Two candidates to be UGA’s AD: McGarity and Williams

Carla Williams (right) could well be Georgia's next AD. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

Georgia is again in the market for an athletics director, and it’s safe to assume Vincent J. Dooley won’t be riding to the rescue. (Michael F. Adams would rather eat a charbroiled rat than turn to Dooley.) There seem two logical candidates. Both are Georgia natives and UGA, and one of them a UGA employee. The two:

Greg McGarity: He’s from Athens. He played tennis under Dan Magill at UGA. He worked his way up the athletics department chain of command under Dooley. He left in 1992 to become an assistant AD at Florida, and he’s now Jeremy Foley’s chief aide. He’s wildly popular among Georgia fans, and his background of having worked under two of the best in the business — Dooley and Foley — would make him the odds-on favorite. Except for this:

Adams is still Georgia’s president. McGarity was viewed as a likely successor to Dooley back in 2004 but wasn’t hired. The thinking then was that he was viewed by Adams as a Dooley loyalist.

It’s possible that, six years later, the president has softened his anti-Dooley stance. It’s also possible he hasn’t. In which case, the leading candidate would be …

Carla Williams: She’s from LaGrange. She played basketball (as Carla Green) at Georgia under Andy Landers. She has a PhD from Florida State. She has worked as an assistant AD at Vanderbilt. She has worked at UGA as assistant AD since 2004 and has been regarded as a rising star in the nation’s second-most profitable athletics department.

It was Adams who, with Damon Evans in 2004, appointed the first African-American AD in SEC history. Williams would be the first female athletics director the conference has seen and would surely meet with in-house approval.

My guess: Carla Williams.

Fisheries – you actually typed these words: “What is the point of hiring a female AD other than to pat yourself on the back for being progressive.”

Really? Females should only be hired as a PR ploy? I get that you’re only 30 something but you must have been born and raised in the really deepest, darkest section of our state.

George – AA= Nepotism. That is literally the dumbest analogy I have ever heard. Moron.

I see you are quick to respond in an infantile manner with the name calling. Not so quick to explain why it is the “dumbest analogy.” I understand the truth can be a bitter pill to swallow, hence your bitterness.

I am expecting your kind of responses because people do not want to see nor admit affirmative action is the same as nepotism. If minority people get a job or position they are not qualified for, that is indeed affirmative action. If a white person gets a job or position they are not qualified for, it is indeed due to nepotism.

I have known Carla Green-Williams for more than 30 years, those of you who have chosen to judge her without knowing her should do your homework. She is more than qualified and deserving of the AD position, not to mention that you will never have to worry about her morals. She bleeds RED & BlACK!

Mark,
What about Yoculan as a candidate? She is still hooked up w/ athletic board member and money man that pushed her for asst. ad for Dooley, and money man backed Adams to get job at UGA in the first place. Seems like he would call in that favor and Adams could not refuse him. Remeber with Adams, it is all about the politics.

Have always thought the world of Damon Evans and will pray for the man AND HIS FAMILY. But let’s face it – he basically had the world by the tail. Beloved in the Dog Nation – doing a fine job for the program; professional, polished one of the youngest A.D.’S in the business and one of the very few African American’s in his position. And from what I can see – a beautiful wife! And a brand new contract that pretty much set him and his family for life!

Hate to admit it – Mark has it right. No way will McGarity get this – too close to Dooley.

Affirmative Action, how about Barry Bonds? Josh Cribbs? and Kellen Winslow Jr? Do you think they were given the jobs due to nepotisim? Or do you think genes, talent, parental support, personal choice and commitment had anything to do with it?

Do you think someone else should have randomly been given their jobs based on fairness?

I don’t trust Michael Adams’ judgment at this point. He’s lost a tremendous amount of credibility. That being said, no matter who Adams hires as AD, I hope he or she gets the full support of the Dawg faithful.

