Live from G-Tech vs. V-Tech: It’s NOT an elimination game

Here's what it's all about, folks. (Bracket courtesy of ESPN.com)

Here's what it's all about, folks. Eight days until the invitations are extended. (Bracket courtesy of ESPN.com)

There are those who’ll disagree, but I don’t believe Georgia Tech would be in dire straits, Dance-wise, if it loses today. As I’ve mentioned a time or two, I’m fairly certain the Yellow Jackets can finish 7-9 in regular-season ACC play and still make the field of 65 on the strength of their schedule and RPI. And this will sound strange, but here goes:

G-Tech, which will finish behind Virginia Tech in the ACC, is in better shape than the Hokies. If V-Tech loses here today, it’s in real trouble. If G-Tech loses, it’s in less.

At this moment, Joe Lunardi of ESPN.com lists G-Tech as a No. 10 seed in his updated Bracketology and V-Tech as a No. 11. Yes, the Hokies are 9-6 in the conference to the Jackets’ 7-8, but the NCAA committee cares less about standings than it does about SOS and RPI. And there’s your difference: V-Tech has an RPI of 55 and a SOS of 155; G-Tech has an RPI of 35 and an SOS of 18.

Put simply, V-Tech needs to beat somebody with a good RPI these next eight days to make the field. G-Tech needs only to win another game — and that victory can come either today or in Greensboro next Thursday — to make sure. And even if it loses both, G-Tech could still be invited to the only tournament that matters.

Maybe you shrugged when G-Tech beat Siena on Dec. 2, but the Saints have an RPI of 40. V-Tech, by way of contrast, played a non-conference schedule that included Brown, UNC Greensboro, Campbell, Delaware, Iowa (RPI of 195), Georgia (RPI of 95), VMI, Penn State, Charleston Southern, Maryland-Baltimore County, Longwood, Seton Hall (RPI of 56) and North Carolina Central. The Hokies did play Temple (RPI of 15) but lost.

And it isn’t as if Virginia Tech hasn’t been warned. It was snubbed 2008 after going 9-7 in the ACC because it played a weak non-conference slate. That came after coach Seth Greenberg contended, after a last-second loss to North Carolina in the ACC semis, that anyone who didn’t consider his Hokies an NCAA tournament team was “certifiably insane.”

But on every Selection Sunday, the chairman of that year’s committee tells Jim Nantz and Billy Packer the same thing: The committee’s advice is to go out and play someone good. G-Tech scheduled better than V-Tech. That’s why, eight days from Selection Sunday, GT is better situated than VPI.

With that, I’d be happy — nay, thrilled — to accept any and all questions, comments and predictions on tomorrow night’s Academy Awards. I’ll be here until we’re done with Tech-versus-Tech, and I’d be happy — nay, thrilled — if you’d join me. And yet again I thank you in advance.

With the unbalanced schedule in the ACC, Big East, etc. conference W-L records are not as good an indicator of how teams compare. Before the ACC expansion, the round-robin home and away was a good indicator.

GT will win if it keeps pounding the ball to its big men

I would say that this is generally the case with GT basketball since about 2005. And 2002-2004, GT had at least one very good big man…Ed Nelson, Bosh, Schenscher, and Ish played like an offensively challenged big man who gets all his points on offensive rebounds and put backs.

These days…losing by 10 to VT, even though GT has taken 8 more shots, has 7 offensive rebounds to VT’s 0, GT is +4 in turnovers.

Tom

4:47 pm

Mark they don’t need to shoot 55% anyway. 45% would be enough for a 8 point win. Did you see Morrow light it up last night for GS here? Another techster doing well in the nba who did nothing here. The only reason gt did well in 04 was their guard play. They got hot. And you can win a few games when you get hot and a little lucky. Since then you’ve seen what kind of coach Hewitt is. He really has no idea how to coach. And Luoisville winning today put them in the tourney. That will knock out the loser of this. ND winning probably knocks out both unless gt wins today(not likely) and then wins at least 2 in the acc tourney.

Somebody OTHER THAN a freshman (Rice or Oliver) needs to be guarding Delaney. Maybe Shump or Bell should draw that duty. Help defense on the penetration has been slower than usual.

Resign or Resign? I never said Gailey was fired that same year. I’m saying that it takes multiple years for a school like Tech to absorb the financial hits big time coaching changes cause. Forget 2009…..part of the reason Tech can’t fire Hewitt after this season is because of the hiring of CPJ. There’s only so much money in the bank.

