What, if anything, would losing Da’Rick Rogers mean to UGA?

Da'Rick Rogers: If he goes to Tennessee, is Signing Day sunny for Georgia? (AJC photo by Jason Getz)

Da'Rick Rogers: If he's a Vol, is Signing Day sunny for Georgia? (AJC photo by Jason Getz)

Vince Dooley, who knew a thing or two about recruiting and about winning, said of the former: “It’s the way you win in the offseason.” And if that’s the case, would Da’Rick Rogers’ apparent defection to Tennessee — esteemed colleague Chip Towers has the breaking news — constitute a loss? A 45-19 sort of loss?

On the one hand, you can’t lose what you never actually had. On the other, Rogers is considered the best player in the state and is rated No. 9 nationally by Rivals.com. He’d committed to Georgia last summer. Bulldog fans — and Bulldog coaches — had been counting on him for a while. But now it appears he’ll be a Vol instead, and if that’s the case he’ll have spurned a program that has won 90 games in nine seasons for one that changed coaches last month.

I’m headed to Athens for tomorrow’s Signing Day doings, but on SD Eve I wanted to ask you folks: If Rogers does wind up signing with Tennessee — he’s scheduled to make his announcement at 9:45 a.m. at Calhoun High — does that take the fizz off Georgia’s recruiting class? Is this a loss? A Big Loss? Or is it no loss at all?

And with that, the floor is open for what I know will be our usual erudite discussion. Thanks in advance.

Update: Rogers indeed signed with the Vols on Wednesday.

UGA/UT Grad, thanks for your polite approach. But Brown was a good player from a private school in Tenn. Da’Rick, from a public school in Georgia. Huge difference there.

Private,

Go choke on some wine & cheese you elitist prick. Don’t like it…post on the ACLU website or report my comment….make my freaking day. If you are offended, then I’ve done my job.

Something tells me we’ll get the last laugh and I hope he’s harrassed for the rest of his life about this. Better just start looking for a permanent home in Tennessee if I were him.

So long toots

Mark, Your assessment of Tim Tebow leaves me wondering, I thought college was suppose to prepare young adults for the real world. He will not be a starting QB in the NFL. So he was extremely successful as a college athlete, did that prepare him to excel at the next level, NO! Don’t get me wrong he’s probably a great humanitarian but on the field he’s reached his full potential.

Being a retired teacher, it tells me something when his HS head coach says, “He wasn’t in school again today”. School is not important to this kid.

A majority of these kids are overrated. Let’s visit this subject two year from now when Nash and Rogers transfer to another school. Is Rogers skills on the same level as AJ Green? Nope!!! Rogers will not start his freshman year.

I am rolling on the ground, laughing at the UGA fans! Just like UT took Eric Berry away, we do so again with Mr. Rogers.

I think the final blow might have been the comments posted on Da’Rick’s facebook page by you oh-so-classy UGA fans. I will enjoy watching Da’Rick score on the Dawgs for the next few years before he gets taken in the 1st round of the NFL draft.

As for Nance, there was another 2* QB coming out of high school that UT’s OC (Chaney) enjoyed coaching. His name was/is DREW BREES!

People seem to forget that UT lost at least seven prime recruits when Kiffin left. If Dooley can coach UT is on the way up.

Go Vols.

Obviously we wanted him, perhaps badly.. It is important that we sign our fair share of the quality kids in GA, and I don’t think we have quite the grip on that we used to have. I look for Richt and company to step that up in the future years. Even with this event, we still have a very good class and I look forward with great anticipation to beginning next year with a defense.

I won’t go into the head problems of this kid although it does appear he has enough for several folks.

In regard to is this a statement about UGA, I remember when I was 17 to 18 and I hope none of my decisions were taken as a statement on anything at all.

It hurts more pride than anything. Remember this time last year when Marlon Brown was very highly touted, number 2 wr on some boards I believe. But Rontavius Wooten got more playing time. Never can tell with these guys, what sucks about it is how long he was committed and then letting the coaches know so late that they may not have time to sign another WR to take his spot. Hope they have a good day tom with a couple of surprises.

If I was a Dawg fan I would be more concerned about Lattimore going to USC than Rogers going to UT. UGA does not need anymore WR types. They need offensive linemen. The only way to keep Lattimore off the field is have the UGA offense run the ball.

All fall in recruiting blogs the UGA people considered Rogers the Second Coming. Now they are trashing him. That is called being intellectually handicapped.

Personally, I’m against any discussion that has anything to do with eruditing. If you’re looking for biased, uninformed and oftentimes irrelevant opinion, I’m as good as the next dawg fan. Lewis Grizzard (God rest his soul) didn’t need erudite discussion because there is no place for it in college football. Give me blind passion and a Gator fan to insult. As for any of these recruits, if they don’t want to come to the best state university in the US of A, it is their loss.

Bradley, yes everbody who lives in Calhoun. He was kicked out of the Darlington school for cussing at teachers among other things. And we all thought he was a prima donna when he has gotten a slew of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties the last two years. He had two in the Dalton game this year for showboating and being a d**k. I know because I was there and saw it for myself. Does that answer you’re question?

