Carla Williams (right) could well be Georgia's next AD. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)
Georgia is again in the market for an athletics director, and it’s safe to assume Vincent J. Dooley won’t be riding to the rescue. (Michael F. Adams would rather eat a charbroiled rat than turn to Dooley.) There seem two logical candidates. Both are Georgia natives and UGA, and one of them a UGA employee. The two:
Greg McGarity: He’s from Athens. He played tennis under Dan Magill at UGA. He worked his way up the athletics department chain of command under Dooley. He left in 1992 to become an assistant AD at Florida, and he’s now Jeremy Foley’s chief aide. He’s wildly popular among Georgia fans, and his background of having worked under two of the best in the business — Dooley and Foley — would make him the odds-on favorite. Except for this:
Adams is still Georgia’s president. McGarity was viewed as a likely successor to Dooley back in 2004 but wasn’t hired. The thinking then was that he was viewed by Adams as a Dooley loyalist.
It’s possible that, six years later, the president has softened his anti-Dooley stance. It’s also possible he hasn’t. In which case, the leading candidate would be …
Carla Williams: She’s from LaGrange. She played basketball (as Carla Green) at Georgia under Andy Landers. She has a PhD from Florida State. She has worked as an assistant AD at Vanderbilt. She has worked at UGA as assistant AD since 2004 and has been regarded as a rising star in the nation’s second-most profitable athletics department.
It was Adams who, with Damon Evans in 2004, appointed the first African-American AD in SEC history. Williams would be the first female athletics director the conference has seen and would surely meet with in-house approval.
My guess: Carla Williams.

Dooley, Yucalon, McGarity will not be the new AD. Williams may have a shot but she in no shoe in. As a UGA grad I am partial to Adams nor to I dislike the man. I do feel he is good for UGA in a lot of ways.
McGarity is a good man but Florida’s success is not contingent on his hire. There are a zillion variables to a winning program. Ours success or lack does not totally depend on the AD. We have a lot of work to do before we contend in specific sports.
Do not get your panties in a whad over who gets the job. As for Evans, I think he did a great job. He made a grave mistake that will cost him plenty. There is a message there for all of us. Glass houses should be stone free.

Mark,
funny you mentioned a black woman as candidate. You have to understand UGA or UGA fans are all about status quo and good ole boy network.
Vince Dooley resisted any change to status quo, and he was pushed aside because of it. UGA fans still cannot forgive Michael Adams for the change although hiring Mark Richt is big upgrade.
UGA is like a big old company. If you can keep as it is, the fans will be happy. Anybody attempting any reform (even for good), the fans will be mad. UGA did not win SEC titles for 20 years before Michael Adams’ reform, but doesn’t matter that the reform has brought 2 SEC titles, but the fans are still mad with Michael Adams as I am writing this posting.
Even if that black woman brings a NC to UGA. But believe me, if Michael Adams put her as AD, UGA fans won’t forgive Michael Adams for another 20 years.

I don’t know who “Lynn” is, but that post just may be the
damn dumbest remark made in years by anyone outside of
Congress. Suzanne Yoculan currently is shacking up with a
married man, Don Leebern, who is UGA’s version of Bobby
Louder at Auburn. Superb coach, absolutely, but as a good
example for the student-athletes, you must have fallen down
the steps and hit your head on the pavement.
Vince would be great, but King Arrogant I wouldn’t allow
the hire. Greg McGarrity would be great also. And to UGA,
Classof2004, Vince was a superb administrator and the UGA
athletic department bottom line proved it. He wasn’t paid to
be everybody’s pal, and he was, in fact, on the payroll to
win football games and run a profitable athletic department.
He did a damn fine job of doing both, thank you very much !

Yep it’s all racist I tell you, that Trooper didn’t have to include all the facts in his report. That trooper is racist, he was profiling I tell you. The trooper could have taken him to a hotel and let him slide, just more proof it’s all racist. If that wasn’t a white women he would have never been stopped, racist I tell you. A black man driving under the influence at 11:54 with a woman who’s not his wife, what’s wrong with that she’s just a friend. Doesn’t every man hold their female friends panties in their lap, what’s wrong with that? Yep the only reason he got stopped, racist and the only reason he was fired/resigned, racist!

As a UGA grad myself, I can’t wait until Adams is gone and I can get a new diploma issued with the new president’s name on it to display proudly. I am embarrassed his name is on my current one (I haven’t removed it from the tube 8 years after receiving it) and if those who are grads from elsewhere commenting on how great Adams is knew the REAL story behind what goes on in UGA politics, they would feel the same way I do. Adams runs UGA the way Blago ran Illinois…

Uh…Still wondering….a police report is supposed to contain EVERYTHING that occurs during a stop. If he had left it out of his report, he would only be undermining his case for DUI. I am surprised we don’t have dashboard video of this yet…open records anyone?

