Sporting News sees a Round 1 Tech windfall in its mock draft

Are two of these three Tech juniors first-rounders? (AJC photo by Vino Wong)

Jonathan Dwyer, Morgan Burnett and Derrick Morgan announce they're leaving Georgia Tech. Will two of them wind up being NFL first-rounders? (AJC photo by Vino Wong)

It’s just a mock draft, OK? It might not pan out. Still, if you’re a proud Georgia Tech fan, this is one to clip and save. (Or, seeing as how Sporting News Today is an online-only publication, to print, clip and save.)

Here’s the Sporting News Today pre-combine mock draft: The No. 2 overall pick (going to Detroit)  is Derrick Morgan, the defensive end from Tech; the No. 12 overall pick (going to Miami) is Demaryius Thomas, the wide receiver from Tech. And now you’re asking: How long since we saw a local school produce two players in the draft’s top dozen?

Answer: Ten months. Matthew Stafford went No. 1 overall last April to Detroit, and Knowshon Moreno went 12th to Denver.

But wait!  Sporting News also has Tech’s Jonathan Dwyer going to San Diego with the 28th pick in Round 1. (As you might have heard, the Chargers cut LaDainian Tomlinson.) So: How long since a local team had three first-rounders in one draft?

Since never.

Seeing Morgan slotted as No. 2 overall is a bit of a surprise, but only a bit: He has been projected at/near the top five since December. Seeing Thomas at No. 12 a week after he broke a bone in his foot during training in Arizona is a shock. But his whole rocket-up-the-draft-board trajectory has been remarkable. Nobody considered him a first-rounder in January.

Oh, and you’re asking: What of the Falcons? You won’t be shocked to hear that Sporting News has them taking a cornerback, though not Kareem Jackson of Alabama (the projected pick in Todd McShay’s latest mock draft on ESPN.com) and not Kyle Wilson of Boise State (the choice of ESPN’s Mel Kiper and SI.com’s Don Banks). SN goes with Patrick Robinson of Florida State.

Scouts Inc. rates Robinson the sixth-best corner and the 45th-best player in the draft. (Link requires registration.) Taking him with the 19th (or 20th) pick might seem a reach. But that’s why mocks are such fun. One outlet sees something another doesn’t. At issue is what Thomas Dimitroff and the Falcons might, or might not, see. Speaking of which …

And now, as promised/threatened: As he readies for the combine, Dimitroff takes about cornerbacks, pass rushers and yes, mock drafts.

Mark,

What are the odds that the Falcons trade down lower in the first round/early second round to acquire more draft picks?

Falcons drafting of cornerbacks in round one over the years has been blundered repeatedly except for Deion Sanders and maybe Bobby Butler. I still have nightmares about the wasted Bruce Pickens and Michael Booker picks.

Supposedly, J.Shaw is considering a transfer to Georgia Southern.

I seriously doubt they would, Diamond Dog. I think Dimitroff sees an opportunity to get what he wants where he is.

Mark,

I agree. I think they’ll go defense first with that first round pick. Especially with Coach Smith, who has a defensive background.

But what if Dimitroff followed Bill Polian’s lead with the Colts and load up on offensive talent? Harrison, E. James, R. Wayne, Donald Brown, etc.

Thoughts?

Yeah, like UGA has produced a bevy of first round picks. Outside of Stafford and Moreno, who else has UGA had drafted in the first round in the past ten years?

Edit: Forgot to include Captain Twitter, D. Pollack. He hit the nail on the head with his Kirby Smart was coming to Georgia prognostication.

3 in 10 years?

Wow. yeah, you really run the state of Georgia. Now if you can focus on beating Tennessee and Kentucky next year.

Georgia Tech Police have issued a warning for the entire Campus and surrounding area, for a man running with a football uncontrollably!!!! They report that NOBODY on campus has capabilities of stopping him. It is unsure at the moment if the man with the football is Caleb King or Washaun Ealy. They are hoping he turns south, and perhaps somebody on Georgia State’s campus has the ability to stop the man with the football.

Stay tuned for updates!!!!

Diamond Dog, I actually think UGA has had several this decade. I think Charles Grant, Richard Samuel, Champ Bailey, Marcus Stroud, etc. were 1st round picks, although may be not all this decade.

I am not certain what it means to have 1st round picks other than it directly refutes many UGA fans’ position that if you play at Tech – even in our high school offense – you can’t get drafted.

UPDATE!!!!

The man running lawlessly with the football has run back into Bobby Dudd “Stadium”, and decidd to walk from the 20 yard line, to the endzone opposite the “Stadium”. Police describe the event as being amazingly similar to an event on Nov 28, 2009.

It is still unclea to the GT Police if the man running with the football is Caleb King or Washaun Ealy.

Stay tuned for updates on the man running with the football!!!
