Rodney Garner and Mark Richt meet the press on Signing Day 2010. (Photo by M. Bradley)
Athens – Just as it would be wrong to make too much of one lost recruit or one tepid signing class, it would likewise be wrong to ignore current events. And those are: Coming off its worst season on the field under Mark Richt, the Bulldogs have assembled their lowest-ranked recruiting class, according to Rivals.com, since Richt was so new to the job he hadn’t yet coached a game.
“I don’t expect Bulldog fans to be excited over an 8-5 season,” Richt said Wednesday, briefing the media on a subdued-by-Georgia-standards Signing Day, but that season is done and this recruiting class is essentially complete and the Bulldogs move on. And the question becomes: Is Georgia better suited today to win big than it was 12 months ago?
And the answer is: Yes.
We cannot know how good Da’Rick Rogers will (or will not) be at Tennessee, but we can know this: Georgia was never going to play for another SEC title with Willie Martinez coaching its defense. If firing Martinez and two assistants made for what recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner called “some difficulties,” that’s a trade-off worth making if in fact Todd Grantham, Martinez’s successor, is as clever as advertised.
“That’s why I did what I did,” said Richt, responding to a question about Georgia’s positioning for the future. “That’s the only reason I did what I did.”
As much as Signing Day matters, coaching matters more. Richt’s program had become the place where big-time defensive players came and were left to their own devices. Were recruiting alone the secret to success, Georgia and Richt — eight consecutive Top 10 classes, according to Rivals — would have taken a BCS title by now.
As disappointing as Rogers’ defection was, Georgia fans should nonetheless find reason to believe this February. Because the head coach bears a lean and hungry look. “[Last season] has given me more resolve to get this program where it belongs,” Richt said. And then: “We have everything we need to get that done.”
Last season wasn’t good. (No good seasons lead to Shreveport.) The coaching search took six weeks and included three high-profile turndowns. The recruiting class of 2010 numbered 18 commitments last fall and wound up with 19 signed letters-of-intent. But all that is past now, and what remains is a better defensive staff — couldn’t be worse, could it? — and a rejuvenated Richt. And also this:
“We’ve got some darn good football players,” Richt said. “That’s got me excited about what the future holds.”

If anyone really cares about recruiting rankings, ESPN ranks UGA’s class 9th in the nation, though 5th in the SEC. This ranking is after the two losses this morning and the pickup (Thornton). Just saying …

IMHO, this tepid class is somewhat mitigated by the relatively small number of signees this season. Perhaps a better approach would be to determine the average star ranking (for whatever that’s worth) and compare that against a team’s most pressing needs.

Ten starters back on offense with two splendid, highly ranked QBs competing for the 11th spot. Four previous top ten recruiting classes and Boatloads of highly rated redshirt freshmen. The schedule is easier, UT has an unproven coach and UF has a nut job for a head coach.
No excuses – no exceptions. 2010 should be a top ten, nationally competitive BCS team.

Although I think recruiting rankings are overrated (specialty players tend to get more stars than the big boys who win games), I think it is worth noting that for all those years we had top 10 recruiting, we had other SEC schools that were higher. It seemed like no matter how good things got for us, they were always better for UF, LSU, and, more recently, Bama. Anyway, I don’t think losing one WR will break this class.

I think MR found some “fire” in his belly. Football is a game goverened by emotion and attitude. There is nothing wrong with being “nice”, it just not have a place on a football field. I cannot remember a time in the recent past when I had more desire to see spring practice start right now!

I like the looks of our class. Keeping
Da’Rick would’ve been nice, but if he’d
do this then he probably needs to be
where he is. We’ve got only 19 signees,
and the quality per man is high. Da’Rick
and his QB friend and their Dad can play
football in the yard in the offseason
while they’re sitting at home (the new
Tennessee tradition during bowl season),
and watch our bowl game on TV, along
with Alabama’s, Florida’s, LSU’s, and
Auburn’s. I like how we recruited on the
defensive side of the ball. Go Dawgs !

Historically the offense under Richt/Bobo has been far worse then the defense. I do believe the defense will be better and the offense will flounder and look totally clueless as usual. The good news is that we cut 1/2 of the cancer out that plagues the program. Now if we can just get rid of the big over tanned tumor at the the top we can start to improve.

Why do we continue to harp on one recruit….he’s gone, move on. We are not lacking in playmakers on offense, defense is where the weakness has been. It looks to be solid class on defense. It’s funny looking at the headlines on ajc for GA and the trade school. Tech gets “the guys they need,” however UGA is in trouble with the 16th ranked recruiting class. Is is it bias??? Thats not for me to judge. Good luck to all the youngmen and Go Dawgs!

