I’d been hearing it lately: “Ready to admit you were wrong about Favre?” And I admit I was almost – almost, I said — wavering. The man I’d described as the most overrated athlete of our time had had a brilliant regular season. I didn’t see that coming. I didn’t think he had anything left. And now he stood one game from a Super Bowl, and the thought of a two-week ESPN Favre-fest was enough to turn my stomach.
But I held out hope. Even when the Vikings had the ball in field-goal range, I keep saying to myself, “He can still mess this up.” Lo and behold, he did. Which is why Brett Favre is …
The most overrated athlete of our time.
The Vikings kicked the Saints all around the Superdome but neglected to win the game. Favre had much to do with that — a blown handoff on the goal line, a forced interception in the second half, an unbelievable INT inside the final 20 seconds of regulation in a tie game. Even after a splendid season, the Favre I know and loathe blew it at the end.
Naturally, the sycophants on ESPN declared Favre a man’s man for trying to Make A Play, but the first rule of NFL quarterbacking remains: Protect the Doggone Ball. But he couldn’t do it because he’s Brett Favre, the man’s man who never saw a dare he wouldn’t take.
(Oh, and if you’re interested in some intriguing variations on the ESPN Favre phenomenon, check out the roundly irreverant #ESPNFavreRulesforAll on Twitter. One submission: “That’s the thing about NBC executives. They aren’t afraid to yank Conan off the Tonight show. Gotta respect that.”)
So now I can rest easy, at least until Favre retires and unretires again. He’s done for this season. His last pass was a postseason interception, same as in January 2008. Being Brett Favre, he teared up in the postgame interview because he’s a man’s man who isn’t afraid to cry. Or wear Wrangler jeans. Or throw the ball to the other side.
Ready to admit I was wrong about Brett Favre? Look, I’ll admit I’ve been wrong about pretty much everything in my so-called life. But not about Brett Favre. Never about him.

Mark – I’m not sure that I would call Favre THE most overrated athlete of our time, but I have to agree with you on the sycophantic behavior of some of the pundits. On the broadcast tonight, Terry Bradshaw called him the greatest quarterback ever. Talk about hyperbole.
Favre wasn’t even the best quarterback playing today – that would be Archie’s eldest son – and putting Favre ahead of Montana, Elway, Aikman… is completely over the top.

YOU ARE CRAZY!!!! no way brett lost that game for them. He played a hell of a game, if we could have held on to the ball more we would have won. Also, why is a pass interference (for the saints) call made when the ball is about 10-15 feet over the guys head no chance he was going to catch it, or how did he make that one catch be called a catch when it hit the ground??? I think I smelled home cooking nothing brett could do about that. Please come back next year and whoop some ass like you did this year.

How can you put all this on Favre?
Adrian Peterson fumbled the ball 3 times, and the hand off incident wasn’t even Favre’s fault, it was Peterson’s.
If anything, Adrian Peterson is the most overrated running back.

I’m sorry but the most over rated athlete of our time is far from Brett Farve. I don’t know what they’re feeding you down in the ATL but it obviously isn’t helping you or your sports writing. If you look at the game as a whole, it really comes down to the whole team turning the ball over…over….and well over again. You can blame Farve all you want, but in the end he put them in a position to lengthen their lead many times in that game and the team coughed it up. Farve tried to make a play to save his team from themselves, its a shame he made the wrong choice. But whatever, you’re just a windbag.

Favre is not the sole player to blame for the Viking loss. There were too many dropped/fumbled balls, and poor interference mistakes that the secondary made. Favre did pass the ball for an interception seconds before overtime that will standout in many sports reporters eyes, however I doubt that the Vikings would have made it to the NFC Championship game w/o Favre. One commentator stated that Favre should have run the ball himself, but with a couple of Saints defenders in closing distance, that would have been a “make a wish” moment for the defense (hard hit and possible fumble there!). A poor choice for Favre, yes. But–
not the sole reason for the loss.

Mark Bradley you knew it i know something 2 your an idiot who must not of paid attention to the game tonight or the season as a whole. Please find a new job, maybe one that will fire you when you run your mouth without basis. Favre is one of the best QB’s of all time, he makes everyone who plays with him better, Minnesota had a bad day as a team and the loss was not because of int’s, it was part of the many number of mistakes. Brett kept getting them back into contention and they came up short. THATS THAT PLEASE FIND A NEW JOB, the first amendment is a great thing unless it has to do with reading your column

You are such a hater. Man already has a super bowl ring. It is obvious that he cares about his job, his sport and winning more than just about any other team sport athlete in America. He gets the sh*t kicked out of him, gets up grinning and asks for some more. Dude had an amazing season at the age of 40, kicked a** last week and threw for more than 300 yards in the NFC championship game. On the last play in regulation, if he doesnt make a play the Vikes are still out of FG range. There is a reason that people follow BF. The man has earned respect the hard way. Appreciate him for what he is. The sport will be poorer when he does hang them up. Articles like this are simply petty.

Mark,
Brett didn’t lose the game!! Brett didn’t play a great game, but he played a good game. Peterson fumbled the ball 3 times and you blame Brett?? I wish he had spent his whole career here in Atlanta and we could have had a lot to be excited about all these years. I hope he comes back and plays another year, like him or not, Brett is fun to watch play. Overrated?????? He owns every record there is to have and he is one tough SOB. He was playing in a game that most other QB’s would have sat out once he injured his ankle. Brett took the Vikings a long ways with a poor OL. Truth is if he had a better HC he would be playing in the Super Bowl this year. I really like most of your artlicles but this one is pretty much just STUPID!!

He may just be the most overrated of all time. Sure he has a ring, but so does Trent Dilfer. What a dumb play to end the season and possible his career. He had at LEAST 10 yards in front of him if he hangs on to it. He missed a chance to totally change his legacy. He could have been the guy who scrambled to set up the game winning FG despite an injured ankle, but now he’s the idiot who attempted a pass that most high schoolers have enough sense not to try. Great season, Favre. Too bad you went back to normalcy.

You could have thanked me for the correction there- Mark. Just trying to help. I will say this though- you can’t hold that many records and be considered overrated. Period. Favre is a top 10 guy (of all time). You can hate him b/c he’s a bit of prima donna or an attention whore but you can’t argue with the facts. 300plus straight starts, numerous passing records, a Super Bowl ring and an outstanding acting performance in There’s Something about Mary. The guy’s done it all….

Prior to the game today I knew it was highly probable that Favre would throw a critical interception at the key point in the game – and he did. He’s been so consistent in throwing interceptions at exactly the wrong time that counting on him to lose the game was a no-brainer. Bradley is correct – most overrated player, and I too am SO GLAD not to have to listen to two weeks of Brett Blather!!

Brett Favre may be a “failure” in the NFL at the moment, but at least he will always still be superior to that low-life, law-ignoring, steroid-gulping, wealth-squandering, dog-torturing, poor excuse for a QB and overall failure of a human being known as Mike Vick.
Seen Mr. Vick in any nationwide commercials lately?