McGarity by far!!! Adams should be gone! Anyone who will allow someone to come onto their campus with a weapon, kill a deer, and not be charged as the policy states, does not care about the school or students!!! He has real problems.

“They should do a nationwide search and try to get an existing AD at a big school.”, who would be willing to relocate to Athens, Georgia.

I’m working my way down the US News list:

Miami’s out, because they are not a big school (15,000 enrollment). I have to say I’d pick Athens over the Miami area, for a lot less money.

Bunch of other hoity-toity ACC schools. Nah.

Next on the list would be Iowa. Big school (29,000), located in Iowa City. Never been there, but I don’t think Iowa City would do it for me. Thumbs up on the relo to Athens.

Play your own game from here on.

By the way, I was born in Athens and I grew up within 25 miles from there.

Mr Charlie – Ideally, all hiring decisions should be based on qualifications and experience regardless of race or gender. But I am discussing the reality.

In the real world, when an unqualified/inexperienced minority is hired = Affirmative Action.
In the real world when an unqualified/inexperienced non-minority is hired = Nepotism.

People may not like it, but those are the facts.

Mr Charlie

Damngooddog, he hired and supervised Evans. There should at least be an investigation to see if Evans has displayed this type of behavior before, and if so, did Adams witness it and document it, and give Evans the appropriate council. If the signs were there and Adams ignored it, he should fall too.

When you hire and supervise someone, and that person fails, your ability to hire and supervise is rightfully called into question. Anyone can make a bad hire, but when you look at the Harrick situation, this does not appear to be an isolated incident, it is a trend.

Let’s think about this … how much MONEY is left after the Evans settlement? And why, why does he even get a penny of the state’s money? Is there no morals clause in his contract? No clause that says if you represent negatively (such as getting drunk, driving, and with a woman other than your wife), you can be fired for cause?

He should leave with not a cent more than his paycheck that covers the period ending June 30th. He doesn’t deserve to get anything.

“Dooley dislikes Adams because the president pushed him out. Adams dislikes Dooley because he fought back.”

Dooley hates Adams because he’s a pretentious, self-serving asswipe. Adams hates Dooley because he’s an egomaniac who couldn’t stand the fact that not only was Dooley far more popular, but he also wouldn’t be controlled by Adams. Evans was probably nothing more than a puppet for Adams. The day Adams gets show the door, will be the best thing that ever happened to UGA.

Damon Evans was the favor Michael Adams granted the UGA Athletic Association (AA). I doubt seriously there will be another like McGarity or Williams, in spite of their sterling credentials. I think he’s had enough of the incestuous bulldog in-breeding among the in crowd (AA). Adams wants athletics to spin like a sewing machine but not out of control His passion for the University is academics, financial stability and research. It’s hard to do in the economy of the last decade and a political system like GA’s where he has no state or national support of substance. The UGA Athletic Association, fans and alumni need to buck up and demand a mature, proven leader who can give our sports programs credibility and competitiveness. Who the hell cares if some body bleeds red and black? For the kind of money we can pay at UGA for AD we don’t need any person bleeding we need them working! Do a national search and get a person of quality – man, white, woman, Puerto Rican, Methodist, black, short, tall, skinny, fat. Do not hire any one connected to the Athletic Association or coaching staff, past, present.

I understand you point affirmative, but when a sibling has a successful parent, they learn what it takes to be successful.

When they see thier father the newsman reporter come home and spend 2 hours writing a story, they will also know that they will have to spend 2 hours in the evening writing stories too if they decide to go into that business.

So when they appear to be “inexperienced”, they actually have a lifetime of invaluable experience. It is called a role model, it is called good parenting. Try as it may, the government will never replace it.

If you think Evans would have gotten the job if he wasn’t black, you’re only kidding yourself.
He was hired because it made UGA look progressive. That’s why the next AD will be the black female. It’s all about appearance now in Athens. Ability to get the job done has nothing to do with it..
