LeBron goes from Cleveland to Miami, from hero to villain

In an hour of unbelievably overcooked live TV, LeBron James went from being the nice guy you hoped would someday win a championship to the schemer you hope never does. He went from being John Elway to being A-Rod, from hero to villain.

It must have seemed a good idea at the time: LeBron and his “team” went to ESPN and pitched an one-hour special, and the Worldwide Leader does as the Worldwide Leader invariably does — it turned a news story into a circus. It offered up Stuart Scott, who said “two-time MVP” so often in the space of 10 minutes you wanted to shout: “Bill Russell was a five-time MVP, and he never needed a one-hour special to remind us!”

Bill Russell also won 11 titles, and he never had to cherry-pick his team. Neither did Michael Jordan, who took six, or Magic Johnson, who won five, or Kobe Bryant, who has five, or Tim Duncan, who has four. Even if LeBron does win a championship with the Miami Heat — and there’s no guarantee he will — it won’t be seen as a great player lifting a team; it will be seen as a bunch of glitzy free agents banding together just to burnish their respective images.

The Heat won’t be seen as the Celtics, where three guys who had never won big came together near the end of the careers to enhance one another. They’ll be viewed as the Yankees, where the operative word is always overkill. LeBron James just told us that, for all his exterior bravado, he didn’t trust himself to be the linchpin of a champion. He needs Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Can Carmelo Anthony be far behind?

We the people are funny. We like our stars, but we don’t like sure things. It will be no news when Miami wins, but it will be the lead story whenever it loses. And it won’t just be newsworthy when/if the Heat fails — it will be laugh-out-loud funny.

Had LeBron gone to the Knicks or the Bulls, had he stayed in Cleveland, we’d see him differently today. We’d see him as a superstar looking for a team he could make better, as opposed to one that might well have made do without him. A team needs both LeBron and D-Wade? The two brand names whose games most mirror one another? Why not bring Jordan out of retirement just to complete the set?

The wide receiver Chad Ochocinco, no stranger to hype, offered two sneering Tweets in response to the word circulating early Thursday that LeBron was indeed headed to Miami to ally himself with Wade and Chris Bosh. From C.O.:

“Nickname is KingJames. Kings lead with the help of an army (supporting cast on team) –  a lead dog doesn’t join superstars to make it easy.”

Also this:

“Kobe-Magic-Jordan-Bird all created legacies on their own teams. They didn’t join together to make winning a ring easy.”

We can argue that LeBron deserves credit for leaving money on the table. (The Cavs could have paid him more than any other team.) But money at this rarefied level is a given, and what’s a few million here or there? The trouble with being one of three — Miami Thrice! — is that LeBron will never be seen as a transcendent talent on the order of Jordan or Magic or Bird. He couldn’t take the guys around him and make them champs. He had to station himself next to D-Wade, who’s already a champ.

The Summer of LeBron figured to be strange, but it wound up being stranger than anyone could have dreamed. LeBron had the world at his feet, and he managed to alienate a goodly portion thereof. His ballyhooed “Decision” smacks of a calculated plan intent on world domination, and nobody likes a megalomaniac.

LeBron might well have outsmarted himself. A lot of folks who wouldn’t have minded if he won are now hoping he and the Miami Heat will lose. I know. I’m one of them.

Great article Mark – you nailed it. There are so many terrible storylines here – what he’s doing to his hometown, the manner in which he chose to subject Cleveland to this with a one hour special on national t.v., what this says about his drive as a champion, etc. As you stated, he just went from hero to villian. I enjoyed watching him play, and in the matter of one ESPN special, i find myself despising him.

The element of this not getting a lot of discussion is the negative impact this will have on the NBA. As you stated, people don’t want to watch if they already know the storyline. This league already had a lack of parity before, and that problem just increased tenfold. As a Hawks fan, why do i even want to bother watching the NBA anymore if i know my team doesn’t have a chance due to 3 superstars colluding to build an empire? Why should GM’s even bother to try and build teams anymore if this can happen? Unless you live in Miami, this is terrible for the game, and the NBA will suffer for it.

lebron was overrated BEFORE he took his first nba dribble. he was forced on us by david sterns marketing crew, and people lapped it up. he can play, dont get me wrong, but his superstar status was GIVEN to him. WHY pick on him now??? he was given the king status by the media and fans without earning it. what he did was put more pressure on himself to win now. when the heat lose, like you said bradley, people are not gonna let him forget it.

I had always liked LeBron until he quit on the Cavs in the last 3 games of the Celtics series. I’ve never seen anything like it, it looked like a fix. And now he goes to the Heat. Maybe he’s not up to being the man and wants to play second banana to Wade. After this ESPN fiasco tonight I think he’s made himself the most hated player in the NBA.

You think these guys would want a better chance at winning? : Barkley, Malone, Ewing, Reggie Miller. Sometimes in life you have to take risks or else you’ll regret the rest of your life. Ask Garnett when he was in Minnesota. You think he regrets leaving? I don’t think so.

Lebron is like a Magic Johnson. He will be fine getting 15 assists a night if necessary. Staying in Cleveland for loyalty is the dumbest thing I ever heard. Would you stay at the same company for loyalty when you know you might reach greater heights somewhere else? Plus, he had fun playing with Wade and Bosh, so, it’s like he’s teaming with his “boys” to try to win it. Nothing wrong with that.

I agree with every word. Sure it was his choice…but a bad one that will haunt him for years to come. You can’t “buy” a championship team. Wade is reckless and injury prone…Bosh is fragile too. I can’t wait for them to fail over and over again. I also view Wade (used to be my favorite) as a first class chump too. Bosh is just Bosh without the ugly butt braids…doesn’t have the swag, talent and marquee value of the other two. Man I feel sorry for Le ding-dong when they play in Cleveland. He’ll need a suit of armor to deflect all the things that will be thrown at him. Some sport fans are probably mad enough to do bodily harm to him. He is a man on an island with a lot fewer friends. I don’t have an issue with LeBron going to Miami. I do have an issue with him quitting on his team in the last 3 games of a playoff series and suggesting (by leaving) that he couldn’t win a championship in Cleveland after Cavs management made every move they could to strengthen the team while he was there. I have an issue with him referring to himself in the 3rd person and being self indulgent enough to pitch a one hour special to ESPN to hype his announcement. And I have an issue with the suggestion that a player’s greatness is only defined by how many NBA championships he wins. Charles Barkley, John Stockton, Karl Malone and Elgin Baylor never won a championship but that doesn’t mean they’re not among the all-time greats.

farley

This is the dumbest article that I have read on this subject. The writer sounds like a disgruntled fan who is angry that the team he roots for isn’t getting Lebron. There are no givens in the NBA it is a long season full of injuries and no team can claim victory at the start, nor can any sports writer. Second everyone knows that you need a trifecta to win the big one and a solid bench. Third Lebron never experienced anything outside Cleveland and he is when all is said and done just a young man who wants what young men want, fun,sun and success. Finally Lebron can do a lot of good in a state that has the highest unemployment rate in the Union by his presence there. You need to grow up and not be so presumptuous.

Tank

Let’s hold off on the “he left money on the table” part for a second for several reasons. His salary in Miami will not be subject to state tax. His endorsement money will not be subject to state tax now that he’s a Florida resident . His marketability as being part of a readymade winner should bring in more money. No ONE “left $$$ on the table” or at least not to the level it’s being made out to be. If it was about “winning”, then go play with Rose/Boozer/Noah etc and be an alpha dog…not a lapdog.

@cheshire

Lebron wants to win. Jordan had a top 50 greatest player in Pippen, Rodman was a beast, great role players, Phil Jackson….Lakers had Shaq, Kobe, Fisher, Odom, …. Spurs had Duncan, Parker,Manu. I just don’t see how Cleveland tried to help Lebron out. I admire him going after his dream. He doesn’t have to owe anyone anything. He tried for seven years, and it didn’t work. . He tried. But failed. And the team didn’t have the supporting cast.

