Carla Williams (right) could well be Georgia's next AD. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)
Georgia is again in the market for an athletics director, and it’s safe to assume Vincent J. Dooley won’t be riding to the rescue. (Michael F. Adams would rather eat a charbroiled rat than turn to Dooley.) There seem two logical candidates. Both are Georgia natives and UGA, and one of them a UGA employee. The two:
Greg McGarity: He’s from Athens. He played tennis under Dan Magill at UGA. He worked his way up the athletics department chain of command under Dooley. He left in 1992 to become an assistant AD at Florida, and he’s now Jeremy Foley’s chief aide. He’s wildly popular among Georgia fans, and his background of having worked under two of the best in the business — Dooley and Foley — would make him the odds-on favorite. Except for this:
Adams is still Georgia’s president. McGarity was viewed as a likely successor to Dooley back in 2004 but wasn’t hired. The thinking then was that he was viewed by Adams as a Dooley loyalist.
It’s possible that, six years later, the president has softened his anti-Dooley stance. It’s also possible he hasn’t. In which case, the leading candidate would be …
Carla Williams: She’s from LaGrange. She played basketball (as Carla Green) at Georgia under Andy Landers. She has a PhD from Florida State. She has worked as an assistant AD at Vanderbilt. She has worked at UGA as assistant AD since 2004 and has been regarded as a rising star in the nation’s second-most profitable athletics department.
It was Adams who, with Damon Evans in 2004, appointed the first African-American AD in SEC history. Williams would be the first female athletics director the conference has seen and would surely meet with in-house approval.
My guess: Carla Williams.

Do many WM’s have ‘issues’ with BF’s in positions of authority? Obviously, several on this board do, finding it impossible or implausible that only affirmative action is at play.
Don’t worry guys. You’re alone.
Your flaw is well-documented in business school teaching on organizational behavior.
Ease up and get with the program.

What’s next for Damon Evans after he leaves UGA? I hope he saved his $$$, because he probably won’t ever see that kind of salary again. Must suck big-time to go from making 500k to 0, especially the embarrassingly way he went about it.

Adams main reason for hating Vince is purely political.
Vince had more power & pull than did the president of the University. His popularity amongst the fan base gave him support and free reign on making decisions. Not a good situation to be in if your the president. If Adams & Vince ever disagreed; Vince automatically received the fan support; no matter the issue. Adams has succeeded in being the figurehead of the university now and the person wilding the most power; as it should be in my opinion.
With that being said, I think you are right Chip; Adams appoints Carla Williams as AD b/c she is less experienced and Adams will continue to be able to “pull the strings” with all decisions made with regards to the University.

Jaw Dawg … I agree completely about Steve Dennis. I grew up with him in Macon and he was always a straight arrow. Won’t find much support for him on this forum tho, not many of these folks are familiar with players pre-Herschel era. I hope he at least gets an interview.

Why does everyone think that just b/c you played for / coached / or covered UGA, you would be qualified to be the AD. Some of the names suggested on here are laughable. Stick with the people that have experience.

Outsider looking in….How many AD’s have you hired, you moron ?
Steve Dennis would be a good choice, but he’ll never get it because he’s a white male.
Same reason McGarrity won’t get it.
Do you seriously think Evans was the best choice for the job when he got it ? He got it for one reason….the color of his skin.

McGarity will want more than $550,000 to leave a primo job at UF to take the job at UGA and work under the dictator Adams, who mainly wants a yes man who will suck up to him for any big decisions. McGarity has it made in Gainesville, so uga will have to put up some major cash to get him. Plus, if they don’t hire a minority, the African-Americans in Atlanta will be very angry.

Greg McGarity would be a great choice. He worked hard during his time at UGA and comes from a wonderful family with strong Georgia and Athens roots. But, it will be Williams. The only reason Evans got the job was so Michael Adams could say he hired the first black AD in the SEC and he will pull the same thing for the notoriety of hiring the first female AD in the Conference.

Lets cut out all the B.S. we need the most qualified person for the job, and dosen’t necessarily mean hiring someone that KNOWS uga sports o.k. As far as Adams and Dooley are concerned. Both men have the Me Me Me mentality. Very narcicisstic men. Impossible for them to get along. But that being said. I truly believe that Adams has too much power. And he is too politically correct for my stomach. Evans got the AD job in the first place because Adams could control him. And if that is what he wants then he is going to get a person who is not going to be able to have an independant thought about how things should be done. I for one cannot stand this type of a University President much less any type of control freak. It is not good for business nor the people that surround the sort. Get ride of Adams if we really want to improve.

All those TV talking heads dissing ATL as a bad sports town just don’t get it. This is college football country boys and girls; pure and simple.
McGarity or Williams would be great choices. Hopefully Williams will remain if McGarity is selected.

Carla Williams is a lock for the AD job—Adams would catch a lot of heat if he appoints a white male over a black female, due to diversity and affirmative action rules on campus.

I am a black man who hires people all the time. My job security depends on the competency of the people I hire. Race or gender have never been a part of the hiring equation for me. If I hire people who is not qualified for the job I will be on the outside looking in, period!
UGA had better hire the best AD and not worry about race, gender or anything else but qualifications. They need a smooth running athletic department.Don’t hire the white man because he is white and don’t hire the black woman because she is black or a woman. Hire the best administrator or you will be very, very sorry later.

Why rush to hire someone? Ask Billy Payne or Chris Welton to serve as interim AD for a yearM. Then hire the right person. The fact is long-time Athletic Admin professionals are being dinosaurs in a sector with multi-million dollar revenues. UGA should reach out to private sector to find its next AD.

Mark, good job with the article. I admire you for reading some of this stupidity. But, these are Georgia fans. MR. COX, to assume that hiring Carla Williams is affirmative action related is like assuming George W. got admitted to to Yale and was President because he was George H.W.’s son. Oh, my bad, that is true. So stupid unqualified white men get jobs too because of affirmative action? Oh, I mean “legacy clauses”.

Billy Payne!

Billy ran the olympics and would take the AD job, but at a much higher price. He’d probably want a salary of at least $1 million plus a boatload of benefits and perqs, but with his connections, he’d be worth it. Adams needs to call Billy and beg him to take the job ASAP!!!!
