Audience participation: Got a question for Todd Grantham?

I’m headed to Athens on Friday for Todd Grantham’s first media session. (In case you’ve been living on a satellite, he’s Georgia’s new defensive coordinator.) I have some questions in mind –  “When you were with Dallas, did you ever meet Jessica Simpson?” — but I thought I’d be interactive about this and ask if any of y’all had any.

Understand: I’m not promising I’ll ask them all, or even a half-dozen. But I’ll try to squeeze in one or two, and I’ll let you know what he says in response. And I, being my generous self, will give you credit.

I’m leaving about 9 a.m., and the session is at 11. So if there’s something you’d like to offer — “Coach TG, will recruiting change now that Georgia will be playing the 3-4?” — please avail yourselves ASAP. As always, I thank you in advance.

Mark, please ask the following….

Coach: “What makes your schemes and blitz packages different than what we see at say Alabama?
” How much does the personal dictate the packages?
And how long do you anticipate the learning curve to be?”

Yeh, Im sure he would dance around the later, but the former two could get a response.

Other than for the money, why would you abandon coaching in the NFL for the NCAA, and specifically, the University of Georgia? Why do you see it as a step up on your coaching resume? And what will you deem as a success in achieving that step up? Does Jerry Jones’ awarding a three year extension to Wade Phillips confirm your decision to leave, or make you wish you had stayed at Dallas. And finally, where do you see yourself in three years?

That ought to get the doubts started amongst us dawgs.

Here you go, MB:

Will Richard Samuel move to weak side linebacker? He ain’t exactly shooting up the depth chart at RB. Also, how much will young Dawgs like Brandon Smith and Boykin improve in their pass coverage skills? Who will step up at DE? Brandon Wood? Justin (could be an OLB) Houston?

How can the 3-4 contain opponents’ spread offense? Does CTG have a good game plan in place for uncommon offenses like the triple wing of GT?

Detractors of the 3-4 believe that this alignment leaves your defense susceptible to the run. How does CTG plan to contain the great running backs UGA will face in the SEC?

Is Travis Jones a candidate to join the UGA defensive coaching staff? If so, will an announcement be delayed until the Saints are eliminated from the NFL playoffs (or play in Super Bowl…whatever happens first)?

What does CTG think of the strength and conditioning program at UGA? Will he get rid of Coach Van Halanger, if Richt allows?

How long will it take him to turn UGA into a defensive dynasty in college football?

Does the new DC know how to bark? Some folks don’t. My cousin, a lifelong UGA fan barks like a chihuahua. It’s quite sad.

Does it matter what his defenses do? They will no doubt be better than a Martinez defense. Every down Georgia would line up in a plain Jane defense with personnel lining up in a certain position and no movement. Offense always seemed to know what defensive scheme Georgia was in except for Georgia Tech. It should be fun watching the Line Backers move up to the line between the interior lineman outside wide blitzing or faking the blitz and dropping into underneath coverage. This will at least keep opposing OC’s and QB’s guessing. Willie’s defense never made the offense guess.

Speaking of plain Jane. Bobo’s offensive play calling. And I mean sometimes downright offensive play calling. Does anybody think that he can start a game without 10 straight screen passes next year. Maybe, just maybe throw a ball 100 yards down the sideline to AJ Green and let the defense know that they need to spread their defense because you are going to get the ball to your best play maker early and often. Most of the offenses problems were not Bobo’s fault due to a lot of turnovers but there were way too many times were the offense was MIA for long periods of time last year due to his play calling. This was a topic of discussing by game announcers during more than one game last year. One announcer stated that were no secrets to what Georgia is going to do on offense. This has to change this year or they should begin the search of an OC. I think everybody noticed how the offense improved when Mark Richt pulled Bobo out of the sky box and put him on the sideline closer to him. Go Dawgs!

I’d like you to ask him:

“What would you consider to be the major sources of Georgia’s defensive problems over the past couple seasons? How will you address them?”

We all have our opinions on the matter (DBs out of position, poor tackling, bad schemes, strength and conditioning, field position/circumstance, etc) but I’d like to hear how the coach tasked with restoring our defense assesses our current situation and recent performance. I’m sure that was one of the first questions Richt asked, so he probably has an answer.

They talk about NFL defenses being predicated on matchups. College defenses seem to be predicated on schemes. Is he going to teach our D how to exploit matchups and shut down other teams stars? Basically take away offensive threats posed by other team. Also, diversity in play calling. With Willie Martinez we constantly ran a zone coverage (bend but don’t break) but that had little success with teams that know how to work around it, I want multiple looks and blitzes.

I think I have a good question. We all know Dallas’s Def Line was very good this year. My question for him is how does he get so much from his 3-4 def with a 295 pound Nose Tackle/Guard when he was with Dallas (Jay Ratliff listed at 295)? Usually 330 or bigger, just a thought on that to see if we already have DT’s on our roster that can play that position with success.

Mark,

You will need to provide some background info in regards to this question when you ask it:

Coach, how willing are you to change up your base defense or your defensive game plan when it appears that the offense is showing you something completely different than what you prepared for? Are you willing to make adjustments on the fly, or can you be pretty stubborn in sticking to what you want to do, regardless of the performance on the field?

