A most unusual sight: UGA absent from Rivals.com’s Top 10

It’s a strange feeling for Georgia fans, and it has to feel a bit odd to Mark Richt. According to Rivals.com, Georgia’s recruiting class of 2010 ranks 15th nationally and sixth in the SEC. (The ratings — updated as of 10:48 a.m. Wednesday — are subject to change.) That would be the Bulldogs’ lowest national rating since 2001, when Mark Richt had been on the job barely two months.

Over Rich’s first nine years, Georgia finished outside Rivals’ Top 10 only once. A year-by-year look:

2001: Sixteenth nationally, third in the SEC.
2002: Third in the nation, second in the SEC.
2003: Sixth in the nation, third in the SEC.
2004: Sixth in the nation, second in the SEC.
2005: Tenth in the nation, second in the SEC.
2006: Fourth in the nation, second in the SEC.
2007: Ninth in the nation, sixth in the SEC.
2008: Seventh in the nation, third in the SEC.
2009: Sixth in the nation, third in the SEC.

About here, you might be saying, “So what if Georgia’s not in the Top 10 this time? All those highly rated classes really only resulted in one SEC title.” (That being in 2005; the 2002 conference championship was achieved largely with Jim Donnan’s recruits.) Not to be a Gloomy Gus, but here’s what:

When you get used to a school lighting up the recruiting board, it’s significant when it doesn’t. It’s significant when Georgia doesn’t land a single 5-star recruit. (That last happened in 2007.) It’s significant when an Auburn program in Year 2 under Gene Chizik lands 13 spots ahead of Georgia in Year 10 under Richt. And from this we can draw only one conclusion:

Mark Richt needs to rent some white limos.

The national ranking may not be there this year, but just look at the class as it stands. It may not have stand out offensive 5 star recruits, it’s a class built around the defense, something we need right now.

I think when we fired 3 coaches, we had to expect some growing pains. As teams have shown, though, coaching is more important than recruiting. If that were not the case, there is no way that Tech, Iowa, Boise, and TCU play in BCS games this new years.

I want UGA to recruit well as much as anyone. But more importantly, I want us to coach well. If we coach well this fall, we won’t need to worry about recruiting rankings. 2010 is a VERY important year in Athens.

This was an inevitable result of moves that needed to be made. Yes it’s sort of odd they get no 5 star guy this year but the program itself is healthier today because of what they did last year. Richt held the program toegther last year, made necessary coaching moves and they finished strong on an uptick after a very difficult year.

Not being in the top 10 doesn’t mean they aren’t getting some fantastic players that fit the holes they have. There isn’t any reason not to be excited about the coming year for UGA.

Oh God here goes Mark Bradley again. I can just see him laughing as he writes these articles.

Georgia is not signing 25+ players like some of these other schools. We do not have that many spots to fill…which is a good thing. If you actually look at the rating of our recruits, we’re right up at the top. Quality over quantity people.

ESPN says this morning, “Georgia, despite not having any commitment from a top-10 player, has the nation’s No. 4 class, according to ESPNU. Alec Ogletree, a safety from Newnam, Ga., is their top-ranked player.”

But let’s just overlook logic and keep stirring the pot. It’s more fun that way, right?

People get too caught up in the number of stars next to a player’s name. Every year there are 4 and 5 stars who don’t live up to expectations. And, there are 2 & 3 stars that surpass them, ( see 2 Tim Jennings about to play in second Super Bowl, and 3 star David Pollack). The difference between a 3 and 4 star is minimal, if accurate. Everybody take a deep breath. UGA is getting what it needs in this class with help in the secondary and d-line. Adding Thornton is huge, one more uncommitted big name signs with UGA and we could be back in the top ten again.

You know, I would rather have a class recruited out of the “Top 10″ than to have a one in the “Top 10″ and in the next 2 years be on probabation, have players being kicked off the team, coaches investigated, etc. Richt is doing fine and showing that he will not promise to a kid something he “shouldn’t” being delievered. As a TECH fan you would think I would be happy that they appear to not be recruiting to par, but they will be ready, they will win and they will surprise a lot of programs. this because they are doing it right!

As Paul Harvey used to say … for the rest of the story’ Auburn NEEDED bodies and got them. They were below the allowed levels in sheer manpower and as a result, could sign kids by saying that you will play soon, if not start. Congrats to Auburn. Very fine job.

UGA did get the needed D bodies. Calhoun’s Rogers? A nice grab for UT but he was not going to make or break UGA’s class. Look at every position on the UGA squad and we are deep, especially with the w. out spot that rogers would have been fourth string. Afterall, Marlon Brown was a diamond in the rough like rogers is. His routes lack crispness.

I love the bounty of linebackers soon to arrive and the D ends soon to arrive PLUS the ones already on campus. We needed Thorton and Garrsion SMith more than we needed another wide out with issues.

Seriously? You’re commenting to congratulate the first poster? Dude, things must be real tough at the AJC these days.

Also, who don’t you bother mentioning the AVERAGE rating of the incoming UGA commits? I think I know why — because our average ranking per recruit is WELL WITHIN the national top ten. We are signing FAR FEWER total players than a lot of other schools in the top ten. You think that’s worth mentioning? I do.

But that wouldn’t make for quite as sensational a story, I guess. That would be a little too fair and balanced for your work.

Way to go, Mark. More disgraceful “journalism” out of you guys. To think, I used to have respect for the AJC Sports folks…

Secondly, as I’ve said many times, UGA’s glory years came against Zook, Shula, lazy-arse Tuberville, and Gailey. Now that there are better coaches in neighboring states he will be further exposed for what he is-slightly better than mediocre. Sad thing is that the East will suck next year to the point that a 2 or 3 loss UF or UGA will end up in Atlanta. The West is much better overall at this point.

Next year, Georgia may be the most loaded state in nation with college football recruits (UGA will have plenty of scholarships). Further, Grantham and company will have a whole year to recruit their guys. The Rogers recruiting was a freak thing, aided by a third party who felt that GA stubbed his kid. Rankings come and go, in my honest opinion. I’ve never really been too enamored with whether a team was 1st or 30th in the recruiting classes, and this year is no different.

