Watching Lane Kiffin’s wretched introduction at Southern Cal last night — delayed 45 minutes by traffic, it should have been canceled to spare everyone involved– the thought occurred: “This guy is the biggest rat I’ve ever seen.”
Then, a bit later, another thought: “Wait a minute, son. Didn’t we in Atlanta happen across a rodent of our own not long ago?”
Well, yeah. His name: Bobby Petrino. He fled the Falcons in same harum-scarum manner that Kiffin left K-Town. And that terrible memory got me to thinking: “Kiffin or Petrino — who’s the bigger rat?” Here’s where I attempt to answer myself.
Category: Truthfulness. Petrino reaffirmed to Arthur Blank the day before he headed over the Ozarks, “You’ve got yourself a coach.” According to Tennessee AD Mike Hamilton, Kiffin at least informed him last weekend that he’d be interested in the USC job. Bigger lying rat: Petrino.
Category: Manliness. Petrino left without facing his players. He had a type-written note left in their lockers instead. Kiffin at least addressed his players. Mayhem nearly ensued, but at least he showed his creepy face. Bigger cowardly rat: Petrino.
Category: Timeliness. Petrino was gone by sundown the day after his team lost to New Orleans on Monday night. Kiffin didn’t flee the Smokies until the next day. Bigger lamming rat: Petrino.
Category: Shamelessness. Not 24 hours after leaving the Georgia Dome as coach of the Falcons, Petrino was captured on live TV calling the Hogs alongside Razorback cheerleaders. Kiffin somehow resisted the urge to ride into his Southern Cal press briefing atop Traveler, the equine mascot of Troy. Bigger shameless rat: Petrino.
Category: Spousal involvement. Becky Petrino joined her husband to lead cheers. Layla Kiffin did not lead any cheers, at least not on-camera. Bigger familial rat: Petrino.
Category: Obliviousness. According to those Falcons folks who knew Petrino well (and there weren’t many), he was stunned his abrupt departure elicited such venom. Kiffin maintained Tennessee fans were upset he was leaving because he’d done such a great job. Bigger tin-eared rat: Kiffin.
Category: Staying power. Petrino coached the Falcons for 11 months. Kiffin coached the Volunteers for 14 months. Bigger fickle rat: Petrino.
Overall: You’ll note that Petrino is the winner, if that’s the proper word, in six of the seven categories. Which would seem to make him the landslide choice as the rat of all rats, would it not? Uh, no. Forget categories, I say. Look instead at the big picture. (At least Petrino can coach.) Alongside Kiffy, all other rodents must bow. King Rat: Kiffin.

PETRINO IS THE BIGGER RAT HANDS DOWN. Any coach that cannot face his players and tell them that he’s leaving is pathetic. He asked those players to sacrifice for him and then he doesn’t even has the courtesy to face them and leaves a hand written note. That’s the ultimate height of unprofessionalism and cowardice

Hey Bradley, you forgot that Kiffin finished the season and actually coached the bowl game unlike Brian Kelly.
I will never understand why coaches get vilified like this. Kiffin was offerd the same job for a lot more money. There isn’t a person alive who wouldn’t have done the same thing. As fans, we get upset when coaches don’t show loyalty to colors like white and whatever they call the orange color in Knoxville. We forget that Kiffin is an employee and is only loyal to green. If UT offered him 1 million dollars more than USC, he would still be there.
Bradley, if you started at the AJC today, and tomorrow another paper called you and said “come work for us for 25% more money”, would you even spend a full second considering it?

I don’t blame Kiffen for leaving since it was well known that USC is his dream job and he has roots in CA. If you look at the big picture you can’t blame him for wanting to go back home and i really think that he would’ve stay at UT forever if he hadn’t landed the USC job. However, Petrino left an NFL team for a middling SEC team and will probrably leave again soon. The disingenious drifter takes this one by a landslide. Hand the big rat “Petrino” a hunk of Provolone and Cheddar for the Grand prize

January 14th, 2010

I am tickled to see the faces on some of the metro Atlanta kids that either play now for UT or were committed to play for them. Priceless it is. They BOUGHT IN to a very unstable program and with the police blotter and the NCAA scandal going on, UT is goning to be in deep T for a good long while.
They had it coming.
UGA? Well, all we need is a mid tier up and coming D coach and his subordinate staff and we are off and running again. Cycles cause these things to happen and UGA at 8-5 just underwent a down cycle but we are on the ups again withthe returning talent. We will be fine and come October, early November the record will reveal it.
If UGA only goes to the Citrus or maybe the Cotton every 3rd or fourth year and maybe play for all the SEC marbles every 3rd or 4th or 5th year ………….fine with the grads. If we were to win the SEC, then all else will fall into place. SEC title would be nice by 2011 or 2012.

