like they did the other recruits. I don’t think it really mattered to MR if he left or not. The public gives these kids the “big head” and they feel invincible. But I guess that kind of applies to older folks too doesn’t it… like 40-year-old ADs.

there is something badly wrong when 7-10 young men jump one guy that are supose to be college students which seems to say they would be above this sort of behavior. i must say that i was taken aback on signing day to see rogers making a sign with his hands and fingers which i wondered then denoted trouble. We had a terrible tragedy in our town when this sort of thing happened. this type of thing must be purged much like the NBA is trying to do.

As unfortunate as it is, people are arrested for DUI daily, nightly, weekly, etc. Even more people get away with it.
It’s not everyday that a schools number one recruit beats the sh*t out of an officer of the law. That’s the difference here. UGA fans should be wary as we so soon forget Damon Evans, but this may at least get the spotlight off us.

Boys…..just settle down here. I live in Knoxville and the whole story is far from being told. A friend of mine works for the Knox County Sheriff’s Dept. and gave me some inside info. Rogers was caught up in the middle of trying to break-up a fight. The off-duty cop, who had been drinking, got involved and thats when things got out of hand. Word is Miles will be gone before Monday but Rogers will get a 1-2 game suspension.

Rarely does it happen that a school’s #1 flip flop and #1 recruit beats the hell out of a cop. That’s the difference here.
In my mind, both are despicable offenses and would warrant jail time and getting thrown out of school. Luckily Da’Rick has Nance Nash as a teammate for his dad’s bail money. If he were at UGA he’d still be in jail.

