Strange homestand. The Braves have been shut out twice and no-hit once over these five games. On Sunday they were an out away from losing 3-2, and two nights ago they were an out away from losing 3-0. And yet they’ve won three times in five.

They’ve done it with two bursts of late-inning lightning, sure, but they’ve also done it with pitching. The Braves’ starting pitchers have managed only one win this homestand — that by Derek Lowe against Colorado on Friday in a game he led 7-0 after two innings — but they’ve kept their team close in every game except Saturday’s, which was the night Kenshin Kawakami worked against no-hit Ubaldo Jimenez.

Throw out that game and the Braves’ starting pitchers have yielded 10 earned runs in four starts against two good-hitting teams this homestand. And that is, I submit, what will have to keep the Braves close if they’re going to make a race of it — pitching.

The Braves are hitting .227 as a team. That’s second-worst in the National League. That will improve over time — it has to improve, does it not? — but this lineup isn’t apt to hit .270 all summer. Too many holes, as we’ve noted a time or two before.

But the lesson of three wins in five games is that pitching is the great equalizer. The Braves haven’t hit much this homestand — 33 hits and 17 runs in five games — but they haven’t let the other guys hit much, either. (The Rockies and Phillies have mustered 35 hits and 17 runs between them.) Tonight Lowe starts against Jamie Moyer, and Lowe is 3-0.

And I’ll be here all night, watching and reporting and typing and chattering away. I’d be obliged if you’d join me, and I should note that the four previous games we’ve done this the home team has prevailed. With two walk-off wins. With three wins in the final at-bat. With Jason Heyward having an RBI in all four games. As Kate Smith was to the Philly Flyers, I am to the 2010 Bravos.

If Eric H. is not in the lineup tonight, Booby needs his head examined. The cat is raking it everytime he gets a chance. We will hang around the bottom of the league in hitting until the braves hire J-Heys personal hitting coach to replace TP…

Heyward is hitting seventh tonight, FYI.

Braves lineup: Diaz, Prado, Jones, McCann, Glaus, Escobar, Heyward, Cabrera, Lowe.

Martin Prado is hitting .400. Heyward is at .286. Five starting Braves (Lowe included) are at .200 or below.

Talking with Chip Caray before the game — good guy, Chip — and he noted something I completely missed: The Braves have only three weekend home series against NL East competition. Two of those are against Florida in midsummer; the third is against Philly on the final weekend. From a gate-attraction standpoint, that’s a bad home schedule.

And then factor in the AL teams that come here this season: Tampa Bay, Kansas City and Detroit. Not exactly the Yankees and the Red Sox.

well, lowe coughing up runs….you can’t say you didn’t see that coming. but being dominated by a 47 year-old? this line up is really struggling. they have only scored. in two of the last 20 innings. and even then, it was all homeruns. this team doesn’t seem to be able to manufacture ANY runs. this is frustrating to watch.

This team is pathetic. They are lucky to get even one game considering they were 1 out from losing the first. And without that burst, they would be scoreless in 21 innings against the phils. Get rid of TP. He is imo a big problem. Double plays with the bases loaded. This is the worst team in getting runs home while in scoring position. How old is moyer and he’s making us look like this. What a joke this team is. I feel sorry for Heyward having to play on this crappy team.

MyPatooti

I take back everything I said about the Braves after that dramatic 9th inning win on Monday. These last two games cancels that one out completely for me. After you win a game like that, and then you come out the next two days looking like crap!!! It’s nothing more than the SOBs (same ol Braves) this year. I thought it was going to be different but I give up already!!! Where’s their spirt? Where’s their life? It’s even boring. BTW, that error should have been on Escobar. That ball was catchable and close enough to turn two. He just flat missed it. It hit his glove. Bad call !!!!!

I just think that over the course of 162 games, Philly has more talent than us. They have won three straight divisions, and are the team to beat. My call: The Braves have the potential to have a good season, but the wild card would be a more realistic scenario.

Great offseason pick ups by Wren in Glaus and Cabrera. Their combined averages are less than Prado. Great job by Wren picking up McLouth as well.

The guy doesn’t have a clue as to what constitutes a good offense. Melky has just been terrible and anybody that blames losses on Cox right now is fooling themselves.

Meanwhile, Schuerholz should not be spared after the idiotic final move he made completely flushing the system of Andrus, Neftali Feliz, Matt Harrison, and Saltalamacchia for 1 year of Teixiera when he knew we would not have the finances to re sign him anyways.

After the emotional highs of the last Rockies game and the opener against the Phillies with stunning rallies, I think reality is beginning to set back in. This is a very poor Braves team offensively. When you start getting most of your runs in an unearned manner and look at a walk as a huge moral victory, double plays are killing any potential hope of a big inning time and time again, and over half your lineup is hitting below .250 at this point in the season, you’re in trouble.

The Braves’ pitching will likely keep them in most ballgames, but that is only because it is very good overall. But with this offense they’ll be fortunate to win many games where their opponents score more than three runs. They simply cannot wait for much longer for so many guys (including three recent acquisitions, McClouth, Cabrera, and Glaus) to start producing consistently, or they’ll fall way out of the race by early summer.

I haven’t lost hope for this year obviously, but then again I don’t see this team realistically getting close to the playoffs if things remain as they are now. I’m definitely counting down to when Liberty Media’s tax writeoff ends. Then perhaps we’ll see some genuinely sensible and interested personnel moves by the ownership and front office.

SS–Slow start for Yunel, but he’s quality

3B—Thanks for the memories Chipper, but it’s time to go

C—McCann is good, but he’s overrated

OF–We’ve got the phenom, and nothing else. Nate sucks, and Melky & Matt are utility players….2 out of the 3 outfield positions are ridiculously horrible

If that is the case, A) do you think it’s likely they’ll sell the team (and HOPEFULLY to a human, competent ownership) and B) do you think the Braves are a “lame duck” this season with regard to trading for needed bats? My reasoning being that if they’re going to dump the team anyway, why spend money to make them as competitive as possible even if they’re in the thick of it?

Phils set em up and knock em down. Workman-like domination. No post season for the Braves this year. Too many good teams in the NL.

So…maybe all that talk after Sunday and Tuesday about the “vibe” and “feeling” around the time was premature?

Chip – I agree that Glaus is terrible, but you are way off on B-Mac. He is one of the best catchers in baseball. Nate is a great defensive outfielder and is just off to a slow start. Remember we are only a few weeks into the season. Hopefully Melky will come around and Diaz is a solid every other day player. The Bravos have had great starting pitching thus far (except for J.J. in San Diego) and the bullpen has been excellent. We should challenge the Phillies for the East and at least get a Wild Card spot. GO BRAVOS!!!

Bobby, in his last year, and still doesn’t have the guts to break away from his obvious predictability.
Using a First baseman, who very fond of his bat and he’ll rest it on his shoulder, striking out three
time with men on base, but this is nothing new.
Once in a while his bat will get lucky and hit the ball, and if there is a blue moon he may hit a homer.
The moves that Cox makes is why he need to retired, and he
should take Pendleton with him. I hope Pendleton won’t try to help Heyward any, if he does the kid is cooked.
I wouldn’t say that the Braves are bad, maybe embarrassing, or a little sluggish, showing a lacking of the ability, that got them in the big leagues.
I’ve seem how some of the player run out a ground, a 4 years old will most likely get to first before they do.
They should take the 5 hour energy drink, or omeone needs to kick some tails. They are putting people asleep, it’s like wondering when a rock will give birth. This 2009 season is a long one…..
