Two candidates to be UGA’s AD: McGarity and Williams

Carla Williams (right) could well be Georgia's next AD. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

Georgia is again in the market for an athletics director, and it’s safe to assume Vincent J. Dooley won’t be riding to the rescue. (Michael F. Adams would rather eat a charbroiled rat than turn to Dooley.) There seem two logical candidates. Both are Georgia natives and UGA, and one of them a UGA employee. The two:

Greg McGarity: He’s from Athens. He played tennis under Dan Magill at UGA. He worked his way up the athletics department chain of command under Dooley. He left in 1992 to become an assistant AD at Florida, and he’s now Jeremy Foley’s chief aide. He’s wildly popular among Georgia fans, and his background of having worked under two of the best in the business — Dooley and Foley — would make him the odds-on favorite. Except for this:

Adams is still Georgia’s president. McGarity was viewed as a likely successor to Dooley back in 2004 but wasn’t hired. The thinking then was that he was viewed by Adams as a Dooley loyalist.

It’s possible that, six years later, the president has softened his anti-Dooley stance. It’s also possible he hasn’t. In which case, the leading candidate would be …

Carla Williams: She’s from LaGrange. She played basketball (as Carla Green) at Georgia under Andy Landers. She has a PhD from Florida State. She has worked as an assistant AD at Vanderbilt. She has worked at UGA as assistant AD since 2004 and has been regarded as a rising star in the nation’s second-most profitable athletics department.

It was Adams who, with Damon Evans in 2004, appointed the first African-American AD in SEC history. Williams would be the first female athletics director the conference has seen and would surely meet with in-house approval.

My guess: Carla Williams.

George O’Leary is an honest decent man…..I’m kidding…somebody suggested Stinchcomb…..I’d like to see that “name in the hat”…he’s smart and got his degree at UGA…I have no clue if he wants the job…I’m thinking Damon didn’t work 10hr days..???? He drove home everyday with smile on his face…I don’t…

Damon Evans, Lothario that he is, did a very good job as AD. I am also a Michael Adams fan and believe his work at the University is outstanding. His goal can’t be to compete with Duke or Harvard or Emory. From the financial and political status of GA, that is impossible. He does believe UGA graduates can compete and he is improving academics with that in mind. If you asked him he would probably define his goal for UGA to be ranked academically with UVA, UF, UNC, etc. That takes money, the one thing he doesn’t need is for the Athletics to become a financial or pr burden and as we all know Damon Evans was quite successful at that until now. That’s why I believe he’ll have to go outside the klan to find a long term solution for AD position.

why does adams have so much power. we don’t need a dictator running UGA. there has been nothing but disharmony since this man was hired. fire adams and the people who hired him to. the people of the state of georgia deserve better than this. this man doesn’t need to hire another soul. the cost of going to school at uga has gone up almost every quarter under this man. we need somebody to unite instead of dividing us. buy this man out and put him in the road and hire someone that’s not self centered. and just think the ncaa had this man in mind to be the head of all college sports. what a nightmare.

For those who previously asked, Dr. Williams is married with 3 children. She is very involved with the community and it appears as though she, not Damon, along with Felton kept the program afloat.

If you may recall, when Moreno and Stafford declared for the draft, they mentioned Dr. Williams, not Evans, when they stated how hard she had been on both of them to finish their degrees. She’s the real deal.

uga has been in a mess since adams set foot on georgia soil.the cost of going to school has went out of control. a self centered dictator is what he is.he has to much power for somebody with his character. buy him out and put him in the road before he does more damage to uga. just think the ncaa had this man in mind to run college sports.

Why don’t we hire as AD teh most successful coach in UGA history? Hire Suzanne Yoculan. She has the fund raising skills, discipline and would be a great change to the good old boy Athletic Department.

Matt Stinchcomb is the type of person who this program needs to continue the UGA legacy by surrounding himself with an experienced AD from a school with proven track record of athletic and academic success. Matt if your reading this please submit your name as an interested canidate…our young men and women at UGA need your leadership!!!