Myles was released this afternoon now they had time to get a new story straight since this is how it goes in Knoxville.
KNOXVILLE – A brawl that led to the arrests of two University of Tennessee football players began when “an unknown patron” of a Cumberland Avenue bar attacked freshman defensive tackle Montori Hughes “without provocation,” Hughes’ attorney said this afternoon.
Gregory P. Isaacs, who was retained today to represent Hughes, said that his client hasn’t been interviewed or charged by law enforcement in connection with the fight that sent two people to a hospital, including an off-duty Knoxville police officer.
“Our investigation has revealed that the UT football players did not start the altercation at the establishment,” Isaacs said. “Importantly, Montori Hughes was assaulted by an unknown patron for no apparent reason, which was the catalyst of the altercation.”
Isaacs said he didn’t believe that any criminal charges will be filed against Hughes, 19. He also said that his firm’s investigation “revealed there is no surveillance video existing of the events that transpired.”
Tonight, coach Derek Dooley announced he was dismissing sophomore safety Darren Myles from the program. Dooley also indefinitely suspended sophomore defensive tackle Marlon Walls and sophomore linebacker Greg King.
The injured officer, Robert Capouellez, has been moved to a private room at the University of Tennessee Medical Center and is listed in stable condition, according to DeBusk.
DeBusk also identified a man who was assaulted inside the bar as Gary Russell, 20. Russell was treated and released from UT Medical Center, according to a spokesman.
It’s unclear if Russell is the “unknown patron” that Hughes’ attorney said started the fight.
The two arrested players were released from jail this morning after posting bonds.
According to UT Police Department reports, players John Brown, 22; Matthew Milton, 18; Denarious Moore, 21; Darren Myles Jr., 19; and Da’Rick Rogers, 19, were identified as those involved in beating the off-duty Knoxville Police Department officer.
A UTPD report filed shortly after the incident said that assault charges were pending against Milton, but DeBusk said this afternoon that it appears Milton won’t be charged.
Moore is a senior wide receiver out of Tatum, Texas. Hughes is a sophomore defensive tackle out of Murfreesboro.
Brown is a junior-college transfer who was expected to provide some depth for the defensive line. The 6-2, 285-pounder out of Northeast Mississippi Community College originally signed with Florida but had various health concerns that helped prompt his transfer away from the Gators.
Rogers is a 6-foot-3, 205 pound receiver out of Georgia. He is a five-star wide receiver from Calhoun (Ga.) High School. He was widely considered the crown jewel of football coach Derek Dooley’s first recruiting class with the Vols last spring after Dooley pried him away from Georgia.
Rogers was ranked the top recruit in the talent-rich state and among the top 100 prospects in the country. He wasn’t an early-enrollee and missed spring practice, but after showing up last month for summer school he was expected to contribute right away in the UT passing game thanks to his blend of size and speed.
Like Rogers, Milton is another true freshman UT could use immediately at wide receiver to bolster the passing attack. The tall, 6-5 target had an impressive spring after enrolling in school early and showed an ability to make plays through the air despite some raw talent out of Mascoutah (Ill.) High School.
None of the players has been charged in connection with beating officer Robert Capouellez, who was found unconscious about 1:50 a.m. with a head wound in the street outside the Bar Knoxville, 1820 Cumberland Ave.
Another man, identified in records as Jerran Talley, 19, of Athens, allegedly was with the group involved in the beating. Talley is not a UT student and has not been charged.
Capouellez was a customer in the bar who apparently tried to help quell the disturbance as bouncers led the disruptive crowd from the bar.
“It appears he was a patron, not in uniform and off duty,” DeBusk said.
Capouellez was undergoing treatment at the University of Tennessee for a head wound, DeBusk said. The 24-year-old officer has been with KPD since August 2008.
A UT Medical Center spokesman said Capouellez was in stable condition in the emergency room.
Police have charged UT freshman Rogers with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, DeBusk said.
Myles, a sophomore, was charged with assault, resisting arrest and evading arrest, records show. He was released after posing a $2,000 bond.
Myles is accused of assaulting UT Police Department Officer Brian Greenlee after the officer arrived at 2:04 a.m. to help Capouellez.
Greenlee’s affidavit states he was directed by bar bouncers to a group of people “involved in a fight with the officer.” Greenlee said after he identified himself as an officer to the group, Myles “fled from me on foot southbound towards Lake Avenue,” the records state.
Greenlee caught up with Myles on Lake Avenue and tried to arrest him, records show.
“The defendant (Myles) slipped out of my grip and struck me in the face on my left side,” Greenlee wrote. Myles continued to resist, the officer noted, and ran toward Cumberland Avenue.
According to UTPD records, Greenlee was trying to put Myles in a restraint hold for handcuffing when Myles’ continued resistance led him to smash his elbow into the officer’s face just below his left eye. Greenlee did not require medical treatment.
UTPD Officer Christopher McCann stated in a report that he joined the hunt for the running Myles, who was found hiding under a parked BMW behind the old Days Inn building. When ordered to come out, Myles did but ran toward Lake Avenue.
McCann and KPD Sgt. Jason Keck continued the foot chase as Myles ran behind the Howard Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy building and then by Greve Hall and Henson Hall. The officers found Myles hiding in bushes at Henson Hall, McCann wrote.
Myles had an encounter in April with Knoxville police just hours after the Orange and White game. He was charged with public intoxication, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after a 2:29 a.m. incident at Sobu, 6213 Kingston Pike. Club bouncers had removed Myles from the business, but he continued causing problems in the parking lot.
Myles was riding on the hood of a car when officers arrived, police said. Officers said he fought them when he was arrested, but no officers were injured. Myles is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 12 on those charges.
Knoxville police spokesman DeBusk said the brawl began when the beaten patron was involved in an altercation with another customer “when several additional patrons jumped into the fight.”
“Employees of the bar intervened and pushed the fight outside onto the sidewalk. Officer Capouellez intervened in an attempt to stop the fight when he was attacked.
“According to witnesses, the officer was hit in the head and knocked to the ground. Once on the ground the suspect kicked the officer several times before fleeing the scene. Six individuals were identified as potential suspects. These individuals were located and detained for questioning.”
DeBusk said “there could be additional charges as the investigation continues.”
DeBusk said police alerted Dooley, who is out of town, of the incident this morning.

