ESPN Rumor Central: Tuberville ready to move … to UGA?

File this one under Silly Season Speculation, but I present it in the interest of keeping you, dear readers, fully informed. And that’s why I’m here! To serve! To bring every noteworthy nugget to you who Need To Know!

OK, where was I?

Oh, yeah. From the Rumor Central of ESPN.com’s Insiders comes this: “TTU job a stepping stone for Tuberville?” (Link requires registration.) And you’ll never guess where those presumed stones are said to lead.

For your edification, I present the item in its entirety:

“Will Tommy Tuberville retire at Texas Tech? Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman sure doesn’t think so. Tuberville has yet to sign his contract, and the buyout he has to pay if he were to break his contract isn’t high enough — in Bohls’ opinion, anyway.

“[Writes Bohls:] ‘Personally, I would have had Tuberville agree to a larger buyout. After all, he probably would be the Tennessee coach if he had waited a week instead of saying yes to Texas Tech.’

“Tuberville seems very happy to be at Tech and to be coaching again. But you do have to wonder, if he has success in Lubbock and a lucrative SEC job were to open up in the next couple of seasons, whether he’d be able to turn that offer down. Disgruntled LSU and Georgia fans might have to start paying the Red Raiders a little more attention.”

Well, now. That’s a mighty big leap from a mighty small item in Mr. Bohls’ column, but it does illustrate … something. We all know that Tuberville enjoys being courted — ask Ole Miss fans, or Auburn fans, or Arkansas fans — but it wasn’t long ago that Georgia could never been included in any discussion of a school that might soon be seeking a new coach.

But I should stipulate that any disgruntlement with Mark Richt has eased. Most UGA fans are excited about Todd Grantham as defensive coordinator — some weren’t happy with the search, but they’ll get over that if Grantham delivers — and they’ll get excited again on Signing Day. The heat on Miles, who infamously blew the Ole Miss game, is much higher than on Richt. (LSU fans are going nuts over Nick Saban winning big at Alabama.)

No, this isn’t your father’s SEC, or even your uncle’s. Phillip Fulmer was gone from Tennessee a year after playing for the conference title. Tuberville himself was out at Auburn two seasons after going 11-2. Things can happen quickly, sure. That said …

I don’t see any way Georgia is looking for a coach next December. LSU, maybe. Not UGA.

(P.S. I do think Mr. Bohls — nice guy, good writer — has it right when he says Tuberville would be sitting in Knoxville today if he’d waited a week. Which would mean Tuberville would have coached three different SEC schools, which I don’t think anyone has ever done. Though Bobby Petrino will give it a go.)

Hiistory Says 2010 Big Year for UGA

January 26th, 2010
10:43 am

If you like common sense, you know 2010 will be a good year for Georgia.

If you don’t have common sense, this won’t make sense to you.

Every time Coach Richt had a bad year in the SEC, 2001 & 2006, he rebounded with a #2 ranked finish the next season.

The last time Georgia had a recruinting class ranked as high as this one by ESPN, #4, Georgia finished #2 the next year.

Lakotas, Gergia’s new DB Coach, held South Carolina to 7 points. Charlie Strong’s defense gave up 14 to South Carolina.

I think if Richt can go 9-3 this season( which is very doable) and then go through another 4 year stretch where the Dawgs average 11 wins and are always in the title hunt like they were in 2002-2005; then Richt can stay as long as he likes. But he hasn’t been around long enough nor has his program done enough nationally for him to start mailing it in like he has the last 2 years or so. Once Richt got that big contract after the 2007 season, he hasn’t been nearly as hungry and boy can you see the difference on the field.

If there continues to be struggles at QB; if they continue to get blown out in rivalry games, and if they finish below 8-4, then UGA needs to seriously look into finding another head coach. With that being said, would Tuberville really be a step up? He had that nice season in 2004, but other than that he’s really been pretty mediocre.

UNC basketball is going through exactly what happened to the dawgs this year. You can’t lose your 3 best players at pivotal positions to the pros and expect their backups to come in with little to no game experience and perform at a high level. You just can’t. If your a coach or a reasonable person you understand that.

Mark Richt is not on the hot seat and has never been on the hot seat. NO Body has ever in the Bulldog nation has ever thought so. The administration, fans, players, and anybody that has anything to do with UGA LOVES Mark Richt. The only ones that think, try to make, or want him on the hot seat are UT fans and AJC reporters. I don’t know…Tubs aggressively pursued the TTU job, and that job’s stature has risen a lot in recent years. But anything’s possible. College football is the undisputed king in the SEC. In Texas they love football in general, but college? No more than pro football, and definitely less than the local high school team (still don’t get that).

Grantham better pan out or all this tripe people like to write about Richt’s record at UGA, and his record versus other SEC coaches won’t amount to a bucket of warm pi$$. Richt knew he was on the hot seat and it doesn’t look to get any cooler. That’s why he broke down and finally canned old Willie. If Grantham bombs (I figure he will get a year’s grace period), Richt is a gonner no matter what. 2011 will be the year of reckoning. If UGA cans Richt, he’ll never be another head coach, at least where it counts.

So far as Tubberville goes, at least he had fairly decent success against FL in the recent past.

MARK,

I hate to remind you that there’s still a firemarkricht.net functioning. Another year like this past one, people will call for his head. Do you really think a new DC is going to take Georgia to the SEC Championship?

Georgia was 7th in the SEC in Total Defense (#38 in the NCAA) last year, behind Ala, Fla, SC, Miss, Tenn and LSU. Those are a lot of teams to pass to have a much
more successful year than last year.

