Carla Williams (right) could well be Georgia's next AD. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)
Georgia is again in the market for an athletics director, and it’s safe to assume Vincent J. Dooley won’t be riding to the rescue. (Michael F. Adams would rather eat a charbroiled rat than turn to Dooley.) There seem two logical candidates. Both are Georgia natives and UGA, and one of them a UGA employee. The two:
Greg McGarity: He’s from Athens. He played tennis under Dan Magill at UGA. He worked his way up the athletics department chain of command under Dooley. He left in 1992 to become an assistant AD at Florida, and he’s now Jeremy Foley’s chief aide. He’s wildly popular among Georgia fans, and his background of having worked under two of the best in the business — Dooley and Foley — would make him the odds-on favorite. Except for this:
Adams is still Georgia’s president. McGarity was viewed as a likely successor to Dooley back in 2004 but wasn’t hired. The thinking then was that he was viewed by Adams as a Dooley loyalist.
It’s possible that, six years later, the president has softened his anti-Dooley stance. It’s also possible he hasn’t. In which case, the leading candidate would be …
Carla Williams: She’s from LaGrange. She played basketball (as Carla Green) at Georgia under Andy Landers. She has a PhD from Florida State. She has worked as an assistant AD at Vanderbilt. She has worked at UGA as assistant AD since 2004 and has been regarded as a rising star in the nation’s second-most profitable athletics department.
It was Adams who, with Damon Evans in 2004, appointed the first African-American AD in SEC history. Williams would be the first female athletics director the conference has seen and would surely meet with in-house approval.
My guess: Carla Williams.

The Bulldog Nation’s big $$ boosters should demand Adams hire McGarity. He’s infinitely more qualified and should have been hired instead of Evans. Choices do have consequences…

NO BIG FISH YOUR the idiot. You’re just a schumck who knows NOTHING of what it takes to be an AD. You have never hired one, you have no idea the day to day responsibilities so how in the world do you know SQUAT about who would be better than who. Opinion is one thing you’re just a big loud mouth that doesn’t know your own limitations. Stick to the best way to smash a beer can on your had that’s more in your realm of experience.

damngooddog,
I agree not reason to make disparaging remarks about someone. But I will say this, just being a respected administrator is not enough to get the top 5 income producing AD jobs in America. You cannot tell me she is one of the top 5 most qualified people in the country and if she gets the job that is wouldn’t have to do with her race and gender. Sorry I am not buying that. I am sure they could come up with a long list of respected senior administrators, believe me. Not saying she is not qualified, I am sure she is but many, many people are and to be AD at a place like UGA, just being qualified isn;t enough. Damon was qualified but still clearly not the right person. Adams won’t pick the right person because his ego is bigger than Texas and he is a cancer to UGA and the state of Georgia.

Even though I am a Tech alum and fan, I hope the University of Georgia hits a home run with their new AD like Tech did with Dan Radakovich. Take your time guys and make sure you get a good, solid administrator and someone with some moral integrity that you can be proud of. Black, white, male or female does not matter – brains and the ability to rally the alumni and fans is what is needed in Athens now. Good luck.

I go with who Adams selects. He has earned that right. Adams has built UGA from just another large college into one of the finest universities in the southeast. Academically UGA is one of the top schools in the SEC when it used to be one of the bottom schools in the SEC.

A, where do you get your information about Adams and how much he has done for the university? Are you on the board? Speak up, and acknowledge it if you are?
There are more UGA employees, with degrees, that do not want Adams as president for academic reasons than do like him.
Board members are “friends” of Adams…it’s a joke.
Get off your high horse and sign your name if you support him.
He is a selfish, all about himself person. He would leave this school in a NY second if something better came along. His only loyalty is to his wallet. Yall are kidding yourself.

In order for the University of Georgia to get the best candidate, a nationwide search needs to be performed. Michael Adams needs to be the first to go. This is his biggest blunder, if we remember he wanted Harrick. Then hung Dooley out to dry for the hire. The real problem here is Adams. We someone who will bring back pride, and unify all involved with the University of Georgia. Adams need to be gone! He has fractured this school and community long enough.

