"Will you still need me/feed me, if we're 64?" (AJC photo by Johnny Crawford)
Just what we need on a(nother) hot June day: A topic to make things even hotter. And here it is.
The Orlando Sentinel ranks the Georgia Bulldogs No. 64 in its preseason listings for college football 2010.
I say, channeling my inner Keanu, “Whoa.”
From Jeremy Fowler of the Sentinel, who likewise seems incredulous at his paper’s appraisal:
I have a hard time believing the Bulldogs would implode under [Mark] Richt, one of the country’s most consistent coaches who faces a crucial turning point in his career. And Georgia benefits from a down year for the SEC East. But there simply aren’t any guarantees for UGA right now.
And that’s true. There aren’t. Me, I’d be willing to err on the side of optimism for the coming season regarding Richt and his team. (Indeed, I believe I already have. I’ve said Georgia will go 9-3.) And I have a hard time envisioning any scenario that would make these Bulldogs the 64th-best team in the land. But maybe that’s just me.
The AJC sports columnist is a blogging fool. But you knew that already

That’s completely ridiculous. That’s a Florida fan’s blog masquerading as Journalism. Get real, Gator fan. We have an excellent chance to beat you this year, so you’re being cute rating as as #64.
When would that ever happen with a Mark Richt coached team, whether we beat Florida or not?

This is the same paper that didn’t know Aaron Murray was anything more than a scrub, who would try to fill-in the depth chart after Mettenberger was dismissed. In other words, those folks aren’t very well informed.

There is NO WAY a team with this experienced, veteran, deep offensive line can be that bad.
Throw in the plethora of talent at receiver and tight end (maybe the best recieving corps in the nation), and studs at RB like King and Ealy, and the Dawgs are positioned to have a VERY STRONG season as long as Murray can limit turnovers and make the plays he is supposed to make, not necessarily the great play.
As Richt would say, I am flat-out “fired up” about this team and can’t wait for the season to start.
As for the #64 ranking, I welcome it. Maybe it can be a motivational tool and maybe we can sneak up on some teams.
Sic ‘em.

I would disagree. The Orlando Sentinel is a fine publication staffed by outstanding journalists. Except for that Bianchi.
(I’m kidding about that last bit. Mike Bianchi is a fine fellow and an excellent writer.)

I love it, I hope they all pick us to suck. We certainly have tried it the other way. Preseason prognostications only serve to blow up the heads of young men or make them work harder. Bring on all the nea sayers. The more the merrier.

Most of the gaters spend most of their time reading the Ajc so they wouldn’t notice. Anyway, I don’t think an Orlando paper has much credibility. What I remember most about Orlando is the way most people in their automobiles have their windows down and are not wearing shirts. LOL at that FL TRASH. Let’s face it if you are a child molestor and/or on the run from the police Orlando or similar FL destination is top on the list.

Doesn’t make a rat’s ass where we’re rated, or by whom. You would think we Dawg fans would have learned that a couple of years ago when were ranked number one, and flopped so dismally. (Have never been as ashamed of my fellow UGA fans as I was over all that stupid-ass smack they were talking…sounded like that damn FSU scum.)
Let’s just play some FOOTBALL this year, and the damn ratings will take care of themselves.

Makes perfect sense. At the end of the day, as long as Mark Richt is coach Georgia will get no respect other than from the fan base and the religious right. His peers envy his players talent and have disdain for his coaching ability.

I think the whole concept of calling any conference or division within a conference “down” in the preseason is pretty stupid. We never know the story until it’s all said and done on who is up and who is down. That said, some people say UGA’s success under Richt only came in years when the SEC East (and SEC overall) was “down”. Does that mean the SEC is only “up” when Florida, Tennessee, LSU, or Alabama are winning the championships? Last time I checked, all SEC teams play an 8 game conference schedule and we have overtime rules so someone is going to win and someone is going to lose. The point of the season is to find out who wins the most games. Teams who win enough to compete for the conference championship are “up” and those with >.750 records are “down”. Perhaps the years when UGA played for the SEC and/or finished Top 10 were years that they were “up” rather than the SEC/SEC East being “down”.
Heck, I could spin that UF has only won MNCs because UGA has been “down” since Dooley retired. UF has benefit from a “down” UGA for the past 20+ years.