Another excuse Kiffin has is youth. There is a brashness that comes with youth. He reminds me a bit of Jim Mora, Jr., whose father was also a coach and who thinks he knows more than he does. But it is understandable why, and time will humble and mature both of them. Also, Kiffin coached through the end of the season and faced his players, which means a lot. A school can fire a coach, a coach can leave a school. The big mystery to me is why USC hired him.

remember MB…..Blank fired Reeves after 13th game of the season. Same number of games Petrino coached before leaving that year. Blank promised Petrino he would not meddle, but lied about that and continued his meddling ways. Blank promised Petrino that his foster son Vick was innocent and would be acquitted and available to play for Petrino and he was NOT. Petrino saw a sinking ship with a scallywag at the helm and decided Arkansas was a better job. ( it is ) IF Petrino coaches rest of the season then he misses out on the SEC job. I dont see why Blank is not a RAT for not letting Reeves finish the season? Blank wanted a new coach after 13 games….Petrino wanted a new job after 13 games and they both did whatever it took to get what they wanted, and everyone is better off now that Petrino left. Petrino and Falcons were a bad fit and Petrino figured that out before Blank did. And I still say Lame Kiffin is a bigger rat than both Petrino & Blank. ( but not Vick )

I have to say that the rate the rat game is a tough one! This episode tells me two thing. One, that Tennessee went after someone that was not a real coach yet, and that definitley was upwardly mobile. Somewhere in there, they missed that part. Two, the USC program went down about 12 notches in 3 hours. It also sounds like Ed Ogreman comitted some more violations, and all of Kool and the Gang have no respect for the NCAA rules. Lane is the Scarecrow from the Wizard of OZ
Petrino, I think he knew he was over his head with the Pro Game, but had no courage to try and succeeed. Petrinon is the Cowardly Lion.

It has become quite popular among the AJC columnists to bash and take jabs at Mark Richt. So when something like this happens, I wonder if people realize how good UGA has it. Besides the fact that CMR is a proven winner who has taken the UGA program to it’s greatest sustained period of success, he is a gracious, humble, classy, and stable guy. My guess is he will be at UGA as long as UGA wants him. You can’t say the same thing about many other legitimate big-time coaches in college football.

come on Dawgs97 ! Schultz is a much bigger “Kiffin hole” than MB. Schultz is ultra-lib anti fishing and hunting and IF MB is a libtard, he is wise enuff to keep it OUT of the sports section and focus on the sports related issues at hand…..Sure MB can be kinda smug, but at least MB HAS some humility…Schultz is a pompous, failed humorist with a political agenda and the attitude that “I am always the smartest person in the room”. Finally MB is more well rounded in his sports knowledge.

Here is another factor to consider. Petrino really got a bum deal coming in to the Falcons organization. He was coming in to coach the team led by the electrifying Michael Vick. When the whole Dog fighting thing happened the organization collapsed on itself. Schaub was gone as a backup and bad attitudes were everywhere. Not to say Petrino wasn’t a Jackass, but under those circumstances not many men wouldn’t tuck the tail and run under those circumstances. Kiffen was handed the TN Vols who if you ask me in any average season is a top SEC program that could whip the sox of of anything those west coast boys can throw at us. USC is a top program for where they play. But they are unproven against the top teams in the SEC. I think they prefer to keep it that way.
Yea Pertino has no backbone and told his players in a note. But the NFL is business and the players a paid grown men. At the college levels the game is about heart and emotion. they are kids at this point. You HAVE to tell them. I hate Petrino. I hated Kiffen before he did this and now even more. I am not a TN fan for the record. But this guy just busted a deuce all over the SEC.

By far, Petrino is the biggest loser. He quit on the Falcons during the season with 1 or 2 games left to play. At least Kiffin wasn’t looking for another job. I think he would be there now IF the USC did not open up. You can’t blame for taking a better job. I can’t believe I am saying this because I hate Tennessee and Kiffin. Regardless, people will talk about loyalty but think about it. Many of you may have put countless hours into your job. When job cuts happen, do you think your company will look out for you? Probably not. There’s no loyalty in business.

