College football 2010: Georgia wins nine, Tech loses four

Washaun Ealey's Bulldogs will again run this state. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)

It’s time — actually, it’s a week past due — for our annual Memorial Day college football predictions, and I begin with a word in my defense: I actually got a few things right the last time around. I said Georgia Tech would go 10-2 and win the ACC, which it did. I said Georgia would lose four games, inducing many among you to cast aspersions; the Bulldogs actually lost five games. Against that cheery backdrop, we begin:

Georgia will go 9-3 but will finish third in the SEC East. Todd Grantham represents an upgrade. Given time, Aaron Murray will represent an upgrade. Thing is, the Bulldogs’ second game is in Columbia, and that seems a bridge too far. (More precisely, a bridge too soon.) The guess is that Georgia will be rolling come November, but that Sept. 11 loss — and one the next week against Arkansas in Athens — will keep the Bulldogs from a true breakthrough.

Georgia’s true breakthrough? That comes in 2011.

South Carolina will likewise lose three SEC games. It will shade Georgia in the East standings on the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Gamecocks will lose to Auburn, Alabama and Florida.

Florida will go 11-1 because of a remarkably kind schedule. The Gators play four road games: Two against teams (Tennessee and Florida State) with new coaches and one against Vanderbilt. The Gators will lose in Tuscaloosa on Oct. 2, but they’ll see Alabama again.

Florida will beat Alabama for the SEC title. Just one of my dumb hunches. Like the one that told me Texas would beat the Tide for the BCS crown. And the Longhorns would have except for Mack Brown’s SHOVEL PASS! (Don’t get me started.) (Alas, too late.)

Don’t get me wrong: Alabama will be outstanding. But I recall the 2008 BCS titlist going undefeated in the regular season and losing beneath the Georgia Dome. I don’t believe the Tide in 2010 will be any better than the Gators were in 2009. And I do believe it’s tough to go through the SEC unbeaten twice in succession.

Florida will beat a Big Ten representative for the BCS title. I’m tempted to pick the Big Ten rep, but I’ve seen that game before. I know how it ends.

The Big Ten rep will not be Ohio State. It will be Iowa. Ask Paul Johnson about the Hawkeyes.

Tim Tebow will win the Heisman Trophy. Whoops. Force of habit. Case Keenum — Houston QB — will win the Heisman Trophy.

Boise State will go 11-1 but will be remembered for the “1,” not the “11.” The Broncos play Virginia Tech in Washington D.C. on Sept. 6. That’s a Labor Day “L.”

The ACC Coastal will be the nation’s toughest division. There’s not a great team therein, but there are four good ones. Miami will be the disappointment. North Carolina will be the surprise. Virginia Tech will win the division. And Georgia Tech …

… will finish third. I yield to no one in my esteem for Joshua Nesbitt, who had a busy offseason. (He had surgery and added two vowels to his first name.) But I cannot believe a team that bid adieu to four NFL draftees early will be quite as good. (Didn’t Georgia suffer a bit without Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno?) The Jackets will lose three road conference games: At North Carolina, at Clemson, at Virginia Tech.

Florida State will win the ACC Atlantic. By default.

Under Derek Dooley, Tennessee will win its final four games. The Vols will, however, lose six of their first eight.

Southern Cal will finish fifth in the Pac-10. Lane Kiffin: Money for nothing and quips for free.

Georgia will beat Georgia Tech. A.J. Green will catch the winning touchdown pass from Murray with 41 seconds remaining. The score will be 27-24. Paul Johnson will suppress the urge to punch somebody in the face.

Until Richt wins it all at Georgia, he’ll continue to get more than his share of media bias, bad calls, penalties, etc.

Maybe the only way to stop it is to go undefeated and to win each game by a large margin. Needs to dominate a media darling, like Florida. Nothing will change it all faster than crushing Florida, not just winning, but dominating them, like Alabama did.

