ESPN: Derrick Favors’ draft stock is growing … and growing

Derrick Favors looks all of 6-foot-10 here. (AP photo)

Last week the consensus had Derrick Favors going No. 3 in the NBA draft, behind John Wall of Kentucky and Ohio State’s Evan Turner. Now, courtesy of Chad Ford of ESPN.com’s Insiders at the Chicago draft combine, comes word the Georgia Tech one-and-done could go higher.

Why? Because, per Ford, it turns out Favors is even bigger than he appears. Writes Ford (link requires registration): “He’s a legit 6-foot-10, has a 7-2 wingspan and a 9-2 standing reach. Those numbers are actually very close to Dwight Howard and better than the Atlanta Hawks’ Al Horford. If Favors projects as a center in the NBA, he too could get some strong consideration with the No. 2 pick.”

As has been noted before, the early line on Favors had him being a cross between Horford and Josh Smith. But it’s much harder to find a center than a power forward, and if NBA teams regard Favors as a center … well, that’s a major development.

Ford also provides this pithy blind quote:

“Favors doesn’t have the offensive game that [Kentucky's] DeMarcus Cousins has,” another GM told me. “But he’s a better athlete, a better defender and when the two of them met head-to-head in high school, Favors kicked Cousins’ butt. Had he got going earlier at Georgia Tech, he could’ve been, probably should’ve been, the No. 1 pick.”

Remember back in January, when folks were saying Favors was overrated? He wasn’t. Just underused. I noted a couple of months ago that Favors would be much better as a pro than as a collegian, and I’ll stand by that.

Mark – I can’t see anyone going above John Wall but I expect Favors to go ahead of Cousins, and not just because of any head to head in HS. Didn’t Cousins show up in Chicago with a little bit of a weight problem?

Just further proves Hewitt’s incompetence when it comes to coaching. Favors should have averaged 20+ points and 10+ rebounds in college, and been in the running for player of the year. But, thanks to Hewitt, he was instead, underused, misused, and horribly misguided by the sorry coach that we are still stuck with for another year.

Really stepping out on a limb there Mark saying he will be a better pro player than college. We will never know how good of a college player he could have been. You can’t judge him on one year playing for a coach who I am not going to mention.

Cousins is very skilled for a big man, Paul in RDU, but he never seemed to be in shape at Kentucky. And if you’re not in shape as a teenager, what happens when you get a bit older?

That said, Favors likewise seemed to tire rather quickly at Tech. Especially early in the season.

Even if you understand that’s how the game is played nowadays, the one-and-dones are disconcerting. I mean, look at Kentucky: The Wildcats essentially recruited a team for all of one year, and now they’ve gone and recruited a whole new team.

All of you Hewitt bashers give it a rest please. Not every college player has it click for himself in his first year. Evan Turner is a top five pick, was he in the mix for top five consideration after his freshman year? Favors game is an exceptionally physical one which bodes well in the NBA, however in the ACC he was going to constantly remain in foul trouble. Tech will actually be a better team without him, and it is not necessarily a knock on him. UGA went to the final four after Wilkins left, its natural for the remaining players to galvanize and play better.

Derrick Favors is such an obvious talent, I guess he has to go high in the draft. But as a Tech senior who went to a lot of games and was looking forward to having one of the most explosive, dominating freshmen in college basketball, I was totally disappointed. Maybe Favors was underused, but his body language was totally awful almost 100% of the time. He seems lazy, he doesn’t hustle, he doesn’t care about winning or losing… that’s what he telegraphed to me from the court. If I were an NBA GM watching tape on Favors, I would be impressed by his obvious physical gifts, but I would definitely question his work ethic and will to win.

Then again, Hewitt can recruit ‘em but he can’t seem to coach them to their potential. Who thought Anthony Morrow was going to be a solid NBA starter? He was a solid role player on our team, if that. No. 3 pick for Favors just seems too high to risk getting a lazy player who just wants to get paid.

Dr. Warren

May 25th, 2010

Fair enough, but I wish this kind of player could at least stick around in college long enough to prove it first. It’s hurting the college game something terrible when so many talented ones leave as freshmen. And let’s hope he’s lucky enough to get a pro coach who can educate him in the fundamentals. Woody sure didn’t seem to be that guy for Marvin–or Acie or Teague.

The one-and-dones are going to be the downfall of college basketball. Not only does it prevent your team from developing year to year and learning how to play together, it’s also horrendous from a academic perspective. These kids don’t even have to go to class do they? If they do it’s only a few joke classes to remain eligible. I would prefer they change the rule and they them go straight from HS again. At least that way they don’t destroy college basketball. The rule should be the same as football. You have to stay at least 2 years.