This is simple, Petrino left a pro team in the middle of the season that wasn’t going anywhere and the players were paid.
Kiffin left after a decent first season, screwing over all the kids who committed to play for him, who will likely never earn a salary from football. And having Orgeron call the UT recruits to get them to switch to USC while telling his current team he was leaving, well that’s just awful

There are so many awful things (Iraq,Afghanistan,Haiti) going on in the world today it’s hard to beilieve that anybody is interested in Petrino or Kiffin. It’s obvious that neither of them has any character, but is it their fault anymore than the system itself? College football has morphed into something very ugly. They start recruiting kids when they are in junior high school. They are showered with accolades and equipment from companies that would do anything to have their company logo on display. Kids who are good athletes grow up thinking that they are somehow “special” and that the rules that apply to other kids don’t apply to them. They don’t bother to take advantage of educations that they could never afford otherwise. They just want to put in their three years and grab the big NFL or NBA money. But if they happen to sustain a career-ending injury in college, they are cast aside like so much garbage.
Coaches like Petrino and Kiffin are football whores who peddle themselves to any pro or college team that is willing to meet their absurd salary requirement, and when a better offer comes along they walk away better off than they were before, regardless of whether they have a contract and regardless if they have been successful in their previous job or, as in Lane Kiffin’s case, if they have really done anything at all. All in the name of winning a Super Bowl or BCS Championship.

Category: Immediate future of the program. Because Petrino was a rat, the Falcons were/are in a much better situation. It will probably take longer than it did for the Falcons to recover, but methinks UT will be better off in the long run as well. Program better off due to rat behavior: Falcons.

Kiffin wins the “award.” Petrino showed no class and dumped on highly paid professionals. The Petrino mistake was corrected with a good hire immediately following. Kiffin, however, dumped on an entire program by leaving two weeks before national signing day which could set UT back for a few years. Unlike what Kiffin said, because this year’s recuting class will probably be a disaster, he has left the program in MUCH worse shape than he found it. I never thought I’d say it, but I feel sorry for UT.

Need a category on nearness of Draft/Recruiting Day. By leaving three weeks before signing day, Kiffin has guaranteed that UT has a very rough recruiting year which is in direct contrast to the #6 ranked class before his leaving was announced. This could alter UT for at least the next three to four years!!! Petrino would not have been involved nearly as deeply with the Falcons draft as Kiffin was to UT recruiting and indeed the Falcons have certainly won two consecutive years without him. UT will not be as fortunate and thus Kiffin’s leaving is likely by far to have hurt his former team the worse.

I will not argue that Kiffin did not handle this well, but, before we all go off the deep end with assertions and accusations…
1) We do not KNOW if he can coach or not. The body of work is NOT large enough to make that determination. We DO know his father can coach (he proved that with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers), and the fact that his father was part of the deal MAY have been the reason he got the Tennessee job to begin with.
2) Tennessee knew what they were getting when they hired the man. If they did not know, then it is their OWN FAULT for failing to do the proper due diligence during the hiring process. Besides, as noted above, they were not just getting Lane, they were also getting Monty.
3) Tennessee has NOTHING to cry about, because they royally screwed over a man in Fulmer who proved his loyalty AND competence time and again, won the SEC East as late as 2007, and yet got kicked out into the cold because he was not winning on par with Urban Meyer, Mark Richt and Nick Saban. This is CLEARLY a case of what goes around, comes around.
FINALLY, let’s be honest here: If YOU were the head football coach of Tennessee and YOU got offered a job at a clearly BETTER football program for a LOT more money in your HOME state, would YOU not jump at the chance??
I liked the "Traveler" the horse analogy...

Supes, It was up to Auburn’s AD to fire or speak to Tubberville.
Petrino had a moment of stupidity for taking the Falcons job. Good to see he recovered. Really? why take a job with a QB you can’t fire and will not run your system combined with a program that has a history of failure and bad personnel decisions.
Lane is a jerk but not for leaving for his dream job.
Hamilton and UT were stupid for only having a $800k buyout on Lane’s contract. What was Lane supposed to do? Turn down his dream job because he had only been at UT 1 year?

Tough Call here. Petrino was a coward more than a rat, he snuck out of the Dome and boarded the next plane out to call the hogs, whatever the Falcons are in a much better place without him. Kiffin is a rat, he looked 18 year old players in the face and begged them to help rebuild a struggling program only to turn his back to them when the opportunity arose. For that, he is a rat and a liar, what do recruits have to hold onto anymore, they go to schools and give their all to play for free only to watch their coaches bolt at the first sign of greener grass. I say pay the kids or let them transfer at will.

