Carla Williams (right) could well be Georgia's next AD. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)
Georgia is again in the market for an athletics director, and it’s safe to assume Vincent J. Dooley won’t be riding to the rescue. (Michael F. Adams would rather eat a charbroiled rat than turn to Dooley.) There seem two logical candidates. Both are Georgia natives and UGA, and one of them a UGA employee. The two:
Greg McGarity: He’s from Athens. He played tennis under Dan Magill at UGA. He worked his way up the athletics department chain of command under Dooley. He left in 1992 to become an assistant AD at Florida, and he’s now Jeremy Foley’s chief aide. He’s wildly popular among Georgia fans, and his background of having worked under two of the best in the business — Dooley and Foley — would make him the odds-on favorite. Except for this:
Adams is still Georgia’s president. McGarity was viewed as a likely successor to Dooley back in 2004 but wasn’t hired. The thinking then was that he was viewed by Adams as a Dooley loyalist.
It’s possible that, six years later, the president has softened his anti-Dooley stance. It’s also possible he hasn’t. In which case, the leading candidate would be …
Carla Williams: She’s from LaGrange. She played basketball (as Carla Green) at Georgia under Andy Landers. She has a PhD from Florida State. She has worked as an assistant AD at Vanderbilt. She has worked at UGA as assistant AD since 2004 and has been regarded as a rising star in the nation’s second-most profitable athletics department.
It was Adams who, with Damon Evans in 2004, appointed the first African-American AD in SEC history. Williams would be the first female athletics director the conference has seen and would surely meet with in-house approval.
My guess: Carla Williams.

Carla will be an outstanding AD. She is very professional and super hard working. She has really been a worker behind the scenes and she deserves this postion. UGA should be honored to have her serve this university as their AD.

sure sounded like Vince, but I think he’s classy and smart enough not to make any statements prior to something official coming out of Athens.
He would bring back instant credibility to an athletic department that could use it at the moment.
Maybe this is the beginning of the end for Dr Adams as well.

Its time to hire someone on the outside and clean up the mess at UGA. UGA needs to get back on the front page of the sports page with Championships. Money is great but its time to get competent people in control to win championships and recruit players with character and quit recruiting thugs. Get back to playing college football at Sanford Stadium instead of vulgar hip hop rap concerts.

Wow, I bet the Dawgs see alot of red panties at games this fall, stupid AD Evans and his selfishness. I have friends who are Dawg fans, and I really feel for them, for all Dawg fans. Hang tough Dawg fans, there has to be a positive to this somewhere.

UGA needs to hire an AD outside of the program. Too much inbreeding is part of UGA’s problem. Like when Alabama has hung up on hiring only head coaches that played or coached on the Bear.

I’m betting on Carla Williams. Adams is all about political correctness and what would be more politically correct than a black female. You can book it.

Get Dave Braine, he messed up GT so bad with these long term contracts with Hewitt and Gailey, we’re still paying. If he came to UGA, he’d give long time contracts to the water boy.

it’s just amazing that a man seemingly capable of running an athletic department at a major university could also be capable of such bad judgement.
“paint the town red” and “hairy dog” have whole new connotations now.

It’s brainless twerps like “Mr. Cox” that provide proof that there are still simpleminded, dimwitted racists running around among the enlightened.
The fact that one would think that Evans was an “affirmative action” selection, simply because he is black, is in itself racist. Evans, even with all of his character flaws that have now surfaced, EARNED the job as UGA’s AD. He made the transition from student/athlete to administrative executive in impressive fashion and was doing a pretty good job before last week.
I don’t know if Williams would be a better choice than McGarity, or vise versa. Folks much smarter — and more well paid — than me will make that call. But to think that if Williams is selected it would simply be an “affirmative action” pick, is shortsighted at best, ignorant at worst.
Mr. Cox, and those who think like him, should think about coming out from their mothers’ basements.

Let’s make the right choice and get McGarity!!!! We already reached with Evans and you see where it got us! Maybe Adams needs to go if he can’t see that! Afterall, why is he not being held responsible for hiring Evans? Not to mention his fingerprints on some of the other bad hires!

I prefer McGarity, he seems like he has a record of success. ButCarla Williams seems qualified. She is an athlete, she has a PHD, and worked at Vandy. I like them both.

Mr.Cox is an idiot,,,,if you think Evans would have gotten the job if he wasn’t black, you’re only kidding yourself.
He was hired because it made UGA look progressive. That’s why the next AD will be the black female.
It’s all about appearance now in Athens. Ability to get the job done has nothing to do with it..

For why Dooley dislikes Adams and his cronies, just read this book if you can find it in the bookstores. Rich Whitt- “Behind the Hedges: Big Money and Power Politics at the University of Georgia’’. I have a feeling Dr. Adams has his soldiers to buy up the books from the metro ATL/ Athens area so no one can read it.

went on our site and looked at the responsibilities and experience of Dr. Williams and was very impressed. Actually, on paper she is more qualified than Damon was when he got the job. Then went on their website and looked at McGarity’s background and experience. They don’t print nearly the bio on their people, but the short paragraph indicates his job scope is very encompassing in all kinds of directions. Does anyone have any insight on their intangables…and connections…and coach selecting abilities?
