Which team is having the better season – UGA or Tech?

Thompkins battles Lawal. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)

This will sound a little weird, but it’s a Bradley post so whaddaya expect? I’m asking a question, the nub of which is: Can a team with an 11-12 record really be having a better season than one that’s 17-8?

Wait, wait. Hear me out. The 11-12 team is Georgia; the 17-8 team is Tech. And to offer a real answer, don’t we have to consider more than just won-lost records? Don’t we have to consider …

Expectations: Georgia was picked to finish last in the six-team SEC East and is indeed in last place at 3-7; Tech was picked to finish fourth in the 12-team ACC and, at 5-6,  stands eighth.

Polls: Georgia has been unranked all season; Tech was ranked 22nd in the Associated Press preseason poll and 20th in the coaches’ poll but dropped out of both Monday.

Personnel: Georgia starts a former walk-on (Ricky McPhee); Tech starts three McDonald’s All-Americans (Gani Lawal, Iman Shumpert, Derrick Favors).

Player development: Georgia guard Travis Leslie averaged 6.3 points a freshman but is averaging 14.5 in his first year under Fox and is projected by NBAdraft.net as the 23rd player on its 2011 mock; Tech forward Favors was rated the nation’s No. 1 recruit by Scout.com last season but is averaging 9.7 points in ACC play and has slipped from being the second player listed on NBAdraft.net’s 2010 mock to the seventh.

Personnel utilization: Georgia’s two best players, Leslie and forward Trey Thompkins, average 10.7 and 13. 2 shots per game, respectively; Tech’s two best players, Favors and Lawal, average 7.5 and 9.2 shots, respectively.

Depth: Georgia’s seventh man, center Chris Barnes, averages 2.8 points; Tech’s eighth man, guard Glen Rice Jr., averages 4.5 points.

Stability: Mark Fox is in his first season at Georgia; Paul Hewitt is in his 10th at Tech.

Head-to-head: Georgia beat Tech 73-66 in Athens on Jan. 5.

Signature wins: Georgia has beaten three teams (Tech, Tennessee and Vanderbilt) that were ranked when the game was played; Tech has beaten three (Duke, North Carolina and Clemson).

Bad losses: Georgia lost to Wofford at home, lost by 28 points at Missouri and was routed at Florida and Auburn; only Tech’s loss at Duke has come by more than 10 points.

Who's having the better season?

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...

Road records: Georgia is 0-8; Tech is 3-6.

RPI: Georgia is 90th; Tech is 29th.

Strength of schedule: Georgia’s is rated the 11th-toughest nationally; Tech’s is 12th.

Probable final regular-season record: Assuming Georgia beats Florida in Athens and LSU in Baton Rouge, it should finish 14-15; assuming Tech wins its three remaining home games, it should finish 20-10.

Probable destination: Georgia will do well to make the NIT; Tech would have to mess up not to reach the NCAA.

Conclusion: Tech has better players and still figures to go further but hasn’t really done much yet; Georgia entered just hoping not to be embarrassed but has beaten four teams (Illinois is the fourth) that stand to make the NCAA field. And Georgia did beat Tech. All things considered, the Bulldogs have had, at least to date, the better season.

I was skeptical at the time of Fox’s hire. Now, I would not trade him for Hewitt. In a couple of years, UGA will have Tech lapped.

Listen, I understand that Tech will most likely make the NCAA Tournament, but understand how far the Dawgs have come this year. Especially since several games in the last 2 months have been close. A little more confidence in the last 2 minutes of each half, and this team can beat just about anyone. I wouldn’t be surprised to see us upset Kentucky at home either.

As a Dawgs fan, I will still have to admit that Tech is definitely the better team, all the way around. We aren’t in their league – yet. Depending on who stays on each team, we still may not catch up next year.

But I like the angle here, Mark, because the key criterion you seem to be promoting is “to what degree has each team met or exceeded expectations?” And at least by that sole criterion, it ain’t even close – Georgia has far surpassed what anybody expected, while Tech has been underwhelming while good.

