Fretting over UGA’s Logan Gray: Much ado about not much

ugafoot.0411

Georgia fans are of two minds: The majority of them didn’t want Logan Gray to be their No. 1 quarterback, but they don’t want him to leave, either. Because what would happen if Aaron Murray gets hurt?

This is, I submit, much ado about not very much. Whether or not Gray decides to transfer — he’s “weighing his options,” as we know — the fate of Georgia football in 2010 and beyond rests with Murray. Gray might be an OK backup, but how often does the backup quarterback play? (D.J. Shockley never started a game until he was a redshirt senior; once he became the starter, he missed one game — Florida — due to injury.)

There’s still one other quarterback on Georgia’s roster, or there soon will be. He’s Hutson Mason, incoming from Lassiter High. He wasn’t quite as big a recruit as Gray — Mason was a 3-star prospect, according to Scout.com, while Gray was a 4-star — but does that really matter?

What matters: Georgia’s coaches had seen enough of Gray, who’s a redshirt junior, to believe he isn’t a starting SEC quarterback. They didn’t turn to him when Joe Cox came undone at the end of last season, and this winter they seemed more tempted to move Gray to wide receiver — he has returned punts as a Bulldog — than to bump him ahead of Murray.

Bottom line: If Murray goes down in the opener against Louisiana-Lafayette, the Bulldogs will be in trouble. That said, they’d be in trouble no matter who the backup is. No, Mason hasn’t yet thrown a collegiate pass. Let’s also note that Gray, who enrolled in 2007, has thrown only 12 (two of them intercepted).

Yes, it would be nice if Zach Mettenberger were still part of the program. But he isn’t, and that’s his fault. We all know that Bulldog backers, taking a cue from the legendary fretter Larry Munson, are hand-wringers of the first rank, but the program will survive no matter what Logan Gray chooses to do. The man who matters is Aaron Murray.

An aptly titled article, by the way. I don’t think too many “dawg” fans will lose sleep over Logan Gray one way or the other. Someone else can shag punts if he leaves.

Great article Bradley.

Dawg fans need to try to look at the glass half full, cause no matter what happens, there’s nothing we can physically do about it anyway….just let things happen and hope for the best.

Quit stressing…..atleast we ain’t Tennessee. :)

Exactally my feeling on this but I dont think the Dawg fans are fretting as much as you think. When was the last time a QB’s loss derailed the season anyway?

don’t worry, dawg fans. Coach Mark Richt is the coach and he brings the awesome experience from FSU when they scored 50 a game! never you mind that FSU did that because of the players they had. no way, it was all because of Coach Mark Richt. He is a much better coach and man than Urban Meyer, NIck Saban or Les Miles. he has more national championships than all of them combined! what? you say that isnt true? okay, will he is still a super duper husband and heckuva bible-thumper so let’s all bow down to this jagoff!

Right on the money. Better for Mason to come in and learn than Gray and loose.

I’m tired of all the fretting and worrying. Just do the deal. Take what you have and do the best you can do. Some teams start enrolling freshmen at qb and do all right. Murray might not ever be injured and he might be injured on the first play. Either Georgia can match up or they can’t. I’m tired of all the arrests and kicking off and controversy with the team. Get the trouble makers and the dissatisified off the team and just play Georgia football. CMR needs to take control of the program and every member of the team needs to know that breaking the law is not an acceptable behavior. If they break the law, they don’t put on a Georgia uniform.
Let’s get it on and get rid of all this program hurting whining and crying. Go quality dawgs and let the scum put themselves out of the program.

Why does it even matter who takes snaps? Haven’t you heard, apparently UGA has cured all that ails them because Tim Tebow isn’t at UF anymore. Just because Tim Tebow graduated the dogs are now the front runner for the National Title. Or thats at least the way they tell it.

Either way, there was going to be an inexperienced QB in Athens. But at least Gray has been in the system for three years and has played in a college game or two. That said, can’t blame him for considering his options. If Murray is the opening-game starter, then Gray likely will never start. The idea is to play, and these guys have egos. Gray wants to make his mark, and catching punts really isn’t much of one. I’d submit Dawg fans would be paying a little less attention to this if the Braves were relevant or the Hawks weren’t imploding.

