Live from Hawks-Bucks Game 3: The weather outside is …

Even the Milwaukee Bucks dance team has seen better days. (Photo by M. Bradley)

Even this Milwaukee dance team, shown warming up, has seen sunnier days. (Photo by M. Bradley)

Milwaukee — I’m sitting in the Bradley Center. There are two things good I can say about the Bradley Center: First, it has a nice name; second, it has a roof. Other than that …

It’s raining in Atlanta. I know. It was pouring when Airtran Flight 420 departed — 75 minutes late — from Hartsfield-Jackson this afternoon. From the forecasts, I wasn’t sure we’d depart at all. So I guess, in that sense, I’m glad I’m here.

Then again, “here” is Milwaukee. Where it’s 45 degrees — 45 degrees! — and windy and foggy and raining. It might be possible to find a bleaker setting in April in the Northern Hemisphere. Then again, it might not.

I mentioned the weather to Dominique Wilkins. “What do you expect?” he said. “It’s Milwaukee. It’s just … dreary.”

Students of history will note that I, M. Bradley, was in this city last month to cover Georgia Tech in the NCAA tournament. And it snowed then. But somehow you expect snow in a Midwestern city in March. It’s now spring. And it’s a balmy 48 degrees. Give me a break.

About the series: It has been a bore. The Hawks won the first two games easily, and at issue tonight is whether the Bucks can win the game that keeps them from getting swept. They’re passing out red towels at the Bradley Center that read, “Fear the Deer,” but I don’t believe the Hawks arrived shaking in their sneakers. (Shivering from the cold, perhaps. But not from terror.)

The Hawks’ dressing room is scheduled to open in five minutes, so I’ll duck down there and see if anyone appears to be suffering from a phobia of antlered beasts. I’ll check back momentarily. And send some hot chocolate, would you?

Update from the Hawks’ locker room: Not much to report. (At playoff time, no news is always good news.) Mike Woodson said: “I like the way we handled our business at home. Now we’ll see what we can do here.”

Woodson also had this observation: “It was 39 degrees when we got on our bus this morning [for shootaround].” Then he laughed. Or maybe he just shivered.

Kudos, NoShamSam.

I’m agnostic about the red uniforms. They look OK to me. Not great, but OK.

If the players wore rosaries with their red uniforms, would you be less agnostic?

Or would you be pragmatic and recommend they save them for the Orlando series?

I became agnostic on uniforms when Georgia broke out the black helmets for Florida last season.

What’s funny is that the Bucks are calling for a “red out” tonight, and the Hawks will be wearing their red uniforms. Almost like they’re the home team.

Mark do you ever wonder if anybody, ironically enough, became agnostic on uniforms from looking at the old San Diego Padres uniforms?

Hey, the Hawks are 2-0 in a series that’s all but a foregone conclusion. Got to talk about something, right?

I’m staying in the same hotel that left me cold (pun intended) during the NCAA tournament. You might recall that this particular establishment doesn’t offer room service for lunch. Nor, I learned today, is its restaurant downstairs open for late lunches. (No, this is not Motel 6.)

But I mention the hotel because it’s a block from the arena, and you know what jerseys I saw people wearing in the lobby? Cubs shirts. The Cubbies are in town to play the Brewers.

As a Hawks fan, it feels really good to confidently look down on another team. I wasn’t so sure in last year’s Miami series, and I’m too young (or too old) to remember that feeling from the Dominique days.

NoShamSam

April 24th, 2010

In the Dominique days, 5iml, L. Bird & co was just too much for us

Mark Bradley

April 24th, 2010
6:44 pm

Even in the Dominique days, 5IML, the Hawks never swept anybody in Round 1. (And never got past Round 2.) Indeed, the last gasp of that team was a loss in a best-of-5 series to an undermanned Milwaukee bunch in 1989. They lost Game 5 at home — first rounds were best-of-five back then — after the Bucks had blown a lead and seemingly the series in Game 4 here. (Jack Sikma missed a free throw that would have won in regulation.)

I’m not totally surprised by how were playing, but I’m still extremely upset. I very angry that we don’t get the ball to Smoove in the post on every possession. He’s either going to get doubled or get a shot at the basket. Even if Mbah a Moute is on Smoove, you give him the ball. JJ’s going to have a weaker defender on him. We’ve got to play better defensive.