But guess what? If Kobe didn’t average 30 points against the Thunder, he would of lost without Gasol and his cast. Lebron gets killed, but Kobe’s faults are overlooked even though he had a disaster 1st round and terrible game 7. Lebron needs help. No one player can do it alone. It has been proven in history. Even Hakeem had Robert Horry, Clyde Drexler, and Kenny Smith for clutch shots.

There is a difference between having an “off game” and having a”terrible game”. Kobe had an off game in game 7( and by off, he didn’t score his usual 30 points). But he made clutch shots at the end of the game( particularly at the free throw line) to seal the deal for his team.

Now Miami has 3 players who demand the ball – that should be interesting. This is not Boston all over again. Garnett, Pierce and Allen were totally different types of players who filled their role.

Miami will have 2, Wade and James, who are accustomed to dominating the ball and while I agree LeBron has the talent to play his role – will he? Bosh is not a dominant rebounder or defender but certainly an outstanding talent, so the question remains will they be able to play together.

The Olympic team was only together for a short period, not the grind of a 100+ game NBA season so I am sure the 3 had fun then. Will they have fun traveling and facing the grind? Will they revert to their more comfortable styles if the going is tough? No one knows and only time will tell.

Even the “Miami 3″ will not be able to take the team to the finals without role players willing to subvert their talents to the M-3.

Mark Bradley’s reference to the Yankees may be the best analogy. The Yanks went 6 or 7 years without playing in a World Series even though the team had the highest payroll, or one of the highest, in baseball.

I feel for Lebron, I was in a similar situation a couple years ago and made the same move. I was working at K-Mart in the Sporting Goods section and Wal-Mart was courting my services. When I left, I vividly remember some check-out boys burning my name-tag next to the blue light special cart. Sometimes you got to reach for the stars, I don’t regret my decision and neither will Lebron.

LaBron let millions of good people in Ohio down tonight. He should not be bashed for wanting to win, but he is clearly not the leader he thinks he is. True leaders have people who want to follow them, and D Wade stepped up and recruited LaBron like a leader of a team should. I am not a fan of D Wade, but I will say that he “manned up” and did what he felt was best for his team, and in the process, he picked up a subject in “King James”.

I think it was wrong how it was done. Cleveland should have known that a special show on his decision was not going to be “I’m rseigning with the cavaliers”
Maybe the Cavs could not afford other free agents because Lebron was maxing out his salary there but its funny how he is taking a cut to go to the Heat. Did he put that on the table to the Cavs to take less to attract a high caliber free agent?

This makes the Joe Johnson contract look even worse. I think this knocks the Hawks out of a top 4 spot in the East – Heat, Magic, Celtics, Bulls. Joe Johnson cared more about money than winning unlike LeBron James, Chris Bosh & D-Wade. If Joe Johnson wanted to win he would have left Atlanta and joined The Chicago Bulls and played with Derrick Rose, Carlos Boozer & Joakim Noah but him staying in Atlanta he’s not going to win a championship.

Free agency is a blessing to players, but a curse upon the game. How would you like to be a Knicks or Nets fan right now? They’ve spent years, purposefully tanking it for this off season. Both missed out on the James sweepstakes. Yes, the Knicks did get Amare’. But, David Lee is unsigned and will likely leave. They gave away Nate Robinson to the C’s last season. And, without some serious upgrades to the roster, Madison Square Garden will continue to watch its team lose… miserably.

As far as cherry picking a championship… good luck with that. He did his time in Cleveland, He gave them 7 years and played hard. No one in America stays in crappy jobs in bad weather if they don’t have to or want to. I find it hard to say that he HAS to play in Cleveland just because they drafted him. Mark you really should be ashamed of yourself. You know, I know and everyone who pays attention to sports knows THAT CLEVELAND IS A CURSED SPORTS CITY. Now why should LeBron James who wants to win a championship continue to cast his lot with a city that might as well have a black cat for it’s city’s logo? Art Modell figured this out and moved his franchise to Baltimore. Lenny Wilkins shook the dust off his feet. And now LeBron who has given them 7 yrs of his professional life has decided enough is enough.

There is only a narrow window of opportunity that any professional athlete has in his life to win a championship. And you have to sit back and honestly assess what you have to work with (Mo Williams, Jermaine Dye, that guy sleeping with his mama, Shaq??, and a new coach) and determine whether you can continue trying to make lemonade when there is no juice in the lemons. Now compare that to having Chris Bosh and D’Wade as teammates and this is a no brainer.

The hour long show was a bad idea — I mean nobody in the country is supposed to commandeer an hour of broadcast time but Obama (LOL). And to be honest this was as much a financial decision as it was a desire to win a championship. NO player in their right mind is going to chose to go to NY or NJ with their outrageous state income taxes unless there is a realistic chance for a championship (ala A-Rod). And he was not going to Chicago because he was just not going to play in the shadows of MJ. Miami was the right decision — warm sun, no state income taxes, and the chance to hoist that trophy.

Now why you hatin on that MB?

I hope this alliance of mercenary free agents isn’t a sign of things to come in pro sports. Things are already unbalanced enough everywhere as it is. My fear is that a few years down the road, Atlanta may see Jason Heyward or some other young superstar bolt town for more money/prestige that comes these days mostly from bigger markets. I really believe such events will eventually bring about the demise of entire franchises or even leagues in the not-too-distant future; no ability to compete means you’re losing money hand over fist in sports. Sports, as we’re so eloquently reminded on days like this, is a business. So businesses that lose money go under or disband; it’s the way of things. And if it happens to professional sports, we can all thank free agency for being the catalyst that ruined what was once a great thing in America.

Looks like he’s got the worst of both worlds.

Strange as this may sound, this move by LBJ actually makes sense to me. People keep saying he was the next Mike when he is closer to be the next Magic and to me that’s a BIG difference so hear me out. Mike was the type that didn’t make his teammates better, he threatened them into to it with his fierce will and killer instinct. LeBron is NOT that type of guy, never has been, and never will be. Mike could take scrubs to the mountaintop, Magic NEVER had to do that. Magic was a nice guy that would throw himself in front of a bus to give his teammate a free lane to the basket after he no-look passed the ball to them. This is what LeBron is and without above-average teammateSSS to do that with he can not and will not get to the mountaintop. Let me put it this way- you take Magic and put him with Jordan’s Bulls and they MIGHT win one title. You put Jordan with Magic’s Lakers and they still win five, maybe more. Magic was always credited with making his teammates better (a phrase you constantly hear LeBron using), but look at who he so called MADE better- James Worthy (superstar champ in college), Kareem (Hall of Famer before he got to L.A.), Michael Cooper (best defender in the NBA at that time, Magic didn’t teach Coop that), Byron Scott, and so on and so on, hardly anywhere near being the stiffs that Bill Cartwright, Craig Hodges, Cliff Levingston and the likes Jordan had to play with. That’s what LBJ had going on in Cleveland. Now he is trading those teammates in for some more high quality guys to play with like Magic played with. Face it, he didn’t have the fire to make those Cavs any better than he did and he knew it and knows everyone else WOULD know it if not for ESPN and every other media outlet donning him the next MJ or “King”. Now he won’t have to worry about that anymore, he has Wade to take that last shot and he can stick to doing what he does better and that facilitate and make teammates like Bosh better. As sweet as LeBron’s game is, just cause you pour syrup on ish, it won’t make em pancakes. Now in Miami he has a few better ingredients to work with and best of all none of them will be found in his mom’s cookie jar.

Now Miami has a stacked team of 3! Maybe LB is not the KING if he needs to surround himself with champs to win. But I will give him credit, he took a pay cut to try and win a ring. There is no loyalty in business, it’s just business. (We can all say the same about our jobs, unless we work for ourselves). With all the new time in Miami, maybe LB will get a jump shot trainer. Maybe Kobe and lend him half a jumper.

Here is a note to all that play LB:
When he has the ball play off of him about 3 feet. Make him beat you from the outside. Most likely he will still try and drive to the goal, that’s when someone should move over and take the charge.

