Two candidates to be UGA’s AD: McGarity and Williams

Georgia is again in the market for an athletics director, and it’s safe to assume Vincent J. Dooley won’t be riding to the rescue. (Michael F. Adams would rather eat a charbroiled rat than turn to Dooley.) There seem two logical candidates. Both are Georgia natives and UGA, and one of them a UGA employee. The two:

Greg McGarity: He’s from Athens. He played tennis under Dan Magill at UGA. He worked his way up the athletics department chain of command under Dooley. He left in 1992 to become an assistant AD at Florida, and he’s now Jeremy Foley’s chief aide. He’s wildly popular among Georgia fans, and his background of having worked under two of the best in the business — Dooley and Foley — would make him the odds-on favorite. Except for this:

Adams is still Georgia’s president. McGarity was viewed as a likely successor to Dooley back in 2004 but wasn’t hired. The thinking then was that he was viewed by Adams as a Dooley loyalist.

It’s possible that, six years later, the president has softened his anti-Dooley stance. It’s also possible he hasn’t. In which case, the leading candidate would be …

Carla Williams: She’s from LaGrange. She played basketball (as Carla Green) at Georgia under Andy Landers. She has a PhD from Florida State. She has worked as an assistant AD at Vanderbilt. She has worked at UGA as assistant AD since 2004 and has been regarded as a rising star in the nation’s second-most profitable athletics department.

It was Adams who, with Damon Evans in 2004, appointed the first African-American AD in SEC history. Williams would be the first female athletics director the conference has seen and would surely meet with in-house approval.

My guess: Carla Williams.

It’s McGarity. Should be signed up by the end of the week. It’s time to end the mediocrity of UGA’s athletic association.

We do not need to hire someone in house.

McGarity will bring back integrity back UGA we needed to clean house because UGA has been a laughing stock lately.

If we are going with a woman for AD, I’d pick the one in the middle of the picture-just saying

The woman seated center is Mrs. Damon Evans. The man on the left is attorney Ed Tolley.

If McGarity is not the man, they should run Adams out of town with Damon, and make him provide his own panties.

Mark, you forgot to mention a third and best candidate: Larry the Cable Guy. He’s a hard workin’ dude, honest, and best of all has a motto that best fits all our athletic programs. Who wouldn’t be motivated by ‘Git r done!’? Nuff said.

Sounds like McGarity has the most experience but both would be worthy candidates. Pull the trigger and move on…

Ed Tolley is known as “the Wolf” because he takes care of the bodies in Athens. Mrs. Damon Evans is known as “soon to be the former Mrs Evans.”

Mark may be right about McGarrity and Adams. It is such a childish a reason not take him that it fits Adams. He would fit right in with pompous ——– in the U.S. Senate. Think we could start a fund to get him to run and leave UGA?

What is the point of hiring a female AD other than to pat yourself on the back for being progressive.

I’m sorry, but the two biggest revenue generators by far are football and men’s basketball. Those are always going to have male head coaches. I don’t want to be undergoing experiments for the sake of gender equity to see if they can work under a female AD. Georgia sports are too important to me for that. Let’s leave it to a women’s basketball school like UConn or Tennessee to break those barriers.

McGarity is the obvious choice here, just as he was the best choice last time around. He hasn’t worked at Georgia since 1992, and Vince Dooley has been out for six years. I’d say at this point he’s a Foley man more than he’s a Dooley man. I can understand Adams wanting to sever Dooley ties six years ago, but it isn’t like Damon didn’t have any loyalty to Vince either. At this point that spat shouldn’t have anything to do with this decision.

I wonder if Adams would go out-of-the-box and pick someone like Suzanne Yoculan? While McGarity may have pedigree, I think picking a woman like Carla Williams or Coach Yoculan sort of softens the potential blow of losing an African-American AD.

McGarity will want to come back to Athens if asked just like Kirby Smart did. Hopefully he will go with Dave Braine. Braine certainly knows how to defeat Georgia Tech.

Yes, Yoculan would fit in well in Athens. She is living with a married man from the board of regents. She just doesn’t drive around with his panties in her lap.

What about considering a former UGA All-American/UGA Hall of Fame (academically & athletically — with morally sound track record) athlete with zero Athletic Director experience. Be imaginative and creative and get a significant leader with SEC insight and credibility. Appoint an interim – perhaps Carla Williams from the existing departrment and appoint an AD “in training” who will assume the position upon completing his “training”….It would restore the brand, image, trust and reputation to get the Bulldog Nation back on solid ground again.

Mark, I hope UGA will give serious consideration to hiring Bobby Pope – recently retired AD at Mercer University – as, at least, an interim AD. Bobby did a super job at Mercer, is well known and liked throughout the state, and is camera ready… having worked as sports anchor at WMAZ. May not be a bad choice for an AD that can give us four or five years… until Richt can take the seat.

SP, I agree. They should bring me back as AD once I finish my probation. I would just need a small salary and would be glad to serve as an RA in the girl’s dorm during my interim period. I ain’t got a phone right now, so just call my parole officer and I’ll come back to Athens if the police don’t see me.