I mean it has honestly changed about two times since 2am this morning when 18 yr old UT players were treated like celebrities and allowed VIP access into a bar witnesses claimed they looked drunk when they got there and now some cop is in ICU unconcious. Regardless of who started it which before by the owner the cop stepped into to stop the fight but was off duty now a different story emerges. But the lawyer Dooley will get him off I am sure and made Myles the sacrificial lamb his crap was cleared out at 5pm today.

There was a whole lot of UT fan celebrating with the signing of Dah Rick Rogers, after UT was simply humiliated by Lame Kiffen on the USA college sports stage. They acted like UGA lost the best wide out in the entire history of college football, when we had on campus already Rontavious, AJ, Marlon Brown and Tavarres King and israel Troupe and Chris Durden, not to mention the bevy of EXCELLENT Tight Ends. UGA gets is share of morons for all kinds of idiocy and some are actual criminal acts like with Montrez Robinson. This goes on all over the NCAA at Oregon, elsewhere. Please do not act like UGa is alone in this inner city thuggery stuff. These two kids attended UT.
UT for years and years has had its issues and the Rogers/Myles thing makes me giggle. I will celebrate and hold my finger pointing to a minimum and look forward to playing them this fall.

I like Chip, but I’d appreciate a little more objectivety from him and Tim. I feel it’s a sports writers job to be objective, like how you and Jeff Schultz are instead of just being a glorified mouth piece for the UGA athletic department. I appreciate that Chip and Tim aren’t like Terence Moore who clearly had a vendetta against everything UGA; but these puff pieces about how great Mark Richt is when he clearly hasn’t been doing a great job last 2 years irritates me. Report the facts, worts and all! The media’s job is to hold those in higher profile jobs accountable (which is what you did with Damon Evans and I appreciate it Mark). When things are going great lets praise the team and everyone involved in their success. And when things aren’t going well lets hold them accountable. This is as true for UGA as it is for Tech, Florida, or UT. I don’t think that’s too much to ask.

There really is nothing in this scenario to laugh about nor do I think it reasonable to bring up the issue for ridicule by writing about it as if it had something to do with recruiting. We know that recruits & players on scholarship get arrested but do they get arrested at a greater % than the general public of the same age or vs the student body at any particular college. I have never seen a study on this which would seem a natural for anybody writing about student-athletics in today’s society. Is it an intelligence thing I mean do the student athletics at Harvard, Yale, Stanford & Duke get arrested at the same rate as those at UT, UGA or USC? Is it a southern thing? Compare the numbers for the SEC vs the Big Ten for example. Or could it be the rates are the same all round it’s just a society problem In that case, let’s turn to the parents because as all of us know when we were at age 18, 19, or 20 we didn’t want to get into trouble because we didn’t want to embarrass ourselves &/or our parents.

The problem is much simpler than most are willing to admit.
IF a major institution such as UGA, Ten, USC etc are willing to lower their standards to sign an athelete to play football, baseball, or any other sport solely to “MAKE MONEY” and not to educate and further advance that individuals intellect, that institution should expect no less than we have observed here.
Schools such as UGA, Ten, USC are soliciting “THUGS, CRIMINALS, TRASH” to play football at their school for the sole purpose of making money. Not to educate or further advance those individuals. It is completely selfish and for the MONEY!
This has not only effected the colleges, it has also effected our governement!

Pi$$, so I suppose you’re saying that what the ‘kids’ did to an officer to the extent of putting him in the hospital is merely mob behavior? Okay, I got it. Now we should just give them a stern penalty of maybe a 3-games suspension, right? You are one piece of work, Pi$$. Justify any act from your warped point of view. Example: the Nazi soldiers were only following orders when exterminating millions of innocent civilians so it wasn’t their fault…..right? Schools such as UGA, Ten, USC are soliciting “THUGS, CRIMINALS, TRASH” to play football at their school for the sole purpose of making money. Not to educate or further advance those individuals. It is completely selfish and for the MONEY!
You’re entirely correct. UGA (Mark Richt) knows that most of the players they recruit are illiterate thugs, but they simply don’t care, it’s win at all costs.
UGA has been doing this for decades, and it’s sickening.

