ESPN Rumor Central: Tuberville ready to move … to UGA?

File this one under Silly Season Speculation, but I present it in the interest of keeping you, dear readers, fully informed. And that’s why I’m here! To serve! To bring every noteworthy nugget to you who Need To Know!

OK, where was I?

Oh, yeah. From the Rumor Central of ESPN.com’s Insiders comes this: “TTU job a stepping stone for Tuberville?” (Link requires registration.) And you’ll never guess where those presumed stones are said to lead.

For your edification, I present the item in its entirety:

“Will Tommy Tuberville retire at Texas Tech? Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman sure doesn’t think so. Tuberville has yet to sign his contract, and the buyout he has to pay if he were to break his contract isn’t high enough — in Bohls’ opinion, anyway.

“[Writes Bohls:] ‘Personally, I would have had Tuberville agree to a larger buyout. After all, he probably would be the Tennessee coach if he had waited a week instead of saying yes to Texas Tech.’

“Tuberville seems very happy to be at Tech and to be coaching again. But you do have to wonder, if he has success in Lubbock and a lucrative SEC job were to open up in the next couple of seasons, whether he’d be able to turn that offer down. Disgruntled LSU and Georgia fans might have to start paying the Red Raiders a little more attention.”

Well, now. That’s a mighty big leap from a mighty small item in Mr. Bohls’ column, but it does illustrate … something. We all know that Tuberville enjoys being courted — ask Ole Miss fans, or Auburn fans, or Arkansas fans — but it wasn’t long ago that Georgia could never been included in any discussion of a school that might soon be seeking a new coach.

But I should stipulate that any disgruntlement with Mark Richt has eased. Most UGA fans are excited about Todd Grantham as defensive coordinator — some weren’t happy with the search, but they’ll get over that if Grantham delivers — and they’ll get excited again on Signing Day. The heat on Miles, who infamously blew the Ole Miss game, is much higher than on Richt. (LSU fans are going nuts over Nick Saban winning big at Alabama.)

No, this isn’t your father’s SEC, or even your uncle’s. Phillip Fulmer was gone from Tennessee a year after playing for the conference title. Tuberville himself was out at Auburn two seasons after going 11-2. Things can happen quickly, sure. That said …

I don’t see any way Georgia is looking for a coach next December. LSU, maybe. Not UGA.

(P.S. I do think Mr. Bohls — nice guy, good writer — has it right when he says Tuberville would be sitting in Knoxville today if he’d waited a week. Which would mean Tuberville would have coached three different SEC schools, which I don’t think anyone has ever done. Though Bobby Petrino will give it a go.)

HA!HA!HA!HA! – Mark, one thing your story has made clear is that DAWG fans are Clueless…and 2nd rate!!! We LSU fans know the meaning of Championships (I DO MEAN BCS BullDoggy’s) and WE have been shouting at the top of our lungs to get rid of Les Miles and go get Tuberville! The man has flat outcoached every single coach in the SEC…period. Please remember that although he was at Auburn while Alabama was on probation he was still at the state’s NUMBER 2 school and Alabama is STILL on probation. Saban just knows how to coach the players Alabama has ALWAYS gotten. If Tuberville was at Alabama or LSU he’d have multiple BCS championships to his credit.

We Tiger fans down here on Da Bayou know the difference between a good coach and a great coach and I’ll take Great coaches like Saban and Tubby over good coaches like Richt and punk-azz Miles!! WHO DAT!!

Mark Bradley, you must be on the take. Your articles are not about news and the intent is to influence recruiting. I have heard this by others often. Is this how you stay on with AJC? Coach Mark Richt isn’t planning on quitting. He just fired his good friend because he wasn’t getting the job done. He is a very competitive coach who is all about winning. He loves the Lord and so do I, but he has a job to do and he is all about doing it. You are a pathetic excuse for a sports writer.

ga gator – I agree Fla. owns us right now. Coach Richt has won the SEC and the SEC Championship. I agree the ultimate goal is the NC, but realistcally the true fan knows how tough that is and the true fan doesn’t judge a successful program by how many NC you have won. And don’t give me that owe you don’t want to be the best crap. Sure you want to be the best and I have felt like except for this year we had a chance to win the East and the SEC. You could look at our Spring game last year and tell we had some issues. Florida has been on a roll and can they stay there I don’t know, but when you lose people like Percy Harvin and Tebow it will catch up with you. all teams go through it. Florida was very fortunate to win the East this year with the other teams being down. Timing is everything

Georgia didn't win the East in 07'

That Kirk Herbstreit hater is the same guy that says Kirk himself cost the Dawgs a shot at the National title in 2007. In reality it was the South Carolina loss and the Vol beatdown that put them in a tie in the East and since Tennessee beat the Dawgs the tiebreaker went to them. No East title, No SEC Championship appearance or title = No National title shot. Now what in the world did a guy from ESPN have to do with those facts? Not a thing

Tommy Tuberville is a good coach. But I hope to see Richt at UGA for a very long time. He is a good Christian man. He builds good character in his players. Richt just needs to realize he needs to put the best players on the field instead of the boys who are loyal to him. I understand it shows good character in him but really its about winning. He needs to start putting the best players on the field I don’t care if they are seniors or freshman. Best players who work hard and give the DAwgs the best chance to win should see playing time! Go DAwgs!