Painting a little mascot’s a$$ white should qualify for consideration at being a rat. I can’t say for sure which coach did it, but I know it wasn’t Coach Willie or the other 2 defensive coaches that were fired only a few days before Christmas. If Coach Willie had been there I don’t think my a$$ would have been painted. Some coaches leave a school without warning and people look at them like they did something unconscionable and some schools fire coaches right before Christmas and think that’s a different deal. I am sitting in thinner right now so I may be controversial today.

A coach leaces a school on his own and he is tatraitor or worse. All it amounts too this day and time is who is going to screw who first. The coach bolts! The college fires the coach! If Kiffin and company tried to get the Tenn. recruits to decommit and then come to USC, then that’s really low. Keep in mind though that Petrino leaving the Falcons was the best thing that could have ever happened. He showed no class in the way he did it, but I think it was the very best thing that could have happened for the Falcons, Petrino, and maybe the Razorbacks. If Tennessee can land the right coach, maybe they will be better off also, in the long run.

Petrino is the biggest scumbag of all time. True Lane Kiffin is up there, but Petrino has zero class. Kiffin at least finished his season, and he had done what he could on the recruiting trail (even if that was kinda dirty). Petrino didn’t even have the balls to tell his team in person, he left them a note. YEA that’s a real man that I would want to send my son to, to play football. I don’t blame Kiffin, USC is a better job, just not how it should have been handled.

I actually think that Kiffin leaving for USC was the least offensive thing he did while in Knoxville. The guy is obnoxious and I can’t understand why the Vols hired him in the first place, let alone Southern Cal.. but coaches leave for their “dream job” all the time and don’t get this much flack.
I guess some of the vitriol is because we aren’t used to seeing a coache leave a program with the reputation and money that Tennessee has… but that was a hiring mistake. Why hire a young coach that has strong ties to another elite program? It was not a stretch to think that Pete Carrol might leave for the NFL in the near future and that Lane Kiffin might then want the USC job. I think this entire mess falls squarely on the AD at Tennessee, what a dumb hire that was.

really, this is a contest. Hmmm. Petrino leaves and NFL job for a lower tier SEC school – most college coaches aspire to become NFL head coaches not the other way around.
Kiffin leaves a top tier SEC school (but not the most prestigious position in the SEC by far) for one of THE top/most prestigious positions in college football. Their roster is stacked, I could coach USC to the BCS (and trust me – I am not flattering myself here).
USC is a half step from the NFL – the players are practically pros anyway – so if he wants back in the NFL, USC is the place to be.
Petrino was FAR and away the rat of all rats in NFL history. He could coach USC to 5 straight straight NCAA championships and I doubt anyone in the NFL would talk to him.

How many players came, or committed to Tennessee because of Lane Kiffin? How may players paychecks were affected by Bobby Petrino’s departure. In professional sports how many times do we hear players and management say, “this is a business.” I’m no Petrino fan, but he didn’t sit in players homes and convince them to come play for the Falcons, as for his departure, tasteless as it was, that’s just business.
As for Kiffin, he convinced young men to trust him and come to Tennessee. Then jumped ship at the first opportunity. I didn’t like Kiffin shortly after he came to Knoxville. He cheapened what had been a respectable, albeit struggling program. His last act shows what little loyalty he had to those men he wanted to be loyal to him. He gets my vote for the bigger rat. If I was a parent whose son was being recruited by a Lane Kiffin coached team, I would do all in my power to steer my son elsewhere. I gave him 3 years at Tennessee just based upon the negative light he brought to that program. I’ll reset the clock and give him 3 years @ USC. That is of course if some NFL team doesn’t come calling first.

Full discloser, I am an AR fan.
I don’t understand the venom directed at Petrino for the following reasons:
Petrino was not a good coach at Atlanta.
The Atlanta players hated Petrino and where thrilled to see him go.
Atlanta was better off without Petrino. Petrino was smart enough to know that he was not a good fit in the pros so he left to go do something he is good at.
Petrino probably figured the players would be celebrating that he was gone. He could have handled the situation much better obviously but having a feel good meeting when you are bitter toward the players and the players hate you seems rather dishonest.
Petrino did not hurt Atlanta as a team, Kiffin has dealt TN a bad hand.
Your points are biased in favor of Mr. Blanks version of events. Coach Petrino was not the only one who handled the situation badly but he is the only one who had enough class to not fight it out in the media.