Bradley are you that desperate for material. At every major program in CFB someone does something stupid. What at all does this at all have to do with UGAs program. UGA is not UT’s only rivalry. Is the ony thing the media can do is stir up hatred. So I guess all the UT fans will continue to raise hell about Evans. This is sports, when these athletes get in trouble, their lives are on the line. Fans all over the country can cheer for the other team’s players to have something bad happen to them, but if you do you are a borderline phsychopath. This tops your Lebron article. It extends not only to UGA. The NCAA should establish rules minimizing this crap!
If it is not established by the NCAA, other schools will simply recruite these THUGS to increase their income. Thre has to be control across the board.
The most important aspect that has been lost is that these are suppose to be “Student Atheletes” competing at a student level to furthet their development and educational needs to be a quality citizen.
The folks arrested from Ten, UGA, USC etc are NOT those students we are looking for!!

Bradley get this straight ok….Dawg fans are not reveling in the fact that a Vol was arrested….its because of what DR did to CMR and staff at the last minute. Then making up stories, he (threw his good friend Nance) has trashed the coaching staff.
So get the facts straight…its not about the transgression of a Vol. Its about being stabbed in the back and having what goes around actually come around to bite DR in the butt. He is deserving of the ridicule and UGA fans laughing at his expense. He created the controversy…and from what he has said on his Facebook idiot’s page…he was/is far from an upstanding citizen before this. If he beat up an off duty policeman, he has far more problems to worry about than what UGA fans feel anyway.
So lay off of us…its not “glasshouse” situation or anywhere close to it! You sound more worried about our response than what these idiots did. Thats disgusting. Sorry to disappoint you but we’re not the story…DR and his drinking buddies are.

And it took all but 12 hours for karma to set in again. I wrote after the damon evans arrest that there is a major problem at uga for alcohol abuse among not just the student body but also the employees as far up as evans. Many said prove it. Who else. Doesn’t several arrests each month prove it? Or will you continue to live in denial. I feel sorry for Mark Richt having to baby sit so many players who have drinking problems. It’s like having 10 Lindsay Lohan’s on your team. This doesn’t even touch the student body nor the instructors and employees at Uga. Michael Adams continues to ignore the problem. No one takes responsibility for what has become an epidemic in Athens. Maybe it will take people dying, like what happened in Atlanta recently, for something to happen and change the culture there. Or perhaps they enjoy their debauchery. It will eventually end in more chaos and CMR should just leave before the disease takes over his life.

This is sooooo funny, how some of you Einstein’s associate what these football players are doing to them being young college kids. That’s PATHETIC, these are thugs, period….. They are recruited for their prowess on the football field. UGA and UT have the most, especially UGA, because their leaders are DEVOID of any morality…… Yes, Mark Richt is the biggest HYPOCRITE of the bunch. He has proven to have NO discipline, and he holds very few of his players accountable, except when he is forced by other people. CMR continues to lead not by example, but by constantly making excuses for his players actions. This is why football at UGA is in a state of Flux and continues to deteriorate. So be it, UGA has always been a football factory and will continue to be a football factory!

KeithB comments that college kids do college kid stuff. The facts are that for the past year or two schools with the exception of Tennessee and Georgia have controlled this. Is it because they are the two weakest academic schools in the weakest academic conference?
Also it is obvious that Georgia people refer to ‘fans’ and not ‘alumni’ because these people could not have attended a single day of college, even at Georgia.

