Washaun Ealey's Bulldogs will again run this state. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
It’s time — actually, it’s a week past due — for our annual Memorial Day college football predictions, and I begin with a word in my defense: I actually got a few things right the last time around. I said Georgia Tech would go 10-2 and win the ACC, which it did. I said Georgia would lose four games, inducing many among you to cast aspersions; the Bulldogs actually lost five games. Against that cheery backdrop, we begin:
• Georgia will go 9-3 but will finish third in the SEC East. Todd Grantham represents an upgrade. Given time, Aaron Murray will represent an upgrade. Thing is, the Bulldogs’ second game is in Columbia, and that seems a bridge too far. (More precisely, a bridge too soon.) The guess is that Georgia will be rolling come November, but that Sept. 11 loss — and one the next week against Arkansas in Athens — will keep the Bulldogs from a true breakthrough.
• Georgia’s true breakthrough? That comes in 2011.
• South Carolina will likewise lose three SEC games. It will shade Georgia in the East standings on the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Gamecocks will lose to Auburn, Alabama and Florida.
• Florida will go 11-1 because of a remarkably kind schedule. The Gators play four road games: Two against teams (Tennessee and Florida State) with new coaches and one against Vanderbilt. The Gators will lose in Tuscaloosa on Oct. 2, but they’ll see Alabama again.
• Florida will beat Alabama for the SEC title. Just one of my dumb hunches. Like the one that told me Texas would beat the Tide for the BCS crown. And the Longhorns would have except for Mack Brown’s SHOVEL PASS! (Don’t get me started.) (Alas, too late.)
• Don’t get me wrong: Alabama will be outstanding. But I recall the 2008 BCS titlist going undefeated in the regular season and losing beneath the Georgia Dome. I don’t believe the Tide in 2010 will be any better than the Gators were in 2009. And I do believe it’s tough to go through the SEC unbeaten twice in succession.
• Florida will beat a Big Ten representative for the BCS title. I’m tempted to pick the Big Ten rep, but I’ve seen that game before. I know how it ends.
• The Big Ten rep will not be Ohio State. It will be Iowa. Ask Paul Johnson about the Hawkeyes.
• Tim Tebow will win the Heisman Trophy. Whoops. Force of habit. Case Keenum — Houston QB — will win the Heisman Trophy.
• Boise State will go 11-1 but will be remembered for the “1,” not the “11.” The Broncos play Virginia Tech in Washington D.C. on Sept. 6. That’s a Labor Day “L.”
• The ACC Coastal will be the nation’s toughest division. There’s not a great team therein, but there are four good ones. Miami will be the disappointment. North Carolina will be the surprise. Virginia Tech will win the division. And Georgia Tech …
• … will finish third. I yield to no one in my esteem for Joshua Nesbitt, who had a busy offseason. (He had surgery and added two vowels to his first name.) But I cannot believe a team that bid adieu to four NFL draftees early will be quite as good. (Didn’t Georgia suffer a bit without Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno?) The Jackets will lose three road conference games: At North Carolina, at Clemson, at Virginia Tech.
• Florida State will win the ACC Atlantic. By default.
• Under Derek Dooley, Tennessee will win its final four games. The Vols will, however, lose six of their first eight.
• Southern Cal will finish fifth in the Pac-10. Lane Kiffin: Money for nothing and quips for free.
• Georgia will beat Georgia Tech. A.J. Green will catch the winning touchdown pass from Murray with 41 seconds remaining. The score will be 27-24. Paul Johnson will suppress the urge to punch somebody in the face.

the loss of tebow, and defensive coach charlie strong will be huge for the gators in 2010!
the winner of the uga/usc game will decide the SEC EAST!
ARKANSAS will be a wanna bee, with little or no defense and a qb who is slow and stationary!
the dawg season will rest with the defense and the o/line! if the dawgs can successfully run the ball, it could be a monster year!

Mark, no way the Jackets don’t win 10 games this year and play in the BCS. They are just reloading, and CPJ is THE BEST COACH IN NCAAs. We will run the ACC and maybe lose one game, and we will destroy UGA, 44 to 24 in an offensive shoot out. Mark it down and take it to the bank. The yellow and black will be heading to ANOTHER New Year’s Day bowl and be wearing a crown by January. No way we lose to Georgia. The stupid dogs can’t stand up against CPJ and our offensive machine.

I did the math on this, and my jackets win 12 games. When Coach Johnson spoke at the Bejing Kick-off Club this Spring, he promised us that we would beat the bulldogs like Mao beat the Nationalist. Can’t wait for ping pong, chess and football seasons to get started. Go Jackets!