I also caught the editorial proofreading error, Tyler. Perhaps Mr. Bradley was too caught up in the rush to publish the first editorial denouncing Brett Favre’s ability to notice little things like creating coherent sentences. Judging solely from his picture above, I would say Bradley, a 55 or 60 year old man is obviously so sorely insecure in his own manhood that he feels the need to belittle Brett Favre who, among many other things, has recently become the oldest quarterback to win an NFL game. But I digress. On what authority does Bradley have the right to rip apart Favre? I suppose it may be his marginal involvement in the sporting community as a “journalist”, as (again) judging by his picture, the man appears to be athletically challenged, so we can probably rule out any professional career. He, like most of us, probably enjoys the games from the comfort of his own living room couch. Maybe he should spend some time criticizing other players in the NFL who’ve actually done something wrong like you know, his own city’s Mike Vick or Plaxico, or Pacman, etc.(instead of Favre who has brought in the most revenue from sale of his jersey for the past 2 years. In 2008, actually, Brett Favre’s’ Jets’ jersey was the #1 selling jersey, followed closely by his Packers’ jersey–a team he didn’t even play for! and in 2009 his Vikings’ was the #1 seller), Get a life, Bradley. And check your facts while you’re at it (as well as the syntax of your “articles”). If Brett were overrated, why is everyone devouring his merchandise?! You’re trying to become relevant in the rough world of sports journalism by creating a controversial article but it’s not coming off as genuine. You just seem like a loser/hater for rooting against a 40 year-old man who has created nothing but competition, passion, and excitement for the game of football for the past 19 seasons. For the record, the most over-rated player of our time is Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles. However, my arguments for this are beyond the scope of this post…

As a Bears’ fan, I cannot stand Brett Farve, but I respect him. Yet, while everyone is bashing Mr. Bradley, he does have a point. Farve has been throwing that “clutch time” interception for some years, to the point where you know it was going to happen. Farve may not be the most overrated, but he’s not the best quarterback ever. Also, although he did not lose the game, when he had a chance to win it, he did not. With Brett, you get the good and the bad, sometimes in the same game

overrated? not sure about that. I think the Saints defense made Farve make a poor decision on the interception when he could’ve run a few yards to give his kicker a better look. The Saints knocked Farve down 15 times and he didn’t want to get hit again… threw against the grain, in the middle of the field, for the INT. I’m glad the Saints won and I wish I could be in the French Quarter this week and Miami next week. Those guys know how to party !

Michelle Wie! I will never forget the day I heard Golic and Greenie on “Mike and Mike in the Morning” proclaim that Michelle Wie was THE next truly legit superstar on the horizon. Wow, how many times is Brett Favre going to throw the most idiotic of interceptions in playoffs games? Two years ago he threw a really dumb interception that let the New York Giants waltz into the Super Bowl. Several years ago he threw one of the dumbest interceptions I’ve seen in the history of the playoffs to give the Philadelphia Eagles a pass to the Super Bowl.
On the last play the Vikings had in regulation, had he just stumbled forward for a few yards on a wide open field and given his kicker a chance to make the field goal the Vikings might have won. But instead, Favre didn’t give his team a chance and committed the cardinal sin of throwing the ball across the field in good winning position.
Yes, his teammates fumbled and stumbled too on offense. What is with Adrian Peterson not being able to hang on to the ball? But Favre, in the most critical of situations, when even no gain would have been better than an interception, turned the ball over.
How sad

I Mr Brett Favre didn’t want any scrutiny, he should have stayed retired. He knew this kinda of press would be coming his way, esp. after the way last year with the Jets!
I will admit, Favre did better than I thought he would in the reg season…..but hey, he’s no spring chicken….he choked and there is no harm in that; cause, well, he made it to the NFC Champshp game…..not to shabby.
But Favre should LET IT GO!……………retire with some dignity.

By your reasoning, whichever QB loses next week is the biggest fraud of the year? Favre willed a team that had half a dozen fumbles to somehow tie the game in regulation, and got them close to a 50 yard field goal attempt. And he is overrated? I’ll tell you one thing you aren’t overrated on… your spelling skills. I always laugh at ignorant old fools like you who crap on guys with special talent, while you are hammering away at your keyboard, nameless, never having accomplished anything of note, other than typing “of all team”. I told my buddy flat out that before the game was over, Favre would make a critical mistake by trying to force one into coverage. Every big game he does this. I remember a playoff game with the Rams in which he had 6 interceptions.
As to Favre himself – I actually feel sorry for him. This is not a happy man, and retirement will be his undoing. There is something deeply neurotic is his behavior.

Favre being great and overrated are not mutually exclusive concepts. The fact that Terry Bradshaw, who’s basically an idiot, calls him the greatest QB ever doesn’t make that a concensus. Donovan McNabb is the more overrated QB. Favre is not nearly as overrated as Terrell Owens. In fact, Favre is not even the most overrated player on his team. That would be Adrian Peterson. As for most overrated athlete, I have to go with Allen Iverson … the caveat that I know or care nothing about hockey.

While Farve is not the most overrated as Bradley states, he certainly is not the greatest ever either. I cringed every time they displayed a graphic showing Farve breaking another Montana record. Do we really think Farve as better than Montana? No, its a matter of accumulating stats over a 19 year career.
Is Farve a Top 10 QB of All-Time? Unquestionably, as he essentially restored Green Bay as a relevant football city after disappearing in the ’80s. Where he falls in the Top 10 is up for debate but he is in the conversation for sure.

Now if you will allow me, I will make a sporting comment. Favre had what can be described as a great year. That he committed the one error that arguable kept his team from the Super Bowl is forgivable and does not diminish his great year, or great career for that matter. Would that the Falcons had kept him all these years. The things that might have been.

Last one was due to coach sending 12 players on the field immediately right after a time out within field goal range. He was trying to throw back across the field to get the field goal kicker in the middle of the field. I knew after 12 men on the field they were in trouble….. They were the better team but lost. In deed the interception was a bad turn of events, but it was the 5th turn over and the second of 2 in the red zone. The first turn over in the red zone would have sealed the win for the Vikings. Get on the page of reality! The loss was nothing short of a series of mistakes and calls. Not all being the result of Brett Favre. He’s undoubtably one of the greatest quarterbacks that’s played the game…you on the other hand will only be remembered by a select few. Most of which will think you’re nothing short of out classed, one dimentional, wanna be sports writer. One that didn’t make a real impact on reporting the facts or making a difference on anything real. That cannot be said about Brett Favre.

Vikings kicked the Saints all over the field? What are you smoking? Did you see the game. The Vikings lost that game. Not Favre. The whole freaking team. Injuries depleted the secondary. Fumbles by you top running back and wide receivers. The defense only had 1 sack and barely any pressure on Brees. The Vikings O-line might as well be matadors the way that they let the rush knock down Brett. Okay I will give it to you about ESPN and the love fest for Brett. But that is less about his playing and more about his playing style. Tell me one other QB that would have stuck around for that punishment, hobbling around. Peyton? Hell no, not the golden child. Brett plays old school football the way it should be played. Hard and for the fun. I am a Bears fan and I hate everything about the Packers and Vikings (albeit not as much) but I know where to give the respect and admiration.

Mark, once again you have fallen into the trap that a lot of journalists do and that is to not allow the facts to get in the way with the truth. You failed to mention that the Minnesota defense shut down the saints totally in the second half. And a field goal gotten out of anyone of those fumbles by Peterson wins the game for them.
How about the courage Favre showed throughout the game? I love Peyton Manning, but did you see his game. He would see someone coming at him and he would lay down. Favre stood there and received his hits, wanting to do nothing but win. I appreciate your opinions. But I totally disagree with you on this one.
Sure, the fanfare was and is a bit much as it relates to Favre. But look at the facts of this game. Minnesotas defense had shut New Orleans down and it was Petersons 4 fumbles that cost them. Not Favre throwing the interception.

Mark, the only way you could write this column is to justify a foolish position you took earlier. The reason the Vikings lost the game was the multiple fumbles. Favre played a good — not great — game. The offensive line let the Saints pound him. Most players — of any age — would have retreated to the bench after some of those hits, and especially after the ankle injury. We have lived in an age of great quarterbacks. I’m not ready to say Farvre is the greatest, but he is one of the best. His enthusiasm for the game and heart cannot be questioned.
You are far from the greatest sportswriter of our time.