I agree with MB’s first paragraph, but after that I don’t know. It doesn’t make much sense to downplay the fact that your backup QB might be a kid out of high school or a redshirt junior who’s been tutored and conditioned in the program for three years. I like Logan Gray. I’ve always wanted to see him have a chance to play, but when UGA is recruiting guys like Murray, I agree it doesn’t seem likely. I hope he stays. I guy with his experience and athleticism could make a the difference in a couple of wins or a couple of losses if he were needed. I wil say that I like Mason’s work ethic and can-do attitude. He’s going to be a damn good Dawg. Can’t wait till September. Go Dawgs !!!!

UGA will obviously need several QBs on the roster to ensure that at least one of them isn’t in jail. With UGA, that’s a simple fact of life. They’re probably the only thug school in the country that has to do that.

Pathetic, isn’t it?

Why hasn’t the AJC sent someone to Remerton to get to the bottom of the Mettenberger thing? Before the fall of newspapers, that would’ve been done on Day 1. I just want to know how a big-time SEC QB winds up in trouble in some place even I’ve never hear of … and I’ve been to Barney, Enigma, Ty Ty and Chula.

As far as Gray, when I was in high school, the all-state halfback switched to QB when the starter went down. Still went to the quarterfinals.

Nice article for a change, Mark. While I agree that Murray is the future, I do wish Gray well in whatever he decides to do. I think he can be an effective QB on some level, perhaps in FCS as soon as next season. That said, I’ll be happy if he stays in Athens.

Gray’s not that good, so if he transfers its no big deal. Once matson learns the offense, he’ll be decent but probably not a star. Ga needs to recruit a 5 star QB for next year from a national search, since playing time is guaranteed.

Mark you are right. UGA will be fine who ever the backup is. CMR must have seen something in Hutson to want to move Logan to receiver. Logan just simply has not done his job to earn the QB job…..MaryM who cares what you think, your red dot is coming off of your forehead.

I’d hate to lose Gray but you’re right Mark. The future, at least for now, is with Murray. Watching the spring game, even though Murray didn’t play his best, was revealing. He brings a good combination of a quick release, a strong arm, and good legs. If I was CMR I would find a way to get Gray on the field. I hate to see that athletic ability riding the pine when he could possibly help the team.

I dunno, 82Dawg, but this isn’t coming from far away. I mean, Z Met did it to himself. Logan looked pretty good to me in the spring game (so did Z Met). It ain’t like some DT from ‘Bama put a lick on them. It’s all in how you handle things in the house. Or not….maybe we can find a way to blame this on UF or GT……..

joefan

The real question is who is minding the store in Athens? Players arrested, no depth at qb, 4th or 5th choice for DC. If it weren’t so sad it would be funny.

Atticus

April 28th, 2010

This is correct Mark. The problem lies, however, in the event that Murray gets hurt for a game or part of a game. Gray is an adquate backup that could run the team and beat a lot of teams especially if Bobo gets a clue about how to run the ball but I am not sure Mason is as capable as Gray to fill in yet.

82 Dawg

Walker, Texas Ranger….That would be a bigger issue if that happened. Has the 1st and 2nd string QB’s ever gone down at the same time? If it were to happen the kid out of Wayne County is a walk on that alot of people are talking about. Spurrier wanted him but he chose UGA instead.

joefan ..the question is do you have a clue. Going into spring there were 3 QB’s on the roster already on campus with 3 more coming in May.So there were plenty of depth at the position. No one can help that Murray got caught acting like a college kid and Gray got his feelings hurt because he was not name number one right now.

Way to get to the “bottom line” MB. It’s simple, if Aaron Murray (1) stays healthy, and (2) lives up to his hype and ranking out of high school, #3 rated QB in rivals.com I think, Georgia will be fine. If, he performs like Joe Cox, both Murray and CMR will feel the wrath of the Bulldog Nation.