Now you look at the offense, Bobo’s had the dawgs #8 in the SEC (75th in the NCAA), behind Fla, Aub, Ark, Ala, Miss, Tenn, and Miss St. I find it hard to believe he will do that much better with a red shirt Fr. QB, even with an improved running game. The offense looks to be in worse shape than defense.

If you look at Richt’s record from 2001 to 2009, he did better from 2001-2004, since 2005 his record has gotten worse, I was just wondering if the fact that he is coaching now against Meyer, Saban, Miles, Spurrier, (Kiffin left), and now he has the young hungry Dooley coming to town. Just food for thought.

One other thing about Grantham, if he is the best thing since sliced bread as a DC,
do you really think that Urban Meyer would not have gone out and gotten him? Florida also filled all their open positions (4) before Richt filled one.

And, remember this, every major issue Richt has encountered during his tenure, he has dealt with those issues and made the corrections necessary. Time management, play calling, Willie Martinez. He’s known to do the right thing. Sometimes it takes time for him to come to those determinations, but he generally comes to the right conclusions. All in all, I would hope Coach Richt ignores these blogs and knows that a vast majority of fans out there support him 100%….”

Gators Great in 2012

January 27th, 2010
11:52 am

Gators iwll be competing again in 2012, 2009 won’t completely destory them. They’ll rebuild with a good class. They’ll need to get another defensive coordinator in 2011, Edwards will be fired, was ranked #24 in scoring defense at Miami in 2009, #18 against the rush. Edwards in 13 years in the NFL had a LOSING season 10 years.

Miami went 1-15 in 2007 with Edawards running the LB’s.

Edwards is ok with losing.

Gators will go 7-5 or 8-4 & lose in 2009 to Georgia, Bama, LSU, FSU, and maybe even Apallacian.

Gator Upset Alert

January 27th, 2010

Appalachian St. went 11-2 and BARELY lost in the Championship.

They’ll be able to score on Edawards and will win this game in 2009.

What impresses You Most About Grantham?

January 27th, 2010

I’d like to get some feedback on what impresses you guys most about Grantham:
1- Helped 3 different teams have best year in 15 years (Browns, Colts, and Cowboys)
2- Coached up several Pro Bowlers
3- Saw 2 different teams have massive turnarounds Colts 3-13 to 13-3 in 1 years, Browns 4-10 to 10-6 in 1 year
4- Dallas Cowboys were #2 in scoring defense in 2009
5- Dallas Cowboys were #4 against the run in 2009
6- Dallas Cowboys were #7 in sacks in 2009
7- Dallas Cowboys were #27 in MOST penalized team in 2009
8- Grantham was offered the defensive coordinator job from Saban at Miami, note Saban runs #1 defense
9- Gratham was recommended for Georgia job by Will Muschamp–runs #2 defense
10- Trained under Frank Beamer and worked with Foster
11- Trained under Nick Saban
12- Hired by 3 of the best defensive minds in the NFL

January 27th, 2010

UGA detractors argue that “UGA is losing ground as a winning program. I say look at the “awful record” over the last 13 years for UGA and including with two different coaches. See? NO OTHER school, not Alabama, Florida or LSU or KY or SC or USC ( Southern Cal ) or Penn.State or Oklahoma or Texas or Nebraska or Michigan or the mighty, mighty OhioState Blindeyes have done this. THEY are not consistently a big time winner is how I see it using ony the various records. Case closed and school is dismissed.

To argue that UGA is not winning is like saying that Obama is a wonderfully, popular and successful President. We know both of these statements ( especially about Barry O ) are false.

Georgia fans will put up with Richt’s mediocrity for a few more years. They’re not bright enough to realize the Dawgs dominance in the SEC is over. They will be 5th or 6th in the SEC for some time. Richt can’t fire up his team and the prayers aren’t working.

Meyer--Mr. 5-3 in the SEC, 40% of the time

January 27th, 2010
7:15 pm

Speaking of Mediocrity, Meyer will go at LEAST 5-3 in the SEC gain, since he has 2 out 5 times, 40% of his seasons.

Coach Richt has only had a 5-3 or worse season in the SEC twice in 9 years, or 22%.

Meyer is 2x more mediocre than Coach Richt.

Meyer didn't beat a top 10 team in 2009, will 2010 be different?

January 27th, 2010
7:21 pm

Meyer obviously is in a downswing and decline and has not beat a top 10 team since 2008.

Will 2010 be different? Unfortunately, no. As usual, he will onyl schedule 1 top 10 team, and that’s Bama, ranked #1 pre-season by ESPN, so it might be until 2012 intil Meyer beats s top 10 team.

Talk about mediocre.

Congrats to Coach Richt’s top 10 win against Ga Tech in 2009.

Why Gators Will Be Worse in 2010

January 27th, 2010
11:08 pm

2009-
Gators had #3 ranked defense, held other teams to less than 13 points a game. Charlie Strong proven defensive genius. Plus, 22 starters returned.
But? Couldn’t beat a top 10 team in 2009.

2010-
Gators lose Strong to Lousiville. Defense MUCH weaker–George Edwards clear #7 in the SEC (finished #24 in scoring defense in 2009 with Miami, went 1-15 with Miami in 2007, losing record 10 out of 13 NFL seasons). 5 starters gone on offense, 6 starters gone on defense. 4 coaches gone.

If Gators couldn’t beat a top 10 team witht Strong, without the #3 ranked defense, and 22 starters returning, how bad will they be in 2010 without Strong, with only 11 starters returning, and 4 coaches gone?