Favre reminds me of YA Tittle. The greatest icon photo of all time is the one of him kneeling and bleeding from the head on the field after the loss to Chicago in the Championship Game in 1963. Even though it was 46 years ago I can remember every detail.
The Beatles had just become a sensation in America. Kennedy had just been laid to rest. A dance craze called the twist was finally kaput, opening the way for the Mashed Potatoe, and all the other the dance-of-the-month crazes that swept america from 1964 to1966 when it finally died out. If you went to a lot of Jr. High School dance parties, and danced last month’s craze instead of the latest craze, people talked about it. Once I did the alligator instead of the crocodile and I never heard the end of it. Cost me a date with a cheerleader. I cried. Fact. Jack.
Anyway, America needed a hero.
Well, YA Tittle was driving the Giants down to the red zone. Chicago Bears were reeling. One more TD pass would give the Giants the V.
But Da Bears smothered, covered and clobbered the Giants and, and now you know the REST of the story.

Mark, either you’re just stirring the pot for response or you’re a very cynical man. No way Brett is the most overrated athlete of our time. Not even close! However he is probably one of the most beloved athletes of our time and a sure Hall of Famer. I was never a Green Bay fan or a Jets fan or a Minnesota fan but like a lot of people I pulled for Green Bay and New York and Minnesota because of Brett. Why? Maybe it’s the concept of proving someone wrong who tells you that you can no longer do what you love any longer because you’ve reached a certain age. Maybe it’s the idea of proving your critics wrong. But there are thousands, perhaps millions of football fans who respect and adore what this man has done over the years. He’s not perfect but he’s a winner . . . one of the greatest to ever play the game. And for some unknown reason cynical media types like yourself can’t stand the guy. Sure he’s made mistakes but you know he’s won a heck of a lot more games for his teams than he’s lost over the years. The man is tough as nails and he possesses a great deal of heart . . . something cynics like yourself will never understand and always belittle. Perhaps you should try writing with a little less cynicism. Reading your column would be much more enjoyable if you did!

I’m not sure we watched the same game. Part of me wanted the Vikings to win because of Favre and part of me wanted the Saints to win just because. I saw the Vikings fumble 4 times at bad times to kill drives. I saw Peterson not give Favre a pocket to put the ball in on a fumbled handoff. I saw Favre try to make a play when clearly his ribs were bothering him from a slam sack earlier and bum ankle that would have kept most men out of the game. I saw him try to make a play when he knew he would not be able to run or take an open field tackle. I think The Vikings offense as a whole make plenty of mistakes to go around, any one of which could have changed the outcome of the game.
For those criticizing Terry Bradshaw, I think the man has 4 Super Bowl rings so yes, I think what he has to say is relevant in this context. Exagerated for TV, probably, but still relevant.
Having said all this, it is good to see the Saints in the Super Bowl if it couldn’t be the Falcons.

Mark you are way off your mark. I realize that this is your platform and you may use it as you see fit, however, Brett in no way lost that game. The guy took a beating because his line was not giving him adequate protection. I wonder how many younger guys would have withstood that beating. I watched the right tackle blocking down to help his team mate double team a guy and totally let the DE release untouched. His O-line should get their A$$’$ chewed today.
Adrian could have had that hand off that landed on the ground had he been paying attention. I tell my running backs that they have some responsibility in the hand off as well as the QB. Something else that Brett brought to the table this year is wisdom and leadership earned through years of success and experience.
Furthermore, his team lost by only THREE points to the hottest team in the NFL!!! I think your personal jealousies and dislikes for the KING should remain silent. Write something on something, say, the man who won the hotdog eating contest.

I don’t care if Favre had 100,000 career passing yards–there were 15 seconds left, you’re inside Ryan Longwell’s field goal range, you rolled out to the right and there was NO ONE in front of you for at least 5 yards. Every NFL QB with two brain cells to rub together heads for the sideline and gives his team a shot at the winning field goal. But he throws it across his body into double-coverage.
And I’m supposed to accept that a guy who makes THIS play is the greatest quarterback of all time?????
Brett Favre is the Cal Ripken of the NFL. In other words, he is an extremely overrated athlete whose ‘great records’ are all the result of playing forever.
Had Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, or Aaron Rodgers made that throw–the ESPN guys would have been calling him the stupidest person in NFL history. Heck, had Tom Brady done that they would have said it. But the Golden Boy gets a pass. Of course.

Is the loss Favre’s fault? I personally don’t care if the Vikings would have won or lost. I’ve grown up a Favre fan and he is arguably among the best quarterbacks of all-time. Yes, I think he made a bad play and he, along with many others (on and off the field) have made plenty of bad plays. His came at a very bad time, twice in his career, but folks… It’s more than just his playing that made me a fan (and irate at times as well), but it’s the guy. I don’t know if he’s a man’s man or what, but to me he is a role model…. a human role model. You can question my choice, my judgment, but for me the fact that he lives his work-life on television, plays with such passion and heart… It is not easy to describe, but the man makes me proud. There aren’t many things in life I can think of that I would “really” like to do, but shaking Brett Favre’s hand would be near the top of my list.

Favre surpassed at least two QB postseason records last night (surpassing Montana). He made two mistakes and they were costly, but the bigger mistakes were the penalties on the Vikings defense (one of which was questionable) and the fumbles by Adrian Peterson. No, Favre is not the most overrated player of all time. That honor goes to “The Boz” or Michael Vick.

You can blame Favre for his two INT’s, Peterson for his fumbles, but in the end I blame the head coach. Despite the turnovers Minnesota had a chance to win it in regulation, but the last minute of regulation was some pretty poor clock management. Then on top of that, to get an illegal substitution penalty that puts you out of FG range was pitiful.

You obviously have never played the game of football Bradley. On a handoff the ballcarrier is suppose to creat a pocket around the belly and close on it when he feels the ball hit him in the stomach. AP clearly was closeing his arms before the ball got there. Thus the fumble isn’t on Farve. Are you going to write a column slamming AP with his fumbling problems? I wouldn’t bet on it. Farve’s last throw was pretty silly considering he could’ve easily run for 7-8 years to ensure a FG attempt. I just hate it when Mr. Sportswriter guy Bradley is perfectly willing to slam a HOF QB when he’s never put on a pair of shoulder pads in his life , and stepped between the lines. You’re pathetic Mark. Truly pathetic.

Talking about a writer searching for acorn, man you’re searching hard. The tight butt coach that got down the field to the 33 yard line and refused to try to get closer, confusion set in and a 5 yard penalty moved them out (coach my friend not QB caused that problem). Peterson fails to take hand off from Favre and loses ball at the end of the first half (blaming Favre for that, really stupid). Peteson fumbles ball down deep leading to a Saints touchdown (blaming Favre for that too). Receivers dropped key passes all game and of course that was Favre’s fault too. Bradley find another subject to toot your horn, you have no case here.

Mark, you are absolutely right. Favre has a cannon of an arm, but his fundamental problem is his incredible ego, which makes him think that he can make unmakeable plays and beat the world. Common sense fails him at the worst possible times. He probably will get into the Hall of Fame simply because of his career stats. But he does not even belong in “the greatest quarterback of all time” discussion. He isn’t even in the room.

Mark-Long suffering Vikings fan here. I went through all of the defeats in the Super Bowl in the 70’s when I was a kid, through all of the losses to Washington, Atlanta, New York and now New Orleans in the NFC championship. It’s now 34 years and counting since our last Super Bowl appearance and all I’m left with is…”Brett Favre is a MORON”!!
The really aggravating thing is this team has talent, but I submit that Favre has actually set them back a number of years. Who is going to play QB for this team and bring them back to this point? Not T-Jack or Rosenfals. Bringing Favre in was a huge gamble and it’s going to cost this cursed franchise for years to come.