Notice how Saban is suddenly the media darling, less penalties are called on him now, and he’s 31 on everybody’s pre-season list, and no one’s hotseat.

How did Saban do it? Went undefeated, added blowout wins by large margins, & crushed the media darling Florida.

Florida has a ridiculously easy schedule???????

LSU, Bama, Miss St., UGA, Florida St. Peppered with UT and Kentucky. Granted there are three breathers and Vandy, but how is that a patsy schedule? I’m sorry but LSU/Bama back to back then the possibility of playing one of them (probably Bama) again in the championship. You’re smoking crack buddy.

Personally, I think the Dawgs will take the East for the very reasons you think UF will. It’s okay, though, I hope everybody thinks Georgia’s a lame duck.

In 2007, Richt crushed media darling Florida, and became the media darling the next year, starting 2008 ranked pre-season #1. Best way to change things fast again is to dominate media darling Florida. With the 3-4 defense, and Georgia’s talented offense and special teams, SHOULD be a big win by Georgia, at least looks that way on paper. Unless CMR beats himself with turnovers again.

Dan R should have been a politician…… He said a lot, he said NOTHING! I will say this, as a season ticket holder for many years, I DON”T want to see crap games like MTSU, JState, or any of the crap gimme games we have on the schedule this year….. We already have a fairly easy schedule with the ACC. We NEED quality opponents every week to help bring this program back to prominence, that horse crap about the team peaking, and the right balance is just that, BS!

Some of you Techies……Dawgs win 10, Tech 7. Excitement around defense for UGA and the shine is off CPJ as people figure out his offense.

Boots, I’m going to answer your post for CPJ … you sound like a broken record! Since 1983 people have been “figuring out” his offense to no avail. Maybe after 2010 you will understand it a little better. PJ, with his HS school offense, has won MANY more games than he has lost over the years, and it won’t change in 2010, 2011, 2012, and so forth and so on ……

Mark,
I’ve gotta give you credit. You did a great job last season with your predictions.

I’m sure you’ve surprised yourself (your predictions the previous 24+ years leaves much to be desired).

I see similarities to this 2010 UGA squad with the 2006 squad.
Experienced OL. Slew of backs that haven’t carried the load for a full season.
Inexperience at QB
Easy schedule (relative to 2008 and 2009).

As it turned out in 2006, a lot of the wins against easier opponents were very close.
And the Vandy/Kentucky losses were very close (if Andy Bailey wasn’t filling in for the hamstring hurt Coutu, UGA wins those games).

Differences between 2006 and 2010? Well, I don’t expect UF to win the National Championship.
I don’t think Tennessee is as good as they were with Fulmer in ‘06.

My prediction… UGA wins a bunch of close games if they can get superior special teams play.
1 loss to Florida in a low scoring affair.
and 1 loss to S.Car. Spurrier has traded in his evil genius helmet and adopted the Lou Holtz mantra in interviews. “We’ve got a lot of respect for Furman and feel they are a great opponent. They’ve got one of the nations best punt cover units. Did you see how much trouble they gave Auburn last year?”

UGA finishes 10-2. But more of that is due to smoke and mirrors (and scheduling) with a team that is more fundamentally sound than 2009, but not necessarily better.

Tech getting an invite to the big 10?
The only thing I don’t like about the big 10 is all their games aside from maybe 1 each week are noon kickoffs. So playing iowa, wisc, purdue, ind, mich st, etc would all be noon games. Maybe one like psu, ohio st they would put afternoon or night.

Tech got an invite to the big 10. Only thing about the big 10 i don’t like is their nack for noon kickoffs. the only teams that play afternoon are the big games. so tech would likely have 8-9 games at noon during the season. in the acc, we have about 4

Tech will again win 10 games … Paul Johnson’s offense will win 8 games and Tech will find away to win two others. It’s foolish to think that just because a team sends players to the pros that the coaching staff can’t replace them. Remember this is a system based offense that doesn’t require the very best talent. I like Tech’s chance to be good again. Not great but good. Top 15 nationally.