Mark- There is nothing amusing about the entire incident. There is nothing amusing about revenge. Your article was prophetic with the arrest overnight of two UGA players for escalating a minor traffic incident into an arrest for some of the same transgressions that DaRick had.
But the fan base (me included) are riled at DaRick for lack of wisdom for being used by another party to get his son a scholarship at a rival school and using the UGA team and fan base as foils. The anger that evokes comes from a genuine pride of the University sans the athletic teams and with the University’s pride to attract the best, no matter what endeavor. Many of the alums have great pride in other entities of our school such as Business, Jounalism and Science Schools. Professional aspects of those Schools such as Pharmacy, Veterinarian and even the Peabody Awards for your area of endeavor are just a few of those numerous sources of pride. Sports carry our label and source of pride as well to a larger venue. When someone leads this great University on a merry chase while fronting excellence, but have mundane character issues that affect so many alums, fans, and followers with a “put-down” such as what DaRick did callously, we all feel denigrated. That feeling comes from emphasizing with him during his pledge period and feeling protective of him as a future member of our great University that could bestow pride of accomplishment on him as well as his reciprocation. Pride in our present recruits and team members is sullied as well. We feel our teams are family with this student body no matter the endeavor. They have the unique ability to impart honor on the University as well as themselves and distinguish team and individuals from other student body members.
With that honor goes trust and we have found DaRick untrustworthy. Some of us react to this in a vengeful manner ; some of us react out of sorrow for allowing him to include himself in our family only to leave us feeling used ; some of us act sorrowful for him not to see the greatness of this institution and what we can do for his life ; some say “Good Luck” to you in whatever you think or have been convinced you want that you felt we could not provide. I feel all of these emotions as I also think many of the alums and fans feel. Like a jilted bride we will all get over it. But forgiving him his shortcomings of not recognizing this great and rightly prideful school of endeavor after being one of us for so long is difficult for many.

Please don’t even equate an King’s underage drinking with the 7-10 UT football players in the bar. Guess they were all having a soda.
Jackson’s motor vehicle charge much more serious. Still not up to putting one policeman in the hospital and the other to the Emergency room.
Interesting that Derek Dooley expelled his offender that had previous similar charges pending a court date; he knew he’s not going to be free to play football. However, he temporarily suspends 2 lesser players, but doesn’t pass ANY punishment on the other player identified as beating on the officer and arrested (#1 recruit). You think they weren’t drinking? However, when the other charges are aggravated assault, they don’t mention underage drinking as much.
No excuses for any of them; just a little amusing how the coverage and punishments play out.

OLEDAWG: very, very well written. I have been a GT fan my entire life, but have always respected UGA the institution and its athletics program. It has some of the best academic programs in the nation, and the excellence of the all-around athletics program speaks for itself. I feel the same way about my school, Georgia Tech. Our state is blessed to have two of the premier institutions of higher learning in the country.
With all that said, I admittedly had to chuckle a little when I saw the headline about the arrests of the two Dawg players this morning, more about the timing and all the flak that UGA fans–and others as well–tossed at the Vols. However, no school is immune from such incidents, some just more than others it seems.
As for Coach Mark Richt, I still think he is a fine man and outstanding coach. Should he be more “aggressive” in punishment of his players when laws are broken and extremely poor behavior. I think so. Will the punishments that he hands out be more severe? I think it should, especially after all that has transpired in the last couple of weeks. He needs to do something more punitive than a 1-game suspension in situations like. The point needs to be driven home. And I emphasize that situations like this should be recognized at ALL school. An alcohol/drug awareness program and tough penalties for violations should be in place at ALL schools.
I absolutely love college sports, especially football and basketball, but incidents like this, and even more so the “one-and-done” stuff in basketball bother me greatly. And, Tech, is among the nation’s leaders in recruiting tarnishing the term, “student-athlete” when it comes to is recruitment in basketball.
Sorry to ramble. I love college sports. I am proud of both Georgia Tech and Georgia for many things, but I think both of them need to do a better job of recruiting the student as well as the athlete and the person as well as the star.