Something tells me that Mark Fox would do better with Paul Hewitt’s lineup than Hewitt would do with Fox’s.

Besides, Tech is underachieving in a mediocre ACC. The SEC is pretty similar in terms of overall ability and Georgia is overachieving. They’re in last in the standings, but they’re so far ahead of where they should be.

I saw UGA’s opener with New Orleans. I remember telling someone that I didn’t think Georgia would win more than eight or so games and perhaps only one in the conference. Tech has not improved during the year; Georgia has.

Granted, he had a lot – and I mean a lot – further to go, I would say that Jeremy Price has improved more than Derick Favors. To be so touted, Favors has looked lost at times on the floor.

Although they brag about how much a Tech diploma is worth, it can be said with certainty that attending GTU has cost Derrick Favors. Thus, a new slogan is born: Go to Georgia Tech! It’s worth millions!

Mark: I agree UGA has had the better season. Your analysis is a good one.
The only statement that I disagree with is ” GT will have to really mess up not to go to the NCAA”
They are in eighth place in the ACC which will probably get only six teams in the NCAA
GT is not exactly on a roll to win its remaining three home games. My opinion is
they will be extremely lucky to win 20 games including whatever they might win in the ACC Tournament. I hate to be so pessimistic but I believe that, right now, there
are six teams better than GT in the ACC.

Mark, you should ask Hewitt this question so you can get a 30 minute lecture about how great Dayton is. And then he will tell you that Indiana (Pa), the team that took Tech to overtime, is one of the best D2 schools in the country. I don’t think that you could get him to take any responsibility for this mess.

I’m a huge Dog fan, but your premise is not fair. As you said recently in a post about the Hawks, when your team gets better, the expectations are higher, and every little flaw gets magnified. Its relatitively easier for the Dogs to exceed expectations. Anything good from them is a pleasant surprise, and anything good from Tech is just expected because of their talent. However I do agree Legend of Len Barker that Fox would fare better if he and Hewett switched teams to coach.

Tech is continuing to under achieve. UGA has some nice upsets and is hanging around .500, which is pretty good, considering the new coach and the limited roster Felton left.

Hold on, time-out.

This year UGA is 11-12, Tech is 17-8.
Why is there a question here?

If you all (Bradley and your media buddies) picked wrong, don’t blame it on Tech. From 2-14 in the ACC to the sweet 16 in one year, really? That would be more along the lines of miraculous instead of expected.

Georgia is having a much better year. You only need to talk to a few fans of each school to see it. Georgia fans are getting interested in basketball again, reveling in each win, while we Tech fans are suffering through the losses and are just relieved by the wins (except the Duke and UNC-CH ones).

Tech is failing (again) to live up to its potential; Georgia is exceeding its potentional.

In spite of losing the head-to-head, Tech fans had a much better year than Georgia fans in football: all season: except for the three losses, we were having a great time. We knew our program was on the way up, while Georgia fans were calling for coaching changes.

In basketball the opposite is true.

I think the better question to ask is… which fan base should be more optimistic about the future. Georgia has won a few games they had no business winning, but all in all this has not been a very good season. Just because expectations were so low, I don’t think anyone can say they are having a better season than Tech.

We will see if Fox can bring in more depth and then what he can do with a full roster of scholarship athletes. Again, I am optimistic of the future, but am also reminded that Felton pulled off some big upsets in his first couple of seasons with a thin roster…. the biggest problem for Felton though he kept kicking half his roster off the team…

This is a no brainer and an example of the difference in recruiting (or in Fox’s case, inheriting) good players and teaching them to be better players versus recruiting great high school players and not being able to (or assuming it is not necessary because of their high school skills) teach them to become great college players.

Travis Leslie and Jeremy Price can be no better examples of this. Two good high school players who were two “okay” college players last year who have turned into very good college basketball players this year.

I think including McPhee in this dicussion is wrong. He is a very good three point shooter who is woefully inedpt in handling the ball and is pretty much the same player he was last year. Because of his lack of size and quickness, he has a hard time shaking the defense in order to set up from threes.