Agree—we are experiencing a let down in star rating for recruiting , in most part, for the results on the field this yr. We gave opposing teams plenty of ammunition to tell-twist to the recruits. But have a lot of positives…Richt let go of 3 defensive-special teams coaches who were not getting results on the field. If we lost some players because of the coaching changes–that is ok… UGA is a million times better off with Todd Grantham as DC….It has also been shown in the past that star ratings are sometimes accurate and sometimes not accurate….Nick Saban coached up a 3 star rating class in his first yr at Bama to a pretty good record and even better record in 2nd & 3 yrs. UGA got some very good football players today who want to be at UGA and all seem to be good kids who want to get better….so that fits in very nicely for UGA and future of the program. Look for UGA to add another very good defensive coach in the future. Future is bright for UGA

We also need to realize that UGA only signed 18 players. If they would have signed the 25-26 that most other schools signed then they would be in the top 5. To be where they are ranked with that small of a class says something about the job Richt and Garner did this year.

Richt’s got all this figured out. He’s way ahead of everyone. After signing all these top 10 classes and getting blown out almost every year by Florida, Tennessee, etc., he’s decided that recruiting lower ranked players will give him an edge in the big games, since everyone will be overconfident when they play UGA!!!! Man, can I bust a move or what? Also, I working on a plan to black-out all home games this year. We will be in solid black from head to toe and even have a black G on our helmets. We will also black out our teeth which I think will really scare our opponents. Plus the best part is…..we have all home games at night and play with the stadium lights turned off when the opponent has the ball!!! Am I a genius or what????? Woof Woof

GA should be better on both offense and defense. The O showed in the second half of the season that they could indeed run the ball. This should be a staple for the dawgs come september. It will take a few games for the new QB to get adjusted. The D will improve all year long. Look for the dawgs to start slow and finish strong. The talent is in place and coaching should be improved.
A lot of folks will disagree, but Bobo is a good OC and will only improve. The O is returning a lot of experience and the QB play will improve as the year goes on.

One thing to point out about this class is that there is no premier quarterbacks, runningbacks, or wide receivers, which are the high profile type of players. This class is heavy on both lines, which tend to be underhyped. With two redshirt quarterbacks, two young runningbacks, and a handful of past big WR recruits, this class makes a lot of sense in that it doesn’t have the glitz from classes past. Yes, losing a couple of high profile guys late is bad, but overall this is a junkyard dog class that compliments the players we have really well!!

Overall a very good class for the Dawgs, i think we got players that are passionate about playing for UGA. Just watched the interview with Christian Green and i’m kind of glad he chose FSU the kid just butchered the english language. Its hard to root for people who you cant even understand. And its not just him it is a recurring theme across the nation, we’ve got to put more emphasis on english and speech classes in our schools.

Actually, Mark, if you break it down by position there’s some good news and some not so good. The not so good- they were unranked in every offensive position except O- line,24th. They were unranked at linebacker, where they will need more bodies and better play in the 3-4. The good- they were ranked in the top five in 2 critical defensive positions where they need the most help, defensive end and defensive backs. D tackle was 12th with two 4 star kids(thank you Mike Thornton). I wonder if this reflects their concentrating on obvious needs or poor recruiting by the offensive staff or both. It is pretty bad when the defensive staff with only one guy for two critical months out performs the O-staff so completely. Maybe worth a future blog topic?

UGA fans need to settle down (the ones who are freaking out over losing Rogers) and the AJC needs to stop fueling the fire of angst. The juxtaposition of the “Tech will be fine with a low-ranked class” article and the “UGA not in the top-10, oh my” post is funny. UGA landed some very nice defensive recruits this year. Recruits who had offers from Florida, USC, Ohio State, etc… UGA was not a 5-star WR away from a title (as Bradley writes). They need LB’s (they landed up to 4 if you include the news that Samuel was shifted to LB) and they landed 2 top DTs. They will be fine.

UGA got exactly what they needed. They got skilled players the last two years. This year they added quality depth where it was needed. They were thin at DL and Safety and they picked up 5 quality D Linemen, and three safeties. Two of them are a couple of headhunters. They added quality depth on the O Line. I think this is a solid class.

It never gets easier in the SEC. Everybody gets good players. Still, alot goes into building a team. The one thing you can’t gage is chemistry. It is great to have talent but sometimes they become ME’s and not TEAM! Richt has a great pool of players to work with in 2010. New coaches, rejuvinated Richt, new attitude, etc should help make 2010 a stellar year. Gotta beat the Gators if we want to get back to SECCG!

