What, if anything, would losing Da’Rick Rogers mean to UGA?

Da'Rick Rogers: If he goes to Tennessee, is Signing Day sunny for Georgia? (AJC photo by Jason Getz)

Da'Rick Rogers: If he's a Vol, is Signing Day sunny for Georgia? (AJC photo by Jason Getz)

Vince Dooley, who knew a thing or two about recruiting and about winning, said of the former: “It’s the way you win in the offseason.” And if that’s the case, would Da’Rick Rogers’ apparent defection to Tennessee — esteemed colleague Chip Towers has the breaking news — constitute a loss? A 45-19 sort of loss?

On the one hand, you can’t lose what you never actually had. On the other, Rogers is considered the best player in the state and is rated No. 9 nationally by Rivals.com. He’d committed to Georgia last summer. Bulldog fans — and Bulldog coaches — had been counting on him for a while. But now it appears he’ll be a Vol instead, and if that’s the case he’ll have spurned a program that has won 90 games in nine seasons for one that changed coaches last month.

I’m headed to Athens for tomorrow’s Signing Day doings, but on SD Eve I wanted to ask you folks: If Rogers does wind up signing with Tennessee — he’s scheduled to make his announcement at 9:45 a.m. at Calhoun High — does that take the fizz off Georgia’s recruiting class? Is this a loss? A Big Loss? Or is it no loss at all?

And with that, the floor is open for what I know will be our usual erudite discussion. Thanks in advance.

Update: Rogers indeed signed with the Vols on Wednesday.

Kudos, Michael. Now don’t de-commit on me. I’d hate to have to find another “first.”

What makes a great recruit is what is in a young man’s heart and what is between the ears! If Da’Rick was not 100 per cent Dawg..then the team has lost nothing!

he may be a really good player, but receivers are not what is hurting the program. get that defense and secondary in order and the offense will take care of itself with better qb play

He obviously got suckered in to saying he will get early playing time! He would more than likely get red shirted his first year because UGA is as deep as anybody at receiver. Not to say that DaRick is a bad player but his friend is up there and I am sure he will start as a freshman. Not a bad blow for Georgia but he would have been great there. Sucks for him though because Tennessee has No QB and no O-line!

Opposing high school coaches have said that UT can have him…doesn’t play with heart. Quits on plays not to him. Doesn’t finish plays..and a VERY good chance he doesn’t qualify.
It’s more of a loss of pride than production…

Ever heard the saying, re-arranging deck chairs on the titanic? Sounds like the UGA football program. They had almost reached upper tier status in the SEC, but now they are headed towards competing with SC and KY to stay above middle of the pack. First in SEC east is FL, second is TN, and third place is now up for grabs.

It irritates the hell out of me that he is changing his mind after being committed to UGA for so long. On what? A whim? Nonetheless, we have some unbelievable receivers at the moment, so I’m not worried about losing him. However, we all want to be the best, right? I was excited about UGA getting a top 10 recruiting class, even top 5 in some polls. Now we will surely drop significantly. So that sucks. All in all, I think we’ve got a great class – could’ve been better obviously – and I can’t wait for next season!! Go Dawgs!!

Gee. After reading the other comments, it sounds like UGA was lucky that he went elsewhere. Why did UGA recruit him in the first place ?
All I know is that the rules state that “Once a recruit rejects a grant-in-aid scholarship to UGA, he’s really worthless”

Recruiting is about the long run, not the short run. The number of stars beside a player can put stars in your eyes, but I’ve been watching this recruiting game for too long to put too much stock in it. David Pollack, David Greene, Tim Jennings, and Thomas Davis were all unheralded. I think they did O.K. Is it aggravating to be jilted at the last minute? Of course it is. Before we all sit around in sack cloth and ashes, look back at the last few classes. So many of the guys with the big stars really haven’t contributed that much. I think it all comes down to determination and discipline once you get on campus. The bottom line is the last few years we have lost because no one was helping our kids have a winning strategy defensively. Hopefully Grantham will start coaching some kids up, and we can return to prominence. I’m content. UT, GiT, and UF fans will all crow and rub salt in the wounds for spite, but none of that matters. Starting to play a violent, but smart brand of football is all that matters. Dawg fans, the biggest recruit this year could just be Coach Grantham. If he turns around our brand of defense this year, we may have them lining up next year.

He’s changing because of Nance’s father guys!!! Nance’s father was the point “broker” in getting the both of them into Calhoun after years in Rome. Nance’s father has brokered his son a scholarship on the grounds that he would get Rogers. Ask any coach that coached against Calhoun….the Nance kid will NEVER play a down at UT. Just doesn’t have the talent.

The Dawgs don’t want him if he doesn’t want to be a Dawg. The Vols have no QB and the Dawgs have two future NFL QBs in Mettenberger and Murray. Rogers could be costing himself some serious signing bonus money if he thinks Nance is going to be throwing to him.

UGA has it’s issues…

So does your grammar.

This is a big disappointment. I checked the Rivals rankings and noticed UGA had slipped to the teens, and saw that Rogers was changed to undecided. So there was still a little hope. Then I saw Towers’ story that he was going to sign with UT. That’s heartbreaking, man.