Here is the problem with UGA and Mark Fox – if Fox continues to move UGA forward next year, then soon bigger basketball programs that need a coach will come calling. If you think Mark Fox is settled in at UGA for the forseeable future, you are wrong. Because of the culture and nature of basketball at UGA, the school remains only a stepping stone for coaches to big time college basketball. Remember, even Tubby Smith could not generate enough excitement at UGA to consistently sell out the small gym.

I also like Mark Richt and wish him and the football team great success in the future. But if he doesn’t and a change is made we should have total confidence that Damon Evans will hire UGA another quality coach. This isn’t football where we can find a multitude of reasons why the team of our choice, or the conference of choice, is or isn’t living up to expectations. Basketball is a honestly brutal or pleasant reality. That being said, UGA is by far exceding expectations. Not because of a win here or there at home, nor playing a team hard on the road. That does factor in, but with the play of the Dawgs this season over last, even though GT has found itself ranked this season, I give the nod to UGA over GT. Coaching change at Georgia helped a great deal. Shoot, Fox even got Evans to pony up the bucks slap for a new coat of paint on the Steg. The lipstick on a pig thing…Just kidding, Dawgs.

Calipari, Stallings and Fox are my top 3 for SEC Coach of the Year. Stallings and Calipari are in the lead pack but come seasons end, we’ll know. Calipari is tainted goods but wins. He reminds me of a coach I had in high school football that once told me in a non-serious, joking manner, that cheating sure beat losing…I wondered if he knew Junior Johnson.

This is the wrong question to ask. Tech has had the “better season”. Better record, higher RPI, and a strength of schedule one spot below Georgia’s. Tech has three McDonald’s All Americans and Georgia is struggling with their personnel. Paul Hewitt is on the way to finishing 10 seasons at Tech. Fox is just getting started in Athens. Each team seems to be meeting predicted expectations. The difference is that Georgia in many cases has exceeded expectations. Four quality wins, wins over three ranked opponents, and building respect in the league.

Georgia is the team that you do not want to face, especially if you are on the bubble. They can play with anyone at anytime…just not consistently. Tech is the same way, but you expect consistency from their group.

Georgia has not had the better season on paper. However, Georgia and Its fans seem to have more to look forward to in the near future than does Tech. Just an opinion.

From what I have observed, Fox is getting more out of less, and Hewitt is getting less out of more! I understood that Favors was to be a “one and done”, but appears to me he needs a lot more work before he takes the next step. Have only seen both teams on TV, and while Tech appears to be very talented, I have never seen a Team implode in the latter stages as they do. They appear to be just like the UGA football team, under achieving at its finest. And this looked to be a year when the ACC was there for the taking, with no clear favorite as UNC was last year. And yes, Uga lets a lot of late leads get away also, but at times they appear to be as good as any one they play. Just do not have the best talent or depth, but Tompkins and Leslie could play for anyone. Imagine Duke with those two coming off the bench for Zoubek and Thomas! I just hope that Fox can get some of the better talent in Georgia to Athens, then hope he stays ! JMHO

The bottom feeder of the SEC is having a better season than a team about to receive an at-large bid. UGA has inferior coaching and personnel to almost every team in the east. You have Donovan with 2 titles, Calipari with his great success at multiple schools, not to mention the fact he’s the best recruiter out there. And Pearl who hasn’t missed a big dance at UT. Who has the better X and O coach? I believe Georgia. Who has the better recruiter? I believe Tech. But if the lousy excuse for fans of UGA will get off their collective butts and support Fox, I believe he can build something special at Georgia.

Presently UGA basketball does not matter to anyone but the UGA athletic administration and staff. If the UGA grads will get out and support the team, then UGA basketball will matter on the national scene, and they will sign those top 100 recruits needed to build a program. Georgia fans need to realize that the best point guard in the country is not going to sign with a college and play in front of a high school crowd. Georgia has the coach to be successful, now they need the fans

Fox has done more with less, although he does have some good size in the front court. Poor guard play has killed them…..turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

Hewitt has done less with more. He has a wealth of talent on a team that can easily go 8 deep and maintain quality play. Either Hewitt is the Willie Martinez of CBB, or he has real chemistry problems on the team…..and I’m talking about class and labs.