Seems about right. UGA just came off a bad season, they have a freshman QB who hasnt played a real game in over a year, and they have a completely new defense. I dont know why any of you think anyone outside of Georgia and SEC country would rank this team very high. They may completely prove everyone wrong but it doesnt look that good from the outside right now.

that’s great… we had a bad year.. still won a bowl game.. which would rate a good year at most schools.. we should be slight under DAWGS against SC and ARK… so that’s a motivator… LOVE our new DDDeeee coaches… only ???? is a talented but young QB.. Big O LINE, TB’s, TE’s. A+ kickers… Go Dawgs !!!

The Orlando Sentinel is a fine publication staffed by outstanding journalists, none of whom is perfect. And, after their previous, error-wrecked “hot seat,” piece, and now this one, they pretty much have no credibility to comment on prognosticate on UGA football. Them’s the facts as I see ‘em.

By the way, if you read the comments section, even the comments IN the Gators blog, most FLORIDA fans think that is ridiculous.
Actually, this is a really, really GOOD THING. Instead of black jerseys and helmets this year, I think Mark Richt should blow this article up and put it up in the locker room so Georgia players can see what a Florida writer thinks about them in 2010.

The Sentinel has a solid staff, breaks some good stories, is pretty entertaining, and isn’t beholden to any one team. (Kinda like the AJC although some of you — who keep coming back here despite your misgivings — will disagree).
That said, boy did they whiff if they said UGA was only the 64th best team in the nation. Then again, what do I know? I’d be a millionaire if 23 was the magic number in blackjack.

GA is a popular under-acheiver pick this yr. it’s sort of a band wagon thing as i see it. eveyone wants to be the one to say they saw it coming. we’ll see come bowl season how things shape out. i’m happy to be “under the radar”, we seem to crush under national pre-season exposure, (see 2008 season). and i agree w/ mr. Fowler and mr. Bradley, richt is way too good for that big a drop off.

I have a scenario where we suck. Mark Richt resumes his Mr. Magoo act. Players resume acting like thugs and play like they did under Willie Martinez. I don’t foresee any of the aforementioned, but there is your scenario.

Georgia won 8 games last year.
The defense coaching has been upgraded
Regression to the mean suggests the turnover ratio will improve
Aaron Murray is a better athlete, stronger arm, quicker release than previous QB (who I respected for his efforts)
All the young players who saw significant action should be better
Schedule should be somewhat easier
Therefore I think 9 wins is a no-brainer, 10 despite growing pains, 11 doable
Also Texas Pete made some good points. For those who claim Richt’s SEC titles came when the conference was “down,” you could just as logically argue the same with UF and Bama, since Auburn, Tennessee, and Georgia have not been as good as usual.

Btw, anyone who thinks that the Sentinel sucks up to Urban Meyer needs to have a chat with Jeremy Fowler, who felt the wrath of he-who-speaks-of-himself-in-third-person. Meyer actually threatened to “ban” reporters from the Orlando paper from UF practices until he came to his senses.
All that was missing by Meyer was “I’m a man, I’m 45″

People, this was a tactical placement of UGA by Mr. Fowler. This is the same reporter who got humiliated by Meyer back in spring ball, which was exhaustedly replayed by ESPN. This is a small payback to Meyer in the form of some BILBOARD MATERIAL for the DAWGS.

The Orlando Sentinel is not a “Gator fishwrap”…Georgia fans…. with Fowler being a FSU supporter (and the one Meyer almost punched out at practice) and Bianchi being a big time the “U” supporter and a regular trasher of the Gator program. So the Sentinel ranking Georgia #64 has nothing to do with them being pro-Gators….they aren’t. But picking Georgia #64 shows just how stupid Fowler and Bianchi really are when it comes to college football. What a joke. Georgia is a top 10 team next year if Murray and that new 3-4 “D” play well. Georgia’s running game is going to be one of the best in the nation…period. But Alabama will rule the SEC again this year I am afraid….with Florida not too far behind them. Gators return to rule in 2011 however.

I am glad that that is only the Orlando Sentiniel that is saying that. The Orlando Sentiniel doesn’t mean anything here. I believe that this will be a good year for the Dawgs with the new Defensive Coaching Staff. If the Dawgs does very well on Defensive, I have them winning the SEC East. No doubt about it.