Good perspective Mark. Favre probably will be a first ballot Hall of Famer, but with all of the positive records that he holds, he has also thrown more interceptions than any quarterback in NFL history. They seem to come more often in the post-season. That is not protecting the football.

Perhaps I am wrong but I think those who are blasting you are not looking at this from the perspective of how Favre is viewed as far
as his ranking goes with other HOF and legendary QB’s.
Rather they are viewing it as if you are stating that Favre has
not been a great QB in his career. Which of course would be a
silly argument. But to compare Favre with some of these other
quarterbacks and put him a some do among the top 5 of all time is
equally foolish . To throw a pick in that circumstance yesterday
with that much on the line and that place on the field is unforgiveable.
Much has been made of the Peterson fumbles and other turnovers but if
you are the elite QB that you have been proclaimed to be no way you
throw that type of careless int. If you are a truly a legend, rather
you find a way to get enough yards for the FG and win. There is much
to be admired about Favre but he is flawed and he is the guy who drove
Holmgren crazy with bad decisions. On a personal level being a little
older than Brett I was hoping that he would pull it out . I have other
friends in the same age bracket wanting to see a Favre/ Manning matchup.
Folks today may be making excuses for Brett but you better know that
when Favre looked in the mirror this morning he knew clearly where
to lay the blame.

Until recently, the Falcons have been one of the worst franchises in NFL history – and they still have a way to go to dig themselves out of that hole.
Favre’s got to thank his lucky stars that Atlanta moved him long ago… it’s made all the difference in his career.

1) You can’t assume Longwell would have made a 50 yard FG.
2) The 12-men penalty forced Favre to throw against a defense primed for an obvious passing down.
3) Peterson deserves more blame for fumbling the punt at the 10 yard line, giving the Saints an easy 7.
4) Neither the Vikings nor Favre should take blame for the loss considering the NFL has the most asinine overtime rules in the history of sports.

Yes, it was a bad decision at the end of the game but my God, how can you not admire him (forget liking him) for the sheer force of will it took to drag himself back onto the field? You can’t blame him for losing that game, he had much help from his teamates who couldn’t hold onto the damn ball! And they wouldn’t have even been in the NFC championship without Brett. Yes, he’s an egomaniac, what athlete isn’t? But he has class and I love watching him play. Bradley, you’re just trying to stir the pot, pathetic. Okay Marky Mark, Overated may be a bit strong here. overated Q.B.’s don’t usually lead their team this far in the playoffs and be just a minor whiff away of playing in the big game. What a great story it could have been if Favre had not only taken his team to Miami but walked away a victor down there. I normally pull for the team thats a little closer in so I cheered for N.O. but held out Favre as my sentimental favorite. Out of these quarterbacks, who would be more likely to throw that pick in that situation: Joe Montana, Troy Aikman, Steve Young, Jon Elway, Brett Farve? The answer is Brett Farve. That interception he threw was just not “one mistake” in his career, he does that more often then all the quarterbacks I just mentioned. Farve throwing a pick is a surprising as Culter throwing a pick. What was suprising, however, was the lack of picks he threw this year. Brett is a hall of famer, he has gawdy stats and the longevity. But for every last minute comeback he has, he has a last minute letdown.

Mark, it’s a catch 22. If he is overrated, he must necessarily have played on big stages through his career. In order to get to that point he must have amassed a winning record that would make any QB envious. While his decision-making has been questionable throughout his career, he has made some major throws to put him under the spotlight he has rightly earned. Favre will rightfully go down as one of the all-time greats…. he would be unambiguously the best if he played with the FB IQ of manning or marino, using him as a footstep to thump your own chest is disingenuous.

I wouldn’t agree with Bradley that Favre is the most overrated QB of all time (lots to choose from), but I think a solid argument could be made that he’s the most egomaniacal. (Lots of competition there, also, but Favre is tops.)
Favre desperately wants to go out in a blaze of Super Bowl glory, a la John Elway. Problem is, he’s not following the Elway late-career playbook — don’t worry so much about winning with your arm, but manage the game, avoid turnovers, and keep feeding the ball to your stud back. That’s because Elway managed to keep his ego in check and follow the plan. Favre is incapable of resisting the impulse to be the cannon-armed, late-game hero — THE MAN, as he was in Green Bay until the maturing of Rodgers allowed them to divest themselves of an aging scatter-armed QB whose me-first, me-second, team-third mentality would always stand in the way of another championship.
Post-Green Bay, Favre was shrewd enough to recognize the Elway-Broncos Super Bowl Winning Template and align himself with teams that stressed defense and running, first NYJ, then Minnesota. Favre even managed to follow the playbook the first half of the season. But he got lucky with a few game-winning miracle throws, which fed his ego and drive to be THE MAN. Remember the crisis about 3/4 into the Vikings’ season, when Favre revolted, to the extent that he wouldn’t even address Childress as “Coach” but by his first name, Brad? At that point, the INT in field-goal range that ended the 4th quarter, with Minny never again touching the ball, was inevitable.
Favre will always break his team’s fans’ hearts by leading them to the brink of triumph, then stupidly squandering it with a bone-ehaded INT.
Overrated? Not necesssarily. Egomanical? Definitely.

I was sitting with five other people, and as soon as I saw him pull back, said “Oh my god–he’s going to throw an interception.” And he did.

LOL, Bradley, if I could have dinner with three people, I think it’d be yourself, Smoltz, and Favre at this point.
Brett’s a gunslinger. It’s done things for him in the past, and he wouldn’t have hit his successes (or failures) without it. Last night’s game was partly on his shoulders, but to give him credit, he was both really beaten up in the game — got taken off the field twice, as I recall — and the team didn’t exactly help seal the deal, either. They fumbled three times in Saints territory in the second half, no?
It is what it is. The Saints were a slightly better team going in and playing at home. That’s my general take. Favre isn’t perfect, but he’s a first ballot HOF guy, and that’s okay with me.

Wow. Hell of a lot of support for a guy who was a complete disgrace as an Atlanta Falcon on and off the field, only to straighten out once he left.
I disagree that Favre is the most overrated athlete of our time — love him or hate him, he has accomplished a lot, and I think that title should apply to people like Danica Patrick who get tons of press coverage and airtime but haven’t done sh-t. But he most definitely is overrated, seeing as how the media refuses to blame him for any mistake he makes and acts like he is perfect.
I wonder how many of the people supporting Favre on this blog criticized people like me for cheering for Michael Vick on Dec. 6. At least Vick managed to take the Falcons to the playoffs a couple of times. Only time Favre came close to doing anything good for the Falcons was during his painkiller-induced dreams. Funny how Vick gets hated on for “destroying the Falcons” or whatever and Favre doesn’t.

Bradley….Why All The Hate???. I don’t think that anyone that really watched the game last night could say that Bret “really” lost that game. Sure the interception at the end of regulation was a key component in the Vikings lost, but what about all the fumbles, missed tackles, missed opportunities to score in the red zone and the dropped passes???? The Saints defense kept hitting Bret all night long and he kept getting up and continuing to play hard. Hell, if he had taken himself out of the game, then you’d be razing him for that too.
Maybe I missed the news conference, but what have you done Bradley at 39-40 years of age that is comparable??? Waiting for a legitimate response!!!!!
To BRENDA – Get your facts straight ….NEWSFLASH: the Falcons have already been to a Superbowl and it wasn’t Michael Vick that got the team there!!! Yes, the lowly Atlanta Falcons (who you continually try to trash) beat the Saints to a Superbowl appearance…..Bet you thought your boy Vick was going to the Superbowl this year riding the coattails of the Eagles and McNabb…..NOT!!!!! LOL!!!!!