All said and done, a pretty good class of new recruits. WQe lost a few that we might have had because of Martinez’s firing (so who cares), and those guys are smaller than the personnel in the typical 3-4 defense. If they and Grantham didn’t think they would be a good fit for Georgia, that’s OK. I wish tjem well wherever they go.
Jellybeandawg, who would you try to hire in Richt’s place that would do better? Adn what top-tier coach would want to come here after we fire the best coach we’ve ever had? They would simply get a raise to stay at their school, just like what happened with the DC search this year.

Everyone forgets the top five class that was signed last year with several of them red-shirting. That class also included Kawame Geathers that is going to be a beast in the middle of that 3-4 line. UGA is just fine. We now have a DC and a DB coach that knows what to do with that talent. Everyone is so worried that we are down and UF is still up because they signed the #1 class. Well, they needed to with most of their starters, especially on defense, leaving for the NFL. We will be back up at the top next year with Grantham and Lakatos having a year to identify the players they need and a year to develope a relationship with those players. I think the future is looking real good.

It’s all about coaching and preparation. If our coaching staff doesn’t do a better job next season, then four straight #1-rated recruiting classes couldn’t keep the team from underachieving. It’s time to get more out of our guys. If Richt can pull that off, we’ll all be happy.

CMR should put BoBo on the clock, he needs to show improvement or he will meet the same fate as Martinez. Stop telling me how Georgia’s offense leads the SEC in scoring & yards gained if they are piling on lesser opponents, but being blown out against Tenn, Fl, and Alabama. Bobo had the NFL’s #1 quarterback, first running back selected (Moreno) and 2nd round receiver (Mohamad)with future #1 receiver (Green) but couldn’t put up the points when he needed to against the Big 3…If he needs top talent to be mediocre, what do you expect him to do with lesser talent?

My assignment today was to write about Georgia’s class, not Tech’s. But I will say this, JB: Signing Day at Georgia is different than at Tech. (And I’ve covered both.) If Tech gets into the Top 20 — it did in 2007 — it’s a breakthrough year. If Georgia’s not in the Top 10, it’s a down year. That’s just the nature of the two programs.

Coach Mark Richt in addition to improving your soulja boy dance moves ( I really enjoyed watching the team perform it on the field during time outs against Arizona St. last year while we were loosing in the 4th quarter) I also hope you have been working on improving your tan, back flips from the 10-meter high dive, and basketball trick shots. These qualities are so fundamentally important in a head football coach that I don’t think we stand a chance of winning a game without them.

Think about it, Georgia beats Hawaii 24 months ago in the Sugar Bowl and gets ranked #1 in the country, with the expectation that Georgia would play for the coming season’s national championship. Look at how far this program has declined. Now, Georgia can’t seem to get the recruits it needs to build and sustain excellence. This coming season, not 2 years or 3 years or more re-building, it is vital for Georgia to beat Florida and for Georgia to play for the conference championship in December. Anything less and Georgia will (maybe possibly already has) become an additional member of the South Carolina, Kentucky, Vanderbilt club. End the love fest with Mark Richt. Start looking at the numbers.

Like I have said all along, give Grantham some time (2 years) and UGA will be back to the junkyard D that we are used to. Richt got what he needed quality depth. UF needed to sign that kind of class. 75% of your starters from last year are gone. Congrats on the class, but they are about two years away and there is no way to know if they will all qualify. And there is no way to know if they will end up being 5 star college players. Those are what they call projections. Lets wait and see if they live up to those projections.

Today’s coverage of GT and UGA underscore what has gone on all year. GT gets a free pass with a much lower ranked class than UGA because Paul Johnson is a Genious and can coach them up. UGA beats GT and the game was not a fluke but GT had more important games that mattered.
MB, if UGA had kept the old coaching staff and had a top 5 class you would write a lot of negative stuff about failure to change coaches. UGA made changes and it affected a couple of recruits on defense. It still seems UGA picked up some highly ranked defensive players overall, just not any 4 or 5 stars on Offense. The hack job all AJC writers have done on UGA over the last 12 months is awlful, but I would not expect anything less from a newspaper that is on the decline.

I agree! If losing Da’Rick was the price we had to pay for sending CWM and two others packing . . . and Grantham is as good as advertised, then it was indeed a bargain . . . no matter how good Da’Rick ends up being at Tennessee. This is still a very solid class and even though I would have liked to have signed the kid from Calhoun, I would have liked to have signed Whitaker from Warner Robins even more. It would have been great to have him teamed up with Thornton on the line. But I’m happy with what we have. They all have great potential to excel as Bulldawgs and most of all . . . they want to come to Athens. Now maybe with can finally start coaching these kids up to their potential. Go Dawgs! GATA!