Fox and Georgia will eventually surpass GIT in every way in basketball…..just like in football.

Both schools have great baseball programs.

The answer to the question is Tech. They’re on the bubble of the NCAA’s, and UGA is fighting for NIT eligibility, hence, Tech’s having a better season. Having said that, it’s also obvious that the UGA fans are much happier with their season than are Tech fans, for all the reasons stated above, most notably, the coaching.

But when MB states that “Tech would have to mess up not to reach the NCAA”, he’s a little off. While Tech’s defense will keep them in games, their lack of offense, especially at the point, may just make them NIT bound. I love watching them play D, but it hurts to watch them in a half court offense (dribble…dribble…Shumpert behind the back dribble…dribble…turnover).

As someone else said, Tech is 8th in a weak ACC that won’t send more then 6 teams (if that) this year. I see them winning two more regular season games (UNC & BC), and losing three (Va. Tech, Clemson, Maryland), which would put them at 7-9 in the ACC and 19-11 overall. And I don’t think this will get them to the big dance. Yeah, if the season ended today, they might get in on RPI alone, but a more deserving team would be getting the shaft. And a small part of me wants them to go ahead and lose out just to expedite a coaching change.

Not even close, Tech has had the better season, even though they lost to Uga and are currently not ranked for the first time all season. Uga doesn’t even have a winning record! They do however seem like they have found a good coach that will make UGA relevant again in bball. Even though Tech hasn’t met expectations this season, they play in a much tougher conference than uga and still have quality wins, higher, RPI, etc. I mean, if tech was in the SEC they would be in the top ten and everyone would be talking about what a great season they are having. But even being a Tech fan, we have greatly underachieved so far this season with the talent we have on our roster. And I would like to give credit to Mark Fox, he has done a better job than Hewitt with much less.

This is a pretty pointless topic…but here are my thoughts anyways. We won’t know what kind of hire Fox was until a few years. So far they have done what they always do…beat Tech at home and pull a few upsets and still finish last, or near last. At Tech, we loved Hewitt when he was hired. He took underacheiving Cremins players to the NCAA’s. We thought he was the next John Wooden. 10 years later….Look at him now!

“Presently UGA basketball does not matter to anyone but the UGA athletic administration and staff.”

Not true, not true, not true. Georgia fans are excited by the development of the basketball program and paying attention. I’m sure the attendance records would show that and support of the program has been growing all season. Look at all the coverage the program is getting, people are reading it. This is the first year with our amazing coach and it takes a little time for the word to get out. I’m sick and tired of hearing people bash Georgia fans for lack of basketball support. This is the first season we’ve had any basketball worth watching in a long time and the culture is changing, and actually, much more quickly that I ever expected it could.

I have to say that I was unaware of CMF before he came to UGA. Wow, this guy has a team playing very well that lacks so much depth. It will be interested if 1) he sticks around and 2) what players he can recruit. Both teams will be better next year

So Mark Bradley writes the article and says to himself, “What conclusion will cause the most controversy?” It is IMPOSSIBLE for a sub-500, lucky if they get into the NIT team to be having a better season than a team well above 500 who will almost definitely make the NCAA tournament. Who’s having a more disappointing season? Georgia Tech, absolutely. But that’s because expectations are so high and people actually care about Georgia Tech basketball. Congrats to UGA for having a good season under first year coach Mark Fox. The future looks good for them, they’ve had an encouraging season. But NOT a better season that GT.

Also, I believe this exact same article was written recently about UGA v. GT football, when GT was under a first year coach who was showing promise. Great originality Bradley.

I’m a huge GT fan, but have to say that UGA has had the better season so far. UGA has overachieved, is better coached and plays as a team. GT is a talent-ladened group (notice I didn’t say team)that has mostly under-achieved. I blame much of that on Hewitt.

