Carla Williams (right) could well be Georgia's next AD. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)
Georgia is again in the market for an athletics director, and it’s safe to assume Vincent J. Dooley won’t be riding to the rescue. (Michael F. Adams would rather eat a charbroiled rat than turn to Dooley.) There seem two logical candidates. Both are Georgia natives and UGA, and one of them a UGA employee. The two:
Greg McGarity: He’s from Athens. He played tennis under Dan Magill at UGA. He worked his way up the athletics department chain of command under Dooley. He left in 1992 to become an assistant AD at Florida, and he’s now Jeremy Foley’s chief aide. He’s wildly popular among Georgia fans, and his background of having worked under two of the best in the business — Dooley and Foley — would make him the odds-on favorite. Except for this:
Adams is still Georgia’s president. McGarity was viewed as a likely successor to Dooley back in 2004 but wasn’t hired. The thinking then was that he was viewed by Adams as a Dooley loyalist.
It’s possible that, six years later, the president has softened his anti-Dooley stance. It’s also possible he hasn’t. In which case, the leading candidate would be …
Carla Williams: She’s from LaGrange. She played basketball (as Carla Green) at Georgia under Andy Landers. She has a PhD from Florida State. She has worked as an assistant AD at Vanderbilt. She has worked at UGA as assistant AD since 2004 and has been regarded as a rising star in the nation’s second-most profitable athletics department.
It was Adams who, with Damon Evans in 2004, appointed the first African-American AD in SEC history. Williams would be the first female athletics director the conference has seen and would surely meet with in-house approval.
My guess: Carla Williams.

The choice should be McGarity. Please don’t hire Williams just because she’s black and female. It may look good on the affirmative action books, but do the right thing and forget about political correctness for once.

“Delbert just grow up. damn dude. has it ever entered ur mindless mind that we need somthing more “outside the box” instead of the “old school”. This world won’t allow it. damn dude get a hot dog and drink a beer.”
I’ve had a few brews today (no driving), and a couple of hotdogs. I’m nevertheless confused. What am I supposed to argue about, thinking “out of the box instead of the old school”, or “This world won’t allow it?”
To me, thinking “out of the box” “instead of the old school” would be, *don’t hire somebody based on a succession tree that is treated like the English royal family and various princes with red and black blood.*
As to “this world won’t allow it,” it seems to me to be a comment on the rigid belief/faith of the masses in anything but the royal succession won’t be considered.
I’d choose to think out of the box.

Whoever over at Florida hired Billy Donovan and Urban Meyer is a genius. That’s what it takes to be a great AD, hire the right football and basketball coach, head coaches that finish #1 in the country in football or basketball.

Why don’t we hire the most qualified person that will be respected on campus and abroad? Should it be a male? Yes. The reality is football is the money sport. Football is what you think of when UGA sports are mentioned and it always will be. Football will always be a man’s world. On another note, to even mention the new AD needs to be African American and to bring diversity into the picture is nauseating. Simply hire the best for the job…period.

I for one, would like to see Adams gone. Yes, Dooley was ready to go, I think. This is not about Dooley in my mind. It is about Adams’s two lousy decisions ………….J Harrick and now Damon. Adams has missed the mark on these two and in fact, Andy Landers needs to get gone. He has not done anything since the fricking 70s or early 80s. Adams has missed the mark as President. What has he done for UGA??? Fund raising is about it.
This AD thing is not big deal. Back a few years ago, ( 20 yrs? ) the top dog at GE and his highly paid top FEMALE administrator were in a similar thing and both got gone from GE. Both were at the very, very top of management pyramid too, possibly CEO pre Walsh days. International news that was. GE has not done much lately. Immel will go next.
In 8 months this too will pass.