By Bradley’s definition, 90% of the coaches in the SEC are rats for leaving their last coaching job- Richt left FSU with Bowden’s blessing and Houston Nutt was run out of Arkansas but I can’t think of another example like this. Meyer and Saban are clearly rats.

The atmosphere and rabid fan base of football, especially college ball has created this type mood. Most coaches nowdays have that “don’t give a damn attitude”. We all know as long as our team is winning the coach is the big hero. And could most likely stay where he’s at as long as he desires. However if he has a so-so season its time for a change, regardless of how many winning seasons he has had the past 10 or more years. There isn’t much loyalty to the coach so I’m sure theres not alot of loyalty from the coach to the school. Surely these coaches know how fast the average fan will turn on them in a bad season. So they may as well go when a better opportunity pops up. Thats the nature of college ball my fellow fans,

Every one is jumping down Kiffins back, and in the defending him, especially versus Petrino, I want to make it known, I’m not a fan of Kiffin but a fan of real life circumstance. If Kiffin goes to Tenn, and does a horrible job, he, fired, no questions asked the second thoughts given. If Kiffin didn’t stir the media as he did, probably more to invigorate life into the program, then because he believed half of what he said, his coaching ability wouldn’t come into question. Throw out the Oakland drama, no one has preformed well in that position in quite some time, see Al Davis. Now to reality, a reality not focused on stirring up fans that feel betrayed:
Kiffin to a good position at Tennessee, he helped to breath new life into a program that was seemingly on the decline. Taking the position, he couldn’t have imagined his dream job would come open within a year of his hiring, so how do you fault a person for going after there dream, be it the current one as it maybe. Petrino on the other hand didn’t leave the Falcons for a dream job, there’s not many coaches dreaming much about coaching at Arkansas as the pennacle of their career. In college football outside of Notre Dame, USC is right up there with the best positions to hold as a head coach. If a coach was hired to coach a program like Georgia State, did a decent job, and UGA came calling next year, not much would be made of his departure, outside of the students or fans of Georgia State, is it different because GSU is an upstart, is it different for taking a job for any major college program versus a lesser program. If you think it is somethings wrong with you not Kiffin, you wouldn’t tell James Doe, he is a rat for taking a job as a operations manager at UPS and leaving the blah blah corporation, so why is it different for a coach.
I’ll ask you this Mr. Bradley, your a writer for the Marietta Daily Journal for a year, now the AJC comes calling, now tell me you would stay at the AJC, tell me that lie.

Kiffin did a lot of damage to UT with his departure.
Petrino, did Falcon’s fans a favor with his departure and the ensuing house cleaning that took place. It never would have happened if he had stayed. Would just have been more of the same.

Petrino is worse, he quit during the season. While I disagree with what kiffin did, I can understand it, what is worse is the actions afterward. I believe that is his dream job, if he would’ve turned it down who knows who the next coach would’ve been and if kiffin would’ve had another chance. However, getting recruits on campus to not sign up for classes is inexcusable. Wasn’t kiffin the one that got mad because meyer supposeably called a recruit during a visit at tennessee? Kiffin just did basically the same thing.
I think Kiffin is a “rat” but I can understand why he did what he did. Petrino is worse, you don’t leave a team during the regular season.

Those of you who are wondering why Bammer fans will not admit that Saban is a lying, scumbag, POS and will defend him no matter what all you have to do is study about the Weimar Republic and the subsequent rise of Hitler. A once proud nation is disgraced and impoverished. Germany is a fourth place team in the West Division, I mean Western Europe. What do they do? They turn to a guy who wins. They turn to a guy who makes the trains run on time, and by any means necessary. Look Bama has just gone through the SEC like Hitler through Europe and you want them to take notice of the smell coming from the “work camps.” All I can say is good luck with that. It ain’t happening. At least not until he either leaves or loses 3 games in a season then the Bammers will turn on him and quick.
All I can say for us is that:
We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in Athens,
we shall fight in Knoxville and Jacksonville and Atlanta,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength through the air, and we shall defend our end zone, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight them on the ground,
we shall fight them in the trenches,
we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, our University were subjugated and starving, then our supporters would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, good once again triumphs over evil.

Obviously UT is better off without the Lame Brat Kitty because he would have ruined the program eventually. Now they can go out and get someone who actually can and wants to coach at UT. UT will be ok in the near future (assuming no probation – who knows just what Orgeron actually did in recruiting these kids?).