Georgia’s had a few top classes in the past 20 years that didn’t play up to their expected levels. I forget the year, but there was one in the early 90s that people thought would make us national championship contenders, and we didn’t exactly hit those levels in that era for reasons that extended beyond the recruiting world.

Richt and co. will right the ship this year, I believe, and the “recruiting classes” will follow.

I don’t understand the doom and gloom reaction to all of this. From the list of recruits the Dawgs have landed so far, we are getting exactly what we need and where we need it most. 5-star ratings are crap once the season begins. It comes down to how well the coaches plug in the right guys at the right positions, at the right time. From the looks of it, with quality coaching…like Georgia possesses….great things can happen. Georgia has had one bad year, and all the pundits are trying to spin it as the end of the world. Mark Richt is at his best when the pressure is on. Its on…and he is focused with the intent to win. Thats exactly where he should be right now, and Dawgnation will benfit from it.

Hey Mark, it’s kind of funny that 2000 was UGA’s last substandard class…wonder how it turned out…hmmm…let me see….

Reggie Brown…still in the NFL
Chris Clemons…still in the NFL
Nic Clemons…in the NFL for a while
David Greene…had to settle for big, slow guy when Jason Campbell opted for Auburn
Arnold Harrison…still in the NFL
Sean Jones…still in the NFL
Musa Smith…great college RB
Johnathan Sullivan…better college DT than Stroud or Seymour
Will Thompson…3 year starter
Horace Willis…always will owe him a debt of gratitude…after he got busted burning some weed, got kicked out of UGA before practice started…wound up being the DB beaten by Michael Johnson for the 2002 Auburn win…

All in all, I hope that the 2010 class turns out as badly as 2000 did…

Ironically, Andre Zellner and Albert Hollis were the two really big fish in that class…Zellner never could get into school, but played for the Cowboys for several years after Fort Valley St, and Hollis had that catastrophic leg injury

Mark,

I think this year will be the turning point for UGA. I agreed with you completely a few months ago that the program had been on Auto-pilot for the past few years. Sometimes we all have to evaluate ourselves and make tough decisions which i think CMR did this past year. I think it’s absolutely amazing that we pulled the class that we did considering we were down 3 coaches for the most important recruiting period. This year was going to be a small class anyway so we really can’t compare our classes to Auburn of Florida. However, i do think we filled several of our needs in this class. Remember a team is made up of 4-5 recruiting classes and UGA has been lights out for the past few years in recruiting. Sure Losinig DR took alot of luster off of this day but we are absolutely loaded at WR and i think our path to the SEC championshiop will be on the backs of Ealey and King.

We return 10 starters on offense and have a much better DC this year. If we win our usual 10 games this year then i expect us to be in the top 5 recruiting next year

Before we start trashing UGA for dropping in the recruiting rankings, it should be noted that the “North Avenue Trade School” has been absent from the top tier in recuiting for quite a while. This mythical measure of success doesn’t seem to have mattered much to them.

It doesn’t matter how many stars you sign with—it’s what round of the NFL draft you are selected in!

Let me get this straight. When our classes were among the top and not producing because our coaches stunk people were pi$$ed. Now that we’ve seemingly upgraded our coaching staff and our class is not among the top people are pi$$ed? Coaching is what makes players better. Very few players are 1st round draft picks when they get on campus and are still when they leave. 5 star recruits fizzle all the time in college football and 2 star recruits become AA. Happens in every sport all the time.

Coaching boys, coaching is what counts.

Hey Mark, have you become and expert in recruiting? UGA has been in the top ten every year yet in 2009, UGA finished the season unranked and an 8-5 record. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice to have the best talent come to UGA but that’s half the battle in becoming a consistent top ten team year after year. Coaching and having coachable kids have a lot to do with a successful program. Look at what Saban did for Alabama with a lot less talent than Florida. Also, you can’t forget about the 2,3,4 star recruits that made significant contributions to the football program at UGA and have moved to the NFL.

Can you explain in detail how significant it is when UGA does not land one 5-star recruit and when Auburn is umpteenth spots ahead of UGA? There are a handful of schools out there that consistently do not land a top 25 recruting class yet they finish in the top 25 rankings at the end of the season.

One of the reasons we are losing recruits is because of these blogs. If the REAL UGA fans would stop complaining about every little thing, maybe these kids would get a better vibe from our fan base. So what, if DaRick want to be loyal to the people who put foo in his mouth. None of you did. Instead of crying about the four or five that did not want to be Bulldogs, You ought to be thankful to those 18 (including Mike Thornton) that WANTED to come to UGA. Welcome new dogs! I personally feel good about playing with the ones we got! No one was hotter at the end of the season than UGA, and if you keep comparing your team to others, instead of being the best you can be, you will always be second best. Ya’ll are scared of Fla. and Ala. and Tenn.! We have the talent and now the coaches to excel. If you’re gonna be a Dawg, BE A GAWG! If not, get off this blog. Its good to be a DAWG!!!!!

All this big deal made about Auburn. Something to keep this in perspective, Auburn was playing a dozen schalrship athletes below the NCAA limit last year and was very short on defense. The coach is on a honey moon and a decent first year, chances are he’ll be there next 3 to 4 years. Of course kids are going to flock there.

UGA needed big guys up front especially on defense they don’t get the glamour of a WR or RB. UGA has signed 2 very highly WR recruits each of the past 2 year and some other good WR/TEs (Charles?) WR is not the worry this year (Don’t forget Durham comes back from injury, hopefully Marlon steps up). UGA lost some secondary recruits that CWM had recruited which is to be expected. I like that UGA picked up a new OL recruit yesterday.

Don’t get me wrong I fear the program needs further changes to get back on top but the recruiting ranking is not the big of a deal. Beside we’ll see how the day pans out, it is far to early to call. ESPN had UGA #9 when I checked earlier this morning.