Coming of a disappoint season, and with a rookie QB, it will be tough going 9-3 for Georgia. However, I think it very logical to think they will. Tech has more talent overall, but they lost some good players to the NFL. I also go with the 9-3 record, beating North Carolina again.

1) If Ugag loses that many games with a creampuff schedule, Richt will most definitely be on the hot seat. There’s nothing on the slate worth mentioning besides Florida and Tech.
2) Tech might lose 3 (Out of 14), but no way Dumbo Dabo comes up with something to out smart Paul Johnson. Tech beats Clempsun again.
3) If complete failure of a DC Todd “I got fired from my only DC job” Grantham is an upgrade for the Clarke County Penal Team, what is Al Groh on the Flats?? A complete 180 would even seem too light of a term.
4) Tech wins ACC again. UNC/VPI are extremely overrated again. So is Free Shoes U.
5) Uga might win 10 and make something other than the Weedeater Bowl, but for Heaven’s sake who shouldn’t win 10 with that piss poor schedule?!? Unfortunately, I think they finish 2nd in their division rather easily. Tenn, SC, UK and Vandy are not too good.
6) Case Keenum as Heisman? Nice attempt at trying to be different. Surprised you didn’t pick Herschel, with personality number 601 still eligible. Why not try Terrelle Pryor?
Tech will beat UGA then lose the next 3 years to them

Tech will be better…No doubt..It doesn’t matter if they lost four guys to the NFL. The defense was terrible!! They can only get better and they will. They may have a bad defense but it will still be better as a whole without derrick morgan. The offense is gonna be better if the offensive line performs at least as well as last year. Anthony Allen is better than Dwyer. Stephen Hill will not be as good as thomas but will still be a deep threat and the A-backs will get more involved with short passes.
TECH will win the ACC and win the Orange bowl. But they will lose two games..
PS UNC gets wayyy too much credit…Their offense is garbage…and their NFL talented defense is good but not great

Mark – just as you were about the perfect call blunder being corrected – you are so wrong on so many predictions here. Had Georgia played the Gamecocks the first week, we might lose, but with a game under his belt, Murryay should be fine and we squeak one out. I see you are an arrogant, know-it-all, type “A” personality using UGA (with your asinine predictions, knowing they will piss your largest slice of readership off, to drum up traffic), for rabid dogs bite back readily. Have I about nailed it? Thought so.

Mark,
I have to say 2011 for the Bulldogs is now. They have a true test early in the season when they play the Gamecocks but they will squeeze that one out barely. The Dawgs have a really strong shot of being 8-0 going into the Florida game and I say the Dawgs win by 3 on that one. The other game that will be close is the Auburn game. All I am saying is that the Dawgs have a strong shot of running the table this year. They will go at least 11-1.

How can you pick UF to win the NC with no returning offense? There is noone on the team that carried the ball more than 8 times a game last year.Deonte Thompson is good, but Rainey and Demps just don’t scare me. Demps is the most overrated player in the world. Those backs are all just OK. I just don’t see how you would pick them over Ingram and Richardson. Besides that, you can’t just run QBdraws anymore. How easy do you think it’s gonna be to plug in a pro style offense year 1? Gator fans, who do you think is gonna score for you this season?

A couple things. Not sure why AJC Bloggers feel the need to put UGA and GT in the same posting just to start a flame war BUT…
A) Georgia will be good, but not great. I like the prediction of 3 or 4 losses, although I do believe one will be against tech. They have a good core of Offensive Linemen back to protect the young Murray. But people are going to forget he’s a (albeit redshirt) freshman and expect him to be excellent after 2 games. It just doesn’t happen like that.
B)Tech will get BETTER on offense, despite losing their B-Back and top WR. Anthony Allen is better suited as a B-Back, although he was used as an A-Back last year. Critics will say “if that’s the case why oh why was Dwyer in at all”… Here is my take : PJ had Dwyer and Allen, and while Allen showed more flashes of brilliance IMO, Dwyer got the nod at B-Back because he didn’t have the flexibility Allen did at playing both positions. It will be a push on defense. Even though you lost Burnett and Morgan, you get Cooper Taylor (I think is his name) and switch to a (hopefully) more stout 3-4. So, + on offense. = on defense. What am I missing mark.