Kiffin took advantage of 18 year old kids trying to make the biggest decision of their life. Maybe some of you expert bloggers had all the answers when you were 18, but a lot of these kids were looking for guidance from Kiffin and Ogeron. He left these kids hung out to dry after selling them a bill of goods he couldn’t deliver. To do this to high school kids makes him the biggest RAT by a mile.
Petrino did not have the support of the players and they quit on him(after they argued with him). He didn’t have support of the owner, because he was still having a love affair with a criminal. The millionaire players still got their paychecks and got face time on ESPN. Petrino did the Falcons and their fans a great service by leaving because it forced them to get a GM and a new coach.
Personally, I thought the job at Arkansas was a better one than the Falcons, at that time.
UT will eventually become the winner out this situation, because Kiffin can’t coach and the NCAA is going to be all over him.Somebody get Gen Neyland another Bloody Mary.

As someone who is familiar with the Petrino ordeal, I’ll go with Kiffin being the bigger rat. Personally, I never really cared for Petrino, but the way the media has portrayed his departure is inaccurate to say the least. I don’t know if “reporters” such as yourself Mr. Bradley didn’t bother researching the whole story or if you just chose not to print it because it casts Mr. Blank in a bad light. Since Petrino left our program, I have grown to respect him for remaining quiet on the whole ordeal, choosing the high road while he has repeatedly attacked by those who have no clue as to how the whole situation really went down, and yes Mr. Bradley, that includes you. For starters, Bobby Petrino gained permission from Mr. Blank to speak with Arkansas, it was going to a mutual departure, Petrino wanted back in college (specifically the SEC) and Mr. Blank wasn’t happy with the direction of the team. Then comes the Michael Vick sentence and fearing a PR nightmare (losing both the head coach and star QB within 24 hours), Mr. Blank recanted and informed Coach Petrino that he was longer permitted to speak with the Arkansas officials. It was too late, and the rest is history.

I disagree. It is the head coaches job to decide how the staff treats/accepts one another. When Damien Williams and the number one QB prospect don’t fit your organization, then it’s time to re-evaluate your organization. Not gonna happen with HN. Watched him for 10 years, and it was obvious that we would see nothing new. He just would not adapt. I think we’re seeing this at Ole Miss. Heck of a running game….passing attack? Not so much.

To me it’s Petrino, hands down. All the reasons have pretty much been given above, but a couple to recap:
1)Promised Arthur Blank he was staying the day before he bolted
2)Left with 3 games to go in the regular season
3)Did not meet with his players to tell them he was leaving
I can’t believe Petrino is even able to get young men to commit to playing for him.
While I’ve always thought Lane Kiffin was an a$$, the only thing I found scummy was having Coach Oregoren (sp) call recruits to tell them not to attend class at UT, so they could transfer to USC. What a d-bag.
As I heard someone say last night
If I saw Kiffin coming to my door to recruit my son, I would certainly have some hard questions for him to answer.
If I saw Petrino coming to my door to recruit my son, I would just start shooting.

I think the bigger rats would be Bradley, Shultz, and AJC. They caved in to the same delusions that Kiffen has and thinks flashy attention headlines are more important than substance and truth. Incapable of actually putting forth articles with any merit they have caved in to the type of drive by journalism that is so common today. Driven by page views they use the lowest common denominators to spark interest.
Lately their articles seem to be driven more by personal opinion that any facts, and in most cases their opinions either seem to be biased or contradictory to the facts. Do I need to point out that the AJC has spent the last 14 months basically promoting Kiffen and his tactics and now they seem to want to take shots at him. They should just send him a check for the page views.

If you are going to call Bobby Petrino a rat for what he did, then shouldn’t you call Lou Holtz a rat also? In 1976, as head coach of the NY Jets, he quit after 13 games into his 1st season with them to take a head coaching vacancy at Arkansas. His W-L record with the Jets, 3-10.

You’re just to blinded by your anti alabama hatred to look objectively at things. Every time you post the article can have absolutely nothing to do with Alabama or Saban yet your dumb azz always has to find a way to make a degrading statement about either Bama or Saban.
And don’t even bother replying back Mr. Dorsey Dunce. We can’t hear you. We’re having a party and all the clanging from our latest national championship and our 7 other national titles and 22 conference titles is making too much noise. What is it Dorsey Dunce? 29 years and counting???