Blogging Fool….operative word “fool”.
Agree that Favre is not the greatest QB ever or even currently playing. He is the Cal Ripken/Iron Man of football. He shows up and plays every game and plays through pain (sometimes to his own detriment). Playing through a sprained ankle could very well be why Favre didn’t tuck the ball in and try to get a few yards on the ground vs. throwing across his body for INT on his last play….we’ll never know. Even if he would have just thrown the ball away, i highly doubt Longwell hits a 57 yard FG. To equate this INT to the NYG/GB one is idiotic.
To say he is most overrated is absolutely ridiculous. There is only one QB each year that is able to hold the Lombardi trophy over his head. I am not sure how someone who has QB’d teams to 23 playoff games and a superbowl win in his career becomes overrated. To put so many teams in the position and on his back to be in the playoffs and be able to compete for a superbowl is the mark of a great player.
Also, consider he is doing this at 40!!! Find another 40 year old QB in the history of the NFL that actually made his team and teammates better…you won’t…Montana and Marino (who btw never won super bowl, wouldn’t he be most overrated????), two of the arguably greatest QBs of all-time were mere shells of themselves in their late 30’s and never made it to 40.

Favre got Minnesota a heck of a lot closer to the Superbowl than how many other Quarterbacks? And, Favre is how old? I don’t think many other QB’s would have kept coming back and getting the hell beat out of him, taped up an ankle and kept playing the way he did! My hat is off to him for his ability and guts to stay in the game! You may not like him but his records will be among the greatest to ever play the game! There are a lot of others on the Vikings team that are way more to blame for their loss!

I wasnt pulling for either team but it sure looked like some home cooking in OT with the review booth.
4th down- ball knocked back behind the first down yardage marker but give the first down anyway
Reception given to Meachem when it was clear the ground helped him make the “catch”
with super slow mo and HD replays, we get to see just how corrupt the reply booth is.

I will agree that Brett Favre may be a bit overrated but he wasn’t even the most overrated guy on the field last night. Reggie Bush was the number 2 pick in the draft with comparisons to Gale Sayers and has had 4 good games in his entire career. Last week he was quoted as saying Big Time players make big plays in games like these, and this week went out and accounted for 41 total yards of offense which isn’t that bad by his own standards- it’s just about what he averages for his career.

How can you put that loss on Brett and say he cost them the game, lets look at the game as a whole, Brett was not the one supposed to put pressure on Brees and fail to do so. Brett was not on the field in overtime when the defense did not stop the Saints. (add some help by the stripes) Brett had two interceptions and a fumble that was more on AP than Brett, AP put the ball on the ground three times, the super rookie from Florida put the ball on the ground twice, the reciever put the ball on the ground inside the red zone. If brett is so overrated then why does he hold most of the passing records? Why has he lasted 19 seasons in the NFL? Over rated is McNabb but you probly think he’s the greatest. Your an idiot. The VIKING’s lost that game not just Brett.

WOW Mark, spoken like a man who has not played past High School or not played real football at all. For those who have played the game past high school know it is not won or lost by one individual. Football is a team sport if you didn’t know. To try and portray you know the game please don’t waste our time, this article or column proves you are just another stupid fan that has little insight on how the game is played. Monday morning arm chair QB’s come a dime a dozen. Very few make it as far as Brett has in his career. Very few will make it that far in the future. His long tenure as a starter in the NFL says it all. Keep dreaming and you will still fall short of Brett Farve. Spoken from a person who is not a Farve fan.

Are you still having traders remorse (from the Falcons)? I counted 5 turnovers by the Vikings. Brett had 2 interceptions. The last one caused the game to end regulation in a tie. The Vikings never got the ball in overtime (still wish the NFL would change that rule).

Mark, its pretty low of you to go so far in order to support your opinion of Favre – which is completely wrong. Yeah he made some mistakes, but he is THE reason that the Vikes made it so far. No question. Yeah he messed up, but the loss can’t fall on his shoulders. If anything, Childress should be blamed for the 12 men on the field penalty…THAT lost the game for the Vikes.

C’mon Mark, if the Vikings hadn’t been penalized on that last series for having twelve men in the huddle (five yards) then they’d have likely run the ball on that 3rd down play. They’d run it on 1st and 2nd and the FG kicker was reportedly “good as gold” from 52 yards in pre-game drills.

I understand a lot of folks hate/despise Brett Favre, and they wanted to see him fail. But for the guy to gut it out last night and do everything possible to win the game (other than find someone objective to look at the instant replay reviews) took courage.
When he had to be helped off the field, and then was lying on a table with his hands over his face, I thought for sure he – and the Vikings – were done. But they weren’t.
As for the last drive in regulation, after the penalty, they had to gain some yards. Another run up the middle would have made a very long – and unlikely – field-goal attempt.

I think Favre believed his own hype going into the game. I could see the head coach talking to him on the sidelines and Favre ignoring him. This game was lost on Favre’s arrogance. Instead of making the right play, he wanted to be the hero, and not give the TEAM a chance. It didn’t all have to rest on his shoulders. I’m sure he wanted to go for the touchdown instead of the field goal in the first place.

Why does everything Favre, positive or negative or neutral, have to be blown 9000 miles out of proportion? Finally, someone who says it like it is!
Brett Favre is not a team player, unless you count Team Favre. It’s not about his talent, it’s about his attitude. It’s about the fact that he is such an incredible egomaniac, that he can’t stay retired. It’s about the fact that loyalty only goes to himself – not to an organization like Green Bay who helped Brett Favre build himself and grow into the so-called legend he is now. And how does he repay them? He goes to Minnesota with the world’s largest chip on his shoulder to make Green Bay “pay” for what they did to him. Please – if this man held a shred of decency, he would never have gone to Minnesota.
I am so sick of seeing his pompous ego on my TV and I am glad that he’s gone for the season. It’s nice to see that someone actually isn’t bowing before the so-called great Brett Favre and calls it what it is. He’s a joke.

Not sure I would call Favre overrated. He’s done it all in this game and is a definite Hall of Famer. But I will say that his ego has gotten the better of him, especially in his later years. And I also blame the owners of the Jets and Vikings who cater to his prima donna behavior. And this crap where Favre vetos the coach and dictates when he plays? What is he a 5 year old? Mike Holmgren would have never put up with that crap in Green Bay nor would Ron Wolfe the former Packers GM. An ego when channeled correctly can accomplish great things, but when its pampered, it rarely leads to championships. When two teams are equal in talent, the team with the better leadership wins. Saints leadership won over Vkings leadership last night. Be that as it may, Favre has been unreal. And when he plays within himself, he’s one of the greatest QB’s of all time.

Mt last comment will be this, with out Brett where would the vikings have been during the playoffs? At home watching like normal. The one main constant in all of the blastings toward Brett on this site, his mistakes made while playing in CHAMPIONSHIP games. Where has Green Bay been since Brett the over rated left? No super bowls!! The jets went to the championship game and LOST, is that Brett’s fault too? His super rookie replacement had how many interceptions this year? Do you really think any of the teams Brett has started for would have went to the playoffs without him? Maybee they would the only true test will be where they go without him. The only other player I can recall that gets blamed for all the bad is T.O. and I see the Eagles are still not going to the super bowl, I guess the problem with the eagles was more than one guy, just like the Viking’s loss was a team effort. Should he of thrown that ball/ well now we can say no because we see what the outcome was, how many of us would have been in the spot to make the choice of run on my bad foot or throw a pass that may get caught or may get picked? I know I will never be in that position, probly not any one faulting Brett about his choice either.