McGarity or Williams would be fine hires….Stanford excels in the cup because they compete in so many more sports than we do and excel in sports where most schools don’t participate….goes for the whole Pac-10 in general. Fencing/Water Polo anyone???

EmoryDawg – Adams can’t take all the credit for the academic standards improving over the years, even though he does…it’s called the HOPE scholarship.
The current situation of the Athletic Dept is not in shambles..Damon screwed up, there’s no need to “clean house”.

Any racist claiming Damon Evans was an “affirmative action hire” didn’t know the man’s resume, or pay attention to the great job he was doing until last Wednesday.

I agree that we need the best “person” available. No prior connection to GA. is needed. I like the idea that down the road we should make way for Coach R who probably will be a better AD than Coach. WE don’t need to make a mistake in veiw of what just happened.

If Michael Adams continues to play the “I hate anyone with Dooley connections”, we should disconnect him. His personal vendettas cost UGA greatly. Of all the people in the world I would like to have removed from anywhere, it would be Michael Adams. No one else wants him so it looks like we will be stuck with him for a long time. Michael Adams is the only thing I don’t like about UGA. I graduated in 1969 and have followed the Dawgs all my life. It would be heaven to see Miichael Adams leave UGA. Why don’t we start a move to get rid of MA?

Mr. Evans must tell his lawyer to call Tolley immediately and tell him to triple the settlement to
$100 million. It is obviously the UGAA wants to settle bad and they have the money to pay and Evans is in the strong position.
Tolly likely doubles his rates on Sunday to $4K per hour since he had to miss Sunday School and the discussion about ethics and conscience. Working on the 4th of July doubles the rates again to
$8K per hour.
Look at all the money the UGAA could have saved by waiting until a business day.

Evans’ lawyer may have told him to sign what ever Toly put in front of him since they could always claim duress later and sue for more. The UGAA will pay almost anything to them because of his skin collar and the bad publisity. Tolie’s first offer was likely $50 mil to walk. HIs wife need the dinero for the kids.

Rx Dawg and G-Dawg – Many of us find it hilarious that you guys continue to harp on Dr. Adams, waxing philosophical about how to run a University. Don’t get me wrong, working the afternoon shift at Best Buy probably does qualify you to opine on things 1,000 times above your pay grade, but maybe….just maybe….the Board (who has had many, many chances to remove him) thinks that Dr. Adams is ….wait for it….actually good for the University. While you and your ilk sit at home spooning with photos of Vince Dooley, literally and figueratively, riding Herschel’s back to a championship 3 decades ago, others have moved on. Ask an Alabama fan what a 30 year old title means…..nothing. That is is precisely why Alabama has flourished, not made excuses, and won more titles, while UGA continues to look back at the “Dooley years” and moan on and on and on and on about football title that bascially predates the show Mash. My advice to is to move on. Oh, and go back to stocking shelves and leave the grown up work for others. Cheap shots at Adams just make you look dumb.

Promote Mark Richt to AD, Hire Kirby Smart as HC and then you’ll have the best of both worlds: honor, decency and integrity at the AD position and one who knows the system, and defensive greatness at the HC position and one who as proven he can stop the Florida offense coupled with a National Championship on his resume.

Having know Greg and family since I was 8 years old, my counsel, if aksed, would be absolutely DO NOT take the UGA AD job if offered. Greg left UGA just prior to the 1992 football season. That’s a long time ago. He has a life in Gainesville. A VERY good one, to boot. He is NOT Foley’s gofer as mentioned above. We have had several conversations concerning the scope of his position. Greg needs to look at the offer, if it were to come, very unemotionally. First, he is in line for, at the very least, serious consideration for the AD job at UF. The AD job at UF is a FAR superior job than AD at UGA. UF aspires to greatness. UGA aspires to mediocrity. Second, what if the UGA deal goes bad? There are no guarantees involved. Then he’s thrown it all away for nothing. This decision is a business one, and hopefully Greg will address it as such.

What all of you are failing to understand is that you are basically saying Dr. Williams is UN-Qualified BECAUSE she is African American and/or a woman. If you would do a little investigating and talk to others around the country you would find that she is one of the most respected senior administrators anywhere- period. It has NOTHING to do with race or gender. She is just solid and it is unfortunate that you are taking away from her clearly demonstrated success by your un-informed comments