HugoStiglitz

May 25th, 2010

I agree Andy. I would prefer they use the Major League Baseball model. If you are fresh out of high school you can go straight to the pros, and many players do. If you decide to go to college though then you cant turn pro until after your junior season or until you are 21 years old. Football is similar just that players out of high school cant go pro. The game would be more fun to watch if we could root for these guys for more then one season.

MB,
I posed this thought on Hoopinion:

Peachtree Hoops has an interview with Horford from the Univision website (all in Spanish). Can’t read, but in short 9via interpretation by Peachtree Hoops), Al asks about moving to the ‘4′, along with a cquiring a true ‘5′.

Off-the-wall Thought: Trade draft position, rights to Childress and maybe Smoove to a lottery team (thinking spots 5-12) to get C Hasaan Whiteside or C/F Derrick Favors (trading one ATL native for right to draft another … LOL). then move Horford to ‘4′. Try Teague at the PG or use whatever cap room we have after JJ leaves to get a younger starting PG. Marvin keeps his role as starting SF, which hopefully blossoms under the new coach.

What I also forgot to add or include was either using Crawford at starting PG for his last year or trading him (with his expiring contract) for player(s) of value. A trade is contingent on who is interested in Crawfords skill set and liabilities…most likely in a similar capacity as we used him. Problem is …. if J. Crawford and JJ both allowed to leave, our 2 most potent scorers are off to greener pastures…and we are hanicapped for filling the bucket at the G position.

After looking at the games this year CPH had to slowly bring Favors along because Favors actually struggled at the begining with his post moves, ball handling and getting in position for the, plus he wasn’t very physical when the season first began. I think he is going to have the same proplem when he gets in the NBA but he will eventually be a great player. If you look at Al Horford, he had the same problem in his first year in college and the NBA. Also to note, CPH didn’t have much to work with at the pg position. You Tech fans want to continue to criticize CPH about his coaching but you praise him about his recruiting. I would think he is doing a pretty good job with having to play so many freshman players every year because he have so many players leaving early. with that being said, he have to work on preparing his top players for the NBA in less than a year and trying to coach a full teams. I like Favors, but players like him hurt coaches more than the coach hurt them. I want to see what you guys are going to say about this years recruiting class. The recruiting class isn’t going to be as strong so do you expect the team to be better than last years? One way or another, you are going to find a way not to like CPH.

I don’t care that he’s a one and done- it just stinks that Hewitt got nowhere near close to his potential.

You recruit a kid like Favors, you spend a lot of time that you could’ve spent recruiting, say, a handful of team-focused 3 stars that make a deep bench and stay for four years.

All of which is fine, if you get the results.

Never mind that a kid you don’t have to worry about graduating also has certain benefits.

“Fire Hewitt Now” may not be a financial reality, but I predict that CPJ getting boosters excited enough about Tech athletics to pay for Hewitts’ ouster will be merely another part of his legend.

Many overlook that Derrick is still 18 and will not turn 19 for another couple of months, while John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins will be turning 20. That said, Derrick is a legitimate elite athlete, at 6′10″ and approximately 240, a true talent that has never been used fulling to his potential even in high school and at GA Tech. He had to rely too much on his athleticism to earn his honors. Had he played for a better team, guards that can feed him the ball in the low post, his stats would be that much more impressive.

Not only is Derrick a remarkable young basketball player he is an excellent student, a young man that well grounded. May he have a bright NBA career. Go Derrick.

Good to see NBA insiders confirming what every single one of us who attended Tech (and send in the alumni money every year) already know: Paul Hewitt must go. He didn’t know what to do with Bosh… couldn’t get the ball inside to Favors. What’s the point with the “one-and-done” approach if we have a coach who can’t take advantage of the “one”…?? Think About This:

If Doc Rivers is going to retire, then the Celtics are going to have to hire a coach. I believe that Tom Thibodeau will be the next Celtics coach. I would love to have him in ATL, but we have not even interviewed him. Doc Rivers is not going to leave the Celtics to come and coach the Hawks either!
Phil Jackson is not going anywhere. He will retire as the Lakers coach when that time comes. Larry Brown has no ties to ATL. Why would he want to come here?
The top college coaches that are being mentioned, Coach K, Calipari, etc. are not interested in the Hawks!
Like it or not, the Hawks best choices are (not in any particular order) Avery Johnson, SVG (may get fired), JVG, Mike Brown, or Byron Scott. IMO these other assistant coaches (Casey, Mitchell, etc.) and former players (M. Jackson) that haven’t any coaching experience, whose names are being tossed around, would not be an upgrade over Woodson! Don’t hire someone that is not a great improvement over what you had!

Sund needs to be patient and see what coaches become available between now and the end of the NBA playoffs. We need to have a great coach in place by July 1. Then the FA’s, that we are going after, will know who the Hawks coach is going to be! That will help with attracting the right players to the Hawks! JMO