Favre was so beat up by the time that overtime cut in. Peterson fumbling on a sure touchdown would have saved Favre a beating like few I have seen at this stage of a playoff game. Generally the lines are a little better and the refs protect a little better. Minnesota is one quarterback from not even being in the playoffs. One quarterback from not being in overtime and if he wasn’t 40 years old he would have won it, but at 40 he damn near did it anyway. Overtime in that mugging is way past most 40 year olds bedtime.

There needs to be international law enacted globallly that older athlete can not continue to stand in the way of younger player. Just like Bart Strr, Johnny Unitas, Sam Huff, Sammy Baugh, Jim Brown, and Kenny Stabler all retire Favre needs to get out of the players rank in the NFL. And the Vikings should be fined for letting him stand in the way of Mr. Jackson’s development. God menat for us all to be in our own time. The Favre is what he has always been – selfish. When all he had to do was run five steps and let the kicker win it – he couldn’t. He had to have that spotlight on himself.
The guy is like so many other self-centered men. Remember that Monday night in Oakland? Remember how the green and gold rained love on this man and followed him to the best 30 minutes of football ever played? And what did The Favre do… dumped them to pursue his own glory. Sort of like some men do after their wives have stayed home raising the kids and hosting the parties – trade them in for the fresh and the young… trying to recapture their youth.
Nope. The Favre isn’t into team. The Favre is into The Favre. And that is what made him the biggest goat in sports last night. Ain’t no “i” in team Bret.

Mark, I’m with you. I made a prediction back in 2003 that looked like a lock until this year about A-Rod and the Yankees never winning a championship as long as he was there. Took 6 years, but they finally did it. I thought I was wrong about this one with Favre, but as soon as I saw his little head turn toward the middle of the field on that roll out I sighed to my wife, “whew, at least Favre won’t let me down like A-Rod did.” And surely as a south Georgia summer is unbearable, he violated a cardinal rule of quarterbacking.

Its unfortunate that Brett Farve and the Vikings lost yesterday. They completely and thoroughly dominated the Saints. The only problem was they were sloppy with the football and had too many turnovers. They continued fumbling it and mishandling it all day long (just like the Saints did), which ultimately contributed to the Vikings losing the football game. However I dont think that is why the Vikings lost. I believe Brett Farve was the person at fault for the loss. On his last play for the Vikings before OT, he rolled out to his right and daylight was directly in front of him. Had he ran the ball downfield for about 5 yards or so instead of trying to force a throw and a subsequent interception, in spite of the 6 fumbles and 2 picks; the Vikings would have been playing in the superbowl; and that is inspite of a costly penalty at the end with too many players in the huddle. That penalty hurt the Vikings as well. But they would have overcome it had Farve made a better decision and run down field for at least 5 or maybe 15 years getting into his field goal kickers range. I believe Farve’s team would have beat the Saints and they would have beat the Colts in the Superbowl giving Farve his coveted superbowl championship. Farve came within seconds of pulling off the victory over the saints. For that I give him a bunch of credit because no other team manhandled the Saints as much as the Vikings did yesterday. A great performance for the ages. I dont care what anyone says about Brett Farve; he showed why he was the man of steel yesterday. Farve got butchered all afternoon by the Vikings. They were putting vicious licks on him all day..There was one play where he got crushed when he was hit high and low on the same play and then a defender fell on top of him. I thought he was dead under the pile. Brett went over to the sidelines, layed out on a stretcher and was taped while the Saints had the ball. As soon as the Vikings got the ball back on offense within minutes, #4 was ready to go. Anybody else would have probably had to go to the hospital, but not Brett Farve. Brett Farve is the ultimate warrior and as I mentioned he made one mistake in that football game that cost him his superbowl berth. When he rolled out on the last play that the Vikings had the ball on offense Farve should have ran down the field for at least 5 years and the Vikings would be playing in the superbowl this year. Thats how close Brett Farve came to realizing his dreams and thats why he came back to play football. The legend of Brett Farve grew immensely yesterday and will continue on for ever.

You are way out of touch. You have a 40 year old Quarterback that has played hurt and was knocked around in this game. I have seen many of your so called good players go to the locker room and miss the rest of the game. Brett has played hurt thru his career and you want to put the blame on him for losing a game. What about the other players that could not hold onto the ball. You want to talk about overrated , how about Peterson? No mention there?

ok one more, this is for ACE, maybe he has more int’s because he has more attempts than any body else to go along with 7,968 more yards (69,329 total yards)than #2 QB Dan Marino and 1,116 more completions (6,083 total completions) and 77 more TD’s (497 total TD’s). Dan Marino is 2nd in all of these stats and he is considered to be one of the best ever yet he never won a superbowl. Over rated Brett has won a superbowl. and only 10 QB’s have ever won more than one superbowl.

Just like everyone has been saying about the keith brooking comment that he made, “If a defense doesnt like a team scoring then for gods safe STOP THEM!!!! Hey Ricky at 12:33, don’t you think it is arrogant of someone to continue playing when they are injured? Why would you want your injury to cause a mistake and cost your team a big game? Not to mention what he did to the entire Jets organization last season by playing injured. This is the essence of Brett Favre’s arrogance. He is human waste, a dark, scum of a person, who deserves nothing but the worst kind of hate.

JET,
Cry me a river. What were the Saints supposed to do? Let him stand in the pocket and pick them apart all day? The rules protect NFL QB’s so much these days, so when defenders can take a shot at the QB they’ll do it. The Saints lit Warner up last week after that INT in the second quarter and I thought it was glorious! I’m so stick of these QB’s being allowed to throw for 300-400 yards while most of the penalties are called against defenders. It’s so bogus. This is tackle not flag football.

These stats are from Wikipedia, so I have not double checked with the NFL, but lets look at Favre’s records …. hmm yeah, he looks like an average quarterback to me !!! Bradley, do some homework! If you want to claim he’s over-rated, then state it and justify what makes you think that. But the most over-rated player? Pretty melodramatic and no way you could even come close showing justification as an “expert” to that opinion.
Favre currently possesses most of the well-known NFL career records for quarterbacks, including:
Most consecutive AP NFL MVP awards: 3 (1995, 1996, 1997)[19]
Most consecutive starts by a quarterback (NFL): 286[7] (308 including playoffs)
Most consecutive starts by a player at any position: 286
Most wins by a starting quarterback (NFL) regular season career: 181[7] (Regular season record: 181-104)
Most career passing touchdowns: 497 [3][5]
Most career passing yards: 69,329[5]
Most career pass completions: 6,083[1][7]
Most career pass attempts: 9,811[2][7][20]
Most career interceptions thrown: 317 [5][21]
Most career games with at least three touchdowns: 67 [22]
A victory recorded in the most different NFL stadiums: 32[23]
Most career playoff pass attempts: 745
Most career playoff pass completions: 481[24] [25]
Most career playoff passing yards: 5,855[24]
(2nd) Most career playoff passing touchdowns: 44[24] (Montana, 45)[25]
Not to mention a couple of Superbowl appearances, one of them a win.
Yep, looks like a bum to me….please!

Of course he lost the game, he threw an interception when he had a perfectly wide open man next to the sideline on the side he was running to he could have thrown to that was a sure thing that would have cinched the field goal try as good as any throw would have. Brett had to show off his tricks last week instead of being content to win the game handily, but no, he has to always be an ars, which is why they went out of their way in New Orleans to break his ars. You coolaid drinkers for Favre will never change, it is obvious that Peyton Manning is the best quarterback ever, Terry Bradshaw just said his nonsense because that’s all he knows to do to get attention now. That, he figures, keeps him on TV.