How about some stories on the kids that did sign? I guess they don’t get as many hits on the board. I think this class addressed the defensive needs (could’ve used another LB or 2). Ga is frickkin LOADED on offense for 2010 (need the QB to step up). The sky isn’t falling and it ’s not the beginning of the end for CMR. Look for improvement in 2010 and in the mix for it all in 2011. It’s a great day to be a Bulldawg. Everyone simply needs to relax. The Dawgs are fine and in good hands. A 17 or 18 year old kid does not make or break a program like Georgia’s. Kids like this come out every single year and the next one will seem bigger and better. Changing the defensive staff will add much more than a few five star recruits. That unto itself can be factored into our “recruiting ranking.” Additionally, you might want to consider Richard Samuel, a five star MATURE talent coming into linebacker as boosting this year’s class. That alone puts this class in the top 10 ( as if it matters whether you are 5, 10 15 or 20 in mythical recruiting rankings……BTW, I doubt the Dawgs lose more than 2 games next year!(Hopefully less!!)

Bummer of a year compared to previous classes, but I do like the positions we filled. There will be a lot of defensive guys that don’t have to have Willie coached out of them before they get coached up. It will be interesting to see how they take to the new system.
Honestly, I would be concerned about the defensive class is we were still in a 4-3. Not enough big bodies to replace Owen, Atkins, and Weston. Most of the guys signed seemed like they could play multiple positions on defense. I am sure it wasn’t intended that way, but could work out well.

We will have an established OL with 3 years playing together teo RB’s and a slew of WR’s, and an All SEC Freshman TE to help Murray. They will be in total rebuilding mode on their defense with a DC that no one has heard of and was an assistant position coach in the NFL not even a position coach. He was the guy getting coffee for the position coach. Going to be a tough year for them next year and all those spoiled Gator fans will be doing a lot of crying.

For the record, I think you and Schultz do a pretty good job. I laugh at all the calls of bias on any side. You guys are just saying what you feel and by and large I think you are fairly on point.
I do have to say that I lost almost all respect for Chip this past week. Just seemed like he was writing from antagonistic position. His word choices just didn’t seem professional at all. He wasn’t reporting, he was almost, well, gloating at the misfortunes.
I consider myself a pretty level headed Dawg. Yet, I cannot help but believe he enjoyed our misfortunes this week. I will choose to skip reading his material from here on out and I would suggest fellow Dawgs, who didn’t like what he wrote, do the same. If his blogs don’t get any hits, he’ll won’t be writing them for long. Don’t waste your time calling him names. It only helps his cause.

Read the post a little closer and you will see I said players and not team rankings. How can you really compare team rankings when some like UGA only sign 18-19 players and others sign 30, and they only signed 19 because thats how many slots they had available.
Also how did that top class do this year against Bama? Shows once again that recruiting rankings really dont matter, its more about getting guys that fit in the system and that are passionate about playing.

1st and foremost, this particular signing class is solid from top to bottom. Getting mike thornton is a tremendous coup because he can play rush end or nose tackle in the new 3-4 with ctg. Lastly, losing darick rogers is really not big of a deal with green, king, wooten, charles, figgins and white all coming back. Plus if Marlon Brown is able to improve over his 1st season, it will really have positives to the offense. And as a dawg fan, karma can be cold because Marlon Brown did the same thing last spurning the hometown vols to come to athens. And in closing, don’t let uf’s class deter our hope for our program. Uga still has more guys on active rosters than florida does. Currently after texas and florida, georgia has as many espnu top150 players as california! So there is still hope when our home state is considered one of the top producers of elite talent.

Not a good day for GATA’s…Trading down to sign lower level recruits because your hoped-for ones didn’t sign with you.
No matter what spin you try to put on things with a new DC, it just doesn’t fly. After all, you’re the ones that have had such great recruiting classes in the past 3 years. Now you have what? – a 15th or 20th-rated class based on the various rating services? I feel bad for the unrealistic expectations y’all are putting on Grantham.
The sad truth is that Coach Richt’s time has come and gone. The SEC is just too tough a conference for his cojones. As a Gator fan I’d like him to be your coach for a long time however, I don’t think that’s going to be the case. Tennessee with Dooley is our better rival than UGA, sorry to say.

Most bloggers on this site do not know about the NCAA guidelines on players and recruiting numbers. This class is exactly the number that we could sign as set up by the rule book. Auburn got more qty because they apparently lost plenty of players. They were allowed to sing more kids and this is true of most of the SEC.
UGA is stockpiled from 2008, 09 and now this class. UGA got their D needs and losing the Calhoun boy is not big deal. Heck, I would have placed him at running back due to his size and bulk. He would not have played at wide out as a starter ……..no way. Marvelous Marlon Brown will have something to say about that as will Gren,Wooten, King, Troupe and Durden and too mnay other highly regarded TEs and such.

