Rx for Hewitt: Coach more, Tweet less (new Tweets added)

Here's "GTCoachHewitt", perhaps pondering his next Tweet. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

I understand what Paul Hewitt is trying to do. He’s trying to foment belief in a team that, after losing four times in six games, has cause to doubt. But I’m not sure Twitter is the vehicle for that. I’m not sure a coach who’s under .500 in a diluted ACC with three McDonald’s All-Americans in his first five needs to be daring Georgia Tech fans to prove their fanhood.

Tech folks have been patient with Hewitt. He hasn’t won an NCAA tournament game since 2005. He has had four losing seasons in his first nine years on the job. He has a losing record against Georgia. Since Tech played for the national championship in April 2004, his record is 96-86 overall and 35-58 in ACC regular-season play. At a place that cared deeply about the sport, he’d have been gone long ago, his $7 million golden parachute  absorbed as the cost of doing business in big-time basketball.

But he’s still here. Does he have critics? Yes. (I know. I’m one.) Is he booed when introduced before home games? Not so you’d notice. (And I try to notice.) But when a coach challenges his constituency on his Twitter account, it’s a signal he’s feeling the heat. A sampling of Hewitt’s latest Tweets, all offered in the past three days:

• Clearly we are playing our best basketball of the season. Don’t believe what you read from the “experts.” Believe what you see.

• As we are coming to the latter part of the season, now is not the time to be judgmental. You all need to come out and support this team.

• Are you a critic or a supporter of this team? Supporters will continue to watch this team fight.

• To you critics: when athletes say some of the things you say, then you condemn them as quitters. Are you quitting?

• I believe in this team!

And here are three that arrived Thursday afternoon:

• Our team deserves to be treated truthfully. This young basketball team is on the verge of earning an NCAA [berth].

• We realize we still have work to do but no one should ever question the effort, intelligence, or dedication of our program.

• Their effort and level of commitment should never be questioned.

I don’t think anyone is questioning the team. (Questioning the coach, yes. Is that not allowed?) But saying the Jackets deserve “to be treated truthfully”? Has someone miscalculated the record? Is Tech really 25-2?

And that tired old bit about this being a “young basketball team”? Tech starts a fifth-year senior, a junior and a sophomore. Its sixth man is a senior. In contemporary college basketball, that’s a fairly seasoned bunch.

But that’s not the way Hewitt sees it. Before practice Thursday, he told reporters that coverage of his team has been reduced to “cyberbullying.” He also claimed he hadn’t read the AJC since 2005 because the team that went to the ACC finals and lost to Louisville in Round 2 of the NCAA tournament was “absolutely bashed.” (Given that I covered the ACC tournament and the loss to Louisville, I assume he was referring to me.)

He also contended that the past 3 1/2 games have been the best stretch of Tech basketball in two years. Yet Tech has won only once in that span, and to claim that this team is better than last season’s isn’t saying much. Those Jackets were 2-14 in ACC play.

I should stipulate that, for as critical as I’ve been regarding Hewitt, he and I have never had a heated exchange. I was surprised he took umbrage at a question after Tech nearly wasted a 16-point lead against North Carolina State. He’s usually the essence of professionalism. But he has to know that this season is his last real chance to win back those who’ve lost faith in his stewardship. That said, do you win anyone back via a dare?

If it doesn't finish strong, what should Tech do with Hewitt?

Some folks laughed when, after losing at Maryland at the horn Saturday, Hewitt said he believed Tech was on the verge of something big. I didn’t. I remember how I laughed six years ago when, after a home loss to North Carolina State that took the Jackets’ ACC record to 6-7, Hewitt said Tech was “playing as well as anyone in the country.” But seven days later it won at Duke, and a month later it was in the Final Four.

Former assistant Dean Keener once told me: “You know Paul — he’s the most optimistic man in the world.” And I submit there is reason for Tech to keep the faith as it heads into March. It is playing better. It could well have a nice tournament run. But it isn’t “critics” and “experts” who have lost seven of the past 14 games. It’s Tech, as coached by Hewitt.

Believe what you see, Tweeted GTCoachHewitt, but I’m not sure he means that. Because some Tech rooters might say, “Know what I see? I see a coach who’s 6-7 with the most talented team in his league asking why I’m not rooting harder.”

That’s the trouble with a dare. Ask someone to look hard at your program and that someone might decide your program isn’t half what it should be. If several such someones band together, it might not be your program much longer.

Is there any way we can get Alex Montgomery and Bridgette Ardossi transferred to the guys’ team? Against UNC, these ladies combined to go 17 for 17 from the free throw line. Even on their best days, the men don’t come close to this level of performance. If we can’t move the ladies, can we at least get their COACH?!

No bad talk today. Iman played like Coach Roy thought he would when he recruited him for UNC.
Rice played like you would expect a starter should. Big guys blocking many.