This is what Mickael Pietrus of Orlando does when he sticks LB after realizing LB has little to no perimeter game. One dimensional player that can’t transform his game.

I say Lakers 3-peat again and Miami will not be in the East finals. (Celtics or Magic).

Most of you people on here probably have never played basketball. LeBron gave Cleveland 7 good years of trying to win a Title, and this is how you treat him by saying bad things. He don’t owe Cleveland anything. If anything, Cleveland owes him. Basketball is a business like any other sport. Trade are made every year to make their team better. He was a free agent like any free agent, you want to go to the team that can possible win a championship. Every team that wins a championship have great players around them. If he was coming to the hawks you wouldn’t be complaining Get over it.

Lebron’s decision almost seems like him crying like a baby saying “it’s not fair” that he could not win with his previous team the cavs, so he makes it easier for himself, and he is suppose to be a “king” haha, it’s like employees trying to gang up to beat the system, at least joe johnson stayed with his team even if he did go for more money he at least showed that it the willingness and drive to go the extra mile with your team to see the light at the end of tunnel, he might not win a championship but at least he tried with obstacles in the way, too bad we now have another team in our division that is hard to beat, can we ever win our division, now we have dwight, wade, lebron, and bosh in the southeast division, get ready for no one talking about hawks again for awhile but at least we aren’t cavs fans (for every high there is a low)

This 25 year old man is put under so much pressure, and he looked so unhappy and uncomfortable. HE CARES WHAT PEOPLE THINK. he has feelings too. Phil4Real,
What are you talking about? For the past two seasons the Cavaliers has had the best record in the league, during the regular season and were favored to win a championship this year. No one was saying LeBron needed help when he and his teammates were posing, dancing around, and all of the other pre game crap, but when they lose in the playoffs prematurely for the second year in a row, everybody gets blamed for it except LeBron. LeBron how about growing some balls and saying I will bring a championship to Cleveland. No he had to take the easy route, and for that reason he will never be equal to Kobe, Magic, Bird and don’t even think about Mike.

Well, I hope LeBron is happy… because he just tarnished his legacy; he’ll always be playing second fiddle, the Robin to the Batman (in D-Wade, by joining HIS team). Michael BROUGHT a championship to Chicago, Magic BROUGHT a championship to LA, Larry BROUGHT a championship to Boston… all cemented themselves in their franchises and cities, doing whatever it took to BRING a championship. They did whatever it took to BEAT the best (in beating each other, creating such great rivalries) in order to earn their championship legacies; they didn’t join each other so that their championship runs were against nobodys. LeBron cemented himself as a NY fan, a Dallas fan, and a Chicago fan, then LEFT to look to go FIND a championship. That is no legacy or legend that will live on in the shadows of the likes of MJ, etc. Even Wade has brought his team a championship, and he didn’t leave his team behind. “Winning” was his number one reason for leaving to go to Miami. I hope it pays off for him… because it cost him his heart, loyalty, dignity, respect, leadership, integrity, and a majority of the casual basketball fans who admired him.

In LeBron’s words, “I wanted to soak it in and make sure I was making the right decision for NO ONE ELSE but MYSELF.” Uhh.. teammates, organization, friends, family, community, etc…. forget them?

Sure, it’s your life, you want to be happy, but I see that the work, dedication, and loyalty that others overextend to you means nothing in the long run. That’s right–forget all you other people; it’s all about me and my hour-long special to announce it to the world and rub it in the face of Cleveland that I have no connection with you, just like I’ve shown that I never do.

You’ve really got to feel bad for Cleveland, but for many NBA fans like myself, I’ve just lost all the respect for LeBron that I had. It’s true, he joins the likes of A-Rod and Barry Bonds amongst the athletes that you just hate.

Did he tank it in some plan to go to Miami?

And remember, they all were talking to each other. They were talking as early as 2006. They said that they were going to talk to each other. Wow.

All I can say is wow. That last playoff game (the last couple of playoff games) of LeBron in a Cavs uniform looked like a guy who was tanking. Look at his eyes. He was off badly but he looked calm about it. He looked like some guy pushed a button on him.

In other words, the Cavs may have been had in more ways than this “Decision” fiasco. (Oh, and LeBron is going to regret how he rolled this thing out.

But let me say this: Kobe has held the Lakers down and won championships. He didn’t go join a superteam. He didn’t leave the Lakers to join a team merely to win a ring. Dude brought the ring to LA.

So let me say this: Right now, Kobe Bryant is the best player in the NBA. He’s the most clutch and he’s the closest thing that we have to Michael Jordan right now.

Hard to imagine the Wade/James/Bosh trifecta succeeding – particularly sustaining excellence (and harmony) for five years. I see one Pippen and two Jordans here. Something’s gotta give.

So these three guys got along during an Olympics. Big deal. They had all locked arms as equals – good Americans doing their patriotic duty. Which was living in five-star luxury while mopping the floor with undermanned international competition. And only for a couple months, too.

They’ll be in each other’s company for the grind of an NBA regular season plus a full complement of playoff rounds (so they hope). Let’s see how good a buddies they are in April 2011.

Most athletes say the politically correct thing and talk about wanting championships and in the end, they chase the money. This time the big 3 took less money (a lot less) to put together a team with the intent of winning a championship, and they get bashed for it. I take my hat off to those three and hope they do get their championships.

As far as Clevland bashing LeBron, it is ridiculous. He made his choice based on what he needed. Anyone that could take a job with another employer that would enhance their career would be a fool not to take the opportunity.

The 1 hour special was probably over the top, but whatever. Again, I applaud the big 3 for making the sacrafice to actually deliver on what they talked about: winning….

The history book don’t care about the circumstances, just says “Champion”. Lebron deserved a better coach, better players at Cleveland, he didn’t get it. Don’t blame him.

Michaela, Magic, Kobe, and Larry all had supporting cast that would have made any team better. They did not win titles alone. Lebron does not owe the city of Cleveland anything, therefore it is disturbing to read and hear that he has turned into a villain because he chose Miami. If you watched the hour long special it was clear to see that the decision was a difficult one, but because he loves the game he would rather win as a team than be an overpaid billionaire who never won a title.
If you look back at all the greats you can say that there was always a “Robin”. The only thing I can’t wait to see is, who will be Batman and who will take the role of Robin. I think it is encouraging to see players who put the game ahead of their pockets. These are young men who could have gone anywhere and made millions of dollars, but decided to lose a little money and play together. Let’s be realistic if Kobe had a chance to play with D Wade he would have jumped at it. The goal is to be the best; therefore you surround yourself with the best.
The fans burning their jerseys and hating on Lebron need to get a life. This man had to do what was best for him and his family. Chicago was a good fit but maybe he didn’t want to play there, come on if you had a choice to play with Michael Jordan or Joe Johnson who would YOU pick? We all know that Lebron is a great player so having another great player on his team makes him a bad person that the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. I’m sure if you ask any of the retired greats who never won a title what’s missing from their life/career, I’m sure they would say a World Championship.

there is a difference between Boston. All of them were past their prime. Lebron could have tried to be like Kobe/MJ/Magic/Duncan and allow management to build a team around him. Instead he jumps ship during his prime.

During Kobes prime (after Shaq left) he stayed and allowed the Lakers to land Gasol and Odom and now he won with HIS Team

He actually didn’t leave more money on the table. He will make more money over how many ever years than the same time frame with Cleveland because of the state income taxes. He did leave that extra year on the table, but then he could make even more the next time around, so it’s debatable if he really lost anything.

The level of anger aimed at James in particular is a bit hard to understand.

This happens in major league baseball every off season. The big difference is it’s the Yankees, Red Sox and Mets soliciting hired guns without the constraint of a salary cap. Are A-Rod, Mark Texiera, J.D. Drew et al any less mercenary than LeBron?

Hell, at least James and Wade and Bosh had to come up with a way to make this happen – not without sacrifice to their individual contracts by the way.

Major league baseball players (who are the most overpaid SOB’s walking planet Earth just sit on their lazy, entitled asses and wait for the best (biggest) offer to roll in. Then they (Texiera) claim at their press conference that it wasn’t about the money. Oh, BS.