Mark, this was my other post with regard to your opinion about the significance of UGA not signing a 5 star recruit and Auburn being so may spots ahead of UGA. Thanks for clarifying that coaching matters more. Thanks for sounding more intelligent on this article than the one ‘A most unusual sight: UGA absent from Rivals.com’s Top 10′. There’s really no need to shake things up and ruffle people’s feathers b/c it actually makes you sound uninformed. But if the purpose of your articles is to rustle people’s feather and get under people’s skin, it seems to work for some who are easily angered. But for your sake and reputation, try to write in a way that you sound well-informed about the matter.
********************************************************************
Hey Mark, have you become and expert in recruiting? UGA has been in the top ten every year yet in 2009, UGA finished the season unranked and an 8-5 record. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to have the best talent come to UGA but that’s half the battle in becoming a consistent top ten team year after year. Coaching and having coachable kids have a lot to do with a successful program. Look at what Saban did for Alabama with a lot less talent than Florida. Also, you can’t forget about the 2,3,4 star recruits that made significant contributions to the football program at UGA and have moved to the NFL.
Can you explain in detail how significant it is when UGA does not land one 5-star recruit and when Auburn is umpteenth spots ahead of UGA? There are a handful of schools out there that consistently do not land a top 25 recruting class yet they finish in the top 25 rankings at the end of the season.
Please explain since you seem to be an expert

Bradley, I speculated on the Schultz post earlier – or at least asked the question – if the roles had been reversed would the two of you have taken the same tack? Would you be praising Tech’s class while asked ‘what’s wrong with Georgia’?
And for the guy that dogged Georgia for having beaten a way overrated Hawaii team a couple of years ago…a win that set us up for that #1 ranking. I challenge the hell out of any team that wins a National Championship to do so with the number of injuries to starting players at critical positions that Georgia had. Show me some of those ’stats’ and we’ll talk. And even with those injuries and big losses to Florida and Alabama – loses that with an even-handed called game at critical points, very well would have ended differently – and three points to Tech that was an aberration as proven by the ‘09 game and we still doubled up on a ranked Michigan State in the Citrus Bowl. And you take the forty or fifty million dollars that Stafford and Moreno decided they would go for and have those kids return for another year – then who knows what we’re talking about here. Point is stuff happens and speculating about all this is just that – speculation.
We’ll be waiting and watching you, Bradley, just to see if you’re capable of any kind of a sustained positive treatment of the University of Georgia’s athletic teams.

I hate to reveal my ignorance, but how many signees did we have room for? I see other schools signing 27 players. Obviously we didn’t need that many, but how many did we need? If we played in the ACC or the Big East, we’d win it every year. Just our luck that 4 other SEC schools are ahead of us. I think Schultz is right, coaching is what counts. I hope Grantham is as good as advertised. If so we’ll be fine. How many of these great recruits that other schools got will be riding the pine in future years? And even the pros make mistakes (Ryan Leaf).

I agree that the firings disrupted what would have been a top ten class. However, sometimes one has to take a step back to go forward. I think that Grantham will be a huge addition for player development. Iowa never has a top 20 recruiting class but seems to end up in the top10 or 15 every year. So, I think player develop is equally as important as recruitment. We all saw top ten classes with Martinez, but it was rarely reflected on the field. At this point, I am willing to sit back and give it a year and see what Grantham can do.

Mr Me -
Yes, I noticed you had indicated player ratings vary, and yes I was talking about team. But the player ratings vary for all teams, not just UGA. In order to smooth out the variability you noted, take a larger viewpoint…the team.
I sympathize with your concern about numbers versus “quality”, etc. On the other hand, I’d suggest that in any given year the number of available scholarships vary, but that doesn’t diminish the quality or quantity of players on other teams! More good players is better than less. As you point out, a 2-star may end up being better than a 5-star. But we don’t know that yet. In order to compare today, some measure has to be used, but if you prefer to howl in joy one year, then complain the next, I’d say you can’t have it both ways.
To use “average” stars, benefits those with only few “quality” players, eg USC, but ignores that there are 22 positions (plus kickers) to field for a game. It also minimizes the value of those 2 or 3-star players who may be better than the pontificator’s grading.