Affirmative Action=Nepotism
July 4th, 2010
9:09 pm
Mr Charlie – While we may have differing views, thank you for engaging in a civil manner.
Your point about having successful parents is basically my point. Let’s try this example, if a student does not perform well on the SAT and would not otherwise be accepted into ABC University, but the parents are successful and have power, the student will be admitted solely based on the parents influence= Nepotism.
Conversely, if a minority student does not perform well on the SAT, coupled with not having successful parents with power and influence, if the student is accepted = Affirmative Action.
Anyone who has ever been hired/accepted into college based on who they know and not what they know, sadly that is nepotism. Anyone hired/accepted into college because of race/gender and not what they know, sadly that is affirmative action.
I think many people are so quick to disparage affirmative action that they fail to realize they themselves are beneficiaries of nepotism = affirmative action.

What would it take to get rid of Adams? Who holds him accountable? He obviously is not a good judge of character (i.e. Jim Harrick, Damon Evans). Those 2 hirings right there would be enough for most people to get fired. He is also one of the most pious, arrogant, greedy, money hungry persons on the planet. Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud of my alma mater just not of its president.

Affirm,
Affirmative Action is the law of the land, so if a few trolls bash it, don’t let them get under your skin.
I remember a scene on all in the family where Archie was complaining to George Jefferson about a black guy who got hired on the dock via Affirmative Action. He said:
“I did not need no G** D** affirmative action to get me my job”. Edith said ” THAAATS RRIIIGGT ARRCCHIIIEEE, YOUR UNCLE GOT YOU YOURS”. (I miss the day when we could laugh at ourselves.)
That was in 1972, so nepotism/affirmative action has been recogonized by the establishment for a long time.
But the fact is, nepotism will always have a leg up on Affirmative Action, because government legislation will never overcome good role modeling a quality involved parents.
However, I assure you, the Obama girls have a future full of opportunity equaling the Bush girls, so it is evolving from a race to more of a class issue. Our system ain’t perfect, but it is the best around.
Sadly, the bigger picture is beyond alums

Folks, Adams wants to sell UGA as one “properly enlightened southern university”. He can point to all of the affirmative action deals in place and that will get the fools like a Barabra Streisand or a Sean Penn to write checks. Neither of these two entertainers graduated from any university, I suspect BUT they have MONEY and that is where Adams comes in. He is a fund raiser and he need all of the liberal window dressing that he can get.
Poor, unqualified kids get into , Vandy, Duke or Harvard or Georgetown or Yale. This fact makes the well off alums so happy. If kids come from rich families, then they too get into a Yale. I have two relatives, one in Duke and one in Georgetown and they both rich daddy/mommy and both dumber than rocks. Both will graduate from these two schools. They use the pass fail system. Anyone can graduate once they are in these schools. This is where Adams wants to take UGA. He wants it to be a top quasi public, private type of school. Fine with me. I am retired and I am a UGA grad.
We do not want white, middle aged, EXPERIENCED BUSINESS men as an AD, …………..we want black women with 6 fatherless kids and that is what it is all about in this political world. In the end, now at 61, I would like to see about 3 or 4 more SEC titles soon ( over 10 -12 years? ) and one NC …………..then, as an early 70s UGA grad, I will hang it up and care less.
Go Dogs.

Although Williams sounds like a damn good dog, and I don’t mean any disrespect, I think McGarity is the man for the job at this point. He should have been hired instead of Evans way back when, but we got what we deserved and have to move on. Since Greg has been at UF, they are a 3 time National Football Champion and have back to back Basketball National Championships. Hopefully Greg would like to bring the winning formula back to Athens that he was a part of at UF. We need a winner, we need scoreboard, we need McGarity. I think Williams is more than just a PC pick, she obviously has talent and is smart, but I don’t think you can have as much success rub off on you working at Vandy, and sad to say UGA, as you could working in the most successful program in the country. I really hope Adams makes things right by bringing Greg home, but something tells me that’s not going to happen. He really doesn’t care about the best thing for UGA athletics, he cares about the best thing for President Adams. Sucks for us.

Adams has just rode the coattails of Zell Miller’s HOPE scholarship. The fat azz was in the right place at the right time to take credit for UGA’s GPA and SAT scores going up due to free college for the masses. Boy! Did he ever spin that into his favor. The only thing Adams is good at is twisting and turning things to make HIM look good, no tthe Univ. of GA. The POS has squandered more opportunities than made for the Univ.of GA.