Scott Skiles said before the game that he wasn’t “thrilled” about the layoff before Game 3.

That said, the Hawks are playing like dogs. Stupid, lazy and unfortunately, all-too-predictable.

Skiles vs. Mike Woodson is no contest. Give them the same team to coach and Skiles would finish an 82-game season at least 20 games ahead of Woodson.

I hope Mr. Bradley pillories Woodson after the game. First Q. should be: “Mike, knowing this ensemble’s record on the road during the playoffs, didn’t you have any sort of original thought about motivating them to come out with a little fire?”

What dogs.

U can put them in but not for extended minutes.. this offseason they need to learn how to play with each other… ive never seen zaza horford and josh in at the sametime, so why use this lineup in the PLAYOFFS?? That just doenst make sense… why sit crawford out for the rest of the half?? he’s the offense we need to get back into the game. Bibby gets tired QUICK seems like to me.. Another shining example of mediocre expectations from the top on down. ASG thinks it’s great to make the playoffs, collect some extra playoff revenue then go home. Mike Woodson is a mediocre coach who once again has failed to get his team ready to play. A committed team would have come out and blown the Bucks out of their arena, making them expend the energy to come back then fold at the end. Instead it’s the ATL that’s gonna do it, if they even bother to make a comeback. It sucks being mediocre but that’s what we as fans are stuck with. ASG is no more capable of producing a winner than the Five Smiths Inc. were. At least we have Arthur Blank around to keep ATL from being a total Losersville in the sports world.

Why is it that when the ESPN announcers(or most anyone else) mentions the Hawks being a horrible road team when you consider their talent, no one calls out Woodson? The Hawks have two guys who made the all–star team, another that should have and the 6th man of the year and this is the best they can do against a glorified d-league team? Disgraceful.

Woodson is a joke. I don’t care if Milwaukee comes back to win the series. At that point, we’ll at least know Woodson will be gone and they might bring in a real coach.

Here’s another point about this shiftless bunch of bums:

When a Joakim Noah makes a comment about Cleveland,
it’s coming from a fellow who speaks French, Swedish and English fluently and has seen the world.

When a career burp like Josh Smith makes a comment
about Milwaukee, it’s coming from some stooge who wouldn’t know how to find Peachtree St. if he hadn’t
followed the boys on to the team bus.

The Bucks would do the NBA a huge favor if they
just knock out this roving band of swill in six games.

Mike Woodson’s scheme isnt good for this team. For his scheme to work u need great iso players. josh and marvin and bibby are not those. horford joe and craword are. 93-65? Wow this is so pathetic. In game 3 u usually want to make it really competative so you can wear them out for game 4. Jennings is laughing on the bench and doesnt even have toplay the whle 4th. Now we got to worry about jennings doing the same thing he did tonight in game 4. Joe brought it tonight but was the ONLY one. Josh Smith is so pathetic at times its scary. He gets to shooting jumpers and going to the hole out of control. Right now you would have to say the bucks are the favorites for game 4. Right?

Problem is this team isnt REALLY a contender. I wish we were, but we arent. It would take A TON of luck for this team to make it to the finals.
Bigger problem is our best player, on this team that isnt even a contender, wont be back. Even biger problem is the ownership group will not open the pocket book to replace our best player with another max contract player. Next year our 6th man of the year will be the starter, and we will bring in a couple of bench players.
Given these factors, I dont know if it matters if Woody, Avery Johnson, or John Wooden coaches this team next year. Whoever it is, they wont have a top player that will allow them to finish in the top 4, and will be lucky to make the playoffs.
I dont like it, but thats how I see it.

Its preparation by the coaching staff, you can even see no emotion from the coaching staff.
Players feed off their coach and game plan. Mike Woodson is a mediocre coach. Good enough to get by, but to take this team to the next level, I seriously doubt it. Alot of talent on the Hawks, bad coaching, Van Gundy would be a great replacement for this team, way better coach than Woodson.

If you want to write something to get their attention, IMHO, you do it so that will be what they see on in the paper the day they get back to the airport from Milwaukee.