Dog Town USA, you never know what a player will do in the NFL. I am old enough to remember a guy named Steve Spurrier who was a great college player and never really made it in the NFL. I think if UGA fans are honest, they will admit he turned out ok after the NFL. Hershel is another who came to mind, great college player, but never was the star in the NFL that he was in college. Point is, who knows how they will turn out. Ryan Leaf certainly was a bust.

THE ONLY CLASSLESS PEOPLE HERE ARE ROGERS AND ROBEY. WHY DO YOU STRING ALONG COACHS FOR MONTHS AND MONTHS AND THEM CHANGE YOUR MIND. THOSE COACHS PUT IN ALOT OF TIME AND EFFORT IN THESE KIDS. WHEN THEY DRAG ALONG THE PROCESS, THEY ARE MESSING WITH THE COACHS, THE TEAM, AND OTHER RECRUITS. FOR EXAMPLE, RICHT MAY HAVE PROMISED ROGERS THAT HE WOULD NOT PURSUE ANOTHER WR IF HE PROMISES TO SIGN WITH UGA. OTHER KIDS MAY HAVE WANTED TO GO TO UGA BUT CHOSE SOMEWHERE ELSE CAUSE THEY TOUGHT ROGERS WAS GOING TO GEORGIA. COACHS MAY NOT HAVE GIVEN THE TIME TO OTHER RECRIUTS, CAUSE THEY BELIEVE IN PROMISES.

Too all Vol Fans. I and the majority of the UGA fans would not trade places with you for anything. I will take our coach and our players over what you have any day. A recruit or two does not erase the damage inflicted upon you by your hiring of Kiffin. Dooley might turn out to be a good SEC coach. But that is your problem.l He might. He is completly unproven at this level. Our coach has proven he can win at this level … yours hasn’t and you know it.

But I understand your need to be on this blog posting insults making wild projections about how good you are going to be and feeling so macho. The problem is that you know you don’t really belive it.

Not worried. Don’t know the kid, hope he makes the best decision for his future. As far as the Dawgs are concerned, we all knew the past year would cause some recruiting issues. We may struggle agin this year, but I still think our future is bright. I foresee a return to UGA nasty Dawg defense football. Forget the stars, get some nasty, motivated youngsters like our cross town rivals are picking up. Yes a compliment to GT. Buck up, boys. Get Dawg-nasty!

Chuck Uga

Mark,
Losing the kid to another team isn’t the issue here. It’s the COMPLETE AND TOTAL LACK OF CLASS he is displaying by not letting Mark Richt know a week ago that he was not coming to UGA (and he isn’t). This kid will not do well at the next level, and he’ll have a rough life if this is the way he treats people. Mark Richt is a very good man who deserves more respect than this kid is showing, and he should be listening to people who can help him in his life, not a maggot, egotistical carpet salesman like Mike Nance who truthfully fantasizes about something that will NEVER happen, that is his son throwing TD passes to Rogers on the same college team. Rogers is showing his true colors, and Mark, you can lay some money down in Vegas on this one…UGA will win the SEC LONG before Tennessee does so again. Derek Dooley versus Urban Meyer and Nick Saban annually?! Plus having to face a very PO’ed coach in Mark Richt? Going to be a long, hard three or four years in Knoxville for Mr. Rogers. Richt doesn’t usually take kids with this kind of character, so maybe it’s a blessing he’s decided to stab the UGA staff right square in the back. By the way, Derek Dooley will be gone from UT by the start of the 2016 season.

What kind of retarded article is this? Of course, this is a HUGE, painstaking loss for Richt’s regime. Let’s consider the following: Marlon Brown was benched his freshman year when many thought he was ready, Mike Bobo always runs on the first two downs, and, the fact of the matter is that Georgia has officially peeked with Mark Mediocre Richt

WR is by far the Deepest position at UGA currently. I’d rather stock up on defensive talent. A weaker skill position class from year to year is easier to overcome than problems on the line.

Dog Town USA, no comparison, Weurful was more like David Greene, same atheletic ability, good leaders, accomplished college QB’s, etc. You may or may not be right about Tebow, but some team will give him a shot. My experience is Kiper is rarely right on maybe players and only right on sure talents such as Stafford.

Judging from watching the UnderArmor game, he is below average and would not have started for UGA for at least 2 seasons if even then. UGA is loaded with Receiver talent for a couple of years. It is good his true character came out now. By the way, Nance should also be evaluating his commitment level as well. Offered by Vandy and committed to Vandy for all those months and then breaking his commitment as well. All of this comes back to hurt you later, but Mr. Dad Nance must be misguided as well.

UGA is stacked at WR. Losing Rogers wasn’t nearly as big as losing Robey. Rogers doesn’t like to go to class, so Knoxville was a natural fit. He can take his noodle-armed QB, and enjoy his coaching nightmare.

I agree with implementing a policy where, if you’re committed to UGA, and you keep shopping around, your commitment is pulled, and given to a player that actually cares about the team.