I worry about the recruiting, but when all said in done, UGA in top 15 recruiting keeps the program steady while Grantham gets a chance to resurrect the defense. I love how Bradley is calling Georgia’s recruiting class “lackluster” while ESPN posted this:

The Dawgs lost four-star WR Da’Rick Rogers (Calhoun, Ga./Calhoun) and four-star CB Nickell Robey late, but still have a solid class with 17 commits, including six players from the ESPNU 150. RB Ken Malcome (Decatur, Ga./Southwest Dekalb) is a top-10 RB and has the tools to become a very good every-down back. Georgia also landed a couple top O-linemen in 6-5, 265-pound, four-star OG Kolton Houston (Buford, Ga./Buford) and 6-5, 280-pound, four-star OT Brent Benedict (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School). Defensively, Georgia landed one of the top safeties in this year’s class, four-star Alec Ogletree (Newnan, Ga./Newnan). The 6-3, 214-pounder looks and hits like an outside linebacker but has the speed of a safety. Plus, he’s a special teams demon. Georgia also landed top-five OLB T.J. Stripling (Decatur/Southwest Dekalb), who — at 6-5, 202 pounds — likely will develop into a defensive end for the Dawgs.

Recruiting kids is about four things:

1) immediate playing time (Rogers to UT)
2) buzz around the program that suggests that success is near (Auburn, FSU)
3) program playing at current championship level (UF, Texas, Bama)
4) loyalty to a particular program that you grew up dreaming about playing for

Being a young team with a lot of players coming back with no real open starting spots and a dissapointing 2009 this lull is not all that unexpected. They just need to get back to double digit wins in 2010 and this will all be forgotten. As I have said here and will say again, UGA wins the East in 2010 and Bark Madly will have to stick his finger in the air and readjust the sails.

Finally, the reality is that some of those prior classes did not pan out. There is nothing that says that this class won’t overachieve where some others have underachieved.

On the contrary, that attracts players to your school as well. Isn’t it interesting that we are around the top, even the top twenty, with less the 20 commits. Our 18 are stout, and those other 2 and 3 star athletes on other school’s lists are just filers. Our 18 will play, and they will play well.

I really don’t get excited on NSD anymore. I remember getting excited about Reshard Dudley, Marquis Elmore(5 star), Marcus Jackson (4 star), Brandon Miller (5 star top player in GA), Richard Cook ( 4 star), Dana Grayden ( 4 star), Eric Mclendon (5 star), Josh Johnson (5 star), Seth Watts (4 star), Naderris Ward ( 4 star), Chris Little (4 star), Brandon Lang (4 stars) and Toby Jackson (4 stars)

Unfortunately most of these great players never played a down at UGA. Brandon Miller never lived up to the hype and Mudcat Elmore was a big disappointmen.

I also remember getting excited about signing the no.1 running back in the nation a few years ago Stafon Johnson and then seemingly have to settle for a running back from NJ Knowshon Moreno.

Point is we have no idea how these players will turn out until they hit the field. Remember the great Wr from a few years ago Kenny Carr that almost picked us and instead pick FSU. Remember John Harris who signed with us but didn’t make the grades.

NSD is all show. I want to reserve my judgement on this class until crunch time

Mark, it obviously matters if you get good recruits. The point is that the reason for the slip from 8 to 12 or whatever is obvious and you don’t recognize it but choose to indicate the CMR has lost his touch in year ten. You know this is bogus but pursue it anyway. There is not one UGA fan that wants Willie back so we could make the top ten in recruiting which is what would have happened. We will take to 12 and Coach Grantham 100% of the time and you know it.

Dawg Tired

February 3rd, 2010

Mark – Am I wrong in thinking the #17 ranking for this class was before Thornton was signed? Would that not cause the ranking to be somewhat better?

Having said that, I’m looking for the TEAM to get ranked as high as this recruiting class is ultimately ranked. This will happen if the players are coached up.

Tim Jennings is playing in the Super Bowl. His “star rating” = 2. This year we lost to a Kentucky team without any recruiting classes ranked in the top 10. Thomas Davis may be one of the best players ever at UGA. His star ranking? I’m not sure he had one.

An interesting question? Does anyone know how highly regarded Herschel Walker was? He is the greatest dawg of all time, imho.

Finally, how many teams would like to have a top 15 recruiting class(I’m reasonably sure we’ll get that high in the finally rankings)? Nevertheless, I am convinced of two things: (1) we are better off without these prima donnas whose word is meaningless; and (2) regardless of who we sign, the key to success is coaching.

Mike

One thing to remember about recruiting rankings, the amount of recruits you have in your class can raise your position as much as the quality. Auburn ranks in the top 5 because they have 30 recruits in their class. The average star rating is only slightly ahead of UGA (3.53 comparted to UGAs 3.5). This appears to be Mark Richts smallest class with under 20 recruits (18) right now, otherwise this would likely be a top ten class as well. Look at USC. They arent top 5 either because they only signed 16 recruits so far. Yet, they have over a 4.0 star rating because 4 are 5 star recruits and nearly all the rest are 4 star.

Richard Seymour was the last guy that signed in his class and turned out to be a Great DT. Kelin Johnson was a 2 star player while Pollack was a 3 star FB. David Greene didn’t excite anybody with his signing. Drew Butler was a 2 star kicker (should be a 6 star punter.

Herschel Walker was the #1 running back and recruit in the entire nation. They didn’t have all the recruiting rules back then and coaches would literally camp out in Wrightsville. Posting this article LONG before the day is up and claiming its results are final is incredibly poor judgement. Yeah, I shouldn’t be terribly surprised, considering the source, but it’s shocking that a writer could be so idiotic. I mean, Schultz hasn’t even written about recruiting rankings (yet) today, and that’s saying something.

Also, I always thought the guys at Rivals were kinda dumb. Not because of this article, mind you. I’ve just always read whatever they have to say with a grain of salt because most of it turns out to be dead wrong.

Anyway, I think this whole process has gotten out of hand anyway. These kids haven’t done jack, and these sports sites wanna put ‘em up on a pedestal as the saviors of American Sports. That’s why I put more stock in the “What’d These Classes Actually Do in College” rankings (or whatever they’re called).

