Jonathan Dwyer, Morgan Burnett and Derrick Morgan announce they're leaving Georgia Tech. Will two of them wind up being NFL first-rounders? (AJC photo by Vino Wong)
It’s just a mock draft, OK? It might not pan out. Still, if you’re a proud Georgia Tech fan, this is one to clip and save. (Or, seeing as how Sporting News Today is an online-only publication, to print, clip and save.)
Here’s the Sporting News Today pre-combine mock draft: The No. 2 overall pick (going to Detroit) is Derrick Morgan, the defensive end from Tech; the No. 12 overall pick (going to Miami) is Demaryius Thomas, the wide receiver from Tech. And now you’re asking: How long since we saw a local school produce two players in the draft’s top dozen?
Answer: Ten months. Matthew Stafford went No. 1 overall last April to Detroit, and Knowshon Moreno went 12th to Denver.
But wait! Sporting News also has Tech’s Jonathan Dwyer going to San Diego with the 28th pick in Round 1. (As you might have heard, the Chargers cut LaDainian Tomlinson.) So: How long since a local team had three first-rounders in one draft?
Since never.
Seeing Morgan slotted as No. 2 overall is a bit of a surprise, but only a bit: He has been projected at/near the top five since December. Seeing Thomas at No. 12 a week after he broke a bone in his foot during training in Arizona is a shock. But his whole rocket-up-the-draft-board trajectory has been remarkable. Nobody considered him a first-rounder in January.
Oh, and you’re asking: What of the Falcons? You won’t be shocked to hear that Sporting News has them taking a cornerback, though not Kareem Jackson of Alabama (the projected pick in Todd McShay’s latest mock draft on ESPN.com) and not Kyle Wilson of Boise State (the choice of ESPN’s Mel Kiper and SI.com’s Don Banks). SN goes with Patrick Robinson of Florida State.
Scouts Inc. rates Robinson the sixth-best corner and the 45th-best player in the draft. (Link requires registration.) Taking him with the 19th (or 20th) pick might seem a reach. But that’s why mocks are such fun. One outlet sees something another doesn’t. At issue is what Thomas Dimitroff and the Falcons might, or might not, see. Speaking of which …
And now, as promised/threatened: As he readies for the combine, Dimitroff takes about cornerbacks, pass rushers and yes, mock drafts.

EW, I think it might be a few years until we have 1st round locks. But we’ll have prospects drafted pretty much every year. Whether they pan out or not is another story.

Either Thirty Points doesn’t have a job or should be fired from whatever job he does have. 25 of the 50+ posts isn’t much to be proud of.

If this is true about Jaybo, then he must be seeing something coming, like a real challenge from two other very fast mobile quarterbacks on the team. I wish Jaybo the best because he is a good kid with a lot of heart.

Luallen, of course. Maybe Washington this year, but Luallen is slated to be the starter in 2011.

Hey 30, You claim we have a high school offense. You sure you want to admit that a high school scored 45 and 24 points on your team. I’d be embarrassed if a high school scored on my college team. Oh wait. That proves that your argument and rantings are those of a MORON. You sound too much like Notre Dame fans, who I hate also. Any monkey can spout scores. The only thing you have said that was even close to a human thought was that Georgia ran all over our defense. Even my 2 year old son could see that. Yes, I’m insulting my son by comparing your intelligence to his!

Wow, two national championships before the Super Bowl was invented, those count. NOT!!!! If they had to drive horse and buggy to get there, you can’t count it. Nerds, stick to stabbing professors with swords and trying to date UGA women. You are the embarrassments.

This is the team where the Coach doesn’t have any talent and wins only by “coaching them up”? 3 first rounders……Chan the Man did his job as a recruiter, and could have won a bunch with this talented group….Cornfed Pugnacious Paul is a fine coach, but maybe not quite as good as a couple sportswriters think….three 1st rounders, just saying, wow…..

That full-blown idiot Washaun Ealey can’t SPELL this state.
If he’s still academically eligible come Fall 2010 it’ll be only by hijinks that would make Jan Kemp spin in her grave. I’m betting when he gets around to taking the Wonderlic he’ll make Jarius Wynn’s 12 and Knowshon’s 13 look like they cheated.

Hey 30-24, I was truly entertained by the first 100 or so of your posts, but you’re starting to go stale. I’m curious what your connection is to the University. If you did not matriculate there, then you might want to tone it down some before you misrepresent us graduates. Anyway this WAS a Ga. Tech thread, and no matter how much you enjoy the Dawgs’ “owning” of the state, the best of all worlds is that we beat a very good Tech team every year. It looks better on our resume’, “Dawg”.

I wish that all the “old fashioned hate” could just STOP at least until November, but guess what Jacket Fans, you guys are getting your JUST DESSERTS. Remember that Saint Simons, Yellow Fuzz, and GT 4 Life would post 45-43 on every UGA blog, every week, until Nov 29 2009 and then they vanished. I will give credit where credit is due, you guys had a GREAT season and should be proud. I hope that you have many more, and I will root for you, but in November I will be pulling for the DAWGS.

Hey 30, I was actually expanding the minds of Americas youth. I guess I was mistaken about you saying something about high school offense because that’s the argument most inbred mutt lovers use when talking about Tech. BTW the reason I didn’t respond so quickly was because I was using your arguments in my classroom. You would fail my class because you can’t expand on your opinion. This is something even my 8th graders have figured out. If you need some tutoring, I’m here for you. If not, keep ranting so I can use you in more classroom discussions.

GA Tech, 4 NCs claimed, 1917, 1928, 1952, 1990. First 3 titles back-dated, 1990 legit if UPI can be considered legit. Real total, 1 title. “I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck from Georgia Tech and a helluva embellisher…”