One thing that puzzles me the most about Kiffin though and it’s his dad. Supposedly and from all reports and testimonials he is one of the great minds in defensive football; however his son appears to be socially retarded with either at worst a very light (or no) grasp on the world around him; as though he’s in his own little bubble and at least, he couldn’t care less what anyone thinks about him. And then there’s his dad. We all have or had a dad, but his worked with him every day; day in, day out at UT and LK acted like (is?) a total fool for most of those 13 or so months. I know by age 33 or 34 you’re grown (or should be) but if I’m Monte Kiffin I’m saying, “son you need to tone it down a bit” or SOMETHING! Maybe it’s just me but MK is more enigmatic than LK. MK is a proven, highly respected authority (heck GURU) at the best level of football. LK is just a spoiled done-nothing brat into whose lap these tremendous jobs keep falling for some strange reason.
C. Cowherd said yesterday that LK has “it.” Really?! How about just a real smooth talker who has his daddy tagging along and Ed O out doing insane things on the recruiting trail. Without either of them around we know that his stint in the NFL was an absolute failure on all levels.

It’s a pretty sorry state when you have to compare ‘rats’. How anybody could take either of these two people seriously is beyond me. Petrino will do OK cause any team/school that has a pig for a mascot and is proud of it, won’t be able to ‘get it’ with him. As for Lame Lane, he might be able to put it over on the Southern Cal folks, after all at least half of everybody out there is a phony, so who’s to know which is which? Plus, if you can fool half of the people half of the time, you can probably last half the time.

QUESTION:
If a kid is NOT offered a scholarship or an offer to visit a school, how does a kid SWITCH? First and foremost, the kid has to APPLY to tthat school’s admissions board and be accepted. So if USC did not offer a visit to the kid that is selecting UT, how can that recruit GO to USC? Does USC have a list stating these UT recruits must be admitted? Orgeron stunk at Ole Miss. Had the USC job opened earlier, UT might be talking to TUBERVILLE, who, I think HAS BEATEN alabama and florida, more times than he’s lost to them. Eat the Humble Pie Hamilton and re hire Fulmer if you cannot get Muschamp to sign. Houston Nutt? Maybe-then neyland Stadium would be The NUTT HOUSE. Skip Holtz? Have not followed ECU’s conference. Cutcliffe-OC and QB Coach are his best qualities. Some OC’s are best at being OC rather than HC’s. Would love to see Tee Martin as the QB coach. Fulmer and Martin?-why not? Petrino left a “dead from the head down” Falcons team to go back to college (where he wanted to be since Blank lied to him about Vick’s status, to be fair to Blank, Vick lied to Blank too). Petrino had to leave then because of the recruiting time frame involved so it was either leave then and have a chance to get some recruits or finish the season and play your first season at Arkansas with scrubs. Kiffin left TN in the heat of the recruiting season AND after repeated NCAA violations. Kiffin wins this one hands down…
And for my fellow Falcons fans who can’t seem to get over the whole Petrino thing (you too Mark Bradley) GET OVER IT!!! Petrino leaving was good for all the parties involved, you should be happy and stop feigning vitriol toward him. The players didn’t like him when he was here and he didn’t like coaching them either. I think it’s telling that even with Petrino gone, guys like D. Hall and A. Crumpler were demanding trades out of Atlanta. Something was bad wrong with the organization and Petrino was only a small part of it.

Hey Pete – FYI before you use ALL CAPS…Petrino left the Falcons with 3 games left in the season, not in the MIDDLE of the season. They weren’t making the playoffs, they had nothing to play for (not even pride, since Vick took that away before training camp) and Petrino knew he didn’t want to coach in the NFL anymore at that point. I’ll recognize the elephant in the room here since nobody else wants to admit it…Petrino hurt the feelings of some Falcons fans. We all know the team was crap. Most of us realized something else was wrong when guys didn’t want to play for the Falcons anymore even AFTER Petrino was gone. Mike Smith is a better NFL coach than Petrino. Petrino is happier at Arkansas than he was with the Falcons. Petrino has Arkansas on the way up and the Falcon’s are in much better shape under Smith. Why can’t you people just admit Petrino made the right move when he left? To me, what Brian Kelly did to Cincy this season or what Butch Davis did at Miami a few years ago was MUCH worse than what Petrino did. Get over it already