For that reason, I don’t put much stock in recruiting rankings. How these kids played in high school and how they’ll play in college is up to one key factor: coaching, which UGA has in spades (I don’t care what anyone says).

That’s why I picking UGA to win the SECCG this year or, at the very least, the SEC East title. Bank on it.

I have never taken much stock into the recruiting rankings. I mean look at FSU and Auburn. They both have had great class rankings over the past few years, and we see how that has translated into wins. I love that our class is solid along both lines and linebackers. That is where games are won. The D-line class we have is probably one of the best in the nation along with the kids Florida got. Sure we don’t have the flashy skills players who usually come with the big star rankings, but then again we are young at all our skill positions so we really did not need to sign that many this year.

I’ve seen the term “Disney Dawgs” referred to UGA fans like myself who feel that CMR is a great coach and has a great track record with 6 top ten finishes and a #2 and #3 ranking. We were disappointed in the 8-5 season but feel that you don’t get rid of a top tier coach after 1 subpar year. Heck, even Bear Bryant had back to back 6-5 years and then went on to win 3 national championship.

I think we need to come up with a term for those calling for UGA to fire Richt who has got the fourth best winning percentage of active coaches and who has 10 years in building recruiting relationship with HS coaches and replace him with someone who is an unproven Head coach with a resume not half as good a CMR’S

I think we should call these people “Dumba$$ Dawgs”. A name that truly fits their IQ and Social status…

The primary reason that both Georgia and Georgia Tech are down in the rankings is the size of their recruiting classes. If you take the top 50 teams listed on the Rivals.com web site and rank them based on the “Average Star Rating”, UGA comes in at #9, while the Yellow Jackets are at #25. Although UT has a lower “star rating” than the Dogs, their recruiting class is composed of 26 people, versus 18 for Georgia. As a matter of fact, Florida, Alabama, LSU, and Tennessee are ALL expected to sign 26 athletes today … and Auburn is expecting to sign 30! In terms of total points, it would be very difficult for a school with 18 scholarship openings to compete with that.

The dawgs went cheap and didn’t offer Kirby Smart what he wanted ($1.5 mil), and ended up hiring their 5th choice, grantham at $750,000 and are paying for it in lackluster recruiting. They should have canned bobo, who is worthless and hired Smart and they would have gotten a lot better talent to uga.

The AJC strikes again, Bradley taking shots at the UGA class, while Schultz props up the GT class!! I think we will soar next year, when we sign a full 25 prospects and kids get a chance to see our new defense and our offense where Murray takes over with 10 returning starters. This class contains 4 defensive players that will see a good amount of PT this fall-Thornton, Smith, Hamilton and Alec Olgetree. On offense, this class was light on kids from that side of the ball so I would be suprised if any see the field, except Zander Olgetree on special teams-that kid will be a suprise.

I think next recruiting class you will see more of a balanced class but for this year, we needed to go defense heavy and considering we changed coordinators, we only lost 3 kids, all three being out of state prospects.

One final note, the way recruiting services RANK schools is based more on the number of players in the class than anything. Meaning, UGA is signing 18-19 kids today, UF, Bama, AU, FSU, and others are signing at least 25, some more than that I guess because some will not qualify. So, you have to take the rankings with a grain of salt.

UGa, like all other UGa-level teams in the SEC (AU, SC, Ark, Tn) is going to have to overachieve to the max in order to have a chance to stay in games with Fl and Bama. Those two teams simply have superior athletes across the board. Not necessarily at every position, but at 8-of-11 of the positions on both sides of the ball. Fl, like Texas, and to a lesser extent Bama, simply dominates in recruiting and this will not change in the near future. So get used to it and play hard and do the best you can.

If I am not mistaken, the Rivals list tallies points which helps schools with larger classes. If you lok at average stars, UGA finishes at number 9 and GT finishes at 25. This looks more at the overall quality of the recruits than the total amount. USC, by far, had the most outstanding class in terms of the quality. With just 16 recruits, they still posted at 5th overall.

At any rate, I think UGA and GT were very successful this year. Picking up Loius Young really bolstered Tech’s class and speaks volumes about for Al Groh.

Look at Tailbacks out of Fla, they haven’t produced a first round Tailback since Fred Taylor! Future tailbacks you might want to use youtube in the future and look up guys like Herschel Walker, Terrell Davis, Robert Edwards, Rodney Hampton, LarsTate, Tim Worley, Garrison Hearst, Musa Smith,Kregg Lumpkin, Danny Ware,Thomas Brown, Patrick Pass, and yes Knowshon Moreno. I think it’s a blessing, and not really a blessing in disguise. We need guys who have their attitude right, who are hard workers, who make grades and play the game smart. Many times these are the 3 and 4 star guys who have a little less ability but make up for it with heart. A lot of the 5 star guys have the talent, but maybe the big ego to go along with it. It’s a positive step. Having the right coaches in place and the right kids is more important than recruiting rankings. We finally are getting it. Most Dawgfans are pleased.

No gagator- the point was not to simply name coaches that you’ve heard of. I believe you were asked to have something to back up you candidates. Saban and Meyer I would agree with, they coach in the same league and have 2 titles each since Richt has been at UGA. Miles took a 2 loss LSU team to the NC 1 year after a 2 loss UGA team had to play in the Sugar Bowl. Both were SEC champs. In RIchts 2nd year they were a 1 loss SEC champ and again played in the Sugar Bowl. In the last 5 years a 1 loss SEC champ plays for the NC.

Playing for the NC has just as much with you do as much as what everybody else does. Timing is important.

“These coaches are better than Richt: Meyer, Saban, Miles, Dooley(reruiting anyway), Auburns coach “C”, Mullins (Miss State) Petrineo, and Hustson Nutt. Will that DO?”

