The Hawks unleash one of the epic collapses in Atlanta annals

This was the Falcons blowing the lead against Danny White and Dallas in January 1981. This was Mark Wohlers hanging the slider to Jim Leyritz in October 1996. Only it wasn’t. It was worse.
Those opponents were top-class. The Hawks just blew a 13-point lead and probably a playoff series to Milwaukee, which is a No. 6 seed missing its All-Star center. They trail 3-2 in a series they led 2-0. They face elimination on the road, a place they’ve won once in 11 tries over the past three postseasons.
Yeah, theoretically they could still pull this out, but how can you win in the Bradley Center when you can’t hold a nine-point lead inside the final four minutes with the series lead on the line? How can you put this colossal choke — I hate that word, but it applies here — behind you?
Up nine, and here’s what happened: Josh Smith missed a dunk by hitting the ball on the underside of the backboard; Jamal Crawford short-armed a layup, the first of his five misses down the stretch; the Hawks watched as Ersan Ilyasova grabbed every loose ball and Joe Johnson fouled out on a charge. Nine points up with 3:55 left, the Hawks saw the lead disappear in 116 seconds.
I say again: One hundred sixteen seconds.
There are no excuses for this game, this series. The team with the better players is the one with one foot out the exit door. The Bucks have two chances to win once. The Hawks are down to their final shot.
“We had control of the game,” Mike Woodson said. “We let it get away.”
Then this: “It’s still a seven-game series. We’re going to see what we’re made of.”
We may already have seen it. We may have seen a team of splendid resources hit its ceiling. The Hawks win because they’re talented, but talent hasn’t been enough against a smarter and more dogged opponent. If anything, talent has undone itself. The Hawks have played into the Bucks’ hands for three games now, and there seems no end in sight. The Bucks are now believers; the Hawks really aren’t sure what they are anymore.
“All winning basketball plays,” Woodson said of the two offensive rebounds claimed by Ilyasova that spawned five immense points, the final three coming on a corner trey by Carlos Delfino that put the Bucks ahead by four. But why can’t Woodson’s men make those plays? Why does everything always come down to Joe Johnson, and why, with Iso-Joe rendered inoperative this crucial night, did nobody have a clue? (Unless hoisting a jump shot is having a clue.) This isn’t supposed to be a one-man team, but right now it’s not playing like a team at all.
Said Milwaukee’s splendid Brandon Jennings: “When Joe Johnson went out of the game, I thought we had a chance.”
Nine points up, four minutes left. Four minutes from a 3-2 series lead. Four minutes that will live in infamy on the long list of Atlanta sports collapses. Four minutes that could lead to the dismantling of this roster and perhaps the dismissal of this coach. Four unbelievable minutes.
Really, though, how unbelievable were they? The Hawks blew a fat lead here against Dallas, nearly blew one against Orlando last month. They’re known as the team that can fall to pieces if you keep applying pressure, and on this wretched night they lived down to that sorry reputation. They wasted a lead that should have been safe and are positioned to lose a series that should already have been won.
Technically the Hawks haven’t yet been eliminated. But it sure feels that way.

This is what happens to a talented group of players with no direction or coaching. So many really good players and a almost great year thrown away. But this is what we have seen over and over and over again the past 2 months. No leadership or help from the soon to be ex-coach Woodson. I really not sure about dismanteling the team, this defeat snatched from the jaws of victory on this stage is a really big body blow. It really hurts.

I Swear this town is snakebit when It comes to sports teams.Everybody Listen UP.Think about this.The Braves have lost 8 in a roll.The sorry New York Mets could’nt do anything right till they played the Braves.The Braves got them corrected AT OUR EXPENSE.Last year the Atlanta Falcons got the Dallas Cowboys season straightened out while Keith Brooking whooped It up ALL OVER THE FIELD.Then the Philadelphia Eagles come to town and the Falcons lay an egg while the Michael Vick show takes charge.He even throws a touchdown pass and we let him.Now the Atlanta Hawks GO up 2-0 to the lowly Milwaukee Bucks and the Hawks are gonna let them salvage their season with a bunch of no names and take this series.Just when you think this town Is on the verge of something big that crazy voodoo takes control and these teams are reduced to wobbly legged morons.Pathetic…Pathetic…Pathetic.How much more can this town take?It’s a stench In our nostrils!WAKE UP ATLANTA IT’S A BAD NIGHTMARE!

The bucks are a much better team than what everyone gives them credit for. It does not matter how many games you win in the regular season. Everyone is back to 0-0 win loss in the playoffs. I am a bucks fan and I do not know how the bucks pulled this out but they won and thats what teams have to do in the playoffs. Find a way to win.

“Coach”, you seem to be the only “coach” in the league that truly believes that his 4’s and 5’s can check 1’s and 2’s on the perimeter!! I mean doesn’t that effectively take away your size advantage on the post when your big men are trying to check guards out on the perimeter? Doesn’t that take away from your rebounding? Doesn’t that negate Josh Smith’s shot blocking help defense in the paint?
How can your “superstar” end the game on the bench, fouled out, with 13 points? And why does your “superstar” insist on dribbling the ball til 4 seconds left on the clock. Haven’t you drawn up a play he could be running?