Chris

Mark I could not agree more. Georgia basketball has pretty much been irrelevant. Expectations were so low that I did not plan on watching one Georgia basketball game this season. However, what Fox has done with very little talent is amazing. What you didn’t mention is that Georgia took Kentucky to the wire IN LEXINGTON and even Calapari could not believe how tough Georgia was on that night.
I just hope Fox is in Athens long enough for basketball to be respectable again. If he keeps this up, the bigger basketball jobs will come calling and just like Tubby, he’ll be gone.

Last year at this time, the big story was “which bad team would Mr. Favors favor–Tech or the Dawgs?” He made the sensible choice, not knowing who the coach was going to be in Athens. Now a thought question: where do you think UGA would be with Favors together with Leslie and Thompkins in Mark Fox’s triangle offense? My estimate: they would be in second place in the SEC East pointing toward an NCAA bid. It is not that I think Favors is superman (his play so far has shown that to be true) It is just that he would be a very nice piece for the system that is setting up in Athens.
But enough about silly thought questions (which would make at least as interesting a blog topic as the subject of this one). I am not fond of so-called “one and done” players–even if having two guys like Favors and John Wall, along with this coach and the existing roster, would transform Uga into a top five team. I’d be happy with recruiting another power forward and sweet shooting guard or swingman for next year (remember that we have a pretty good transfer guard riding the pines this season) and let’s see what transpires. The nice thing about basketball is that if you can get the right personnel, it takes only a year or two to become highly competitive.

In terms of overall health of the program…id still give the nod to tech. Even though we cant dominate a down ACC. We will always attract top flight talent, and have a proven track record of sending talent to the NBA. With this being said…UGA has shown a great deal of promise. But they are 3-7 in one of the worst basketball conferences…along with being 0-8 on the road. Tech’s regular season has been disappointing…but as long as tech makes it to the dance…they are having a better year than UGA.

Just in case anyone’s still reading this far down the line:
I don’t know why anyone would seriously follow basketball at either the college or pro level at this point. Any potentially good college player inevitably jumps to the NBA before they’re ready, thus resulting in an inferor product at both levels. The NBA wants us to pay big bucks to watch players that should still be in college. Colleges want us to make big donations to watch neophyte players that should be spending more time learning the game and developing team chemistry. Watch out, college football fans because this scenario is heading our way, too.

The difference with Basketball

February 16th, 2010
1:19 pm

…………and football is that the barrier to entry as being an elite team in basketball is far different than it is in football. Basketball requires a good coach and capital committments in the tens of millions. Football requires good coaching and financial committements in the hundreds of millions. Just like everything is in college athletics…..the folks that can stroke the biggest checks (or are willing to) usually succeed the most. It’s a sad state of affairs, but it’s the truth. Tech and Georgia should both be FAR better basketball programs than have have historically. There is really good basketball talent in this state…….maybe not to the level of the football talent……..but enough that Tech & UGA should be able to fair far better than they have. When Tech AND UGA fans demand excellence…….they’ll get excellence.

Georgia can keep Fox………..if they pay him and make a committment to winning.

Tech get rid of Hewitt and get a Super Star coach……if they pay him and make a committment to winning.

Basketball is just the opposite of football this season. In basketball Tech has the better team, but Georgia is having the better season, given what they have to work with. Georgia’s season looks like it could be the turning point for the program. Georgia isn’t a very good team, but the players work hard and it looks like Fox is getting everything possible from the players he has. A few more strong recruits and Georgia could become a factor in the seasons to come. Tech’s season can only be considered a disappointment at this point. Unless they come alive in the ACC & NCAA Tournament, this season could be a turning point in the wrong direction. As a result, the advantage goes to UGA.

Being honest, I have to give the advantage in football this season to Tech, even though UGA won the head-to-head match-up. Like the Tech basketball team, the UGA football team had higher expectations that it didn’t meet. On the other hand, Tech’s football team accomplished most of it’s goals for the season. Their goals may not have been as challenging as UGA’s goals, but for the most part, they got it done. The UGA basketball team’s goals may not have been as exciting as Tech’s, but even if the Dawgs don’t win another game, they have exceeded expectations.

