Would you say, ‘Yahoo!’ to a Dallas sign-and-trade for Joe?

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that Mark Cuban, of whom you’ve heard, wants to land free-agent-to-be Joe Johnson via a sign-and-trade. This makes sense. Dwane Casey, whom the Hawks should have hired as their coach, works as an assistant for Cuban’s Dallas Mavericks, and in conversations Casey has stressed how difficult a matchup the Mavs consider Johnson.

Of greater interest (at least to me) than Cuban’s interest in Johnson is this: What Mavs would be apt to be available to the Hawks via a sign-and-trade? Dirk Nowitzki is a free agent, but he’s going to command max money himself and isn’t apt to leave Big D.  Brendan Haywood has long been mentioned by you folks as a center of interest, and he’s a free agent, too. So let’s say Joe-for-Haywood … and who else?

Jason Kidd is on the Mavs’ roster, but he makes too much and is too old (37). Jason Terry is another option, but the Hawks have been there and done that. Shawn Marion is 32 and isn’t the player he was. But there’s one more name on the Maverick manifest that intrigues the heck out of me.

Caron Butler.

I like Caron Butler a lot. (He’s 30, and he has only one year remaining on his contract, which in the NBA makes him a hugely desirable commodity.) Heck, I proposed this time a year ago that the Hawks work a sign-and-trade with Washington for Butler, sending Marvin Williams to the Wizards in exchange. And if you’re asking me if I’d be willing to consider a similar package — Joe and Marvin to Dallas for Butler and Haywood — I’d say yes.

If you want Haywood as your starting center, that means Al Horford moves to power forward and Josh Smith shifts to small forward. And Butler is a small forward, which means acquiring him would be tantamount to setting up another deal. But if you’re hiring Haywood as a backup center … well, this could work.

A frontcourt of Horfy, Josh and Butler, plus a backcourt of Jamal Crawford and Jeff Teague/Mike Bibby. That might be OK. Not NBA-title-worthy, but definitely OK.

If the hawks make the wrong (cheap) moves here they will have a lottery pick next year without having to trade for it.

Welcome back…hope all is well. As for Butler, sounds like a scenario worth pursuing. The Hawks could allow a talented, yet malcontent, player (whose regard by most Hawks fans/observers right now probably falls somewhere on the spectrum from apathy to intense loathing) the chance to pursue success elsewhere while getting a one-year ‘test drive’ of someone else.

It seems like Josh Smith is to the Hawks what Michael Vick was to the Falcons – supremely talented, but unable to put it together to achieve his potential — and almost a man “without a position.” Would the Hawks be best served to move him, rather than continue to wait for the promise of his talent to turn into the production we hope to one day see? Think about it: if we say that he’s not a ‘3′ in that he’s not a shooter, and that he’s not a ‘4′ because he lacks the offensive skill set and requisite height, then – other than exiciting and frustrating – what is he?

A unifying concept of a lot of these posts is: Where does Josh Smith fit in the lineup? And I can’t help but suggest: how about to another team?

This is an option thats definatly worth trying. I dont think Joe thinks he can win anything in Atlanta which sucks but i would much rather sign and trade than just let him go without getting anything. But if we can sign and trade joe what about a guy like David lee or better carlos boozer to put down low to strenghthen the front court. But no matter what we will have to replace Joes points to get back to the play offs. Im not sure who but some ppl are going to have to step it up on the offensive for us to have a chance.

@James…honestly, as much as I like Josh Smith (and detest him other times…lol)..I wouldn’t mind him being traded. Now saying that…let’s say JJ leaves for Dallas and ATL gets Butler and Haywood.

PG Teague
SG Crawford
SF Butler
PF Horford
C Haywood

I’m not a fan of this because Horford is an all star at center..why move him? Also, I left off Josh Smith assuming he would get traded. And Marvin Williams isn’t in my starting lineup either…that’s what…80 – 100 million dollars in 2 players? They certainly aren’t on bench, so where do they go…and what would we get back? I’m not criticizing..just simply asking. Can we trade them for a real owner??? lol

The Hawks are one of the top teams in the East as currently constituted. The only moves they should be making are ones that bring them closer to a championship level. Butler & Haywood for Joe and Marvin is hardly worth mentioning as a championship move unless it is paired with another deal that brings some serious quality to this roster.

We’ve been patient with Marvin, so let’s see if he breaks out this year (I think he’s better than Woody’s offense suggested).

I do think Joe is a goner, we just don’t have the ownership nor max money for him to stay. Don’t hate, it’s NBA business. Good luck Joe wherever you end up. Let’s get a Center in Atlanta!!

New York is out of the Joe Johnson sweepstakes he wants to play in the southwest closer to his home in Arkansas. So i think he will sign with the Hawks and then be dealt to a Texas team.