What we do not need is a woman who came from a non-revenue sport which drains the football receipts. And to use the fact that she is not white is even more troubling. Also, let’s not assume that there is not someone from outside the UGA family who would be a better fit for this job. As the column stated, this is the second most profitable program in all of college sports. There should be a line of outstanding applicants at the door.

First of all Evans isn’t an African American, he’s an American! Just like the rest of us (black and white) that born in the US we have no more in common with the countries our ancestors came from than does the man on the moon. Just go to an African nation and you will see that. Or go to Italy and you will see that Italians Americans have nothing in common with real Italians except for skin tone.
Second, if Adams is that insecure about Dooley, then the future of Georgia’s academics and athletics is in deep, deep trouble.

First, I’m amazed at the sexism you people have displayed here. Football, and men’s basketball may be moneymakers, but the AD would not responsible for the coaching, people…(s)he’s responsible for the MONEY. Having worked on a committee with Dr. Carla Williams, I know she would do an excellent job as AD. Also, there’s a HUGE construction project going on at Butts-Mehre, and it would be best for someone already familiar with it to continue to supervise it.

Won’t be either one. This is not about athletics this is administration. Why limit yourself to locally educated people. It is my guess Adams will look at Princeton or maybe the Naval Academy for his man. Athens sits in the land of milk and honey when it comes to athletes. Tech takes the left overs and wins with them, the success of the program is not in question. It is how Georgia handles the success. You better hire someone whose head is not turned by this low level of success and has been where Adams aspires.

Here we go again; reading all the UGA loyalist who are not loyalist, just reacist.
First, UGA or any other institution should never submit to pressure form the outside; making decision for what ‘others’ will think. As a retired Law Enforcement Officer, we have come to treat a DUI or DWI as worthy of a capitol punishment offense. I am against players or anyone else loosing out simply for a DUI or DWI. It’s simply no that serious absent any damages against someone else or some somes property. Neither happened in this case. So I really hoped that Damon would be retained, Now did I really believe that? No Simply because of his race; there has never been anything to warrant hisremoval, EVER, abd he has done a fine job. But, Bull Gog nation never really accepted him. We pretended to, waiting for the opportunity.
Second, I certainly do not know who the best replacement would be, but after having a qualified african american as the Great UGA AD, appoint a female, especially an african american as AD, regardless of her credentials and ability would be worse, to many of you, that retaining Evans.
Gentlemen, it’s 2010, slavery and racism should be long gone, but we all know it’s not. Bull Dog Nation do ot want the best QB, if i mean that an african american QB is the best choice. We find any reason to say its not the best. Many of you feel the same with any position at UGA, thats reserved for someone that is a leader at UGA.
If Bull Dog Nation want to eleminate subpar leadership, ACCEPT thebest candidate, PERIOD.

Evans buyout for ‘firing without cause’ was likely for 3 years of base salary, around $1.5 million. DUI isn’t a felony, and therefor would be excluded from being a cause for firing. Adams should have had DUI spelled out as a cause for termination.

One reason McGarity or others with experience and resume might not come is if Adams is as controlling as he appears. McGarity won’t come if he has to be Adams puppet. Neither will anyone else save someone young who must jump at an opportunity of this level – just like Damon did or Carla would. He’d never do it, but Jack Bauerle would be terrific, I assure you. Bauerle and McGarity, both class acts and leaders of men. My god, no to Frank Crumley or any of those in house. And Suzanne’s had her panties in so many laps already that you’re going deeper into a moral morass if you even considered her.

Greg McGarity is way too smart (as in like Kirby Smart) to leave one of the top 3 schools in the nation to come to work for a second rate school run by Adams. Georgia will never get back the stature it had under Dooley until you get rid Adams. Sorry but it is true. PS why do you think it took Richt so long to hire a DC-he was turned down flat by 3 DC better than what he got, even 1 UGA alum turned him down.
GET RID OF ADAMS AND THEN REGAIN THE GLORY DAYS OF OL’ GA.

Claude Felton is the BEST choice for interim AD. vince Dooley is on record in saying that the second best “signing” that he ever made (after #34) was hiring Claude as SID. He has the experience and the “respect” from the national media and the Bulldog Nation to make the transition to Greg McGarrity.