And the Bucks are a good team, no doubt, but this win had more to do with Woodson’s incompetence than anything else. Milwaukee did what they were supposed to do and took advantage of the teams’ ineptitude.

The Hawks will chalk up their first and only road win of the 2010 playoffs on Friday night and finish off the Bucks at home on Sunday. Proud of their accomplishment, they’ll roll over and lose 4 of 5 against Orlando and watch the Conf. Finals on TV again.

This team has maxed out. Maybe it’s due to coaching, but I don’t think so. This team will never be more than solid-50 wins, maybe win a 1st round series (and even that is in doubt). But as constituted, they will never contend for a championship. It is time for a major make over.

This is a team loss, not a coaching loss. The Hawks had a ten point lead with less than 4:00 min to go. Every guy on that floor needed to give more, hustle and finish strong. They didn’t. Woodson can’t force these guys to play with passion, they have to want it for themselves.

No, Woodson can’t force them to play with passion, but a good coach can motivate them to play harder (ex. Scott Skiles). Woodson should also be able to draw up plays for them to run during crunch time instead of having the players on the floor flying by the seat of their pants.

thanks bradley for making an article out my earlier post today about the possibilities of avery, hewitt or byron scott coaching this team, and did anyone see where i long ago said that josh smith is the worst on-ball defender in the nba and the poor kid has no clue on boxing out and overall ball skills, but since our backs are against the wall and since kurt thomas is setting the pick for jennings, instead of switching out right how about doubling the pick and roll, make kurt thomas beat us for 2 games with that 15footer of his and let’s move on to Orlando because we know jennings can beat us on the pick and roll, let’s stay at home on everybody, especially Delfino, and make kurt thomas beat us, please woody do that for me

Is it just me or do the braves and the hawks play the same way? Just not very smart. Of course its the coaching. But it doesn’t help when Crawford goes 4 for 18. Now that is what I call choking.

THIS WAS SOME FRSGGLE NAGGLE BU__SH__!!!! I’ve been REALLY trying to give Woody the benefit, but tonite it was glaringly obvious, he’s not the best, or even close, strategist. The Bucks stayed fresh because the Hawks NEVER swing the ball, it’s bring the ball down and Jamaal or Joe, whoever commandeers the ball after midcourt, will shoot it under ANY circumstances. That crap doesn’t work during the playoffs man!! The Bucks may be a No. 6, but they are a PLAYOFF TEAM, meaning they are good but not as good as the hawks made them look! I’ve said it once and i’;; say it again, the Hawks need an identity…they don’t know how to play half court and they’re not a running team….there is no F–KING IN BETWEEN!!! You have GOT to do one or the other, or BOTH!! And that’s on the coach….forget it man, i’m done here….can’t stomach thinking about their azzez anymore right now….sheeesh..

I just love the choke comments typed in capital letters over and over. Very intelligent.
Now, back to intelligent commentary on tonights game. I do recall one time when a team choked in Game Five at home of an NBA series, and then came back to win. Does anyone remember the 1994 Eastern Finals, Knicks Vs Pacers? Reggie Miller went off on the Knicks for an insane amount of points in the final minutes to win Game Five at MSG. The Knicks then promptly turned around, and gave a gut check effort, to win Game Six in Indiana, before pulling it out in Game Seven.
The difference was. While that 1994 Knick team was offensively challenged, they had Patrick Ewing, one of the 50 Greatest players in NBA history, and Pat Riley, owner of, at that time, four NBA rings, and who, as we all know, would win a fifth ring with Miami.
This Hawk team doesn’t have that one big “Greatest player” to turn to. Nor do they have Riley. Love him or hate him, the man is one of the most successful coaches in NBA history.
Due to these facts, I think the Hawks will lose. I think they will lose quietly, in Game Six, and maybe in blowout fashion.

The coach either has not clue what is going on or is just too inept to make an adjustment. Our star player is nowhere to be found and still refuses to take his big tail in the post or drive. Smitty has started shooting jump shots again. If Bibby isn’t hitting shots he serves no purpose whatsover. I mean, If it takes Jamal Crawford going for 50 again what does it say about the starters?

The Braves are on an eight game skid.
The Hawks have lost three games in a row and face elimination.
The Falcons draft is not being rated very well.
Georgia’s basically left with one quarterback.
Dwyer falls into the sixth round of the draft.
It’s like there’s some weird hex on our sports teams!

The NBA blows to begin with, and the Spirit are the sorriest excuse for ownership in pro sports. On top of that, the Hawks have put together what may be the absolute dumbest and laziest team in the country. Because of this loss, Woody’s contract will expire, JJ will leave (and take his stupid isolation plays with him), Bibby will leave or retire, Josh Smith will pout and maybe get traded, and attendance will plummet to levels of the old Omni days. The franchise will bleed so much cash that the “jerks formerly known as the ownership team named the Spirit” will be forced to sell. Pathetic ownership is the fundamental problem with this team. and the loss of this series is our best chance of getting rid of them!