Good coaches make teams better for being on the sidelines. (see Paul Johnson) Bad coaches will actually bring the talent down. I don’t want to banish Hewitt, I want Hewitt to get in some grills and start coaching. This is not a rebuilding year. Even Gailey never was sub .500 in conference, and he was shown the door. It is time for Hewitt to go. He has destroyed everything that Bobby built here and has made a great venue that use to rock into very little if any home court advantage. Mark, you are wrong about this NOT being an elimination game. At best, if Tech was still in, they would be an 11. There are ALWAYS teams from mid majors that are going to the NCAA”s if they blow their tournament. This means GONZAGA, BUTLER, NO IOWA , ODU and possibly UTAH ST are in that category. Now, if the A-10 has a 4th or 5th team playing well in the A-10 try, that’s another one or two. CAL better win the Pac 10. UTEP is in, but if Memphis and UAB BOTH make the CUSA final, that could be another one making 3 from CUSA. Notre Dame today makes it 8 from the Big East…..NCAA looks at teams playing well over the last 12. GT is 5-7 with a 2-5 over last 7.( Guess that is what Hewitt meant when he said Tech is playing their best). Most likely, 4 or 5 of those teams I listed lose their tourneys or play their way in. Tech would be in that first 4 OUT category……fact Hewitt could not get this talented team to even finish 8-8 is indicative of his coaching the last 5 years. UNless Tech WINS TWO in ACC, they are out. Today would have probably clinched an NCAA berth. The fact Tech came out so flat is coaching. Hewitt has been known to use his TO”s horribly. But why he let the team fall 16 down in such a crucial game without calling another TO is beyond me. Wonder how good Favors would have been this year if he had good coaching? BTW, Lawal is not as good as hyped. He struggles vs players who are his size and physical. Fl St and VT’s Allen showed this. That is why he was on the bench during Tech’s comeback.

I just don’t see this team having any chemistry and that’s not coaching. Some of these McD all americans are not ready for this level, much less the next level.

I told DRAD not to be pressured by public opinion, he needs to do what HE thinks is best for GT.

@south,

True, but when lack of chemistry is almost a constant over a decade (vice one year), then we have to wonder why the coach has not been able to establish some sort of continuity, chemistry, and stability in the program. For years now, every game we play looks like a pickup game between guys who just met and barely know each other.

When a program brings in talent like that found here, but each season ends with the same mediocre-or-below results, then there’s a real problem of organizational leadership.

Blewitt keeps blowing and I keep getting more rich!!!! Why hasn’t the country figured out to bet against Blewitt on every ACC road game (every big road game for that matter). I am glad most people in the country think this guy still has a clue what he is doing, keep those spreads low for me. Also today I bet for the first time against Blewey on a home game this year. Why? It was a must win so I knew ol’ Paul would come through with a certain loss.

I am trying to figure out which basketball figure is a bigger joke: Blewitt or Stegasaurus. Funny how both will be thrown money they dont deserve next year, and of course this $$ will be an absolute waste. Worse than Obama’s bailout that was not going to allow unemployment to creep above 10%. Funny it did and has maintained a level over 10% ever since. Keep pi$$ing the money away Obama, GT, and UGAy.

I started disliking Blewitt 5 years ago when it became painfully obvious he had no clue how to devise a game plan and excute said plan. Since then my dislike slowly grew. However, this year it has hit the apex of dislike. He somehow attributes the underachieving play to Mark Bradley, the AJC and the fans???? Not only that he has used the same 3-4 excuses EVERY SINGLE YEAR. After every game he gives the same BS answers to questions, its like he just reads off a telepromter (another similarity to Obama) that hasnt been updated in 10 years. Due to all this I will be rooting against this team in both the first round of the ACC and NIT tourneys, and hopefully we get rid of the city’s biggest criminal KINGPIN

I cannot believe I spent two hours of my life waiting for a different outcome. It is time for change! This team might make it to the NCAA Tournament but it is definitely not playing well. It is a sad state of GT Basketball. There is no reason for GT to be in this position with all the recruiting talent. Is it the talent or the coach that is the problem? I’ll let that for someone else to decide. All I know is that, personally, this is not a basketball team playing at the level it needs to be playing. This makes it very frustrating as a GT fan. I hope that something good happens next week at the ACC Tournament. This is only HOPE of course because at this point I’m not conviced otherwise. This reminds me of Chan Gailey. Mediocracy from year to year. The only difference is that we seem to have more talent this year when it comes to basketball and the outcome is the same; below .500 in the ACC regular season. I’m frustrated!!!!!! I’ll leave it at that….

south….that’s true, there won’t be any coaching change this year. This is 2009-10. Next year is 2010-11. Sorry, but the coach has to take some accountability when he only has one winning sesaon in the ACC. Think that NC 2005 year has used up all of its grace. 6-34 in ACC road games last 5 years. Best ACC mark of 7-9. That gets about 98 % of coaches fired with same record over 5 years.

MB, I think Seth is correct, in that I think Tech has the TALENT to make a deep run in the tournament. I just don’t think they have the leadership to get them there. I admit that I haven’t seen many Tech games in the past two years, but I have followed the Jackets on AJC.com. Unfortunately, I did see today’s game with VT. I just have two questions which I hope someone in the AD department is thinking about:
1) Does GT have any offense other than “the first person who gets open, shoot a three”? I understand when you get 16 points behind, but this was in the first half!
2) Is there ever any thought of an adjustment when your defense is obviously not working? Dave Odom mentioned this during the first half as Delaney and others continued to make 3-point shots.
p.s. Paul, I thought the gold lining on the jacket was a good touch. Good luck with that!

Missed the game, but by reading the posts and the boxscore, probably good I did or it would have been just more frustration. At this point, I don’t really care if they make it or not. Tired of seeing them lose to inferior teams due to poor shooting and poor coaching. It would be a joke if they don’t get in though. There are not 65 teams in the country better than Tech, and I know thats not how the tourney works before some nitwit points that out.