Where’s the outrage for that? I guess some of us ain’t used to basketball players shaping their own destiny.

Could James have done this better? Hell yes. Is all this outrage overblown? Double-hell yes.

Are we really going to get into state income taxes? I’m sure his endorsement deals will keep him living a pretty lavish lifestyle so how much he receives from a team is a little obsolete anyway. PEOPLE GET OVER IT. It’s his life and his decision. You have a right to cheer for any team you like, no one will pressure you to be a Heat fan, I promise!

Let’s be real, Kobe had already won titles when Shaq left the Lakers so that comparison is not a good one. He had three rings so waiting for his team to bring in good players was not urgency. Lebron has no titles, and there was no guarantee that Cleveland was going to be able to bring in good role players. So he could have been there another five years, with the best season record and more MVP titles but no Championship trophy.

What a minute!!! We criticize guys all the time about taking the money instead of building a championship legacy. Then, a guy comes along (albeit overhyped), leaves his hometown, then aligns himself with the best opportunity to win the ultimate prize and we now say its overkill!?!? Truth is Lebron was in a no win situation so he decided to take the best opportunity to do just that, win. Does it seem selfish and self serving? Yes. Thats part of the make up of super star champion DNA in the NBA and it will always be that way. The more interesting part will be examining how these stars coexist and what kind of team is built around them.

Cleveland had a good team and was willing to do what it had to in order to keep filling in the pieces. Lebron never wanted to be there to begin with. This was his chance to leave and he did that. He picked the best team he thought would get him that ring. Fine, I can live with that. What burns me is his lack of guts to be honest. “It’s all about winning?” Give me a break Lebron. You are full of it, just like any other high-profile athlete.
I wouldn’t want to play in Cleveland either. Not because of the team, Who wants to live in Cleveland? Cleveland or Miami………….Cleveland or Miami………hello people……..the hell with Cleveland.

LeBron is a tremendous player. He gave his all for Cleveland, even led them to the finals (swept by Spurs). To ask him to stay in Cleveland and loose for the rest of his career is selfish on their part. The LA and Boston teams have stacked the deck for years (trading scrubs and getting marquee players added to their teams). The only way to beat those teams; is to combine forces creating a super team of players, if you want to win a title. He has made the city of Cleveland, hundreds of millions of dollars, no one wants to see that change. LeBron deserves a chance to win a NBA title. Which one of you would stay at a job with no chance of advancing in your career, when another company gives you an opportunity to realize your dreams?

So what happens in 3 years if/when Miami hasn’t won a championship? (Personally, I don’t think you can win with 3 all-stars and 10 D-league players) They will have 3 players eating up over $60 mil in cap space. Which of the 3 get traded? LeBron will get a new “process” to deal with that he hasn’t experienced before. If Miami doesn’t win 2 of the next 3 championships, his “brand” will be tarnished.

Manny

July 9th, 2010
8:54 am

To me, it’s not that he left Ohio. It’s HOW he did it that concerns me.

First of all, we have the playoffs last year. That’s when it started for me. When he played against the Celtics, he looked like he was deliberately tanking the Cavs. And this is the reason: I saw Lebron stink up the place before. He takes it personally. He looks angry and mad. He pushes the shot too much. And he gets fiery when something drops.

When he played against the Celtics, he looked like he had next year’s contract on his mind. He looked disinterested. He had that “Oh Well…” look on his face. He played like he had money on the Celtics.

Then, they made this announcement after the season that Joe Johnson, Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade and LeBron James was going to have this summit to discuss where they were going to go. Think about that for a moment- all they would need is a center and they would have their starting 5 if they all decided to go together.

Then they retracted it. And Joe Johnson knew that the Hawks was going to give him some gaudy contract and that bought him some loyalty. (At least JJ didn’t decide to join the Superteam.) People cried “Collusion!”

And then comes this 1-hour special. At a local Boys and Girls club. Due to the fact that he held it at the Boys and Girls club, I thought he was going to stay in Cleveland, because it would be a good object lesson for the kids. I thought that if he would have left Cleveland, he would have taken out a full-page ad in the Cleveland Plain-Dealer thanking the fans for his time there and making them feel good.

But he came out there and said that he’s doing “what’s best for LeBron James.” Get that kids at the Boys and Girls Club? Chase that ring, baby! You don’t owe appreciation for your past success! Go for glory!

Thanks, LeBron.

Either way it goes, it hurts him. So he goes on Dwayne Wade’s team and wins a championship. Fantastic. Now, you needed to join Dwayne Wade (who already won a ring without you) to get your ring. You’re second fiddle.

Next, you’re going to have to win a ring on a team led by you. Much like how Kobe felt before Shaq left the Lakers.

So where are you going to go in a few years? The Cavs?

Daniel

As much as I hate what LeBron did to Cleveland, he got screwed over by their front office. Everyone who talks about how all these other greats didn’t need to cherry-pick their own team is fooling themselves. Kobe needed Shaq (all-time great) for his first three rings and Gasol (top three big man in the league) for his last two. Jordan needed Pippen (a top 50 player), Magic had Kareem (top 5 all time) and James Worthy (top 50), Bird had Parish and McHale and Dennis Johnson.

What did LeBron have in Cleveland? Mo Williams? Larry Hughes? I don’t blame him for leaving, just the way he left.

Grow up you people. Cleveland never illustrated the capacity to bring and develop great talent around him. Remember the previous regime allowing Boozer to test the free agent market. I think what really has people perturbed is that three jocks just urinated on the system, which by the way if they would eliminate four franchises, would allow for talent to be acquired as opposed to being spread so thinly. If he stays in Cleveland, the Jordan won in his seventh year crap starts, if he goes to another team without the superstar package then everyone is saying he should have just stayed put. The reality of it is he believes that he has positioned himself to win multiple championships, this could actually become a shift in how players determine destinies and/ or dynasties of teams. I wish him well, they beat the system.

My very last take on this subject is this whole thing about Jordan-Pippen. Since I was 17 at the time, I can remember when Pippen came to the Bulls in 1987.

Jordan didn’t win a championship until Pippen came along, but Pippen wasn’t a world-beater, either. Pippen was backing up Oakley and Brad Sellers. He was a bench player his first year out. He was a youngster that rode Jordan’s coattails and learned a lot from Jordan and Oakley. Pippen eventually got the starting job in 1988, during the postseason.

Dennis Rodman came to the Bulls to win another ring. He already had 2 with the Pistons, though.

But here’s the bottom line: Who’s team was the Bulls when Jordan played on it? Michael Jordan’s team. Who was the MVP all the time when the Bulls won championships? Michael Jordan. Who’s statue is outside the stadium in Chicago? Michael Jordan.

Rick Flair said it best: “If you wanna BE the Man, you gotta BEAT the man! Woooo!” All I’m saying is you first gottal be the Man on your own team.

I think that allowing teams to dump salaries etc especially this year is ruining the game and the Miami Heat are like the NY Yankees of basketball which kinds of makes it uninteresting? I agree with Mark and hope their scheme fails and they dont winning but also in the process since they have to share the ball that their numbers will be demininished and because of that we hopefully one day all look back and say “Remember the time when 3 young talented superstars came together they never won any championships and their individual stats were not great since there was only 1 ball and there are not listed in the top of any NBA all-time catagories”

Very sad to see him leave Cleveland. He may come to regret this someday just as some stars like Griffey etc I think came to regret leaving their first team. To have brought multiple championships to his hometown would have been the greatest for him.

On the other hand you can’t say he isn’t about winning because he had more guaranteed money on the table to stay in Cleveland. It was really arkward to see that – It was like that popular high school cheerleader that made her rounds thru the cafeteria just so people to could get a glimpse.

I knew then that Lebron on TV is all an act – As the Cavs owners said it best, his true colors are finally coming out.