So let me get this straight – some of you are suggesting Yoculan – she lives with a married man – yes he is still married. Apparently she has changed her last name to his or is least using it, even though everyone knows that they can’t be married. What’s the difference, Evans, a married man, with another woman or Yoculan, living openly with a married man? Exactly how would that improve the situation?

Hey Outdoor84 and ADAMsorry– Nice call that “politics” would be involved in any decision and way to bad mouth Dr. Adams. Don’t pretend like you know how to run a billion dollar corporation like an SEC university. My guess is you work the night shift at one of those too-trendy-for-their-own good coffee shops near downtown Athens. You know the ones that name coffee snarky things like “Goat’s Breath” and “Camel Stool” instead of just “Regular” and “Decaf” — My guess—and this is just wild speculation–is that Dr. Adams knows a little more about running a university and a multi-million dollar athletic program than you do. You may not like him, but he gets the job done and gets it done effectively. You stiff pours of day-old coffee don’t qualify you to opine on Jack squat. I love you folks who take cheap shots at Adams. He does X and you say he should have done Y. Had he done Y, by golly, you’d have been shouting for X. My suggestion for you is to return to wearing turtle necks to local Athens bars, use big multi-syllabic words, and try to convince some19 year old grad student that you know what you are talking about.

It’ll be Carla Williams. The only criticism Georgia could have been facing over Damon’s dismissal would be from the race pimps….and Williams gives you another African-American AD and a female to boot.

ugachick 65…Suzanne is not married. I don’t see you calling for Leebern to be removed from the Board of Regents. And my understanding is that he has been pursuing a divorce for a number of years. Not suprisingly, financial terms are an issue. Suzanne has shown support for the university, a passion for her gymnasts and a willingness to work hard on her own to do what it takes to make a program rise to a national level and have the financial backing to do so. She has shown leadership. That is what I want in an AD.

Excuse me! Derek Doley is doing his best to totally undermine UGA. Don’t think we need him, and I do agree that this blog had something to do with Evans’ dismissal, despite the fact that he needed to go. I am still wondering why so much should be added in a police report. I’m considering carrying a Bible and Mother Mary in my car, just in case I get pulled over by Officer/Trooper Cabe for a sober illegal lane change. I don’t drive drunk and neither should Evens or anyone else, but this other nasty info did not need to be included.
Plus, I do believe in God, so if I carry them, no one should complain.

Big Fish –

Evans was quite well qualified for the UGA job when he was selected by Adams. And then once he got the job, he upgraded some facilities and piloted the athletic program to being among the most profitable in the nation.

Again, it’s folks like you and “Mr. Cox” who prove that racism is alive and well in the United State in 2010. A man is a UGA letterman. Earns his degree and gets a masters. Goes off to work in the athletic offices of two other schools before returning to his school to serve as the second-in-command. Then once he returns, he does yeoman’s work as the assistant, before moving into the lead position as AD. In your eyes, if that were describing a white man, he would be fully deserving of the job. But because that described Damon Evans, a black man, those accomplishments are downplayed and the only reason he got the job was because of affirmative action.

PLEASE! Get out of your mom’s basement more often. Stop watching FOX NEWS. Come into the 2000’s!

UGA has a history of leaders with some serious ethical flaws. I know higher education is a political climate, but UGA has a history of hiring some real knuckleheads from Ray Goff to Jim Harrick. And even the “good” leaders like Vince Dooley and Suzanne Yoculan have a less than stellar ethical track record, even though everyone elevates them to hero status because of their accomplishments. I mean have any of you actually met Vince Dooley? He isn’t particularly a nice guy, and I personally know quite a few of his former players, many of whom can’t stand the guy. Yet most fans kiss the ground he walks on and demonize Adams. Why? Because he won football games. I’m not a fan of Michael Adams, but I didn’t exactly shed a lot of tears when he canned Dooley. And if most of you REALLY knew Dooley, you wouldn’t either.
