Milwaukee — OK, here’s the plan. We’re going to tip off our NCAA tournament coverage with a live chat off the afternoon games, same as we did a year. As some of you might recall, last year’s chatting was done from my house.
Some might also recall the action photo of my propped-up feet. (For reasons unclear, y’all found this the height of hilarity.) Far be it from me to flout tradition, so I offer another action shot of MB’s tootsies, only this time the venue has changed. I’m ensconced in my plushly appointed hotel across the street from the arena where Georgia Tech will hold an open practice later today.
Because I need to wander over for that — you never know when the coach might say something nice about the media — we won’t make this an all-day affair. We’ll start around 12:15 p.m. EDT — I’m on CDT, FYI — and we’ll go until the opening games of the day are done.
We can talk about the ongoing games, if you’d like, but we can also broaden our horizons. You can ask me about Tech, about Tech’s coach, about Bradley’s Bracket Fiasco (nee Final Four Fiasco). Heck, you can ask me about Dunta Robinson or Josh Smith or Jason Heyward. I’m in an expansive mood, and I’ll be happy to converse for the next 3 1/2 hours. Join me, won’t you?
But give me a few minutes first. I have an appointment for a pedicure.

Here's my new location: Major Goolsby, a sports bar across the street. (Photo by M. Bradley)

Mark, coach is going to say nice things about you today…I can just feel it. Just please don’t call this team talented. And, remember this is a young inexperienced team even though they Bell and Peacock are seniors and Lawal and Miller are juniors. AND, PLEASE NEVER BRING UP MONEY OR SAY CONTRACT. BADBADBADBADBADBADBADBADBADBAD COACHING PAUL HEWITT!!!
Your telling me these guys have been playing all year together and now at Tourney time there feeling like a team!!! Then georgia tech rewards this guy with an extension!!! The first sign of a bad coach is not building TEAM UNITY…..!!!! The best coaches set precedent by this rule..That explains team’s selfishness at times…that explains the negative body language and tension. That explains why Hewitt is a great NBA Type recruit and not a winning college coach!!! It seems he has allowed the culture of self to takeover….This explains wasted talent….and yes Tech plays selfish b.ball especially on the offensive end. He cant win because he cant build teams thus explains his low winning percentage. Its official GT is now a football school…R.I.P GT BASKETBALL.
GT better win Friday…If not I hope the kids embelish in the moment because after Favors and Lawal leave GT will defeinetly not see the ncaa tourney next year..unless they expand the tourney!! And they might not make it then!!! Damn I cant believe GT is rewarding this guy!!!

Thank you MB. A whole Madness article without mentioning Obama and his bracket. You’re a better man then Schultz…Here’s what I blogged about Schultz’s article. I’m sorry…but this whole Obama and who he’s picking is driving me crazy!!!
******
PS: Jeff…we read the sports page so that maybe SOMEWHERE we don’t get Obama and how great he is shoved into our faces. Please leave him out. I’m just suprised Obama did say that some schools have an unfair advantage and we need to “redistribute” the players so everyone could be a winner…oh, wait…winners aren’t allowed anymore, I forgot. Participation Trophies for EVERYONE!!! No winners, no losers. Competition and excellence based on performance is something Obama and Dems are totally against…so why does his bracket even matter?

Mark, since you mention Dunte Robinson…at least a couple guys on the NFL network, including former GM Michael Lombardi, say the Falcons way over-paid for him. Hewitt had a team with that much talent. And they lost to UConn in the finals. Maybe not the size presence in the post as those Gators team but they could run and jump and they had enough deep shooting (thank you Marvin Lewis) and a helluva point guard. Plus, they had depth and grit.

Greg, it’s a rule of professional sports: You always overpay for free agents. Stan Kasten once explained it to me: The team the guy is leaving had the best measure of his value, having seen him every day, and if he won’t take their offer then he’s going to get overpaid.
That said, I think if the Falcons were going to overpay for any position, cornerback would have been the one.

BYU is letting the Gators hang around to much. I hope the NCAA fool don’t think that 96 teams would make this Turny better. Only small market TV area would watch some of these games today anyway. If they add 32 more teams I would wait until my team playerd or just the Sweet 16 games. High School Baseballs games would be more fun to watch.

Mark – Don’t back down! Great endings do not mean the games were great. ND/ODU was an absolutely boring but close game. UF/BYU was poorly played. Gators couldn’t hit a shot. They were close, which makes them exciting at the end, but that doesn’t mean they were great games. Nova/RM was a good game, but not great.

Predictability? Well, I did predict each outcome — that means I’ll miss the next 50 — but the Mountain West was a very strong league this season, and I’m not sure Florida wasn’t the worst at-large to get in. And Notre Dame was running on fumes. And Villanova was 4-6 over its final 10 games, and it nearly went to 4-7.

Dude, you name dropped Carlos Strong MB, providing me with the perfect segue into my personal Carlos Strong story. I don’t think SI will pay for it, so buried in the comments section of an AJC blog is exactly where I’ll publish it.
I bartend at a bowling alley in Athens. Strong owns the bar across the way. We have a healthy mix of college kids, hipsters, families and blue-collar types and his bar attracts a mostly urban crowd. It’s totally harmonious and it makes for a great place to work and people watch. Anyway, we get a lot of business from his bar because we have a kitchen. One Saturday, well after midnight, a gentleman that grew up with Strong –and knows a good margarita when he’s served one (or three)– proceeded to tell me a story about Carlos jumping over a car -lengthwise- in high school. McDonalds should make that a prerequisite to being an All-American, or create a separate “Strong All-American” uber class.
I do not have a Jumaine Jones story, yet.
When you are in Athens, GA get in touch with me so that I may assist you in a guest blogger capacity. We’ll undoubtedly be an effective tour de force on the Internet among sports fans as I too have photogenic feet.