So where did we fall in the rankings … between 10 and 20? Still not that bad and who knows which prospects will actually be productive. We may actually have a higher percentage of kids excel. If so, this class might be just as good as some of the top 10 classes in the past.
I’m excited about things. Can’t wait to see Murry (my guess is it’ll be him at QB) and I’m especially fired up for our new DC. We signed some great guys on the defensive side of the ball … Garrison Smith, Alec Ogletree, Mike Thornton and TJ Stripling.

WAY too much weight is given to the fictitious star and class ratings bestowed by Rivals, et al. There are countless examples of 5 star busts and 3 star success stories. Hell, half the first round picks in the NFL are busts, tell me how you can truly evaluate a seventeen year old. What a joke.

FSU fans have told me for years that Chuck Amato made those great teams at FSU. He was a real hard-a** on the players. When he left that is when the program started to decline. Richt never had a coach like that. Hopefully Grantham or Lakatos will be the hard-a** we need. Richt needs to step back and let his coaches make these players tough. I don’t care if they are a 5-star or a -5 star. I want us to get players that are coachable and play with heart. It’s time for Georgia to have players beg to come to UGA, not us beg them.

Winning will solve everything. This is a sub-par recruiting class by UGA standards, but frankly most recruits have very little impact their first seasons. The low recruiting ranking is a symptom of the problems that we have had since the # 1 ranking. The multiple injuries and very young offensive line undermined that season, and last year we felt the losses of Stafford and Knowshon, as well as Sturdivant. Our coaching was also deplorable, which is why Willie Martinez deservedly was fired. We have a maturing team that is compromised of top 5 recruiting classes. With good coaching, our defense should rebound dramatically. We have 10 starters returning to offense who will hopefully prop up the young QB until he figures it out. Winning big against the teams we are supposed to beat (Ky, Vandy, etc.) and beating Florida in a down year will help a lot.

When you start hearing phrases like “down year in the state of Georgia,” or “this kid is a real diamond in the rough,” or “we don’t put much stock in ratings or recruiting services,” then you know your team is on the down hill side of the curve. This is the kind of crap us Auburn fans heard out of Tuberville and Little Bowden and it proved disastrous in both instances. Thankfully that now appears over for us. If you do start hearing it out of Richt then you might as well resolve yourself to mediocrity and a slow slide down until the University administration grows the pair to do what needs doing. From what I see that is the general trend of things over there now. Good luck with that. War Eagle.

Mark, Thanks for sounding more intelligent on this article than the one ‘A most unusual sight: UGA absent from Rivals.com’s Top 10′. In your other article, you suggest the significance of UGA not signing a 5 star recruit and Auburn being so many spots ahead of UGA as far as recruiting.
Thanks for clarifying that coaching matters more regardless of who you have.

toga, you’re delusional. I can actually see Georgia at 10-2 next season (UF and one other loss), or MAYBE 9-3, but that’s about as low as it goes. The defense will be better (how could it be worse?), the offense will be better (and certainly less turnover-prone), and the schedule is easier. This past year’s Georgia squad could have easily been 10-2 had the officials not had a meltdown against LSU and had the Dawgs not turned the ball over four times in the second half against Kentucky. And next year’s team will be better-coached and more experienced. I think we’ll win 10, at least–and Tech loses to the Dawgs again.
Oh, and Kirby Smart can forget it. He might as well never even visit Athens again. In fact, there’s a petition out there to revoke his diploma…

SSI…….good one.
Actually, I felt worse when he was leaving, because I knew UF would land a top notch guy. And with such a major transformation of the team coming, I figured new blood, new excitement was pretty timely. I was kinda PO’d to be honest.
My gut tells me that an interim coach (that in thier heart no FL is that thrilled with) and a HC in limbo (that can never live up to expectations now)., every single player that casual observers have ever heard of gone……….We dodged a bullet with you NOT getting the energy and national attention from a new guy.
As far as this class…out of this world. But this is the result of the Gator on top of the world when these boys were soph, and Jr. Playing time will become a factor, somebody new will be hot in the next few years. Things will cycle. No lack of talent for a while down there for a while if they didnt sign anybody for 2 yrs though.

Well for 1 I think this years recruiting class was very good. The Dawgs loaded up on big linemen which was what they needed. 2nd I don’t think the loss of Rogers was so bad. I live in the north Ga. area and have seen him play several times over the past few years. Trust me he is good, very good. But when he has played against top teams and players hes has only been above average. The Bigger loss was last year when Ga. let the Bowman kid from Ridgeland get away to Ala. The Bowman kid could play circles around Rogers, trust me on this I have seen both.