Meyer and Saban I can give you (not saying I’d want either in Athens, mind you, but they’re damn good coaches, even if they’re space cases and egomaniacs), but the rest? Miles only got a MNC because they didn’t have to play the UGA team that was CLEARLY playing the best football in the nation that year. And have you seen his inability to manage a clock? Poor clock management skills do not a good coach make. Les Miles was a flash in the pan and will be fired after this year.

Dooley hasn’t even coached an SEC game yet, so he’s outta the running. Chizik’s Auburn team LOST to UGA last year and barely beat NORTHWESTERN in their bowl game. Dan Mullin has yet to do anything of consequence on his own. Petrino could have a good year this year, but he’ll have to do it despite a loss to UGA in Athens. And Houston Nutt … really? Last I heard, Houston Nutt hadn’t even beaten Richt. EVER.

Hell, after Miles on your list, none of those guys even has an SEC Title (titles gained while an assistant don’t count: otherwise Richt would have 3 or 4 ACC titles and a National Championship to his credit).

So you have two coaches that are “better” than Richt. What else ya got?

Maybe, the UGA fans are responsible for the ranking of this recruiting class. During several home games, with recruits in the stands, the BOO Birds were out in full force. Notably, Kentucky and early in the Auburn game the BOO Birds were more evident than UGA Fans. The UGA BOO Birds will say they did not boo the players, they were booing the coaches. You think the recruits knew that? Even if they did, do you think they wanted to play for Fans that boo their coaches?

So don’t balme CMR without sharing in some of the problem. Maybe next year, the Boo Birds will stay away and not influence the recruits.

I believe we all put too much into the recruiting of the power of high school kids (me included). What counts is how the recruits develop under their coaches and what they do on the field for their respective schools. Yes, on paper the UF class looks good, but that means absolutely nothing if they get kicked off the team or do not proces in 2 years. If the coaches fill their needs with quality kids who will help advance the program, the star ranking means nothing. That goes for all programs.
Good luck to all teams in the SEC next season. It will be interesting.

Dawgs will miss Da’Rick if he is as good as advertised – primarily because he is going to play for the ENEMY – flea ridden Tick Hounds. They may miss Robey – though he is a runt on today’s market (5″7″ 155 lbs.) They won’t miss the guys that went to Louisville and now have extra scholarships to offer to someone that may actually play in the future. The way I see it they got most of the needs for their defense and will have most of their offense coming back next season. This was a great class for safeties – which was one of their greatest needs and it was a great class for DE’s and DT’s, another need. They missed on Jeff Luck – probably the biggest unmet need but they have good LB’s returning and their are set at CB though they could use some more depth there. The OL will be good and the RB’s will be above average and WR and TE are also excellent. What I am saying is that in ‘10 they will be a SEC east winner if (a big if) the QB cuts down on last years turnovers and is steady and IF they convert smoothly to the new defensive scheme. UGA is ranked 15th, or whatever, not because a lack of quality, but because of the numbers – all ranked above them have at least 25 commits but UGA only has 19. That said the day is not over yet and they have scholarships to offer. To bad they weren’t willing to submit to the Nance’s threat of turning Da’Rick if their son was not given at scholarship at UGA. I think Da’Rick, like Berry before him, will regret going to a team in turmoil and lacking in talent. Berry played on a team that had a LOSING record during the 3 years he was there and Da’Rick better get ready for the same.

One recruiting class does not a team make. This class will have little or no impact on next year. — which is usual. Teams that play a lot of freshmen are in trouble. Recruiting is about meeting needs, not getting national acclaim. Dawgs have plenty of talent already. Get a quarterback (Murray or Mettenberger will pan out. CMR knows how to develop quarterbacks) and fix the defense and this team will be dangerous. Look at who Georgia has signed. This is still turning out to be a good class. Georgia’s primary weakness the last few years has been defense. That’s being fixed. Blab all you want but the days of picking apart CWM’s soft defenses are over.

I’ve read that the year after winning a national title is when you really reap the recruiting rewards so I’m hoping we rack em up in 2011 and get back to the top class or at least a top 2 class. We’ve had back to back no. 1 classes and slipped this year to no. 4 and no. 5 in the 2 services but still pretty decent I guess. I guess we’ll know 3-5 years from now.

only to comment on the obvious ajc bias towards tech. if we finish in the teens in the recruiting ratings, that is a disasterous trend for us; the foreseeing of hitting the bottom. if tech finishes 45 or so, that is a good sign things are going right, and ajc js and mb report that and hype it. to where would tech commits go? uga didn’t recruit them anyway. flip? to where? samford? ga southern? ajc is so blatantly biased.

This is a shameful article. Why continuously muckrake UGA and Richt? You seem to be intent on hurting this program as much as possible. At the top of your next column, you should issue a captioned apology for not reporting all of the facts. Report that this class is not comprised of 27-29 signees and should not be measured on an overall point system against teams with 28 signees that have an average of a 3.2 star rating. Whoooooo!!! We loaded up on a bunch of 2 and 3 stars!!! Whooooooo!! UGA has a quality class that has a higher star average than all but Florida and Alabama in conference. Report that cheeseball.

You and Jeff Schultz don’t have just a wee bit of dislike for the Dawgs and a lot of love for Tech do you? At least be a little more subtle about it. Look at the current headlines “Most unusual to not see Ga in recruiting top 10″ and “Tech will be just fine with their recruiting class”. Wow this smart a$$$ headline thing is easy.

Tired of this negative attitude from ajc. I understand it from some of the fans because we would like to get every 5 star athlete available. The truth is that this is a very strong class on the defensive side of the ball and that’s exactly what we needed. Nobody should expect us to set the recruiting world on fire with the year we had but there is no way this thing fell apart. Defense isn’t sexy but it wins and another 5 star wide receiver wouldn’t have helped us that much.

Yes, every UGA fan wants the recruiting class to be in the Top 10 every year and that does tend to lead to more wins. HOWEVER, look at the average rating per recruit UGA signed? There are a lot of schools currently ranked ahead of them that are ahead merely on volume of recruits. If you look at ESPN.com, UGA is still in the Top 10 and that was BEFORE Thornton signed. Of course, mentioning ESPN would put a damper on Mark’s alleged story here.