Georgia and USC east got blown out by Tennessee last year but UT will lose 6 of it’s first 8? UT played UF and Bama close as well. Eric Berry is gone but Jackson is back as well as some other great Defensive players. Dangerous to make UT an afterthought for both USCeast and UGA when they got drilled by them last year. A more accurate and less biased prediction would be that UF wins the east and 2nd is up for grabs.

I know all those losses over the years have made you a little jaded toward UT Mark, but 6 losses in the first 8 seems more like wishful thinking to me. UGA better not overlook a team that they lost to 45-19.

It is hard to respect the opinion of someone who picks Clemson over Georgia Tech. Not only does Paul Johnson own Dabo, but Clemson is losing its QB and Mr. Everything Spiller…give me a break. GT has a nasty schedule next year and true great talent has departed BUT, to dispute your arguments for why Tech will suck: 1- See first comment. 2- Anthony Allen for Dwyer, absolutely no fall off in production in the B-Back slot. 3- Losing DMorgan hurts, nothing really to neutralize that. 4- Losing Morgan Burnett really doesn’t hurt. The D sucked last year with a mediocre season from Burnett, so the D only stands to improve with or without him. 5- Losing Baybay may hurt but Stephen Hill and Melton can probably go vertical as good as Baybay, their physicality remains to be proven.

Your UGA/SEC bias shines through in this article. You tipped your cap to UGA’s new and UNPROVEN DC and cited it as part of the reason UGA will be 10-3 in a tough SEC, but you neglect to even mention Tech’s new and extremely proven DC. That is fine, run of the mill, and I think you went to UGA, so I can’t blame you. In the end, who knows. Go Jackets.

I disagree also that UF has an easy schedule. . . LSU and Bama back to back. UGA and MSU. UT has players that will hurt you, whether you think Dooley will be successful in the first year or not. All SEC opponents in a row (with a bye before UGA, of course). Then, to top all off a respectable rival in FSU. I don’t see how this is a coaster. I pick UGA to win the East for the same reason you and everyone else pick UF. Yes there is a new QB as there is at UF. Yes there is a new D coordinator as there is at UF. As far as those two factors go, you are right that the ‘Cocks are in the best position. But, the 3-4 will give Garcia fits, and Spurrier will muck it up by causing a QB controversy.

If your reasoning suggests that UF still has stellar athletes, then it would follow that UT still has a great deal of potential.

I think the EAST is wide open. It is the year to beat Florida. The WEST is more open than it was last year, but Bama definitely has an edge. Look for Auburn to upset Bama after falling to UGA.

Hmmm

June 6th, 2010
12:34 pm

Everyone says the South Carolina game will be tough in Columbia, but do you want to hear a fact that NO ONE ever mentions: South Carolina hasn’t beaten UGA in Columbia since 2000! The Dawgs have won every single game in Columbia under Mark Richt. Just like the Arkansas game last year, everyone is predicting this to be a trap game, which of course means that it won’t be. I say Dawgs beat South Carolina convincingly in Columbia. They will then come into the Arkansas game thinking they are better than they are and will get whipped at home, which in turn means they will go to Starkville feeling sorry for themselves and which will result in another loss. Dawgs will rebound for a few games and then lose to Florida( who has a bye week before UGA). They will then travel to Auburn and lose( I just can’t see them beating the Tigers 5 years in a row) and then will close out the season with a squeaker win over Tech. Final record, 8-4.

Florida will play again for the SEC championship. It depends on how the ball bounces whether it’s a win.
Georgia Tech will go no higher until they can stop the run. Look at the last two years and notice (especially in bowl games and last year’s Georgia game) how a punishing running game stymied them.

I got Olson, AJ & Ealey playing like the 3 Muskateers. Look for a 4th Muskateer Wooten or Branden Smith or Durham, to get 5 or 6 touches a game–all are explosive playmakers.