Man Richt has got to get control over his players. I know all schools have problems but this has gotten far from funny and into the sad and disturbing area. I guess the bench will be void for the big bad La. Laff game when Richt should make an example and suspend somebody for more than one game against mediocre opposition. UGA fans wether you want to face it or not there is a real problem when this many players are getting in trouble for alcohol related incidents. Ether they have no respect for Richt and the UGA program, don’t care, or what looks to be the more obvious no fear that anything will happen to them if they do break the rules.

Fishawk,
Putting people in ICU is not a youthfull mistake. I seriously hope you are no looking at these two situations as the same thing. Let’s say 7-10 police officers beat a Tenn football player so bad it put him in ICU. It would be national news and people would be screaming at the top of your lungs. I grant you the drinking and driving from UGA is SERIOUS but not the same. These Tenn players are not looking at poss 30 day charges it could be life sentences depending on the medical outcome.

Greg,
I am a huge GT fan and I am not trying to knock UGA on this one I’m just pointing out facts. I agree that these kids are going to drink and party no matter where they go and yes it’s easier to get caught in a small populace like Athens compared to Atlanta, but I have to ask if Richt has called a team meeting and told these kids to knock it off or suffer certain consequences. If you are trying to build a dream team I don’t imagine numerous offseason arrests are the way to go about it and you have to wonder how much public humilation Richt is going to let these kids bring on the school.

Two more UGA athletes are arrested for alcohol related offense. These young men should be be suspended for a year, loss of the year, or kicked off of the team. This behaviour has become all to common, stupidity apparently resides on every campus. 0 tolerance and stiff penalty should be the order of the day.

Icedawg,
Other programs around the sec don’t seem to have the problems Georgia and UT have. LSU and Bama have each had 1 player arrested in the past year and AU has had 1 or 2 players arrested and that’s it. Florida has had some issues and had one player arrested a couple months ago but even then its been relatively quiet in Gainesville. You guys and UT are simply thug programs. It is what it is.

Underage drinking is a serious problem on all college campuses and it extends well beyond athletes. Coaches should impose stiff consequences when players are convicted of alcohol-related offenses, but let’s not pretend this is a problem isolated to just athletes or just to a few schools.
Here are some statistics from MADD and the NIAAA:
http://www.madd.org/docs/college%20statistics.pdf
http://www.collegedrinkingprevention.gov/statssummaries/snapshot.aspx
The NCAA limits alcohol ads during NCAA telecasts, but they could make a stronger statement by eliminating them altogether.

I certainly think icedawg may be on to something. Same penalties across the board for every school (start with the SEC and if it works expand). This penalty for underage drinking, another for DUI, another for beating up a policeman…you get the idea.
Suppose some schools would not arrest their kids as quickly as others; some would lessen the charges while others would not; and as Silly points out, some towns are smaller and kids are more likely to fly under the radar in larger cities which may give them a recruiting advantage. Lots of complexities, but SOMETHING needs to be done across the country. Otherwise, go back to freshman ineligible and make them prove themselves in the classroom and society before they ever play.
Too many of these kids think they are above the law and rules. It is emulating their pro heroes who are paid way, way beyond their contribution to society and are thuggish. Stiffer, zero tolerance should be mandated by our conference. They reflect badly on the majority of student-athletes who will never play beyond college and are out there working their tails off for pride and their beloved university.

OleJacket- Thanks for the words. I was embarrassed by mistyping “empathize”, but we all understand in the heat of communicating and self-editing that some slip by.
Your words were most important for recognizing the emotions of our school pride. I am happy to have corrected some misunderstandings of your University on these pages as well. Guess the old farts are ambivalent in their admiration/hate psyches brought on by great competition through the years. I sometimes even admit that I have a nephew who graduated from your fine institution and is a rabid old gold fan. Our ambivalence is nothing compared to his since his brother-in-law played for UGA and was on the team for 4 yrs. During that period he attended more UGA games than I did.
I go back to the Wally Butts/ Bobby Dodd era and many times found myself siding with Dodd. I always viewed him as a coach of great character. That still didn’t curtail the feelings of “Good Old-Fashioned Hate” expressed by alums of both schools. We understand that expression of admiration/dislike perhaps better than some due to the wisening toll of the years.
Placing into perspective what we are viewing today with our recruits; it hasn’t changed in 50 yrs, it just gets more light shined on it. Using an expression from my vocation:
“Big fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite ‘em,
and little fleas have littler fleas and so adinfinitum.”
So it goes with our football players today. Some have fleas and issues that trump those fleas, but all-in-all they are all just human. The large stage and brighter lights are the only differences from the rest of the student body. And we always have our rivals and AJC upon ours and their backs to “bite ‘em”….and so adinfinitum.