The question is not does UGA have the talent to win the SEC East (the rest is a by-product of winning the division, and a BCS Title Game appearance is sheer luck most of the time…just ask LSU and Florida). The REAL question is can Richt get the most out of his talent next season which is a watershed year. Georgia is already 2-0 (S.W. Louisiana and Idaho State). So would a 7-3 record against the remaining ten teams be sufficient enough for him to keep his job? Maybe. Depends on how bad the losses are and to whom. Another 20-30 point blowout to Florida does not bode well. A loss to Tennessee will undoubtedly cost him his job although that is the most likely SEC win on the home schedule along with the Vandy game (talk about some anger there, he’ll have his team pretty well prepared for that one). A loss to Auburn is almost certain. Maybe even a Tech loss. So 10-2 may be the only chance he has to save his job, and anything less is going to have the boosters and season ticket holders up in arms (10-2 is really 8-2). Arkansas will be no easy task, even in Athens. Then there’s South Carolina in Columbia coached by Spurrier. There is a lot of work to do, and the off-season weight training had best be improved as well. UGA has an open door to the East title if the right things are done off-season. The roster is flat loaded (naysayers should take a look at the backgrounds of the players). Todd Grantham will have one helluva defense too.

Integrity in recruiting is dead and just plain boring to kids today. To recruit a top class a coach must rack up plenty of secondary recruiting violations (you only get a slap on the wrist for those), explain to recruits that God favors you and your program, offer a scholarship to the best friend of 5 star recruit (even if that best friend would not start at a D2 school), have young girls trained by former strippers of the Gold club train on how to persuade young men how to commit and provide plenty of bells and whistles. Until UGA learns to use the same recruiting techniques employed by rivals their program will continue to fail.

playing freshmen in the SEC, especially at skill positions result in losses.
UGA has 10 returning starters on offense and a QB that would have takebn his lumps as a true freshman and done just as well as Cox if he hadn’t broken his leg in HS.
Those 10 starters and the 4 coming back on defense are all that matter for 2010. UGA will run the ball and play aggressive defense again.

Richt, Garner, and co. needs to shape up. I am tired of the Tennessee’s and FSU’s of the world, and anybody else, taking our recruits!

kcg76dawg, when you say that UGA has “more guys on active rosters” are you speaking of the NFL? If so that point could be taken two ways. First and probably unlikely, top recruits come to Athens and get the coaching they need to excel at the next level. That certainly didn’t happen under CWM’s watch and some might also say that about Bobo. The other and at least recently more likely is that top recruits come to Athens, regress, and then get coached back up to their potential in the NFL. Let’s hope that the new blood in the Georgia staff will change this for the better beginning right away.

As well they will be playing with 10 returning starters around them which makes them the only new face on offense. Good try though, go back to the drawing board and tinker around again for another witty comeback.

I remember Murray’s last high school game in which he tore it up in his last playoff game and just blistered the opposing defenses dbs. If i remember correctly he was something like 5 of 23 for 27 yards passing. And to think that all these dawg fans are pinning their hopes on this one kid who got exposed against a high school defense. Can you imagine what an SEC defense is gonna do to this freshman? Besides, I thought Logan Grey was the guy dawg fans were clamoring for when Joe Cox was sucking. Then again all Logan did was come in and throw a pick 6 on his first and only pass in the UF game. Sad times they are a coming to Athens. This is a program in a quick descent into the abyss. Gonna be scary to watch this 18th rated class go up against the Gator’s consensus no. 1 class over the next 4 years.

The Dawgs will be just fine next year. We’ve had higher-ranked classes in the recent past and have pretty little to show for it. Like Mark said, we were getting plenty of defensive stars only to have them coached down by CWM. I’m expecting great things from both Coach Grantham’s 3-4 defense and the play of a committed young QB like Murray or Mettenberger in 2010. CMR won the SEC in two years where no one (not even the vast majority of Georgia fans, myself included) gave us a shot at even winning the East. Go Dawgs!

Big deal about the recruiting. We struggled with all those top ten classes and our D has been under-coached since CWM took over for Van Gorder. Funny how NFL scouts are all of a sudden jazzed about Owens and Atkins while we could never consistently shut teams down. We just weren’t getting the most out of the talent. IF Grantham can coach we will be fine as we have plenty of athletes.

But on further inspection, 1) We have a RS Junior QB who has three years in the system who was National Gatorade Player of the year in H.S.2) A veteran O Line returning (every player has started) with plenty of depth. 3) Two of our top receivers will be back after being injured all last year. 4) Four D Linemen who have been starters return plus an incredible DL recruiting class 5) Three out of four who have started in the secondary. Biggest concerns will be TE and CB opposite of Jenoris Jenkins. We will still be highly highly competitive!!!!