It would take Auburn people to think that that puke looking pimp-mobile is a classy ride.

Class rankings are based on player rankings–if only those player rankings were trustworthy then I would worry about a drop.

I remember last year a reporter asking CMR about a particular player’s time in the 40. He answered, “He’s fast enough.” The Coaching/recruiter staff and seen what they were looking for and did not base their offer on a couple of timed sprints but rather on what they had seen in games and game film–his overall ability.

So this class going to be Good Enough. It is mostly about defense this time and I can’t wait to see what our new defensive coaches with their new defensive attutude can do with this very talented bunch of guys.

BTW, if the rumors are true that Rogers went to TN because they gave his underqualified buddy a full ride, (as in a package deal,) I wonder how much time the NCAA will have him sitting on the sideline. And how many scholarships it will cost the program (as this is not the only question I have heard raised about their process) TN still has to answer for any violations that may have happened under Kiffen and staff.

The decommit marked a horrible week for the Georgia coaching staff, which not only lost Green, but also watched prized recruit Da’Rick Rogers decommit for hated Tennessee — Dawgs’ fans thought it was bad when Lane Kiffin was at the Helm — and wavering DB Nickell Robey of Frostproof looks like he might be headed to Southern Cal.

The mass exodus leaves the Bulldogs at 17 commitments and several holes to fill one day before National Signing Day. The recent events led AJC recruiting writer Chip Towers to say, “I can’t remember when I saw Georgia finish this poorly in the recruiting season. This may be the worst ever.”

UGA must recruit nationally to get better. I see only 3 states where there recruits have come from THIS YEAR and that is GA, SC, and FL.

Florida, Texas, BAMA, and Auburn have recruited nationally.

BAMA has committs from the following states: AL, GA, TX, SC, NC, TN, MD, VA, and Miss.

Auburn from AL, KS, SC, GA, CA, MO, MS, AR, TX, FL, and LA

It will be hard to stay in the surrounding states and have a top flight class unless you pull most of the top players from Georgia.

Da’Rick Rogers: Derek Dooley, UT campus why he went with Vols
11:32 am February 3, 2010, by Chip Towers

Calhoun wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers indicated he did not toil greatly over the recruiting decision he had to make Wednesday. In fact, he said, it was fun.

After being committed to Georgia for eight months, the AJC’s No. 1 player signed with Tennessee on Wednesday.

“Other than going through that crazy stuff at the end, I thought it was fun,” Rogers told reporters at his signing ceremony Wednesday morning in Calhoun. “Recruiting is one of the funnest things you can go through as an athlete.”

Rogers was firmly committed to Georgia until Tennessee, under new coach Derek Dooley, convinced him three weeks ago to take an official visit there. That, he said, he when he decided to pull the switcheroo.

“Really when I went up there [on Jan. 22],” Rogers said. “I just fell in love campus lifestyle. The coaches are just like the Georgia coaches. They’re great guys and it’s an amazing program.”

Rogers said new coach Derek Dooley was the main reason he decided to go to the Vols. He wasn’t sure he would have if Lane Kiffin had remained there as head coach.

“Before Dooley, not so interested. After Dooley, a lot interested,” Rogers said. “So it was a big thing for me.”

What specifically did he like about the coaching staff?

“I fell in love with their NFL style of coaching,” he said. “Coach Dooley talked about building a brand and I liked that.”

Rogers’ position coach at UT, Charlie Baggett, coached Randy Moss and Cris Carter, among others, in the NFL.

Great Recruiting Year = National Championship?

February 3rd, 2010
1:28 pm

Ok, so what is Bradley saying here:

Great recruiting year = National Championship?

Let’s test that theory.

USC—13 top 100 recruits—7-6 record
Notre Dame– loaded with top 100 recruits year after year–6-7 record

If a top recruiting year yields a 6-7 or 7-6 record or Richt’s average of 10 wins a year, which would Georgia fans prefer?

Saint Augustine….I’ll bet you right now that Florida loses to Georgia next year by at least ten points and Tennessee gets beat in Athens by 17. I don’t care how high up your recruting class is….the players you now have on campus and are expected to step in and play next year have no experience…none. I’ve seen most the recruits you signed this year and the majority of them are thugs. They’ll be in trouble with the law soon…its gonna happen. How Florida gets them in school is a miracle. At least half wouldn’t even meet minimum requirements at other SEC schools. So keep pointing fingers and patting yourself on the back the fall from the top is gonnna be hard. I can’t wait for Urban Cryer to start making excuses…and hopefully cry again on TV.As far as Tennessee is concerned..Dooley needed to have a good recruiting year. The cupboard is bare in Knoxville. They’ll be lucky to win 4-5 games next season. Its easy to recruit when you can promise athletes immediate playing time. That wasn’t gonna happpen with Rogers. He was gonna have to sit and wait his turn. His buddy Nance will be running the scout team the next four years while Da’Rick is getting a mouth full of helmets each game he plays in. The Vols have ablsolutely no one capable of getting the ball to him…its gonna be a long year in Knoxville. I’d look for either S. Carolina or Georgia to win the East this season. If S. Caroilna can find a QB they’ll be tough and Georgia has ten on offense coming back with the number two rated QB

I don’t think it should come as much of a surprise that we ended up with a recruiting class less stellar than normal: We had a down season on the field and coaching turnover off it. We still got some solid recruits, and next year we’ll have a chance to generate some of the right kind of momentum with the new DC.

I guess Marcus Lattamore had to figure out where it would be best for him not to lose to UGA. He got to pick between Auburn (four straight losses) or South Carolina (three out of the last four losses). Percentage wise it was best for him to stay in state. Hey, that matches South Carolina’s last eight games over the past two seasons (seven of eight losses) not counting the bowl games. If you want to count those it’s nine out of ten losses. Of course hope springs eternal in Columbia in the spring. Reality sets in in December.