Mark,

I don’t consider this a loss at all. Da’rick refers to himself as “pretty boy”. We don’t need a ” Terrell Owens” or “Ochocinco” clone at UGA. WR is a position of strength at UGA with Green, Charles,King, Troupe, Wooten and Marlon Brown. Actually i tend to think that we sign too many wr’s and not enough lineman. Hopefully this opens up a spot for an overlooked player. Rember Richard Seymour was the last player signed in his class and he turned out to be a great DL. Tim Jennings was signed when another star OL signed with Ohio State and he turned into a very good CB for us. I remember Pollack was a 3 star FB who turned out to be the greatest DE in UGA history.

In addition, I hear that Da’rick might not make the grades anyway. So this could be a blessing in disguise for UGA

UT is not 2nd in the SEC Dont be a hater! I dont believe losing to UCLA two years in a row would call UT even Mid tier. Tennessee beating UGA this year was a HUGE upset. This whole DaRick Rogers thing is gonna be investigated!! There is something wrong with this picture!

I look forward to Signing day every year especially living in Indianapolis where football isn’t played on Saturdays only on Sundays and have no idea what recruiting is all about. I am very disappointed in this class. Not so much on losing one player but the fact that we have supposedly lost the best in state. I remember Richt saying and even Grantham saying this year at his press conference. You win the state of Georgia you have a chance to win National Championship. The amount of top players that have left the state is my concern. The flood gates have opened and showed that Richt is vulnable. NOW THAT IS THE PROBLEM

Even if he were to choose UGA I’d be concerned by his coach saying “I didn’t see him in school AGAIN today.”

It’s obvious UT is paying Nance’s college tuition only to get Rogers. Waste a scholly for a third string QB to get a 5 star recruit. Maybe he’s that good. Only time will tell if it will pay off for UT.

UT 2nd in the east. A month ago you losers couldn’t pluck Duke or Air Force’s coach and had to settle for a coach that went 4-8 last year in the WAC. Dooley or no Dooley. I wouldn’t send that order form for SEC champ. tickets in so fast. Odds are UGA trends upward with the new DC who will take accountability for the defense and UT slids a lot. Good thing UT doesn’t have to rely on fielding a team with Tennessee prep players. Sorry a** state with obese, loser fans.

It’s a loss of pride…not substance. It give opposing fans the ability to use phrases like “UGA’s on the downhill” and other dumb statement. In a month, no one will remember this.
I’m more concerned about the signing of linemen, both O and D, than I am skill positions. If there aren’t top notch blockers and stopper, we’ve got a bigger problem.

Also, i think UGA will be a running team for the next few years. Ealey is a beast and King is starting to live up to his potential. The road to the SEC Championship is thru a great running game and Greatt defense. Not by how many prima donna WR’s you have.

I would expect the NCAA to inspect Tenn., much harder than the Bryce Brown incident..Not gonna’ be good for calhoun high, because they’ve always recruited out of county players..Nance Carpet, will be toast!..Also expect a backlash from Dawg fans in Rome, as Mike Nance owns the Piggly Wiggly in Armuchee!..How did Da’Ricks mother land a job at Nance carpet?..How did Mike Nance become his legal guardian?..What about a new car?.Why was Da’Rick kicked out of Darlington?.How many official visits did Tenn. have in the Nance/Rogers home?..Counting the previous staff, about 10!..Good family-Some poor choices will disrupt their future.

45-19 is not a huge upset. It is a huge BEATDOWN. So how does it feel when the top player in your state picks an out of state rival? Can you say Marlon Brown? UGA fans are classless. If he went to UGA…all of you would have been singing his praises. Now…”he’s a bum and we’re better off!” You show your lack of class daily. THIS could be why he defected.

UGA’s loss is my son’s gain. My son is going to be the starting QB this season, but the UT coaches don’t know it yet. I will make Derek’s life miserable unless my son starts at QB. He’ll be throwing TD’s to Da’rick on Saturdays. If not, they’ll just transfer like they did in high school.

A lot can happen between now and gametime. Since his recruitment has been a 2 year process, I have the impression that he’s never been settled about it. His choice is really puzzling given the newness of the Vol coaching staff. I think UGA has some talented quarterbacks and that just brings more mystery. Time will tell. I’m like others in that I’m more happy with guys who are committed and thrilled to be in the program. But I would feel a lot more comfortable about things if could get some real bulldozer OL’s and big and fast DE’s right at the moment. I really want to see the Junkyard Dawgs again.

Bradley….I just got cut off, now I am back and will continue. Da Rick Rogers is most certainly a very talented young man, but as I said above, Why in the world is everybody all shook up about this young man ? Sure I would love to see him go deep for the DOGS, but it would seem he would rather play for UT. Congratulations to UT on a 5star pickup. The University Of Georgia is just fine at WR, Rogers would certainly have been icing on the cake, But what the heck. Me? I would rather save a few scholarships for a very deep recruting class next year. So in the big picture to me …..no big deal. I think 2010 is a great oportunity to show prospects that CMR and company are back in a big way from what was most certainly a down 2009 season……..To those who have taken the time to read my long winded post….make no mistake, writers like Mark Bradley make a living getting you all stirred up over the recruting process. We have the players already at UGA to win alot of games……..the key is to coach and motivate…….WE will be ok. GO DOGS !!!