On the plus side, UGA can take it’s disappointing football team and beat Tech’s highly successful football team, and UGA can take it’s collection of misfits and walk-ons that they call a basketball team and beat Tech’s highly favored basketball team full of of All-Americans and top recruits.

Nonsense. I’m a Dawg fan, but Tech is clearly having the better season. UGA is doing a better job of meeting/exceeding expectations than Tech, but Tech’s bar was set much higher than UGA’s. Simply doing better than expected is not the same as truly having a better year. Tech is clearly ahead in that department. Tech will likely make the NCAA tournament, and would certainly be in the NIT if they don’t. UGA isn’t going to sniff either one unless they repeat the SEC tourney miracle of a couple of years ago. Therefore, Tech is having a better year. Period, end of story.

It was nice to beat them though. :)

Coach Fox has rekindled interest in Georgia Basketball. That in itself is remarkable. I was lucky enough to have attended the game vs. Tennessee, which was also the first sellout of Stegeman for a basketball game since 2007. The place was on fire. The fans were as vocal is in 1990 when we won the SEC vs. Shaq and LSU. Its good to see this new interest, and Coach Fox is getting the attention of some great recruits out there. Some suggestions for CPH (I’ve got a lot more!):
1. Make Favors come off the bench. If he pouts, tough. He’s not doing anything near what was expected anyway. It might motivate him to start scoring more than 4 pts.a game (see Wake) and not look so aloof/bored on the court (see every game).
2. Reduce playing time for anyone who shoots less than 70% of their free throws. Anyone who shoots an air ball on a free throw gets benched immediately.
3. Require minimum three passes before shooting in half-court offense. (Watch how top 5 teams move the ball.)
4. Instead of lashing out and destroying the confidence of Shumpert/Udofia, work with them. They both look like scared rabbits on the court.
5. You work hard on defense. If you’re incapable of creating an offense, at least get some motion going. You have 10 players; you can sub out if someone gets tired.
6. Ditch that God-awful press. It’s given up way more easy baskets than created turnovers.
7. Locate some rec league coaches and ask them to give you some inbounds plays.

Work on these, Coach, for starters. A lot more to come before tournament time. No pressure.

Records notwithstanding, Mark Fox and UGA are having the much better season because they are actually building something that will continue to strengthen the mutts’ program over the coming years. For Tech and Hewitt, this is just a repeat of the last five seasons, with better talent certainly, but with no promise of continuity or consistency in progress. With the almost certainty that Hewitt will be gone after the season is over, and with rumored NCAA violations on the horizon, things are not rosy for Tech in the immediate future. That said, if Hewitt does indeed get the boot, there will at least be some much-needed enthusiasm about next year, regardless of the prospect of rebuilding with less talent. After a year or two, Tech should regain its dominant position in Georgia state hoops.

Of course, UGA fans are delusional if they think that Mark Fox will stay in Athens if he does fulfill his early promise. If Mark Fox is still at UGA in three years, it will be because the Dogs are pretty good but not great. The HC basketball job at UGA is the equivalent of the HC football job at Kentucky. An average job opportunity in a great conference but the wrong sport.

Mark, I really hope you are wrong about Hewitt not getting fired if the Jackets make the NCAA Tourney. I think the level of disgust with Hewitt among the Tech faithful is too high for even the GTAA to ignore. It’s been bad on the blogs for a couple of years, but I mean at games, in alumni meetings, on campus, and among administration….I have heard too many negative comments and financially-driven criticism of Hewitt. A Sweet Sixteen finish might do it, but just making the field with a potential Final-Four team would not be enough, I think. Especially if they perform as usual in the first round.

I agree the Jackets may well back into the tourney, but do you really think making the field with a first or second round exit would save Hewitt’s job, Mark?

UGA is having the Perfect Season over Georgia tek in Football, Men’s Basketball and Football.