And of course, Mark, the reason why I ask this question, is because how many times did Soft Willie Martinez refuse to do ANYTHING different when second-tier QBs like Eric Ainge, John Parker Wilson, or a fourth-tier QB like Jon Crompton, picked apart his soft zones? How many times did we see him refuse to make ANY adjustments to his base defense or his gameplan?

TOO MANY TIMES!!!

I’d like to make sure that Coach Grantham not only has a brain between his ears, but that he actually USES it!!!

There have been a lot of rumblings lately about the strength and conditioning program at UGA being sub-par, with supposed NFL sources tell Buck Belue (per his blog) that Georgia players are known as not being “NFL strong”. Coach Grantham:

Do you know what the inside of a football helmet looks like? I’m sure you do, but we’d like to find out on Saturdays. i.e. Could we see some heads rolling?

Would you be opposed to our players competing to see who puts the opposing team’s
mouthpiece(s) on the ground first? Would you mind encouraging this?

Since these guys are pretty much right out of high school, how do you plan on preparing them with the fundamentals. Wrapping up tackles, reading offenses, being disciplined, avoiding the costly penalties, and for goodness sakes, giving up the big plays.

Have you ever milked a cow before? We recruit top notch players and while the college and pro game differs quite a bit, so many of our players excel at the next level while only being mediocre to on par at college. Other than the money, and I know it is a big motivating factor in the pros, how do you prepare and “milk” the best out of a college player? Would your NFL experience guide them to becoming better at college and still excel at the pros?

You don’t like to ride scooters while drinking, slap our defensive players, put people with concussions in dark rooms, or go to strip clubs do you?

When you do push ups, do you push yourself up or push the earth down?

I hope you love your mom and grandmother(s), some of our recruits do and what our mom’s and grandmothers say, we follow.

Hey chop block enthusiast,
“Please ask Coach Grantham how he will deal with illegal chop blocking techniques once the knees of his three down lineman are taken out”.
Tech never gets flagged for “chop blocking” because they never do it. It’s not a penalty to quickly fire out and take out the knees of a LB or down lineman, AH! It’s a technique our 2 star, undersized linemen have to use from time to time. Ask Searles. Our guys don’t have the enough strength to stay on their blocks long enough to chop block. Hahaha. What a typical dog. Hahahaha.
Chop blocking:
If an offensive player is engaged in a block of a defender, then another offensive player blocks the same defender below the waist, this is called a chop block. A fifteen yard penalty is assessed against the offense.
Maybe some of you guys should read a lot more than you write.
Hahahahahaha

If you look back at the 2007 win vs Florida, UGA used a 3-4 set through alot of that game

3-4 defenses are well-suited to stop all versions of the spread.

Even Tech’s option will have a much harder time with a 3-4 because the linemen will have fewer guys to able to “cut block” on the line of scrimmage. More people with their heads up and seeing the ball.

That’s when I go to my dog house and hide my face. Those young women need to behave better. If they are running this state we are in trouble. UGA FOOTBALL DEFINES UNDERACHIEVEMENT

January 22nd, 2010
9:33 am

Most would agree that UGA has the second best recruiting pool in the SEC. In the last 25+ years the Bulldogs have captured but two SEC Championships. Many many other programs have accomplished so much more in that same time span with less recruiting advantages. Therefore is it fair to call UGA one of the most UNDERACHIEVING programs in college football? Why do you think so many people running the show and so many fans accept this? Do you think the Bulldogs will ever reach their true potential and stay there? How can this be done?

That has been my observation.

2. Will you drive it on campus at night with the football team?
3. Do you have Ed Tolley on speed dial yet?
4. If no, why not?

6. How does it feel to be overpaid? Good huh?

Will he recruit nationally for the top defensive players instead of just recruiting the southeast? It has been said that UGA always recruited the top players and when I look at the top players in the country I don’t see UGA offering a lot of the players. There are great players in Calif. , Texas, Oregon, and Ohio. I’m not knocking any of the players we have or getting but in certain positions there are better players out there. The linebackers could use a lot of help and taller more skilled cornerbacks would help greatly since most receivers are 6″2″ or taller.

Ask him if his defense will be similar to the one run by Bud Foster, and what influence Bud foster has on his defensive philosophy.

I like the prize and ticket idea. But instead of to spring game tix why not say UT game or Tech game this year. Sure the AJC has some connections for such. Even better how bout the SEC Championship game watching the Dawgs in person.

Here, if you’re inclined, is the fruit of our audience-participation exercise.

I managed to work in three of yours, plus my own about Ms. Simpson. Grantham, I can report, was a great sport about it all.

Thanks again for all the help. I, as ever, am in your debt.

Yellow Fuzz – Read Nick Saban’s opinion on chop blocks as a part of football. I think you will be suprised at his comment.

No, I’m in total agreement with coach Saban. Maybe YOU out to read up a bit little man!

It’s been “behind the foul pole of the FIRST base line” for 2 years. But security (and my girlfriend) wouldn’t let me set up there this year due to these blogs. They thought someone may get 1eyejacked and they were probably right.

Hey Todd, Mark Bradley with the Atlanta paper. Anybody ever told you you look like Larry Flint? I imagine it was easy enough to find out who we want to beat. Question is- How are we gonna do it? Shouldn’t we stay away from being selective and want to beat them all? Jessica has had issues with weight. Had she ever offered you any advice. Can you get me some good seats?
Just pick and choose out of those Marky Mark. He may be around for awhile if we’re lucky and I don’t want Y’all to get off on the wrong foot.