I could care less that he signed with Miami to pick up some easy rings. i would prob do the same,. But to do a one hour special and spit on all your loyal Cavs fans and an owner that did everything he could to help you win. If the GM made all the moves, we’d call it genius… but players who take control of their destinies, we call it egotistical and unfair…

Payton, Malone, Barkley, and others should have left their teams way earlier to chase the coveted “Ring”… but waited til they saw the writing on the wall at their teams, and realized that loyalty is a 4-letter word!

Congrats Lebron… and I hope future draft classes take notice!!!! Power to the Player!!!

Can we just kill the messager here in Marthasville, Goergia (Atlanta, Georgia). The news medis here in Atlanta, especially the AJC sports cohort is always, always negative. You destroyed Mr. Damon Evans, Mr. Chan Gailey, Mr. Dennis Felton, Mr. Billy Knight, Mr. Michael Vick, and Mr. Daniel Reeves. You try to destroy Mr. Paul Hewitt, and now Mr. LeBron James.
Can we destroy the news media here in Atlanta, especially the bunch at AJC. You are always negative. Not only do you attack people you forget that people have families. If you do not like people at least keep you negative feelings to yourself and just report the facts. And that’s all.
The number of people at AJC who take drugs, have committed adultery, and have evadedtheir Internal Revenue Service and State of Georgia Incoem Taxes is staggering. yeah, some of this information is public domain knowledge and the rest has boon confided by confidential sources who work in the media here in Georgia. So let someone who without sin throw the first stone. We just want the facts here in Marthasville, georgia (Atlanta, Georgia) not your worthless prejudiced opionion.
Lastly,as a native here in Marthasville, Georgia I note that the AJC circulation has lagged as your negativity has surged. Change one, change the other!

Whose to say that Lebron ever wanted to play with the Cavs. He was picked by them in the first round he did not choose to play for them. What if Minnesota had the first pick that year would we even be talking about loyalty then. I think that he did what any athlete that has made money should do. Lebron said it best, all the great teams that won titles won as a team, those super stars had help. Jordan had , pippen, Grant, then Pippen, rodman and Tony Kucoc, along with other good role players, Bird had, DJ, Mchale, Parrish and Ainge along with other good role players, Majic had , Kareem, Worthy, Scott, Cooper, Nixon, McCado, my goodness the list goes on and on. Houston and Akeem , had Drexler, Horry, Sam, Kenny Smith, and other good role players. Detroit had, Isaih, Dumars, Lamber, Rodman, Sally and other good role players, Ducan had, Robinson, Parker, Manu Ginobili and others,

Lebron had Mo Williams, Wally szerbiac are you kidding me, the man got tiired of carrying that sorry teeam. Miami will rule the NBA for a long time get use to it. STOP HATING. For all of those who think that the Heat will automatically win the East and maybe the championship: The NBA is not the Olympics! Miami will not be playing Portugal or Greece every night. They have to fill out their roster with mostly minimum wage guys (ones that are way past their prime or too inexperienced). Comparing them to the Boston three is ridiculous! Pierce, Allen, and Garnett were never egomaniac basketball players-they were team first players and meshed together and with others because of it. Boston did not completely gut their roster and build from scratch.

You have 3 guys that need the ball in their hands-and only ONE BALL! Wonder how long it will take until someone starts bitching about not getting their shots? Yep, Miami will be an instant contender! hahahahaha

No matter what the NBA has become, the winners are still teams that play AS A TEAM.

Lebron wanted to win. He made a 60 win team out of subpar players and he singlehandedly took them to the championship series a few years back. The Spurs, Lakers, and Bulls had great coaching. Popovich and Jackson. Duncan had Manu and Parker. Kobe had shaq and company and now he has Pau, Odom, and Artest which are all great pieces. Who did he have in Clevland? Yes Lebron could’ve gone to chicago it would make perfect sense. He saw Miami as his best chance to win and he took it. Sure there are questions about the coaching and the pieces that will be put around him. Thre are always questions. Lebron has now 2 of the five best players in the NBA with him for the next five years while D. Rose will probably leave when his rookie deal is up which would be a huge blow to the team. I’m a huge Hawks fan but I will enjoy watching this team.

If LBJ ever questioned his decision, he knows now that he made the right one. The owner of the Cavs let him know exactly how he felt about him the whole time. LBJ was only good for him as long as he brought his franchise from $222 mil to $476 mil net worth. Also keep in mind that he took attendance from dead last to 2nd in the NBA.

Bottom line: Cavs owner was out of line. Let’s be clear. I despise LBJ, but I must call it like I see it. Everything that he glorified and praised while LeBron wore a Cavs jersey is the same things he mocks in his letter. It was not professional at all. LeBron played his heart out for that man and that city for 7 years (except Game 5 and 6 against the Celtics). It’s so funny how the same people that rode his jock over the last few seasons are now calling him a traitor. Make no mistake about it, I think the Cavs tried with all their might to make moves to satisfy LeBron. In the end, it didn’t work out. Whether it’s because the pieces were never good enough or if LBJ wasn’t good enough or if Mike Brown wasn’t good enough, they just didn’t get it done together. I do think that LeBron should have skipped the public service announcment. It was the ultimate slap in the face to Cleveland, but Gilbert’s response is way out of line. Now that LJB is in our division (Southeast), I will hate him even more. GO Hawks!!

I browsed over most of the bloggers out there and I must say this has got to be one of the biggest moments in sports history. If you listen to most of the commentators, fans, or just plain haters, you would think this was Stars Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. People could possibly view this as the moment Annakin went to the dark side and became Darth Vader. Me, personally, it speaks out in volumes. LeBron could have easily taken the money, and still would be winless in Cleveland. I mean, think about it. Two straight years, the Cavs had the best record in the NBA. Two straight years, they didn’t even reach the NBA Finals. If you are winning, you don’t get rid of your winning formula. Mike Brown was coach of the year a year ago and now he’s jobless. Danny Ferry did what he could to put together a squad, but Jamison and Shaq are old. If you really believe that they are the missing pieces to a championship team, then you are mistaken. As talented as Mo Williams is, he is not the answer. Cleveland never landed a “blockbuster deal” to get LeBron the help he deserves. Remember the the Memphis/LA trade, you know, Pau Gasol for some shoulder pads, mops, and jockstraps. People say it’s ego driven….well, how is that? Lebron is the best player in the NBA today, hands down. Yet he left “his” team to go and join D-Wade and Bosh. He wants titles and he wants them now. The crazy part about all of this is that he left Cleveland for LESS MONEY! So when i hear the word “betrayal”, I would like to ask those out there, how? He gave cleveland 7 good years. He kept his nose clean and wasn’t like one of old beloved ones (Vick) messing around out there in the streets. He didn’t go around complaining about the organization or demand a trade like some other superstars have done. Yet, he has just became the 2nd most hated person in Cleveland, behind Art Modell. If I were Cleveland fans, I would worry if history would repeat itself. What do I mean by that? When Art Modell left, I believe his “Baltimore Ravens” went on to win a championship….just food for thought.

I’m certainly not a fan of Lebron James, but a player shouldn’t be blamed for going to a team that he thinks is a better situation for him, however he judges that. We’ve seen many players choose teams solely by total dollar amount before. Can’t blame LeBron for going where he WANTS to go, for whatever reason.
I’m not sure this superstar trio is really going to work. Bosh is a power forward, but both Wade and James are used to having the ball most of the time. The Lakers had three superstars back in the early 70’s in Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, and Elgin Baylor…and they were a good team…went to the finals three straight years…but lost every time. They didn’t win a championship till they replaced Elgin Baylor with Jim McMillian…and even then, Wilt had changed his game to become primarily a defender/rebounder instead of a scorer who demanded the ball all the time.
You can win a lot with just pure talent…but you can have so MUCH talent that it hurts team chemistry. There are only so many “touches” available, and I wonder if someone (maybe Wade?) might end up being unhappy in this new mix.

bigeasy830,
My point is this. You can’t compare LeBron with Magic, Larry, Kobe, Tim or Michael and I’ll tell you why. When you’re a franchise player (Superstar), you bring players to your team. You don’t run to another franchise player team. LeBron James is a two time league MVP and his team had the best record in the regular season for the past two seasons. When Michael, Larry, Kobe, Tim and Magic won their MVP award, they didn’t leave their teams to pair up with another superstar player to try to win a championship, especially when they were in their prime. If you suppose to be the best player in the league, why can’t you bring good players to you? By the way all those supporting players you talked about; Pippen, Kareem, McHale and Robinson. These players were drafted, acquired in the draft or already playing together and guess what, the superstar players made the supporting cast players better. So F@#$ LeBron.