That says it all, except that UGA is far better in Academic Progress Rate APR than Georgia tek in all 3 sports we have beat Georgia tek in already.

Now we turn our sights on Baseball where UGA owns a 6-1 record over Georgia tek in Baseball Games at Turner Field, a 195-148-2 All-Time UGA Advantage in Baseball over Georgia tek and in Strength of Schedule UGA faces # 8 and Georgia tek # 35.

Do they let a team limited to only 11 scholarships in men’s basketball by The NCAA Probation of Georgia tek for your 914 APR to play in a post-season tournament ?

How horrible is that, not to mention Paul Hewitt has a LOSING RECORD by several games to UGA.

This is the problem with Hewitt, hes just good enough of a coach and recruiter to keep his job and bad enough to make us all suffer. At some point you just got to accept that the team is going nowhere and start over, good or bad.

Travis Leslie is now projected as the #12 pick(updated from #23) in the first round of the 2011 NBA draft at nbadraft.net. Trey Thompkins is projected at #19 in the first round. If that’s anywhere close to being accurate, Georgia is going to have a very talented and experienced(all Jr’s and Sr’s) starting lineup next year with Ware, Gerald Robinson, Leslie, Thompkins and Jeremy Price. Next year is the key year for Fox.

I’m worried UGA won’t snag one or two big recruits this year, which would be essential in improving to NCAA tourney quality next year. They seem so well coached when I watch them move the ball to get shots, it would only take one or two solid recruits to move the ship well ahead.

Oh, and really, letdown or not, GTech is clearly having a better season. However, it is very easy to argue that Mark Fox is having a better season than Paul Hewitt. I would think UGA, if Fox can convince a couple strong recruits to come to Athens next year, will rise quickly and remain an NCAA tourney contender every year Fox is on our sidelines. The fans need to fill the stands up and show recruits that their interest in UGA is worthwhile. They don’t get paid, so they are going to go to the program that brings them more attention and excitement.

Last night’s B-Ball game vs. UNC spoke VOLUMES about this GT team.

Just calling it like I saw it (in person).

Shumpert & Lawal hardly played in the first half…and GT played very well: 41-21 at half.

When Shumpert & Lawal got MOST of their playing time in second half,
GT didnt play so well. LOTS of turnovers.

Of ALL the yelling CPH did all night, the OVERHWELMING MAJORITY
of the yelling was directed to just two players: Shumpert & Lawal.

There was a BIG change in team performance between first half and second half.

Mid-way second half, CPH calls a TO. CPH walks ALL THE WAY out almost to the top of the key, yelling at his team in frustration.

Then, just one minute later he has to call another TO.

He spent the ENTIRE second TO grilling only one player: Shumpert.

Hey, just telling you what I saw.

Next year could easily be the tournament for Fox’s squad. Leslie and Thompkins will only improve. Price has shown tremendous improvement(although he still has a ways to go.) Chris Barnes looked good against Bama. We have already signed a top 150 guy out of southern Florida. Connor Notle was a big recruit in high school and he will be eligible after sitting out a transfer year. Hopefully we can get some good guard play and get our bench to play a bigger role.

With Kentucky having 3 guys go to the NBA, UT losing Chism, and USC losing Downey, we should be able to compete for the second or third spot in the East and make a tourney run.

georgia got a steal when mark fox came to UGA.. i have went to 2 UGA basketball games and i have watched CMF’s mannerisms. what stands out is that he lays everything on the line. and his players feed off of that. CMF will get in the face of an official and he will even bump an official (check the youtube video of him doing that). that gets his players fired up.

travis leslie is one of the most improved players in the country due to his hard work. but it seems to me that CMF has lit a fire under his ass to make him improve. thats my kind of coach.

as for UGAs record….. we were up by 11 at kentucky in the 2nd half and we lost. i can think of 6 other games that shouldve been wins. miss st. vandy, s carolina, at tenn, ark and ole miss… if we had 4 of those wins we would be in the ncaa as well
