Hewitt is staying: Tech fans, how do you feel? UPDATED

Georgia Tech has now confirmed that Paul Hewitt has turned down St. John’s. Here’s the school’s official statement:

Georgia Tech head basketball coach Paul Hewitt said Thursday afternoon that he will remain at the Institute and is no longer a candidate for the head coaching position at St. John’s University.

Hewitt, 46, just completed his 10th season at the helm of the Yellow Jackets’ program, guiding Tech to a 23-13 overall record. The Jackets advance to the championship game of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament and earned a berth in the NCAA Championship for the fifth time, where it defeated Oklahoma State in the first round before being eliminated by Ohio State.

“My family and I have developed deep ties to Georgia Tech and the city of Atlanta,” said Hewitt. “I strongly believe in what Georgia Tech can do for young people, and I am committed to returning the Tech basketball program to the level of success our fans have come to expect. We took a step in that direction this past season, and I fully intend to continue on that path.”

Hewitt, who has record of 177-144 at Georgia Tech, ranks third among active coaches in the ACC in games coached and fourth in career victories. He ranks 18th in career victories all-time. He has taken the Yellow Jackets to six post-season berths, including one NIT appearance, twice to the championship game of the ACC Tournament and the championship of the 2003 Preseason NIT.

“I think what has transpired over the last few days speaks volumes about Paul Hewitt and about Georgia Tech,” Tech director of athletics Dan Radakovich said. “Paul’s credentials as a human being, a family man, a leader and a builder of character are impeccable. All of us at Georgia Tech are committed to assist him in providing an outstanding men’s basketball program.”

If you’re a Tech fan, how do you feel? Relieved that your coach is staying? Disappointed that he’s staying?

My thoughts on what Hewitt staying would mean for him and Tech will be forthcoming, but I’d be obliged to hear yours. Thanks in advance.

Remember how Steve Spurrier once said of Ray Goff that he keeps getting great recruits but something happens to them when they get to Athens? I think Hewitt reminds me of that.

Its a safe bet that most Tech fans are sick over this development. We have just been stunted at least two more years before we can begin to rebuild our program. Hey look on the bright side…we should finish 11th or 12th in the ACC this year and losing to NC state wont be an upset. Oh well

Dang. We’re still stuck with the perma-contract. That’s the problem here. Hewitt good or bad, having a contract like that on the books is bad business. Dave Braine, I have no more words.

There will be plenty of room to spread out in the stands at GT BB games next year. No sitting elbow-to-elbow with other fans. Just like 1976.

[...] Update: Apparently it’s a moot point now: ESPN and the New York Daily News are reporting that Paul Hewitt has turned down St. John’s and is staying at Georgia Tech. [...]

what does this say about his thought process ? Is he staying to prove the fans wrong or is he staying because of the sweet never ending contract ? He will say its because of his family and love of georgia tech but wouldn’t it make more sense to go home where you and your family are from ?
i think its because of the never ending contract he knows he gets 7 million or whatever it is when he wears out his welcome.

It’s OK – this current bunch must be some anomaly of basketball, all talent, no heart, less brains. Hewitt can’t inbound and pass for them, and he can’t make foul shots for them.

Of course it's the contract

Didn’t Paul Johnson start out coaching High School basketball? Why doesn’t DRad double his salary and let him coach both football and basketball?

As an alumni
of St. John’s University, I have heard many names been thrown around for our vacant men’s basketball position. In my opinion, I think that the Red Storm should hire current ESPN Analyst, Steve Lavin. He has a great resume and will help rebuild St. John’s into a powerhouse.

I found this link, http://lavin4redstorms.com/, that some students at SJU have setup for Lavin’s support. Your thoughts on Lavin @ SJU?

What a let down. I thought the stars had aligned to move on and get some excitement back in the program again. Maybe another ten years of bad basketball will pass and we can keep talking about recruiting.

South GA Dawg Fan-

I think it’s gotta be the $7 million. He knows the alumni are calling for his head, and who knows what kind of jobs will be available when that (finally) happens? Certainly not St. John’s. No, this was his opportunity to choose his own destiny and go home as a hero rather than get fired and go somewhere else as a re-tread. He took the money route.

St Johns has better Lawyers than Tech. They don’t offer never ending contracts and they don’t pay other schools $3.5 Million for the privalege of hiring their worn out coaches.

The quality of the coach is debatable, but the quality of the contract is not. It’s a bad contract for Tech, and I wanted to be relieved of that more than anything else. It seems like a lifetime contract, which is impossible to justify. Our hands remain tied. I feel sorry for DRad.

That’s the problem. Hewitt brought in Shumpert to be that point guard. He can’t blame a GM for draft or trading for bad players. Hewitt is GM and coach all rolled into one. Shumpert is his guy, so he either misjudged the talent or can’t coach it up.

And one more note: IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THIS YEAR! Hewitt’s 10-year record is abysmal. Even when we’re squeaking into the tourney, it’s with a conference record of 8-8 or 7-9, a bad seed, and an early exit. The exception was the Finals run, where we had (I believe) a #4 seed off of a 9-7 ACC season (his only winning season in conference!). Oh, and we had Jarrett Jack, who was essentially a coach on the floor to make up for Hewitt’s offensive deficiencies. I hope Hewitt is sending Jack royalty checks.

When you publicly flirt with another girl- it kills your credibility with your wife/girlfriend.

Paul is going to have less support that what little he had now. He needs to only say positives about Georgia Tech and what he doing to address the turnovers.

After that he needs to shut up and prove all his critics wrong. If not- he is in for a miserable existence.

I am sick and tired of this, on the same level as Gailey, except this has gone on longer. If there are no changes to the program, I am done with this C R @ P. I thank Hewitt for 2004 but 6 yrs later I am so beyond this mess. Why in hell would anyone leave a rollover? My finger is going to start pointing in the direction of GTAA, if they do not override some decisions and let CPH have full reign

How do I feel? I feel like a hostage to this man. I’m sick of his mediocre performance, his excuses, his unwillingness to take responsibility for anything, and the arrogance that underlies it all.

Coach Hewitt, please understand. ALMOST NOBODY wants you to be our coach anymore. You are ONLY here because of your ridiculous contract. Your continued employment is bad for our basketball program and bad for our school. You are too selfish to do what’s right and resign honorably. Ultimately, we will only be rid of you by paying a $7 million ransom. That’s money that could be used to help our athletic programs by building facilities and paying coaches who have the desire and ability to succeed at Georgia Tech.