Greatfully this internet article is just an opinion column. The thing about opinions are like arm pits… you fill in the rest. Brett Farve brought a good team to a playoff contending level. Subtract 5 turnovers and it’s a Vikings vs Colts Superbowl. I vaguely remember another team that suffered an average of 4-5 turnovers per game as well, and the overwhelming majority of those were INTs.
Mark just wants to draw attention to himself so he can win the “I have more readers” competition at AJC. In my opinion (as much as it may stink) ESPN analysts are better than this guy and everyone knows ESPN analysts suck!

Bad decisions are sometimes saved by his superb athletic ability, but oft times his errant judgements have led to costly mistakes and turnovers. Guys, for those of you who are looking at a legacy for Brett may be we should compare apples to apples. I have looked up Brett’s career stats on NFL.com and there are at least four players off the top of my head that are better. Peyton Manning Has better stats and has a chance to win his second Super Bowl (Bret Favre has never done that) Tom Brady’s stats are better and he has 3 rings. Joe Montana has better stats and he has 4 rings. That is not to say Bret is not good but the accolades just do not add up. Every team he has played for (except my falcons) has gotten better after he left. He made not be the most over rated but he is also definitely not one of the greatest either.

Very sad and very hateful writing. You harbor much hate and that’s fine with me because it just consumes your soul… I wouldn’t be surprised if Mark Bradley beats the hell out of his wife for exhibiting such hatred.
The Vikings made plenty of mistakes and Favre’s final mistake is just one of many costly errors that blew the game. But only ignorant people will focus on the one key play at the end and ignore that a long field goal, even with a good kicker, is no guarantee.
Putting in 7 points but fumbling the ball instead (Adrian Peterson) is just as unforgivable as a Favre pick. Favre is not over-rated by any means. If Dru Brees loses to the colts in the Superbowl, does he become over-rated as well? Marino never won a superbowl and played terribly in key situations…is he overrated?

It doesn’t matter how many good records Favre has. Remember he’s also got that interception record. That’s what counts. Real life isn’t about heroes. It’s about normal people who don’t try to be heroes. Heroes win in mythological stories. In real life, heroes are defeated because they overrate their abilities. It doesn’t matter who you are, throwing across the field like that is a stupid unnecessary risk to take.

Mark, I have long been a Brett Favre hater (I admit he is great but not as great as the football heads make him), but that was not his fault. I think that was bad organization on the coaches part. That was the biggest sequence of the season for the Vikings and to have a 12 man on the field penalty was inexcusable. I think the interception was irrelvent because if he hits a shorter pass it is still a hard field goal ( >48 yds)

He was not the only one that screwed up. Peterson is the one overrated. If superglue on the gloves were legal then the Saints would not have stood a chance. I don’t know what the future plans are for Brett but if he truly calls it quits for REAL this time then truly a job well done and young quaterbacks should aspire to reach a fraction of his accomplishments. With all that being said, Saints fans can hang it up. Manning is a quarterback’s quarterback and will not make those mistakes and put on a clinic to bring glory to my wife’s team. Overrated??? I don’t think he is overrated. He didn’t blow the game. They were already in a bad place for a high chance field goal because of the penalty on the previous play. Thats one of they reasons why they to throw the ball. His pick didn’t determine the outcome of the game. Because they still could have missed the winning field goal and the game went into overtime. The saints didn’t win off of the int. The int sent it into overtime. Not to mention that there were four fumbles that played a huge part in the outcome for the vikings.

JET: I agree with your comments. I really used to have a lot of respect for the Saints going into the football championship game with the Vikings, but I have lost all respect for them. I no longer want the Saints to win the superbowl. The Saints got OUTPLAYED by the Vikings by a country mile. Final stat sheet: total offense: Saints:257 yards; Vikings: 475 yards! The Vikings generated almost twice the offense of the Saints and I didnt think that was possible. Its good enough just for the Saints to get there. I dont want the saints hoisting championship trophies or getting fitted for championship rings. They dont deserve it. They are a bunch of thugs and assasins. The saints pretty much had a bullseye over Farves head the entire afternoon as they were trying to hit the target all afternoon, punch his lights out and put him out of his misery. The saints were intentionally trying to injure Farve and they succeeded. Farve ended up on a stretcher getting taped up on the sidelines. But to Farves credit, he didnt miss one offensive play the entire afternoon. What a champion Brett Farve is. This game with the Saints will only add to Farves legacy. Farves play this season all year as well as his gutty performance in yesterdays game made a believer out of me. I believe in Brett Farve and I am glad he came out of retirement to grace us with his presence one more time. I dont agree with the way he handled it and how he held the Vikings hostage until August before notifying them of his intention to play for them, but the legend of Brett Farve was stabilized yesterday and I wish him nothing but the best in the future whether he comes back or not. THE FARVE WATCH IS ON.

Mark, until you lead a team to two Super Bowls (winning one of them), break every passing record known to mankind, and on top lead your team to two NFC championship games in four years (with two different teams, no less, after turning 36 years old) you really ought to keep your big mouth shut. Brett Favre showed more character and guts yesterday in four hours than most athletes do in a life time, not to mention more than most columnists like yourself do. Try getting slammed into Astroturf by linebackers two weeks in a row, so much that half your body is purple from bruises, and then we can talk. Meanwhile, if you want to write about over rated jocks, you have about 2 decades worth of Atlanta Braves players and coaches you can write about every day. Several things. . .
Favre is a great qb. He is in the room as far as the discussion of the greatest QB ever is concerned. He is tough and has great endurance. That said, he is a diva, an egomaniac, and can make bad decisions at the worst possible time.
The INT was a fundamentally bad decision, not just a bad throw at a bad time. I can understand him being a little gunshy about running, however, given the beaten he had taken (sliding was no guarantee of safety the way the Saints were taking cheap shots at him). He wanted to win the SB, not watch his backup play in it while he was in traction. Of course, why blame Farve only? Where’s the love for the Saint that actually did the INT. Of course, the Vikings were not in a good position for a field goal. Nevertheless, I’m sure the Vikings fans who would’ve preferred a 57 yard FG try to the INT number in the hundreds of thousands (at least). The guy did make a 57 yarder in his career before, and with the adrenalin coursing, distance may not have been a problem.
Never heard of Johnny Utah. Obviously the poster is referring to Johnny Knoxville.
I was sick of Favre after all the hype about him. So I was definitely rooting for the Saints. I’m still glad that Favre lost, considering his behavior toward Chilly (btw, Chilly’s “playing for overtime” is almost understandable, given Favre’s history and what actually happened, and Petersen’s and the rest of the Vikings’ fumbles). I will admit that I had more respect for Favre after watching him take that beating, although I also felt sorry for him somewhat. In today’s age, Farve is a perceived throwback. When you watch a player like Manning, you see how cerebral the game has become, and Favre at least seems to buck that trend. Overrated. Yes. The most overrated today? No.
He is in the room as far as the best ever is concerned. But he is not the best ever. The final test is coolness under ultimate pressure. And he has not passed that test overall, and he did fail it big time yesterday. The best QB’s are the one’s you just get that sick feeling in your stomach if you go against them because you know they’re going to find a way, especially when they’re tied or behind in the closing minutes. Joe Montana and Tom Brady have passed that test, along with John Elway and Terry Bradshaw. Joe Montana gets my vote as the best ever.
An aside about Bush: no matter how few yards he gained yesterday, he almost earned his money by finagling that reception into a TD. With a 4th and goal looming if he didn’t do it, his TD may have been the difference as things turned out.
As for the Saints, my happiness at their victory is fading. They got loved by the refs in OT. And they played classless football yesterday. They played the man, not the ball. They didn’t care less if the play was over or not. Comparable to the Brady Pats beating the Colts the first time in the AFC Championship game by raping their receivers. Speaking of the Colts, that’s who I will be rooting for in the SB.