One of these days these guys are going to put together a complete game with few TO’s and make their free shots (just like today) and whip the (name it) out of some unsuspecting team.

Please, no matter what it costs, get rid of this pathetic bozo Hewitt. How many crappy losing seasons does it take to convince the Tech administration that this jerk is not a college coach, and most certainly not an ACC coach.

Hewitt used to be an embarrassment. There’s not even a proper word to describe him now.

Never has anyone so incredibly incompetent gotten paid so much money to stink up the place.

With the Freshmen Tech has this year this program should have ranked in the top ten the entire year. I always thought it was the players but having watched Udofia (since middle school) and Favors (since Sophomore year of high school) and experienced what they can do and where they can take a team I know believe its Coach Hewitt. For one thing he panics too much during the game; calling timeouts when not needed case in point today with 2 seconds left and you leading why call a time out? You did not need it even if BC scored it would not had made a difference on the outcome of the game. He should do all the coaching at practice and just instruct what plays to run during the game. All that up and down is not necessary and in my opinion causes the guys to pull away. You yelling at them on national television makes me want to shut down not play harder for you because no matter what I do you still yell at me during the game. Mfon”s playing time is down drastically and Favors is still not as aggressive as he should be (my opinion). Hewitt needs to reevaluate his coaching style quickly. Team is too talent packed to not get a good tournament bid.

Coach Hewitt, you can’t coach a lick!!! What could Coach Fox at Georgia do with all of that talent that you have? And this is not a Georgi Vs. Georgia Tech thing! It is jus real evident that you need to be modeling for GQ or being a professional tweeter, because you damn sure can’t coach a lick!!!

Brother coaxed me into going to the BC game today with him. Heard neither boos nor cheers when Hewitt was announced. Lukewarm, non-sell out crowd. By the end, having given away 9 pts of a 16 pt lead and watching them fall apart at the end of a game that was never in doubt, there was that ol’ familiar inability to close which by now must be a mental spur in every Tech player’s psyche. Hewitt, good for you. You signed a contract that made you rich, wrecked Tech’s program, and soon you won’t even have to pretend to earn your money anymore. You may have gotten rich off of us, but you’re about to get fired and you will always be fired. It ain’t much, and it sure ain’t worth $7 million, but we’ll take it if we can get our BB program back.

After seeing Hewie run into the ref at the second half, I realized that there never were just 3 Stooges, there were 4: Curly, Larry, Moe, and Hewie. (Shemp was before my time.)

3 McDonald’s All-Americans on the roster, and Hewitt still can’t coach them up. He is a great recruiter, but a sub-par coach. Tech needs a coach that can get the most out of their players, like Mark Fox over at UGA. They were horrendous under Felton (minus the miracle run), but Fox has stepped in and coached up the 2, 3, and 4 stars into a solid team. With GT’s roster, he would make a run at the final four. We will NOT be a consistently good basketball team until Blewitt is gone.

cPH did “fuss” at the guys yesterday at the end of the game….I thought that was terrible timing.

However…..many Tech fans just love it when Johnson growls (even on national TV) at players.
So when cPH does it,it seems inappropriate. My opinion, both are inappropriate.

Let’s see….no blog for the ACC game Sat vs BC….Guess fairness doesn’t go both ways in journalism with the AJC. Hewitt is acting poorly as a coach with the tweets. But AJC not covering home game makes them look third rate. If you are going to bash a man in the news and claim you are only doing your job, it makes you look less credible when you don’t blog an ACC home game when you have been doing it all year.

Mark, do you think Tech could have 7 million of Obama’s stimulus package? It would allow one coach to retire and create several new coaching jobs. Personally, I would rather hire a super attorney who could find a defensible loophole in this contract. We could probably save at least 5 million that way.

If Tech was playing well under Hewitt, there would not be any criticism for him to mention. The record speaks for itself. If you go to the dance occasionally an lose when 65 teams are invited, that’s why we are complaining about him. The young team thing every year doesn’t cut it either.

I hope Tech makes the dance, does well, and still fires Coach Hewitt. It just needs to be done.

Hewitt is pehaps the best recruiter and worst coach in the league. I think that’s what you’re trying to say. He doesn’t like that type of talk because, well, you’re messing with his livelihood AND he’s an optimist with no time for critics.

Of course he reads the paper. That’s ridiculous babble.

Why don’t y’all just agree to disagree and not get so offended by each other’s opinions. They are what they are, opinions. Everyone’s got one. That’s mine.

hewitt isn’t the only GT basketball coach to embarass my alma mater on twitter lately.

check out this update from assistant coach darryl labarrie, who clearly has no better grasp on coaching young men (or using twitter) than does coach hewitt.

On a positive note, we had an Iman Shumpert sighting today. He played like the BIG guard, bullying the BC guards, that we need him to be!