O-Line is the best Richt has had. Over 150 starts.

Murray is best QB to play at Georgia, watch for him to go 250 passes without an interception. When it’s gametime, he’s locked and loaded. Gray & Mason terrific too if needed.

This defense will surprise people.

Let’s take nose. 3 great guys could rotate until someone dominates, watch out for Kwame and Thornton–could be sleepers.

OLB’s–Grantham’s in charge–lots of sacks there. Tons of talent here–could be the most dominant set of OLB’s in the SEC.

ILB’s–Belin’s the man–2 finish in top 10 in SEC tackles.

DB’s/Safeties–Lakatos–Cuff looks amazing, Boykin is a freak. Nick Williams brought it this Spring, Rambo can bring it too. Jakar was dominant in Jr. College will play big too. Not as much depth here, so need to play injury-free ball.

On special teams, Punter/Kicker/KR, best trio in country. Look for AJ, Ealey or Ogletree to shine as a top PR. Belin will get KO return team shored up in tackling skills.

Auburn’s success last year was a fluke. Amazes me how happy the Barners are about moral victories — as if they were the real thing. And I guess they’ll have a huge parade if the BCS committee decides to strip USC of their title — it will take weeks for sanitation workers to clean up the campus — people will have to drive to Columbus to get toilet paper since it will be sold out at the local IGA.

No, Auburn doesn’t upset Bama. Although if they keep the margin within 20 points, somehow the Aubies will claim they’ve won. Typical of those classless tractor boys.

UGA surprises everyone. Now they will lose to So Car and one other SEC team, but they will upset UF and end up in the SEC Championship against Bama.
They will ulitimately lose that game. Bama goes undefeated (beating the barn by a greater margin than in 2008) and will win a 2nd consecutive National Championship after blowing out Ohio State.

We won’t lose (fellas….it’s LOSE when you don’t win and LOOSE when it ain’t tight) to SPurrier, and I think CTG shows his worth against Mallet. The key to making Mallet a worse QB is pressure and CTG will be bringing it allll day long. Also, ARK’s defense can’t keep our running game from controlling the clock. We get ahead early, forcing Mallett to throw, keep hitting him and create TO’s. All the while, our QB is building confidence and earning experience. That will lead to his being able to not only keep from losing games for us, but to winning some later in the year.

So which is it, doggies? Are Phil Steele and Athlon right or not? I see too many contradictions. Ya’ll are going to win everything or maybe one loss. Ya’ll also say that Steele and Athlon are the most accurate predictors. Well, they have you guys ranked somewhere aroung 16-20. That does not equal undefeated, SEC East champs or anything. That’s about a 9-4 season.
Again, which one is it? The rest of us need to know so we can plan accordingly. After all, UGA fans are NEVER wrong about their team in June!

1….We will not have ANY turnovers or penalties this season beacuse Richt made all the right moves in the off-season.
2….Grantham will prove this year that he is the best DC since Buddy Ryan. Dawgs will only allow about 6.2 points per game (less to UF and Tech).
3….Murray will be the best QB to ever play the college game in year one. Have you seen his YouTube highlights? The G-day game was only to lull our opponeents to sleep.
4….Ealey and King are the best tandem to ever grace a football field. Period! Alabama, your guys are second rate compared to ours.
5….Our punter and place-kicker are the best ever. Even though we won’t need them because we will have a +7,000 scoring margin.
6….We will dominate UF this year. They can’t beat us without Tebow or Charlie Strong. They have never beaten us before without those guys.
7….We will win the SEC East and destroy Bama in Atlanta.
8….Bama and UF suck. Their coaches are just lucky and the ref’s love them. Mike Slive mows both of their lawns.
9….We will win the BCS championship aaginst OSU by 75 points.
10…Mark Richt is the best coach ever because he was born the same year as Chuck D from Public Enemy.