Brett Favre is one of the greatest athletes of all time. He hasn’t missed a day of work in 20 years….beaten down by 300 lb. defensive linemen on a weekly basis. A champion isn’t always defined by someone who wins super bowls, world series, etc… Champions are people with big hearts, desire, passion and leadership. Brett made some mistakes, but he gave 110% every single day.
And by the way, I bet Mr. Favre made more money this year on Wrangler jeans commercials than you will make in your entire life.

Brett Farve messed up yesterday. As a fellow blogger pointed out earlier and it was the simplest explanation Ive heard so far, ALL BRETT HAD TO DO ON HIS FINAL ROLLOUT PLAY WHERE HE THREW AN ILLADVISED PICK WAS TO HOLD ONTO THE FOOTBALL AND SIMPLY TAKE ABOUT 5 MORE STEPS AND GET OUT BOUNDS. HAD HE DONE THAT, and if the field goal kicker had made the 47-50 yard field goal, THE VIKINGS WOULD BE PLAYING IN THE SUPERBOWL AGAINST THE COLTS. In addition, Brett Farve might have been named MVP of the league this season along with picking up MVP superbowl honors after beating the Colts and hoisting the Vince Lombardy trophy (superbowl championship), had the Vikings gone on to defeat the Colts, which they would have. Its really unfortunate because that is why Brett came out of retirement to do those things and he came so close to getting to do them. It hurts because I AM A HUGE BRETT FARVE FAN and Brett is such a gladiator and a warrior. I am really choked up about it right now, but Brett Farve didnt CHOKE.

I think the Minnesota Vikings are cursed. I remember back in 1998 when the Falcons were playing them in nfc championship game (the only year in the falcons existence of every playing in the superbowl) where the Viking had a chance to win the game in regulation. Gary Anderson was an extremely accurate field goal kicker and he had made all of his field goals kicks for the entire year (100%). By an incredible fate of bad luck and a complete fluke, he missed a chip shot field goal kick in the closing seconds that would have given the Vikings a superbowl berth. Instead the game went into overtime and the Falcons eventually won when they held the Vikings scorless in overtime and got the ball back and went down the field and kicked the winning field goal. That was a heartbraking loss for the Vikings and they probably would have won the superbowl since they had the team with the best record that year.

Adrian Peterson coughed up the ball 3 TIMES!!!! And ran for ZERO yards on 12 different carries. If he doesn’t fumble 3x, and you think the Vikings could have just scored 3 ponts from his fumbles, then it is Peterson’s fault.

Brett is an ultimate choker. He’s like the Great Pumpkin. You get all hyped up and he never shows. Adrian Petersons’ fumbles did not cause a change of possession. As a matter of record, the last one gained him 7 yards. But he sucks too

Mark,
You’re joking right? I mean you can’t serious be saying leading your team to the NFC Championship constitutes an “epic” failure?
Sometimes, it is best merely to admit a mistake and move on. To foolishly insist you are right amid all evidence to the contrary is the “hobgoblin of small minds!”
What Favre did was pretty damn impressive by all measures. If he decides to retire, he’s merely added one more rich chapter to his Hall of Fame resume. Certainly he could have handled the interim period better, but that’s a separate issue.
In terms of how he played this season, it was pretty darn excellent, putting him in the small circle of people seriously talked about for league MVP. If that doesn’t rate well on your performance scale, then you are indeed being petty and irascible.

Mark, you are an a$$. the only way you could hate a person as much as you do is to love him a little bit. Favre may not always make the best decisions but his skill is unquestioned,as is his love for football, and desire to win.

Blaming the fumbles on him too, huh? Come on! Adrian Peterson lost the game! It would’ve been in the bag had the n.n. not fumbled in the red zone. Oh I’m sorry that was favre’s fault.

Mark – gimme a break – most people would have been in the hospital by the 2nd or 3rd quarter with the beating Farve took. The guy is tough as nails, and still nearly won with what was a poor performance overall by the Vikings, and a disaster of a performance by the Minnesota O Line
Farve played great all season – I hope he can give it one more try, but this time with some O linemen who can block.
By they way, where was Jared Allen in all of this – seemed invisible.

From the small town of Kiln, where he was raised, to the Sporting News recognizing Favre as one of the 100 “Good Guys” in sports.
At four years old Brett was hit in the head with a baseball bat! Brett Favre did not even cry!!
Favre claims if he ever did cry, he did it because he figured he was supposed to—not because it hurt.
When he wasn’t in school he was either playing sports, practicing for sports, helped him alot!.
Find out more about this great guy from this article I read about him!

Mark is a typcial bandwagon writer here in GA. A lot of bluster but little insight and less fact/reality. Brett Favre is one of the best. I personallly like Staubach & Montana better, and respect Bradshaw a lot. But Favre is in the top 5 – he broke two Montana playoff records last night. It was a shame that he lost the game in regulation, but you take the good & the bad; the only way Bradley would be right is if the Vikings went 5-11, and Favre really was a locker room cancer. But he walks the walk. Bradley should be terminated due to his utopian narcissism, but the AJC would rather stop delivery to Haralson County than make quality money saving decisions.

I won’t say he’s the most overrated. There’s too many other QB prospects out there for that title. I will totally agree though, Mark, on ESPN’s constant jabbering about the guy. It’s the media that makes you sick about him, not because of his accomplishments or near accomplishments, but the constant, “And in other news, Favre …….” every 10 minutes.

Despite my love and respect for Brett Favre, I love the article! You sound like you are speaking about someone you loved at one point. Feels like maybe Brett betrayed you somehow. It’s like you are talking about an ex. Hilarious! The only thing I would add is that The New Orleans Saints are quite talented, and they had an amazing season. I mean you could at least mention that we had 19 players score a TD this season. They will win the Superbowl! I believe in destiny, luck and shear odds.. my goodness, a true fan since 1976 and nothing so far! We have to win one before I die. Laissez bon temps roule!

You hatred seems to know no bounds. I cannot defend the interception. It would definitely make me look like an idiot. I can only surmize, that this is from the whole will/won’t he retire, which I also admit gets old. But talk about sychphants, Peyton can do no wrong. He in any commercial that will pay him, writers write about him like he is the second coming and all I heard this year was how he does this with no talent around him which is the biggest bunch of bullocks I have ever heard. Let’s trade Peyton to Buffalo and see how good he does. Brett does have a love affiar with the TV media, but the print media love affair with Peyton is no better.

Brett Farve was so dumb in the closing seconds it was absolutely incredible!. I couldnt believe what I was seeing. When I saw Farve throwing the football, I looked at the tv and I wanted to throw a brick at the tv. Farve had no business throwing the football, when he could have taken a knee, andd watched his field goal kicker make a 56 yarder sending the Vikings into the superbowl.

Adrian Peterson is not overrated. Adrian just had a bad day. It happens to everyone, whether they are a football player or not. Adrian put the ball on the carpet three times and it cost his team a chance to play in the superbowl. Its not just Brett Farve’s fault the Vikings lost. There is enough blame to go around. Its mainly Farve and Peterson, though. They are the two main guys who blew it for the Vikings. In spite of it all though Farve could have won it in the closing seconds had he hobbled for 10-15 yards to give his field goal kicker a chance to win the damn football game.

The Saints were careless with the football as well and they were nervous. Their vaunted offense only collected about 70 yards in the second half and they failed on several plays of 3rd down and 1s and 3rd and 2s which is usually a cakewalk for them. They were afraid to lose and it showed. They also were sloppy with the football as well. IN MY MIND BOTH TEAMS DESERVED TO LOSE BUT THE SAINTS WEREN’T AS CARELESS AND THUS WILL BE PLAYING FOR THE BIG PRIZE.