And as for the owner, wow, how classless? Everyone said that LeBron showed his true colors. I think that the owner and the city of Cleveland showed their true colors. I mean, was the burning of his jersey really necessary. Were the comments the owner made necessary? It almost sounds like a couple who just broke up and one can’t get over the fact that the other one has left. And how many people out there really believe cleveland will win a ring before miami will? Lebron didn’t have enough help. That’s why he left, it’s not an act of betrayal. Just in case any of the fans or owner knew, Lebron James was a Free Agent, meaning he could choose any of the 30 NBA teams to play for. Now, I’m thinking that there must be something going on in the upper managemnt/ownership. The crazy part about this is that Toronto was willing to do a sign and trade with Cleveland, but Bosh didn’t want to go there. Why? Now everyone will say that they were in cohorts with each other. I’m surprise no one yelled out the word “tampering” in this blog. But at the end of the day, he went to Miami for less more and the chance to win rings. How can you honestly be upset about that?

Lebron dropped a notch or two in my book…

He just showed that he is not a leader. He will never be able to say that he took his team to championships and won because it will never be ‘his’ team. With all of his abilities, he just proved that he doesn’t have enough belief in himself to direct and lead his own team to victory.

No matter how many championships he wins with Miami, he will always have to share the greatness with other HOFers. That’s a sad legacy for someone with so much talent. He doesn’t ever have to worry about ever being compared to Kobe or MJ again.

It was an immature decision on his part. As he said last night, it’s all about winning championships….legacy be darned!!!

@Simpdawg…I like your comments. I did want LeBron to stay in cleveland to build his legacy. But do you remember the other great duo during the Jordan/Pippen era? I’m talking about Malone/Stockton. How many rings did they win? And the sad part is that they were “loyal” to Utah. Jerry Sloan is the best NBA Coach in the league to not to have won a ring yet. If Malone/Stockton had left early to another team, do you think they would have won one. I mean Malone went to the Lakers…he just should have went a couple of years before. The pieces that surrounded LeBron, do you think that was enough to win cleveland a title. I mean, if they brought Shaq in when he was drafted, Cleveland would have a title by now. I honestly think it speaks volume when you leave your previous team for less money and the shot of winning a title. Even KG himself said that loyalty can be a downfall and look at how many years he stayed in Minnesota and he played his heart out for the city.

ElderDawg71, with all due respect, that’s ridiculous, and you’re ignoring a lot of the elements to this story by simply boiling it down to “well, it’s just a business”. It’s a business, but the product is personal to a lot of people… it’s designed to be personal to people. That’s what the NBA wants and that is how it should be.

People keep saying “well, if i could go to another company and make more $, i’d do it, so Lebron is justified”… that analogy is stupid because most people’s jobs don’t have a major impact to an entire city they grew up in. Most people’s jobs aren’t integrated to a product designed to create a sense of community and city pride.

And this isn’t like Tom Glavine leaving the Braves to go to the Mets a couple of years ago. This is a hometown hero to whom this city is deeply committed and to whom they have, for better or worse, tied a large portion of their economy to. Yeah, technically Lebron didn’t do anything illegal by leaving and yes, he was well within his right, but if you’re going to just say “well, it’s a business… people who are mad at him are just being immature”, then you’re not seeing all the sides of this story.

to all u Lebron haters..he gave Cleveland 7 good years, took them to the playoffs, took them to the NBA Finals, gave them the best record in the NBA 2 years in a row, so what he never won a championship..it’s not like he didn’t try. Before Lebron the Cavs was a lottery pick team, which is how they got him in the first place. Not to mention how their season ticket sales went through the roof once he got there, none of this would have never happened had Lebron not went to the Cavs..now they want to burn his jersey and crusify him for leaving. Fans always hate on players when they leave the team they have always been with for more money $$$$$ but this was not the case..Lebron, Wade, and Bosh will be making less money in Miami. Joe Johnson and Amare Stadamire will both make more than those 3 guys. But it’s not about money it’s about winning a ring. Cleveland should have done more to keep Lebron there besides tell him we can offer u $30 million more than any max contract u are offered from another team…HELLO CAVS IT’S NOT ABOUT THE MONEY! Now Lebron could have re-signed with the Cavs and got a max contract and probably would have been the highest paid player in the NBA…..but he would have never won a championship, because he doesn’t have the players around him to help him win. Miami was smart, they did not want Wade to leave, so they got Bosh, tried to get Stadamire, and now they got James. Now Dwayne wade is happy and will take less money to make room for his 2 new team mates. But all Cleveland did was try to get Bosh, but when Bosh said he did not want to play in Cleveland..did they try to get anyone else there…that would convince Lebron to stay? I think the answer is no! Miami is the favorite to come out of the East, anything less than winning a championship next year will be deemed as a complete failure. But I’m no hater..it’s all about winning RINGS!!!

@phxfalcon,

I think it’s the fact that he CHOSE to go where hall of famers already are…it makes it seem as if he’s too weak to make other people look good, like he needs to be with other HOFers to look good himself.

he is the ‘big man on campus’. if bosh/wade had gone to cleveland, it would have seemed more appropriate because the perception would be that people are coming to him….not that he’s going to other people. if he had chosen chicago, he would have instantly made AA arena the ‘house that james built’, made the finals next year with them, and would have continued to be KingJames. if he would have gone to the Knicks, it would have instantly been the dynamic duo, but he would be THE markee player and Amare would be his sidekick.

Now, you can’t call him King James anymore, because Miami is not his castle for him to rule. He’s reduced his role.

Obviously, he is perfectly comfortable with sharing the role of leader with other people, but this lack of leadership ability is what will keep him from being one of the greatest to play the game.

And, he may not believe it now, but perception is everything!

I hope he get’s his ring, but after their first year of playing together and the honeymood period is over….there will be problems in South Beach. ESPECIALLY, if they don’t win a ring next season.

I truly believe that the TV special was to raise money for the boys and girls club. Being in buiness myself, I can see where he knew consumers would tune in to watch his decision. If i was a cavs fan or owner, i would have been PI$$ED with him. The only part of this whole production that I likede was the fact that he had the network give the advertising proceeds to charity. That was admirable.

But, that is not how you go about telling an entire state that worshipped you that you are leaving them. I mean, even the govenor made and a$$ of himself with those silly songs and videos. That was a complete slap in the face.

Yeah, Phoenix Falcon, let’s not pretend that the primary driver in this production was “charity”. Lebron wrapped himself up in the middle of this too much to make this some sort of selfless act. I find it curious that when owners make decisions based upon what they feel is best for them its called business. LeBron made a decision based upon what he felt was best for him and he is a traitor, disloyal…yada, yada, yada. Either the NBA is a business or its not…which is it? You can’t have it both ways. Although, I did not agree with LeBron having a major announcement on tv last night, I do agree that it’s all business. C’mon, let’s look at both sides of the fence. If a player is slowly deteriorating, an NBA owner would be looking to trade that player for someone better. LeBron did what owners would do, look elsewhere to have a better chance of winning a ring. It’s obvious from the Cavaliers owner’s comments, he is only looking out for his wallet. Well, Mr Cavalier owner, don’t spit into the wind ’cause it will come back to you.

FD, Your comment makes perfect sense. If LB didn’t live up to the hype out of high school, the Cavs would have gotten rid of him without a second thought. Kudos to him for not being OWNED by anyone. As much money as he made that franchise in such a short period of time, he didn’t owe them or anyone in Ohio anything.