Many experts predict that we will finish another 8-4 or 7-5 season in 2010. With a new quarterback and new defense scheme, I agree with such prediction because UGA belongs to SEC. The real question is what about 2011? We just got 18 new players, and with such lack of depth (after some injuries: this happens every year) our football team is going down from here. Being optimistic can blind you!

26.2 “Loved your line ” no good seasons lead to Shreveport”. Food for thought – wonder how many 4 and 5 star recruits schools like TCU, Boise State, Iowa, GT, Cinncinnati have yet they were in the BSC Bowl games last year.”
Although he didn’t mean it to be this is the whole problem with post season college football and rankings and BCS and all that goes with it. Out of the teams listed above, only Iowa REALLY had one of the best 30 or 40 football teams in the country. If UGA had played in the same conference as Cinci, TCU, or Boise, they would have been undefeated last year, a year in which we had the worst team in a decade. If we had played in the ACC only VaTech would have had a chance to beat us. But when you play in the SEC it’s much different than what ever that conference Cinci plays in. They make the ACC look like the big leagues. Yet they get the national rankings and get to go to the big bowls because they have great records when in fact they go all year and play NOBODY until post season. Boise and TCU STILL have played nonone. It’s a shame SEC teams don’t get the due they deserve when a 5 loss SEC team could drub Cinci or TCU or Boise. Oh yeah and Tech.

Dawg Fans there is no need to worry about this class as I am very confident that there will be several outstanding players in this class, and another fact to be considered is that there will be coaches in Athens to coach them up. Let us wish the young man from Calhoun well, although his friends dad may have had more influence on him than his own family. We have an ounstanding Wide Receiver entering his Junior Year in A.J. Green and a host of young receivers in support, so we will be fine, and next year we will have our pick of some fine Receivers. When we see all the waffling and the make for T.V. antics by some of these Recruits we again see the contrast with A. J. Green, who made his decision to be a Bulldog and committed a year in advance without wavering and with all the attention grabbing antics. That is another reason why I admire that young man so much, and why he will be a hell of a pro.

Richt had a tough year this year but I hope he is there for along time. You stay at a place for a period of time and you will have a down year. Was Bob Stoops a worse coach this year, was Pete Carroll a worse coach this year. You don’t have to win NC’s to be successful. In my opinion Richt is pious and not genuine. With pious people, the problem is never with themselves, It is always external. I have never once heard Mark Richt take the blame for a
poor performance. The blame is always placed on external factors such as injuries, poor execution, etc. and the critics don’t know what they are talking about. In case CMR has not noticed, there is a scoreboard and It knows What It’s talking about!
Dr Adams and Damon Evans are only motivated by revenue. When the revenues drop to a predetermined level, it will not make one bit of difference what a “great guy” Richt is, he will be gone. You can take that to the bank my friend.

The state of Georgia had 30 players that were rated 4-star or better by rivals. Georgia is probably the 4th most fertile recruiting state in the nation obviously behind Florida, California, and Texas. If Georgia could keep all the talent in state and snag a few stars out of state, they could probably win the national title every year.
When you are only getting 6 out of those 30 4 stars in state, thats a major problem in recruiting. Florida, Tennessee, Auburn, Clemson, Alabama, LSU, Florida St. among others are killing Georgia in state.
Darick Rogers was the big fish that got away. What about Mack Brown? Storm Johnson? Rajon Neal? The state’s best running backs getting away.
Markeith Ambles, Juwan James, Jeffrey Whitaker, Micheal Taylor, the list goes on and on. Clemson came in and got some good cornerbacks from the metro area. Tech did pretty well getting some good talent that flew under the radar in state.
This is a reason to be concerned Georgia fans. The balance of power is shifting, the run of top 10 recruiting classes is over. If you cant keep your prime in state talent at home how can you ever expect to compete with the Florida’s and Alabama’s of the world.

EAZY E. Good point. Clemson pulls big time players out of Atlanta every year.

JB: You’re right. At Tech, we coach em up. At UGA, you coach em down.

Urban Meyer is so cocky and so confident that he loses Tebow and goes on leave Thanksgiving weekend and still bags a group of recruits that
most NFL teams do not have. Good luck dawgs. Meyer is running a juggernaut on autopilot. He could coach the games with a remote control.

No matter how bad this bunch of recruits is, UGA is just darn lucky to not have to end up with DaRick. It would have been better to be on 4 years NCAA probation than to have that happen. Even the infamous death sentence would be better. Every dawg needs to be on his knees for weeks being grateful about that. Man are we relieved. What a stroke of luck. Its like winning the lottery and better than any BCS bowl. It may be better than to lose that guy than it was to get Hershel.

To that I say “Pride cometh before a fall”, read Proverbs! That situation in Florida is just strange.