The Hawks cannot move Smith to the 3. He is a defensive/rebounding presence down low, but his outside one-on-one game is to be desired. So, by moving him to the 3, we lose rebounds and defense. Even with this aside, Smith is lacking a quality outside shot and ball handling skills to be productive offensively at the 3. Smith is a near-All Star at the 4. He would be lackluster at the 3.

As for Hayward: Is that who the Hawks really want in the long term … because a two-way S&T would likely make the Hawks commitment to Hayward 4 to 5 years.

As for Butler: I’ve always liked Butler. He can play the 2 or the 3. But what do we need more: A quality center or another 2/3?

If we could package Joe and someone else (Williams? Childress? maybe even Bibby?) for Dampier and Butler, that may be a good move.

Horford/Dampier/Pachulia
Smith/Horford/Pachulia
Butler/Williams or Childress/Evans
Crawford/Butler/Crawford/Evans
Teague/Bibby/Crawford

And considering, Butler, Dampier, and Jamal Crawford would all have expiring contracts, the Hawks would not be tied down long term. Plus, quality expiring contract guys are almost always prime mid-season trade bait.

Do a sign and trade with Joe Johnson for Devin Harris, giving the Nets a guy to dangle in front of Lebron, and the Hawks a good young PG to pair with Josh and Al. Then try and sign Ray Allen to play the two. Keeping Marvin at the three, and keeping Crawford coming off the bench.

My question is for you Mark:
Why would you as a professional in business buy a Franchise team and not attempt to put the best product out there each year?
I’m not an owner, I’m a teacher, but it just seems like a smart idea to draft smart, or as in the Celtics, Magic, Lakers, Patriots, Steelers, Chargers, Yankees, RedSox, Phillies case SPEND SOME DANG $$$ or make trades that matter. Simple right? We just made a trade, a smart trade at the draft for Crawford, got him and another pick, but instead of getting a potential decent bench big, traded that for a couple million. What is that going to get us?? I am frustrated with Hawks ownership and I support our teams, but if the ASG wants fans they need to understand what fans want. Proven winners and players. Chris Pauls, Lebrons, Amare’s, Wade’s. Why not go after him? Create space for next year for Carmelo or something. Make people want to come to the games, PLEASE!!! ATL NEEDS A WINNER AGAIN!! COULD BE ATL YEAR NEXT YEAR WITH Braves getting back right and FALCONS finally there as well.

I could see the Hawks losing Johnson and doing nothing. Just nothing. That’s how pathetic the ownership cabal is. So of course getting Hayward and Butler would be much better. I believe they could start Hayward and still get enough minutes for Butler behind Smith. They could also go small with Hayward/Pachulia/Horford, Smith and Butler. It would decrease Marvin Williams minutes (a plus) since he ain’t going nowhere (not cause of value but simply management inertia).

So close to something special. Celtics were garbage with just Paul Pierce. They made a couple of trades in one offseason and were instant contenders. We are there. I think Joe can do more than Pierce. Josh can be special and is better every year. I don’t know if Teague is there yet and Bibby is only a spot shooter and game manager other than that he can’t create anymore. Horford is solid, but besides Joe. That is it, Horford and Smith are just solid until proving otherwise. We are a significant trade away or its time for the HIGHFLYING BABIES to grow up. Its time to do something….

I think the hawks should do a couple sign and trade deals if possible. First they should do a sign and trade with dallas: joe johnson for butler and hayward and then try to do another sign and trade with the memphis grizzels: childers, josh smith, and za za for gasol and gay. Then the lineup would be as follow:

PG – teague
SG – bulter
SF – gay
PF – Hortford
C – Gasol

Bench
PG- Crawford/bibby
SG – Crawford/Evans
SF – Williams
PF – RonMon
C – Heyward

getting hayward & butler would be great . there would be plenty of minutes for horford, josh & haywood. we dont need to play anyone over 32 minutes like dopy woody did. we could play butler at sf ,have jc start at sg with teague at pg. we would have mw,jc2,zaza,mo& bibby on our bench, this bench is not bad & our 1st team is vastly improved. i like this much more than having slow ball hogging jj.

Seems people are failing to understand that Dampier represents an instant-expiring contract which makes him particularly valuable. His contract is not partially guaranteed as someone suggested… it’s not even $1 guaranteed.

One should be able to expect that a person who earns their living writing about sports might use some of their time to do some minimal research. You know, so he could seem like he’s actually worth more to his employer than any Johnny-come-lately internet writer, and seem like he’s putting in an honest day’s work. Something like that.

Dallas would never do this deal, and rightfully so. Joe Johnson is not worth Caron Butler AND Brendan Haywood. Haywood is a relatively young (for a center), 10 and 10 guy. Butler is a few years removed from being an all star. Joe Johnson for Caron Butler? I can see that one happening, but there is no way Dallas would, or should do this trade if it includes Haywood.