People paying checks have no loyalty. Just think about YOUR employer and how easily you’d be released. Yet, the worker bees (e.g. LB, Wade, JJ, and every other player getting paid by super rich people) are expected to have unyielding loyalty. Shouldn’t it go both ways?

@Raybud, @phoenix falcon

Thank you, well said.

@Simpdawg,

No one wanted to come to Cleveland. Lebron did raise the level of the players around him. Lebron averaged 28 ppg, and almost 8 apg and 8rpg, come on people. The man could not carry that cast of supporters to the title and the Cavs could not improve his supporting cast and he knew it. He did not want to be like Karl malone and chase the title too late. It was said that Lebron did not want to end a max deal contract in Cleveland at 31 without a ring. Look at the wear and tear that all those minutes are taking on Kobe’s body. The man wants to win it all. He said he wants to put himself in the best position to win a ring. This team, barring injuries, will dominate for the next 5 yrs easy. Decent players will take less money to play on this team. They will make up the salary money with endorsements. Don’t under estimate the power of Nike and etc…

Also if Lebron and company or should I say after Lebron and company win multiple titles then we can compare him to, Magic, Ducan, Jordan, Bird, Kobe, but if he would have stayed in Cleveland you would be comparing him to Karl Malone, John Stockton and Sir Charles, and soon to be Steve Nash and that is great players who never won it all.

Also Lebron skills are second to none, to think that he will not be great along side another great player like D. Wade is stupid. if Lebron average slips 5 or 6 points his assist and rebounds will increase by 2 or 3 per game. I am looking forward to see if he can average a triple double for the season. He averaged almost 8 apg with that cast in Cleveland now he has Bosh and D. Wade to dish to, OMG!!!!!!!

Mark,
As someone who is from Akron, OH I find your opion to be misplaced at best. I am very proud of Lebron for taking his future into his own hands and creating his own path. As well all know the NBA is a business and for Lebron to be in a position to chart his own destiny rather than have it deceided by others is admirable. If going to Miami is a mistake, so be it, but it was his choice, and the comments and reation by team owner Gilbert were totally inappropriate. The so called curse comment showed his true colors and I really think that he will have to eat those words. Lebron is more likely to win multiple championships with Miami than Cleveland is to make it to the playoffs, and as far as Akron, OH, it is a great place to be from. It is economically depressed and has nothing to offer, crime is rampant. If you feel so sorry for the area, they have plenty of vacant homes and would be happy to have you as a resident.

I’m still a fan. He took less money and gave up the spotlight so that he could win. If he had gone anywhere else, would his team (or any team) have been able to beat the Lakers at any time in the next three years? James only has 10 years left of great play, and he wants to be the best ever.

His decision was obvious and everyone should have seen it coming as soon as Bosh went to Miami.

As far as him “quitting” in the playoffs, doesn’t anyone remember his elbow injury? As soon as that happened and he shot that free throw left-handed, I knew Cleveland was done. For the Cavs to win, Lebron had to play in a way that is ungodly good, and that wasn’t happening with a hurt elbow. MVP-good wasn’t good enough to help that crap team win.

Usually as an analyst you predict a team to win (or lose) based on some criteria – but not because you hate them… It’s unfortunate that sports have to come with this type of baggage – but it does (all sports). It does not mean we cannot have opinions as we all do, and we all have likes and dislikes (hate) even in sports – but to want harm to come to a person (or team) because you hate them would be even beyond you…

The Cleveland Cavaliers is a private organization and not managed by city government. So, I am confused about how he managed to let the City of Cleveland down.

Having read all of the comments, I believe “Nobody wants to play for Cleveland ” said it best: NO ONE was going to come to Cleveland to help Lebron win his championship. That became apparent when Bosh refused to go there even when Toronto agreed to do a sign-and-trade to get Bosh a max contact. Bosh just did not feel comfortable with the Cavalier ownership, and, given the way the owner went off on James last night, Bosh’s uneasiness was JUSTIFIED.

James felt that teaming with two other STUD players gave him the best chance to win a ring. I personally feel he would have ad a BETTER chance in Chicago, which has a better supporting cast, but Pat Riley has time to assemble the role players Miami will need, specifically a point guard, a couple of shooters, and a few big men to do the dirty work (rebounding and play defense).

Those kind of players (like the Hawks’ Joe Smith, Mario West, Pachula) can and will be found overseas and in developmental league, and they will be willing to take the league minimum and whatever is left in terms of Miami’s salary cap for the chance to play with the BIG THREE to get a ring. Once they prove their worth, they can then cash in with other teams.

It will NOT be easy for these guys! Someone (probably James and Bosh) will have sacrifice being the Alpha Dog for the greater good of winning that championship. They will have to mesh and learn to play with the various role palyers, and the coach (who probably WILL be Pat Riley) will have to adjust on the go to find the right mix.

BOTTOM LINE: All three of these guys (James, Bosh, Wade) EARNED the right to free agency, then they manipulated the system to get on the same team. It is clear that they all want the same thing: a championship ring! If it was JUST about the money, James and Bosh would be playing in Cleveland where they both could have gotten MAX money, but NO championship, because Gilbert could not have gotten any supporting cast.

I do NOT feel sorry for the Cavalier’s ownership, because they had SEVEN years to get it right, and they FAILED miserably.

The only person I feel sorry for Byron Scott, who signed a contract expecting to coach Lebron James, and now has a team of second-rate players. If he wins 30 games with this bunch, he will deserve a second Coach of the Year!

MJ had players and a coach. Kobe and players and a coach “when kobe didn’t have player they couldn’t make it”. Tim Duncan had players and coach. At the end of the day Cleveland owners nor GM could bring in the right personal or didn’t know who to bring in to make the team better. On top of all that nobody wants to play in cleveland. The dude doesn’t want to end up like A.I. (one of the great championship-less player). When you look around the league other teams were making critical personal changes to their rosters. Has Cleveland signed on solid free agent? Has cleveland had any free agents promise to sign if lebron would return? Cleveland wasn’t showing any signs of improvement. Heart breaking as it might seem there was no real option but to leave. I think Wade Lebron and Bosh truly wanted to play with each other long before free agency came about. And last time I check most athlete chase the dollars not the rings, & I applaud these guys for shedding dollars to be part of a power house to win multiple rings.

The big flaw with this article’s criticism of Lebron is this. All of those superstars that you compared him to had other great players on their teams when they won championships. Lebron did not in Cleveland. I do agree that he is arrogant, and it was ridiculous to have a 1 hour special to build your own hype, but again, he needs great players to win championships, just like those others guys mentioned in this article. He was a free agent and he had to make a decision based on either money or winning, and he chose winning. I used to hear of people being criticized for being too money hungry, but he is being criticized because he wants better players around him to win a championship. He wants great players like Jordan, Magic, Bird, etc had. And now he has it.

Everybody: Grow up! Stop living fantasies through these sports teams! Do something with your lives. If you are investing all your energy and emotion into a team and athletes something is wrong and you need to get it fixed. Grown men wishing ill of another is pathetic. Mark Bradley, I counted you as a sports writer of high calibre…but alas you’ve gone from “hero to villain.”

This is a business, plain and simple. Keep the emotions out of it. Blah, blah, blah. No one is in a position to dictate anything to Lebron about where he should or should not play for whatever reason. Why is it so hard for people to allow this MAN to dictate his own destiny? Jealousy/envy all around me; it’s sickning. Or maybe folks are angry that this franchise player can make power moves like these and the whole world stops and pauses to watch? Hmmmm. As for the Cavs owner, he can suck a lemon. He sounds like a plantation owner who freed a slave and then got angry when the slave didn’t want to stay on the plantation after being freed…WTF? Ridiculous. LEBRON DOESN’T OWE ANYONE DIDDLY. All Lebron haters: SUCK A LEMON!

The NBA is a BUSINESS entity – all sorts of plays happen – off the court w/in ownership and upper managment ranks. After 7 hard-working years, LeBron surely knows that; he knows his skills have an expiration date too; …. he wants some championship experiences and titles while he is at optimum commodity value (small window of time), then he can move on and feel satisified he has lived the highest potential as a player. … Doubt if he plays a very long NBA career – by his own choice; great passion for the game, but his collective inner circle have other pursuits in mind.