For all of the hype that goes on now. I still have not seen a freshmen since that had the impact that Hershel Walker had on his team and College Football. Hershel with some help from an underrated defense won the 1980 NC inspite of Vince Dooley and his unwillingness to incorporate a passing game. That team would have only won 7 or 8 games without Hershel and he beat Notre Dame all by himself (Hershel 150 yards – Dawgs total offense 123 yards. So gaining or losing a recruit isn’t all that important.

So why hasnt he been able to compete on a national level after reloading so often? Recruits see that this guy is leading know where are will continue to avoid Georgia. Its time to rebuild now with a better coach, perhaps we could lure Strong here as the head coach.

Rankings in recruiting is the same as the first poll in the fall. worthless. Now, everybody here knows that if the alum don’t give the Vols players what they want, they will rob for it. Dooley is better that that joke that went to USC. At least Dooley knows how to keep his mouth shut. MB and his fellow writers need to talk about someone, let them run Georgia down. It takes the heat off the other schools in the SEC who need to hide their common crooks. Everybody knows that no matter what we do in the SEC, Ohio State or USC or Texas will be ahead of us in the media polls because they don’t have anybody else to compete with in their conferences. Its the same in recruiting, we are all about the same because everybody wants to play in the SEC and no one school can do like Alabame use to do. Sign everybody who might play against them. Looking at this right now, I’m pretty happy with it because it looks like they’ve addressed some major needs; defensive backfield, D-linemen and O-linemen, plus picked up a RB, QB & a 6-6 WR. Who cares about national rankings? What’s it done for us the last few seasons finishing in the Top 10 every year in that stat? If you can take kids who are smart, stay out of trouble and are willing to listen to their coaches and willing to learn, they will work out probably better than some of these 4 & 5 star guys. At least we got the coaching now with Grantham and the secondary coach replacing Martinez and Fabris and Jancek also. Lot of talent just had idiots coaching the position coaches. You have to have coaching. UGA has a LOT of good linebackers and Jancek had done a horrible job coaching them up. In the ‘08 and ‘09 recruiting classes, UGA signed Nick Williams, Christian Robinson, Akeem Hebron, Marcus Dowtin, and Michael Gilliard. FIVE 4 star recruits. NONE of them have done anything so far. We’ve got the talent, and now that Jancek the Joker is FINALLY gone, and Grantham is coaching LB’s, they should be a lot better and know how to tackle.

Actually, Mark, if you break it down by position there’s some good news and some not so good. The not so good- they were unranked in every offensive position except O- line,24th. They were unranked at linebacker, where they will need more bodies and better play in the 3-4. The good- they were ranked in the top five in 2 critical defensive positions where they need the most help, defensive end and defensive backs. D tackle was 12th with two 4 star kids(thank you Mike Thornton). I wonder if this reflects their concentrating on obvious needs or poor recruiting by the offensive staff or both. It is pretty bad when the defensive staff with only one guy for two critical months out performs the O-staff so completely. Maybe worth a future blog topic?

The low ranking class actually is good news. It dispells the claim that UGA gets the top recruits and then does nothing with them. Now, if UGA wins a game it will be an upset and it will be considered great coaching by Richt. Of course, with Florida’s top-ranked class, we may need to forget going to Jacksonville because Urban can recruit and coach.

I am afraid that all the hope of catching the Gators with Tebow gone may be out the window now.

Off and on topic here, John Chavis’ last year at Tennessee produced a nationally ranked Top 10 defense. While the Volunteers struggled to a 5-7 season, Chavis did his job. Last year, highy touted and respected Monte Kiffin’s defense ranked about 22nd or so overall nationally in a 7-6 season. Tennessee gave up about 5 passing TD’s for the year in 2009. That stands out as pretty darn good but Rogan and Berry have left for the Big Show. We’ll see if they grabbed a freshman that can step in and give them some time back there and some guys that can pressure the QB in 2010. Enough of this recuiting talk for a while. I await the final tally from the day and will chat later. Ya’ll have fun…

This looks like a darn good class to me. Check out the 40 yard speeds: all under 5, except for a couple linemen. Good solid 4 stars. Rashad Jones was a 5 star, and I would have paid him to leave. I watch Boykin, green, Rambo, and think, man, we outa be whipping some butts, but no, we fall apart at thre first sign of adversity. We looked like a junior college team last years as far as the team concept goes. Richt has the team going steadily downward for several years. I’ve got a glimmer of hope left, but basically, I don’t think he’s up to the challenge of a NC. Wish I didn’t feel that way.

You guys who think UGA is going to have a 5 loss or worse season are really delusional. Several reasons we’ll be better, at least record-wise.
1. Fired Willie Martinez, Jancek, and Fabris. It’s addition by subtraction.
2. Aaron Murray, highly-touted qb (over 50 offers) replaces Joe Cox. Again, it’s addition by subtraction.
3. Easier schedule. Instead of playing Oklahoma State we play Lousiana-Lafayette. We don’t play Alabama or LSU.
4. Whole o-line is back and Chris Burnette and Austin Long are going to be really solid additions.
5. Our receivers and tight ends were all young last year, and they’re should be a lot of improvement there.

Now,now! Lets not get to hasy with our negativism. So what if UGA is an average SEC school in football. What difference does it really make everyday in the state of Georgia? It changes nothing regarding the lifestyle or personal worth of the people who are residents of this state. Alaska has never won a national championship in football and it may be a likely probability that they do not have a single college football team in the state. What’s more; they are intelligent enough not to care. UGA is good enough for Georgians. It is an excellent University whether it wins football championships …or not. But……………….just to remind those who are apt to endorse forgetfulness, this average collegiate football program has won 90 games in the past nine years. It will be worth the wait, but I am waiting for someone…..anyone to name another school who has surpassed that accomplishment. Please post your reply quickly as it’s easy for boredom set in. I will wait until Thursday for those who complain to produce their long lists. Please do not exceed 118 schools; suppossedly there are only 119 programs. Thanks for your rapid response to this. For really loyal Dawg fans, UGA is quite an accomplished university and football program. Do have a nice day and be sure to keep your remarks decent and civil. Toodles!