Mark,

Agree that it’s a long shot that Tub winds up at UGA. Must be a slow news day.

Can’t see anything happening anytime soon but I can see Tubbs taking Richt’s job in 2 years. If Richt continues to lose to his biggest rival in Florida and if UGA generally just doesn’t do well over the next 2 years then its quite plausible that Tubbs could take over for Richt.

Tubbs has done the one thing that Richt can’t seem to do and he’s done it with far lesser talent. He has dominated his biggest rival in beating Bama 6 in a row and he also handled Florida with Tebow for 2 years in a row. All in all he had one bad season.

In 2004, one year removed from a national title, would anyone have imagined that a couple years later that Saban would be at Alabama of all places?

Let me reiterate: I can’t see Tuberville coming to Athens, either. That was kind of my point. I don’t see Georgia needing a head coach anytime soon.

UGA would love to have Tuberville, who knows how to win big games. Their fans are getting tired of richt choking in the big games and going to minor bowls—if they could get tuberville in a year or two, Ga would pay some nice change.

Both teams are tough. The 2 best D’s by a mile. In the East, you have Grantham, the guy Saban wanted for his DC, in the West you have Saban, another defensive mastermind. The difference will be in the offensive side of the ball. Bama has no answer for Richt’s offensive genius.

It’s gonna be great to see the SEC giants going at it.

Georgia will overpower Saban. But there will be some great battles.

What’s more likely, is if Florida goes 5-7 this year, Meyer or Addazio will be fired, and Tuberville can take over at Florida. If Meyer or Addazio goes 5-7, Tuberville’s in, Meyer or Addazio is out.

More than likely, Meyer will not return, just being straight up. Addazio will lose6 or 7 games, and head back to coaching high school, and Richt will be coaching till he’s 80 like Paterno.

We don’t want to face grantham, we’re in a rebuilding year, we’d like to continue to schedule Florida International, Chalreston Southern, and Troy, instead of Georgia. The next head coach if there ever is one to replace Mark Richt will be the oc of texas and former bulldog muschamp . I think he will be a great head coach some day anf if the job does ever come open he could very well be the next coach at uga. But i do think coach Richt is doing a wonderful job . great job coach keep up the good work .

The more I read georgia blogs the more dillusional I see georgia fans are. Florida is loaded next year and years to come. we will beat them next year at home, but I am worried having to play them twice and we are loaded as well. saban and Meyer will own this conference for a long time. It’s amatter of time before it’s bye-bye Richt.

After Meyer quits Next Month...What's Next?

January 25th, 2010
9:15 pm

We all know what’s going on. Meyer says he’s gonna coach, recruits sign on, then he says his “tests” said he is under too much stress to coach.

Who do ya’ll think will replace Meyer after he quits next month? Will they stay with Addazio the High School head coach? I don’t think so. Probably bring back Spurrier. If not, maybe get Paul Johnson, since both Florida and Ga Tech both run the spread high school style offense.

After Meyer quits Next Month...What's Next?

January 25th, 2010

Oh I know Gator fan, you think he won’t quit, let me guess.

I bet you thought he wouldn’t quit back in December right?

I’m guessing the other 7 teasm he quit on every one to five years didn’t think he would quit either.

Unfortunately, they didn’t want to reconcile themselves with Meyer’s history as a professional quitter.

If there’s on thing Urban Meyer is good at, it’s quitting. He holds the record for quitting more than coach in SEC histroy, 7th time now he has quit.

So, after he quits next month, what’s next?

Ranking the SEC 2010 Defensive Coordinators....

January 25th, 2010
10:16 pm

Saban floundered at the highest level. His winnning % at the Dophins was worse than Wenstedt, Johnson, or Shula.

Grantham has thrived at the highest level. Turning around 2 different NFL teams in 1 year:
Colts from 3-13 to 13-3, Browns from 4-10 to 10-6.

Browns went 2-14 after Grantham left. Miami wasn’t impacted much after Saban left.

A part of the #2 lowest scoring defense, #4 against rush. Saban never did that in the NFL.

bOTTOM lINE:
Even Nick Saban thought Grantham could do a better job as DC than him–he offered him the job in Miami INSTEAD OF RUNNING THE DEFENSE HIMSELF.