A REBUTTAL OF “SIMPLE DAWGS” STATEMENT EARLIER(PAGE ONE)
I look at Georgia’s schedule and see 11 teams we should beat…..and 1 we could beat, but haven’t in a while. HA! HAAHAAHAHAAA…….WHAT KIND OF CRACK ARE YOU SMOKING? ARE YOU SERIOUS? READ BELOW, MY COMMENTS TO YOUR GIBBERISH ARE NATURALLY IN BOLD.
The Dawgs will not lose to the Warrior Chickens…..they still have Stephen Garcia and no offense line. MAYBE YOU DAWG FANS SHOULD READ. SPURRIER IS SO DISAPPOINTED IN GARCIA THAT HE MAY BE STARTING ANOTHER QB IN THE FALL. BUT, GENERALLY THE SAME OFFENSIVE LINE THAT ATTEMPTED 53 PASSES AGAINST YOU LAST YEAR, COMPLETED ALMOST 60% OF THEM…AND RAN FOR OVER 100 YARDS. YOU DONT DO THAT WITH A POOR OFFENSIVE LINE. LOSS #1 FOR THE PUPPIES. PS FOLKS….SPURRIER IS GOING TO THE SEC TITLE GAME THIS YEAR.
The Hogs may have a great QB, but he can’t complete passes from his back. FUNNY…THEY SCORED 41 ON YOU A YEAR AGO. HE THREW FOR OVER 400 YARDS.I BET THEY ARE SAYING THE SAME THING ABOUT YOUR QB…..LOSS #2 FOR THE POOR PUPPIES….AND ITS NOT GOING TO BE PRETTY. PETRINO IS TIRED OF BEING 3RD FIDDLE IN THE SEC AND HE IS A COLLEGE FOOTBALL OFFENSIVE GENIUS. TERRIBLE MAN….BUT, A GENIUS NONETHELESS.
The Vowels will be a mess this year, and hopefully someone has talked about the naked bootleg and the drag patterns that we couldn’t recognize last year. AGREED.
Kentucky will be more like Kentucky of years past.WE’LL SEE.
Vandy will be more Mandy than Randy.TRUE.
Miss State is still years away from being good. BULLCRAP DUDE. THAT STATEMENT MAKES YOU A FLIPPING IDIOT. DID YOU WATCH THEM AT ALL LAST YEAR? YES EVERYONE, I CALLED HIM AN IDIOT. THREE STUPID STATEMENTS IN ONE POSTING QUALIFIES YOU. THEY ARE CLOSER THAN YOU THINK. GA WINS IN OVERTIME.
Awbarn will be good, but the Dawgs should still beat them….better talent, and more of it. LOSS #3 FOR THE DOGS. CHIZIK WILL HAVE HIS PRETTY MUCH EQUALLY TALENTED SQUAD PRIMED AND READY.
Colorado has become a joke under Dan Hawkins….the once mighty Buffaloes have become a WAC team.AGREED. BUT POSSIBLY A PAC 10 TEAM.
UL-Lafayette and Idaho….ENOUGH SAID.
…and then the Gators and Tech. YOU BEAT THE GATORS. THATS RIGHT DAWG FANS, YOU ARE GOING TO BEAT MEYER AND HIS GATORS THIS YEAR. GOTTA GET LUCKY EVERY ONCE IN A BLUE-DAWG MOON.
History says we win one and lose one…….GIT lost too much talent and history repeats….Florida has a lot of good players, but just maybe we get them this year.
ALLRIGHT FOLKS. LISTEN AND LISTEN GOOD.
TECH LOST DWYER. HOWEVER, TECH MOVES ANTHONY ALLEN TO B-BACK(RUNNING BACK FOR THE IDIOTS WHO DONT UNDERSTAND THE TERMINOLOGY) AND THE TALENT DROP IS MUCH, MUCH LESS THAN MANY THINK..IF ANY. THATS RIGHT, IF ANY.. ALLEN AVERAGED OVER 9 YARDS PER CARRY LAST YEAR, AND B-BACK IS HIS NATURAL POSITION—6 FT TALL AND 231 LBS. WE ARE LOADED AT A BACK. REMEMBER RODDY JONES DAWG LOVERS? HE IS COMPLETELY HEALTHY THIS YEAR.
TECH LOSES BEBE THOMAS. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN….MEET MR. HILL. HE WILL BE EVEN BETTER THAN DEMARYIUS AT THE END OF THE YEAR. HE IS FASTER, JUST AS BIG AND HAS BETTER HANDS.
TECH LOSES BURNETT AND MORGAN ON DEFENSE. WE KEPT EDWARDS, REESE, TARRANT, TAYLOR(BACK FROM INJURY),REID, BARNES IN THE SECONDARY AND KEPT EVERYONE ELSE IMPORTANT ON THE LINE/LINEBACKERS. SHIFTING TO THE SAME DEFENSE AS THE PUPPIES AND WE HAVE A NFL/COLLEGE PRO IN AL GROH COACHING IT. THIS IS HIS SPECIALITY AND COME NOVEMBER HE WILL SHOW MR. GRANTHAM EXACTLY HOW ITS DONE WHEN TECH WINS 38-17 AGAINST YOU GUYS IN YOUR OWN BACK YARD.
GEORGIA TECH LOSES NO GAMES THIS YEAR. PERIOD. OUR CLOSEST GAME IS VA TECH, WE WIN BY 3, TAKE THE ACC CHAMPIONSHIP AND RETURN TO THE BCS WHERE CPJ WILL FINALLY WIN HIS FIRST BCS BOWL AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST!!!!! WE ARE NOT LOSING TO UNC—UMM, THAT PERFECT DEFENSE OF THIERS…..WE COMPLETELY TRASHED THE SAME DEFENSE LAST YEAR…..ITS OUR REVENGE YEAR ON MIAMI, AND THERE WILL BE A REPEAT OF 08 WHEN THEY COME TO TOWN…..CLEMSON LOST C.J. SPILLER AND HAS NO SINGLE PLAYER WHO CAN COME CLOSE TO FILLING HIS SHOES….WE WILL DESTROY S.C.STATE, THEN KANSAS, BEAT UNC BY 10, WALK OVER NCSU, WFU AND UVA, DESTROY MIDDLE TENN, BEAT CLEMSON BY 14, REST A WEEK, PLAY OUR HEARTS OUT VS VA. TECH AND WIN A THRILLER, THROTTLE MIAMI BY 14, DEMOLISH DUKE, AND THEN THE PUPPY BEATING BEGINS. WE BEAT FSU FOR THE ACC CHAMPIONSHIP RANKED #2 AND ON TO THE BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!
TWO INTANGIBLES…..
1). CPJ. THE MAN HAS BALLS THE SIZE OF GEORGIA. NO DOUBT, NO LIE, AND YOU DAWG FANS ONLY WISH THAT RICHT WAS ANYTHING LIKE THE MAN.
2) JOSHUA NESBITT….AN AMAZING QB. HAS A HEART THAT WONT QUIT AND REFUSES TO STOP RUNNING AND STOP TRYING. YOU DAWG FANS…ANY OF YOU FANS….ONLY WISH YOU HAD HIM. WITNESS THE NEXT COMING OF VINCE YOUNG, IT IS GOING TO BE ONE HELL OF A SENIOR SEASON.
AND MARK BRADLEY, FOR SHAME ON YOU PICKING TECH TO LOSE FOUR…..THEY ARENT WORSE OFF BECAUSE OF THE TALENT THEY LOST….THEY ARE BETTER FOR IT. THEY HAVE PLENTY OF PROVEN TALENT WAITING IN THE WINGS, AND ITS TIME TO PITCH, OPTION AND ROLL RAMBLIN WRECK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DARE YOU TO TAKE THIS BET MR. BRADLEY….IF WHAT I SAID ABOVE PANS OUT AND TECH WINS THE NC, I GET TO WRITE A BLOG IN JANUARY WHEN I AM NOT SO HYPED UP ON CAFFIENE AND YOU HAVE TO POST IT. COME ON, ANSWER ME, I KNOW YOU READ UP ON YOUR COMMENTS.