I for the life of me cannot understand why people are upset at LBJ!Key words this summer-FREE AGENT! He is FREE to do as he pleases. He did not sign a contract in blood saying that he would never leave Cleveland. People are just mad at him because the people of Cleveland put him on his pedestal and boosted him up to where he’s at and now he rightfully left. As for people talking about Kobe, Magic, Jordan, and Bird all being loyal, well LBJ would’ve been if he had a good supporting cast like the other 4.I can go on and on about how stupid the people who are hating on LBJ are!

Lebron James is #1 and everyone on here being negative are just haters!!!! Let the man live and do what he want to do. Noone can tell you what to do with your life! Where to live where to work!! Professional Sports is their job. If you want to move from Atlanta to New York to work at McDonalds then do you!!! I applaud him to be strong enough to do what he want for himself regardless what everyone else think he should do. Lebron scored over 50% of the Cavs points last season. Anyone will get frustrated and tired after 7 years. What if you went to work and had to produce over 50% of the work on your job everyday for 7 years. Talk about how bad Gilbert the Cavs Owner made himself look after his commits. Talk about how professional that ways!!! Don’t hate, Congratulate!!

Congratulations to LeBron James, a grown man who makes his own decisions. No granting time to a team that has been trying to win a Championship for seven years or feeling as if he owes a particular city anything. He choose to move on and grow as an athelete, and move his family to a beautiful city. It’s a grown man who can accept being the hero and the villain.

As to your article? you pretty much nailed it. I don’t think anyone really blames James (or Wade or Bosh) for following through on the plan they made in 2008 while doing the Olympics, it’s just the WAY he did it. Why did he string 6 teams on when all along he knew where he was going, he was going to where ever the other two guys went. There is a fourth player in the group who becomes available in 2012, (may be available in 2011) who made the pact with them. Know who he is?

mark, have you a problem with a man making his own decision???? and a black man at that. don’t know you mark and really hate to bring race into this; however i can not help but wonder what role it plays here. lebron is articulate and had the courage to take charge of his own destination. even you, mark, (and others may not recognize your own prejudices and entitled privileges and consider yourselves not to have a drop a racisim in you) may have deeply rooted beliefs about a black man making his decision and making big bucks while doing it. when you can bash the big monied ceo’s for doing this then i’ll believe you. btw mark, you did not start your career at ajc and left somewhere else for what you thought were greener pastures or because you could… james has just as much right as any team owner, you and any white man to take charge of his future. more power to lebron and i wish him well. get over it mark, and hope the hawks do better this year.

People!!! Stop behaving as if Lebron owes you something more than a well high performance showing in any game, on any team, in any given arena.

Lebron has done nothing wrong in sports business but stick it to Cavs owner before he stuck it to Lebron..

Like M. Jordan, Lebron’s playing career will eventually decline and like the Bulls’ owner stuck MJ and Pippens, so would have done Cavs owner to Lebron.

CONGRATULATION TO LEBRON FOR BEING BOLD ENOUGH TO MAKE A TOUGH DECISION UNDER MEDIA’S PRESSURE.

I more or less blame Cleveland for not recruiting the talent that can back-up LeBron; after all, along with the greats you mention they all had key players around them. Jordan had Pippen, Paxson, and Grant. Magic had Jabbar, Rambis, Scott, and Worthy. And Bird had McHale, Parish, Johnson, and Ainge. Who did LeBron have – not names like those who backed-up the 3 greats.

Why do people like ‘Can’t stand it’ have to make everything into a racial issue. MB never said anything about LeBron’s race. Stop making racial allegations out of everything. But I do say that I support LeBron in his decision. The owner of Cleveland is acting like a spoiled little kid who just had his toy taken away from him. I say – if he wanted LeBron to stay, he should have backed him up with better players.

I am so happy that LeBron made the decision that he did. He is a villain in whose eyes? Not mine and many others. He will get his ring. Dan Gilbert and the so called fans showed there true colors. They are only happy if he is a step and fetch it puppet that does what they want. This is a business they didn’t own him, If he became injured while playing for Cleveland, they would have dropped him like a hot potato. The fans and owners could care a less about LeBron and he owes the city, fans and owners nothing. He made Cleveland. They DID Not make them. They got it all twisted. It is so childish and immature for someone wanted to hurt a player because he was a free agent and made a choice that was best for him. Congrats to LeBron and the city of Miami.

Wow, I can tell we are in the South. Because an exceptionally talented young man fulfills his obligations and decides to move on hes a bad guy now. Mark you and Dan Gilbert seems to insinuate that LeBron is his property and he has no right to seek his best interest if they conflict with his. I am African-American and any who have read my political postings know I rarely agree with Jessie Jackson but the comments he made today along these lines are right on the mark. I admit that the advisement LeBron got on the presentation (the Decision) was questionable though I believe he had every right to do it. We are inundated with reality TV daily which is just plain garbage so to criticize LeBron for the way he did this when the whole sports world was interested; smacks of other issues being at play here, mainly jealousy and more seriously racism. I know that seems strong but there really seems to be a sentiment growing in America which insinuates he is too powerful especially as a Black man. LeBron has given this city his life and I blame city officials for depending on an athlete for their prosperity. This young man has every right to work wherever he chooses and to also preserve his longevity. The one man show style of basketball LeBron was relegated to in Cleveland would have definitely shortened his career. Gilbert did not surround him with legitimate talent to win championships and bears a great deal of the responsibility for the ORGANIZATION’S lack of obtaining a ring during LeBron’s time with the team. Another aspect I think people are overlooking is if these were the true feelings of Gilbert don’t you think LeBron was discerning enough to know this? Gilbert has political aspirations and seems to really be trying to polarize a certain group around a movement of hatred for James but from what I’ve heard in the Black community this has backfired greatly. As one African-American expressed, “we didn’t care where he got the ring, as long as he got one. We never expected to even have a chance to have him this long”. Gilbert is not only what’s wrong with leadership in Corporate America through his sense of belief that the employees are to “serve” them to their own detriment, but he is also an example of how America still feels that even successful Blacks are still second class citizens.

Well said Drew. I’m from Cleveland and I couldn’t agree with you more. Though I can’t say I totally agree with how he broke the news, I don’t blema him one bit for wanting to leave Cleveland. He would have never won anything here. The CAVS did not do what was needed to win a championship. We got Shaq way too late and A.J. didn’t have time to jell with the team. On top of that, Mike Brown was way over his head in the playoffs.
Besides, I can’t feel sorry for Dan Gilbert. He and the cith of Cleveland made a lot of money off LeBron. They used his loyalty to the city against him and thought he would just stay because he’s from here. Dan Gilbert is a Billionaire!!! I find it hard to believe that he had no clue that LeBron might be leaving. To become a billionaire you have to have some sort of foresight and intuition, don’t believe he had no clue.
To all who say Kobe did it “by himself”, really?? Wasen’t he the guy who said he wanted to be traded if he didn’t get some help?? Wasen’t he the guy puting pressure on the Lakers to “bring him some guy to help him win”?? Didn’t he and MJ have a coach (Phil Jackson) who now has 11 rings as a coach??? Magic had an allstar team and so did Bird. Name me one guy on the CAVS roster, besides an over-the-hill Shaq, in the past 7-years who will be in the Hall of Fame???
Good luck LeBron. Your TRUE fans still love you and will celebrate with you when you win that trophy.!! Besides, who wants to be Reggie Miller, Barkley, Pat Ewing, D-Wilkins ect. ect. ect…. Hi Keisha :-)

Mark it might have been other factors that helped LJ decide to leave Cleveland (coach) No one said a thing when Boston bought in Allen and KG to help Pierce win a championship. The money donated to the boys and girls club I’m sure is greatly needed. Coaches and owners try to get players to come together to win a championship. Why not the players wanting to play together.