Tech’s Paul Johnson typically was a bit more blunt in assessing the worth of the recruting services: “None. Zero. Because it’s a joke. How can anybody look and even come across to say these are the top 100 players in the country. They don’t have a clue. Like they’ve looked at every high school running back and they’re going to be able rank this guy as a 4, and this guy as a 5. And if you’ll notice, the teams that have the biggest subscriptions [among fans], their guys are always the 4- and 5-star athletes. That’s the way it is.”

Not a bad class of recruits. Logic is that we could lose some guys that were weak commits with the coaching change, but I will feel much better with CTG on the sidelines this year and believe we will see immediate results in the quality of the defensive play. Richt already has the ship righted.
On another note, winds around rocky top are that there has been a pretty bad drug problem in the ad, evidenced by the arrests and dismissals in bb and fb programs. I would expect Dooley to straighten that out if it is true, but lets hope Darick stays clean, otherwise he could be wearing a little more orange than he bargained for.

Saint Augustine,

1. Because they can’t be any worse with the athletes they have.
2. Murray was wanted by many top schools, so I think I have reason to be optimistic. Plus, we also have Zach Mettenberger, who’s 6′5 and was a top 10 qb.
3. That’s not the point. I’ll admit, we blew up in the big games, the last couple of years, but with no Alabama or LSU on the schedule, have could the record not be better?
4. Yes, you’re right about that, but we had some great blocking the last 4 games, and it showed in the rushing yards.

Tech will not beat the Dawgs…it won’t be close..and the Tennessee game will be over with by the middle of the second quarter…believe me. Whose gonna be your QB Tennessee? You lost half your team to graduation and the other half are doing time for robbery. Georgias WR’S are gonna have a field day catching Murray’s passes and our returning RB’s are going to slice up your defensive front. Tech will win six games this year and finish either fourth or fifth in the ACC. Tennessee will hold off Vandy for last place in the East and will win five games. Believe me its going to happen. The overall talent level at Tech and Tennesse just isn’t there. The Georgia ship gets righted this season and the Dawgs will be playing in the SEC championship game…..just because we lost Da’Rick to the hounds doesn’t mean the program is going to fold up. Tech would beg to have a 8-5 season like Georgia did this past year. And Tennessee is hoping for the same this year. Georgia will finish 13-1. With the loss coming to either Auburn or Alabama in the SECCG. First and you better believe it, quality counts. The Gators are #1 in all 3 rating services. Georgia is 9th on ESPN, 16th on Rivals.com and 20th on Scouts.com.

Let’s use the ESPN rating since they rate Georgia the highest. Georgia highest rated
players in the 150 ESPN recruits are rated #28 and #84.

Now compare those two with the Gator recruits in the ESPN 150. Florida players are rated
1,3,9,10,25,28,34,35,37,41,50,79 and 81. You have to be a complete idiot to think your 2 can play against our 13. JUST REMEMBER QUALITY RISES TO THE TOP.

Ga is falling behind in jobs, state income, education, and now college football. What is going on. One college scout ranked Ga behind Cali, Fla, & Tx as far as producing football players. So how come we lose recruits to other states. Tenn, Aub, FSU haven’t been worth a crap the past few yrs, but once again we lose top players to those schools. I understand why we lose players to UF, USC, or Bama. Has anyone noticed how proud Fla, Tx, USC, Miami,LSU and FSU fans are of their program no matter how they finish, they bred their players to attend their programs. I lived in Tx, every good player in Tx wanted to go to Tx, except for a few that wanted to go to OKlahoma. Same for UF,USC,FSU,LSU,&Bama. Miami has been in the dog house, but their high school players still wanted to attend there, that’s because they have state pride. Like when UF play UGA fans in Fla pull for UF even if they don’t like UF, but it’s not about football, it’s about da state of Fla vs da state of Ga

We’ll see how these players all develop, not to put too much on the “rankings” of classes (services are notoriously bad/wrong about ranking players so the data for class rankings is already suspect) but to play the game a bit, looking at the UGA players signed, something interesting stands out.

Of the players choosing to play at UGA, here are the number who turned down OFFERS from the following schools (all of which the bloggers here are whooping and crowing over):

Florida – 5
Alabama – 6

All the harping about a player that UGA didn’t “get” who chose another school needs to be put in perspective. UGA SIGNED players those schools wanted as well.

Example. The kid who went to FSU at the last minute. Fine. UGA signed 3 players that FSU wanted.

So, all in all, the blogging is fun for all but, considering the size of this class, looking at these players on an individual basis, I think UGA is in good shape. [Though, I do think, not yet analyzed -- the lack of certainty at QB, which Richt courted with his poor management of the position last year -- could have affected WR choices for these players -- somebody has to throw them the ball.]

2001 doesn’t count Mark Bradley. Coach Richt you recall was hired by Vincent J. Dooley 2 am 20 December 2000. He didn’t even want to come here February 1st. It was Vince Dooley who had to tell Coach Richt to get his butt here. Am I the only person with any kind of memory writing at the AJ-C ?

It’s the same exact situation the way Coach Richt let Todd Grantham dilly dally around in Dallas for a week after he hired him, although the very next day, Dallas lost. Right at Recruiting time.

We had Jakar Hamilton be our mouth, I mean spokesman during that week, if you recall.

Scout.com has UGA ranked the Number 21 Recruiting Class in the nation.

We had exactly 6 percent of our 85 scholarships recruited last year on offense.

We have now exactly 8 percent of our 85 scholarships recruited this year on offense.

If you knew anything about football Mark Bradley, and you do NOT, you would do a better job of actually evaluating this class of 5 top-notch defensive players and 0 on offense.

And, instead of concluding that Coach Richt needs white limos like Auburn, you would then conclude that Coach Richt needs an 11-year NFL veteran as Offensive Coordinator at $750,000 a year so we do not lead the nation on offense yet again in lining up unprepared especially at QB every year again this year and getting penalties, or when we don’t fumble or throw an interception.

You can’t be that stupid can you Mark Bradley ? You can’t see what the recruits on Offense are telling UGA Mark Bradley ?

Tell me it’s not so.