He was fired on January 11, 2008 after the 2007 season with the Brown’s defense ranking 25th against the pass, 27th against the run, and 30th in total-yards-against among 32 teams.

Here are some tibbits on Groh…..
In the 2007 preseason, Groh was listed among the five worst coaches in college football by Sports Illustrated columnist Stewart Mandel. [7] However, after Groh’s 2007 Cavaliers lost their first game at Wyoming, they won their next seven games and started 4–0 in the ACC. After Virginia won their ninth game of 2007, Stewart Mandel stated “there’s no question he’s gotten every ounce out of that team,” and revisited his preseason column by stating “I ended up going with Groh, and obviously he’s the one who’s most proven it wrong.” The team finished the regular season 9–3 overall and 6–2 in the ACC, leading to the Cavaliers’ fifth bowl game in the past six seasons. Subsequent to the regular season, Groh was voted the 2007 ACC Coach of the Year by the ACC Media Association.
Since Groh’s arrival at Virginia, 13 Cavaliers have been selected in the NFL Draft, while 19 others have signed pro contracts as free agents. During his first five years, Groh maintained a strategy of hiring young, ambitious assistants, and he hoped to build a network of protégés through the football ranks. His young assistants have gone on to become head coaches at other Division I-A programs (Ron Prince at Kansas State, Al Golden at Temple and Mike London in the Division I-AA University of Richmond also after the 2009 season London replaced Groh as UVA’s head football coach) and Danny Rocco, who left Groh’s staff after the 2005 season to become head coach at I-AA Liberty University. A number of assistants have also gone into the ranks of assistants in the NFL (Bill Musgrave, previously with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Washington Redskins, now at the Atlanta Falcons, and Mike London at the Houston Texans before returning to Groh’s staff and then taking the Richmond job.)
Virginia under Groh has a 3–2 record in bowl games, with the two losses coming to Fresno State in the 2004 MPC Computers Bowl and Texas Tech in the 2008 Gator Bowl. The Cavaliers defeated West Virginia and Pittsburgh in the 2002 and 2003 Continental Tire Bowls and Minnesota in the 2005 Music City Bowl.

