Carla Williams (right) could well be Georgia's next AD. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)
Georgia is again in the market for an athletics director, and it’s safe to assume Vincent J. Dooley won’t be riding to the rescue. (Michael F. Adams would rather eat a charbroiled rat than turn to Dooley.) There seem two logical candidates. Both are Georgia natives and UGA, and one of them a UGA employee. The two:
Greg McGarity: He’s from Athens. He played tennis under Dan Magill at UGA. He worked his way up the athletics department chain of command under Dooley. He left in 1992 to become an assistant AD at Florida, and he’s now Jeremy Foley’s chief aide. He’s wildly popular among Georgia fans, and his background of having worked under two of the best in the business — Dooley and Foley — would make him the odds-on favorite. Except for this:
Adams is still Georgia’s president. McGarity was viewed as a likely successor to Dooley back in 2004 but wasn’t hired. The thinking then was that he was viewed by Adams as a Dooley loyalist.
It’s possible that, six years later, the president has softened his anti-Dooley stance. It’s also possible he hasn’t. In which case, the leading candidate would be …
Carla Williams: She’s from LaGrange. She played basketball (as Carla Green) at Georgia under Andy Landers. She has a PhD from Florida State. She has worked as an assistant AD at Vanderbilt. She has worked at UGA as assistant AD since 2004 and has been regarded as a rising star in the nation’s second-most profitable athletics department.
It was Adams who, with Damon Evans in 2004, appointed the first African-American AD in SEC history. Williams would be the first female athletics director the conference has seen and would surely meet with in-house approval.
My guess: Carla Williams.

If you want more of the same, bring Dooley back. Where do you think Damon learned his ways? Dooley was/is as dirty as they come. Just ask all those around when Jan Kemp finally made is somewhat public. She just scratched the surface!!! You people deserve what you get!

Mr. Adams has done nothing but try to put some academic integrity back into the state university. But as Big Dawg and 90 percent of the fan base proves nothing but the final score on Saturday matters, Jan Kemp exposed this and all the corruption that was going on and she is reviled by everything Bulldog. So, when others have the opinion of your “school” and the “worth” of its diploma that alot of peole do, all you UGA folks that “get it”, 10 percent or whatever, thank the Big Dawg attitude and all those like his. Despite what most think, it should not just be Saturdays that matter, and I beleive Mr. Adams is the only person over there that realizes this. How about standing for something besides football for once. I know, how about education and integrity, seems you could really use some of both especially the second, seing as what has taken place. But thats ok, crucify Mr. Adams for trying to make your “university”, and its diploma a little more important than 12 Saturday’s in the fall.

Vandy does it without an AD. Former Chancellor Gordon Gee (now Ohio State president) wanted to bring athletics back toward the mainstream of campus life, so they cancelled the position and the athletic department. They have a Vice Chancellor for University Affairs and Athletics.

UGA needs to think bigger than assistant ADs. That means an outside hire.
How about the UConn AD or the Utah AD?
And don’t forget, UGA is a football school. Gonna need someone tough.
If Mark Richt has a lousy year, do you think Williams has the —-s to fire him. I think not.

Should the best choice for AD be because of gender or race? I don’t care who as long as they are qualified! Don’t choose BECAUSE of race/gender-choose BECAUSE of qualification and character!

Dear ShackDawg:
“FisheriesDawg, you’ve got to be at least 60 with this comment”
Under 30, actually, but thanks for making assumptions.
“Perhaps the point might be that she’s could do a better job than the male candidates. Look at where the male in charge led us you idiot.”
How would what you just said be any different than someone saying “we don’t need to hire another black person as AD, look at where the last one led us you idiot”? Neither would have anything to do with anything.
My point was that Bradley seemed to be insinuating that Adams would select Williams BECAUSE she’s a female. I was simply speaking to that point. If she’s really more qualified than McGarity, I’m all for taking a look at her. I don’t see how she is, but that’s beside the point.
Still, there are going to be some major issues with the coaches and fans of a major football school being willing to accept a female AD. I’m all for gender equality, but not if it is going to be any kind of hindrance for the success of UGA athletics, and especially not if the motivation in hiring a female is for Dr. Adams to feel good about himself. The point of this hire should be to make UGA as dominant as possible across the board in athletics, particularly in football, basketball and baseball.

I would like to see Steve Dennis get an interview. Starting defensive back in ‘76-’77, and has been AD at Troy for a number of years. Grew up with him in Macon, a straight arrow, although I think he did get slightly caught up in Pat Dye/Auburn fiasco many years ago.

Carla Williams would be an excellent choice. She would be the best hire independent of the “political correctness” so many of you are using as her only qualification. She is tough, ethical, hard working, and bleeds red and black. She has functioned in just about every capacity – player, coach, and administrator. She understands the enormity of the job and strives for success. She would have no trouble and has not had trouble working with her male colleagues. She has their respect.

I think Mark B’s qoute was what Bill Clinton said to the Selective Service.
I have complained forever about UGA’s ethnic diversity and I think Mrs. williams could help with that area, but not sure she is ready to be incharge of the UGA Athletic Department and deal with the Good ole Boy UGAAA.
I do think the Dawgs should cast a really wide net in their search process.

Well, let’s see, where on earth do I begin. Ah yes, now that UGA fans got what they’ve wanted for years, what’s next? I can almost guarantee Williams won’t get it, I’d bet my five year UGA degree on that. McGarity, hmm, can’t say he’d get it either. I think his name as a possibility just to stir things up. Sort of like what the GOP did with Palin. So, who’s left? Well, Mr. UGA President, they backed you into a corner last time, look’s like they’re trying to lay it on you this time! Vince Dooley’s name just had to appear…overtime isn’t worthy of this stuff. Bradley and I are feeding off the same emotions!

I’d look to the top 5 programs as far as the Cup standings go over the last year, and try and get someone out of the SEC if possible, like Florida Director or Asst, it hurts a competitor, then maybe after that look at FSU or Stanford’s Director or Assist Dir. Seems Georgia’s been more into breaking social barriers than hiring the best candidate, many feel it should have been the Florida Dir last time, hindsight, he’s had the best football program over last 5 years.

2010 20th
2009 18th
2008 10th
2007 12th
2006 9th
2005 7th
2004 5th
Also, Georgia is now the ONLY team in the SEC East to not have a champion in baseball, basketball, or football since 1992.
We need a proven winner. Get a Stanford Dir or Assist in here.