Rest of the sec,
Are you kidding me??? Quiet in Gainesville. Man, don’t you keep up?
Other venues have the same problems. Perhaps the community isn’t as aggressive or they don’t have the AJC scouring the arrest websites. If you have a brain, you know with the scrutiny these players go through in being recruited by UGA that we get kids at least as well-behaved as any other SEC school.

No one ever said we were unique.
No one ever said we were immune.
Uga is no different than ANY other university when it comes to students/student-athletes getting into trouble every now and then.
But anyone who says we have more kids arrested than any other school or that our athletes commit more criminal acts than any other group is just plain lying.
All colleges are full of students, away from home and away from mommie and daddy for the first time.
This means they can now party and raise hell without parents looking over their shoulders.
Many feel they have to party to fit in.
Partying usually involves drinking alcohol. Students drink alcohol, usually to excess, and get drunk.
Drunken behaviour leads to poor judgement.
Poor judgement leads to run-ins with law enforcement personnel.
You know the rest.
But UGA doesn’t do this any more than any other school, except maybe BYU:)
And those of us that support them, cheer for them and blog about them, know all these things to be true.
Mark, sometimes you can be a real tool !

This problem goes way beyond athletics. Go to your mall today and sit and watch wherever you may be. Many (not all) young people have an “in your face” attitude based on a culture of entitlements. But you bleeding heart liberals make excuses for them. Lawbreakers are given a slap on the wrist and not even punished. They are the same ones that appear in courts over and over until they do something terrible. Then their family is outraged that somebody didn’t do something! They put a Sunday school picture of him in the paper and tell what a devout, law-abiding citizen he is.
Our judicial system won’t let us send a message here. But…with college athletics and as Derek Dooley said “the privilege of playing”, we could do something about these student athletes.

OleJacket- Correction on Richt and his discipline. You may have not noticed the DISMISSAL of three players since May for some of the same incidents that occurred in Knoxville. Most were l descended from Anglo-Saxon immigrants.
What would be wrong with comparable transgressions punishments by category and offense across the board in college athletics? It’s a good idea except it would have to include the rest of the student body and Student Code of Conduct. If it had applied to me in my rambunctious years of undergraduate tomfoolery, I would never have completed a degree.

To all the Tech-sters that are about to turn the inside of their jeans into blue dresses…You don’t really think your little campus is immune to alcohol-related problems involving athletes, do you?
They just probably don’t get as much air time, or as many by-lines or acknowledgment of any sort, really…because when it comes to your local media outlets, well…they just don’t care.
It’s more interesting to write about someone else’s misfortune and poke fun about it than to face the truth about yourself. Boring and inept just isn’t headline worthy, is it?
No problem. We’re big enough to take it.
I mean, seriously, we understand. You have to have some way to feel superior, stroke your egos and throw attention away from the fact that you, that is, your team just…

Part of the problem was pinpointed in the last paragraph of an article in the Atlanta paper. The bar owner’s wife was quoted as saying, “The Vols players are treated like VIP’s here.” Too many people treat these young adults as VIP’s because they play college ball. The NCAA and the schools are to blame. One UGA player was just arrested for DUI and other charges driving a Chevy Avalanche. He is 20 years old. I seriously doubt his family is buying that car. Alumni funds? Where is the NCAA?
