Live from Game 5: Do the Hawks have an answer for Bango?

Joe Johnson practices shooting from the bench. Good trick, but not quite Bango-riffic.

Big game. Lots of pressure. If the Hawks lose tonight, they probably lose the series. But enough gloom and doom. Let’s talk about Bango.

Bango is the Milwaukee Bucks’ mascot. He — and I believe he’s a he — wears a deer costume. He’s not what you’d call intimidating. (When last did you see a scary deer?) But Bango did become the biggest Internet sensation of the NBA playoffs with a feat performed in Game 4 on Monday.

During a timeout, Bango climbed up a 20-foot ladder and, with his back to the basket, jumped off and dunked the ball. The Bradley Center crowd went Bango-ballistic, and even the Hawks took note. “That,” Joe Smith pronounced before tonight’s Game 5, “was sweet.”

And here’s my challenge to the Hawks: Last year Philips Arena produced a playoff star in Spirit the Hawk, who flew rampant before Game 2 of Round 1 against Miami and became so famous that he — the bird himself informed me in a Tweet that he was a he — had his own Twitter postings. But Spirit has been strangely quiet this time.

I say, on the behalf of Hawks fans everywhere, it’s time to unleash the fury. Un-tether Spirit and let him dunk the ball from the rafters. This is the postseason. Gotta bring your mascot’s A-game.

Oh, about Game 5 itself: You all know what’s at stake. So do the Hawks. They seem ready, and they’d better be. Lose tonight and Bango could easily sky-slam them into the floorboards Friday in Milwaukee.

And with that, we’ll open the floor for questions, comments and your favorite anecdotes about dunkin’ deer. I’ll be here until the Hawks have taken a 3-2 lead in the series — yes, I think they’ll win, but I’ve been wrong rather recently — and I’d love to have you alongside.

Horford from the baseline. Hawks by four.

Two offensive rebounds for the Hawks on that rip. Horford with the tip. Effort not an issue tonight.

Nice effort there by Josh to try and contest Luc Richard’s dunk.

Hawks have scored on their first five trips. Joe just banked one in and got fouled doing it.

Josh Smith misses a jumper. Ends the streak of scoring trips. Then Jennings nails a trey.

They look to have more fire so far. Although that seems to change rather quickly. Bucks are hittin shots again.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a team set as many moving picks as the Bucks without getting it called once.

Jennings finally misses. And Marvin scores. He has six. Hawks down one at the first timeout.

The score is way too high, folks. The Bucks are on pace to score 144 points.

PUT IN MARIO TO GUARD JENNINGS

WHY DO NO REPORTERS ASK ABOUT USING TEAGUE OR MARIO? THATS WHY WE HAVE THEM. TO GUARD FAST GUARDS

You can’t use Mario West for long stretches because he can’t make a shot.

Hopefully Jennings doesn’t stay this hot. Marvin is finally showing up thankfully.

Hawks must be on pace to score 142 then.

If Jennings stays on this pace, he’ll break the NBA record for points in a playoff tilt by 31.

Too many jumpers early in the possessions. We need some ball movement. Up-tempo game, but don’t just settle for the first look at the hoop.

So when does Jennings get a nice trip to the floor on his butt? Or is that not part of Woodson’s philosophy either??

Scoring pace has slowed. It’s 20-all. That’s more like it.

These are the playoffs, let’s stress.

In breaking news, the Braves are already losing 1-0 in the 1st after going 1, 2, 3 in the top half and already committing an error in the bottom half. Catch your breath everyone.

Talk about Bango to the beat of your own drum. The only thing better than the dunk was his retort to the Sherwin-Williams guy: “Go paint your own @ss white!”

Which the Sherwin-Williams guy promptly did.