MORE FUN PRE-DAWN FACTS…….
THIS ABOUT THE SEC, ACC, TECH AND GEORGIA……..
In 1932, Georgia Tech and Georgia were two of the original 13 charter members of the Southeastern Conference. Georgia Tech would continue its membership until 1964 after Tech Coach Bobby Dodd began a historic feud with Alabama Coach Bear Bryant. Georgia Tech left the SEC concerning the allocation of scholarships and student athlete treatment. Georgia Tech would later attempt re-entry but the re-entry was eventually voted down. The biggest opponent of Georgia Tech’s re-entry was Georgia…..

S Caro–7-2
Ark 5-0
Auburn 4-0
16-2 aganst those 3 teams.
Only question on schedule is Florida, he’s 2-7 there. Gets a win every 4 or 5 years, probably looking at 2011 or 2012 before Richt wins in Florida again.
Florida will lose to #1 ranked Alabama, so if they lose 1 more SEC game to LSU, South Carolina, or if Georgia beats them, then Georgia gets in, even with a loss to Florida.

Mr. Bradley forgets that Cooper Taylor, the

I understand 1 loss against Florida on Georgia’s schedule. That’s automatic–they’re out of Georgia’s league. But where else does Georgia lose?
I guess people are thinking 1-2 more losses will come from Arkansas or Auburn or South Carolina or Georgia Tech. I don’t think so. He’s 24-3 against these 4 teams, I don’t see any of them being a complete team enough to beat Georgia. South Carolina has no offensive balance–no running game, Arkansas/Auburn/Ga Tech can’t play defense.
Arkansas/Auburn/South Carolina are still trying to win the SEC passing the ball. You won’t do that. Georgia has been doing the same thing until the last few games last year they started running the ball.

Georgia had a good recruiting season, but the wheels will come off as usual. Since the Jackets’ favorite place to play is Sanford, they’ll win again there. By the way, UGA brags about a 60-40 won-loss lead against Tech, built in the last 46 years, from being one behind in 1963.
What about Clemson’s 24-48 record against Tech? The Taggers always lose, no matter who’s coaching. Not to worry.

Meyer has beat Georgia, South Carolina & FSU easily. But he has struggled against LSU (3-2 RECORD) and Alabama (2-3 RECORD). 5-5 against those 2 teams. Meyer is also 0-2 against Auburn–should he face Auburn in the SEC Championship–but Aubrun not on schedule. He struggles against SEC West teams more than SEC East teams. Meyer is 5-7 against those 3 teams.
If you look at Meyer’s October schedule is spells trouble:
Alabama–Meyer has a losing record and was overmatched last season
LSU- Meyer is 3-2 and has a hard time beating these guys
Miss St.–It was 16-13 after 3 Qrtrs, Mullen knows Meyer well–was OC at Florida
Georgia- Meyer has destroyed Georgia, but doesn’t match up well against the 3-4 defense wut his spread
Florida will lose to at least Alabama & LSU, which means Georgia gets into the SEC Champ, even if Georgia loses to Florida. Florida will also lose to highly ranked Georgia, South Carolina or FSU.
10-3 for Florida in a rebuilding year—losses to Alabama, LSU, Georgia South Carolina or FSU.

Meyer’s schedule in 2011 is worse in october he gets:
Alabama
LSU
Auburn
Georgia
Meyer’s record against Alabama/LSU/Auburn is 5-7.
Look for Florida to go 9-4 in 2011, losing every game in October.

Florida down this year. Haden–gone. Dunlap–gone. Spikes–gone. Defense really has some issues.
Then you have to replace on the offensive side of the ball #1 rusher Tebow, and top 2 receivers Cooper and Hernanzdez. That’s a lot of offense gone.
Additional, Florida lost 4 key staff memebers, inlcuding DC Charlie Strong.
9-4 likely, 10-3 would be a great year.