Hey, its a business!! Coaches get fired for not going to bowl games back to back seasons! Fulmer couldnt produce even though he a just gone to SEC title game the year before, he was fired! Kiffin was only half-heartedly embraced by UT fans. The old guard, good ole boys, talked badly about him and wanted him gone. Everything new he tried to do, older fans would chastise him and threaten to no donate money. The kids, the players, are the ONLY losers. I believe Kiffin and Dad really did motivate the players and inspire them with fresh coaching techniques! Like the early post said, we all would gladly take OUR DREAM JOB for MORE MONEY!! Rural KNoxville? Sunny Cali? REALLY? Its life, sometimes life sucks. Never can predict what will happen, just be ready for it. Wish Kiffin well, and its on to the next one…

Someday Petrino will leave the hogs, but I doubt we will be crying about it years later. It’s called the life of college football. Coaches come and coaches go – you people are acting like a head coach personally lead you down to the altar and exchanged vows. Grow up and see sports for what they are – the bottom line.

Tewks – Thanks and I’m not trying to debate you on this, but do you know how it was handled by Petrino or do you just know what ESPN and the Falcon’s have said? I know one of the agents involved in all of this and I can tell you without a doubt, we don’t know how Petrino WANTED to handle this situation. Someone earlier wrote that Petrino wasn’t allowed to speak with the players, that is true…but even if he was allowed, I doubt he would have done it as that team had turned against him because he demanded discipline from them and they wouldn’t respond so he had really “lost” the team. He wanted out of the NFL in a bad way because of that and I have a hard time blaming him. As for that midnight press conference where he called the Hogs…not his idea and I bet if he had to do it over again he would refuse to do it, but you also have to remember just a few months earlier, Arkansas hired Dana Altman to coach the basketball team only to have him bolt a week later to go back to Creighton and had also entered negotiations with 3 other coaches only to have them use it as leverage at their current schools for more money, so the Arkansas folks wanted to get him into Fayetteville and get him on TV as their new coach as soon as possible.

Neither is the bigger rat. The true big fat rat in all of this is the NCAA. They have kids working and generating massive amounts of income, yet they are not adequately compensated. These same kids who attract these tremendous fan bases at sold out stadiums, excessive merchandise sales, and phenomenal television revenues are continued to be exploited by helping these coaches to outrageous salaries, that are in no way indicative of their true value to their respective schools.

Bobby Petrino was such a bad hire on so many levels. I blame Blank for the Petrino debacle almost as much as I blame Petrino. That guy had no business being around an NFL team. The Falcons also had a bunch of idiots like DeAngelo Hall on the team at the time and added to the Mike Vick disaster: it just made the season an absolute train wreck. With that being said, Blank has learned from his mistakes and been more hands off. He hired a quality GM and a solid coaching staff. So in retrospect, it turned out to be a good thing for the Falcons.

Young Mister Kiffen lied to and left high & dry a bunch of young guys just starting or in college, after promising them the world. Not only did he lie to those athletes who were already at Tennessee, he went out and cherry picked the kids he had been recruiting to come to Big Orange to follow him out west to the bright lights and big city of USC.

But I have to give it to Kiffin. He showed up, cause such a stir and acted like he was all that and more. Then he just jumps ship to greener pastures. Petrino left with his tail tucked between his leg because he knew he couldn’t coach NFL players. Kiffin dumped on a bunch of kids (even if they are all felons) for another school.

Yesterday, M Bradley suggested that UGA and CMR were “radioactive” given the BIG misses for the HDC. Right? Is that what you wrote?
How about UT for the Head Coaching position? Hmmmmmm? Muschamp, Gruden, FULMER, Calhoun and Smart and Peterson ALL HAVE SAID ” I PASS” now that IS a radioactive program, giventhat we are probably talking about a $2.000,000.00 salary ++.
To turn UGA down because you already have a $750,000 salary is not surprsing at all. To turn down a $2 mill salary is very suggestive of radioactivity, Bradley. I know that you would agree.
Fulmer will see Hamilton FIRED and Cutcliff will be HC and they will end up ok. I am a UGA man not one from UT. I just like accuracy is all. Derek Dooley is also in the HC mix at UT. Amazing, what has he ever done in Big Boy football?

Arkansas wanted a coach that could come in immediately to finish up the recruiting vacancy that was left when we fired Houston Nutt. If Petrino would have waited 3 weeks he wouldn’t have got the job. Unless your ignornant to the ways of college football, recruiting is everything. He wanted out of the Atlanta “job” and made the right decision. It’s all business. And if someday he sees a more lucrative job out there, than more power to him. You won’t see us shedding a tear. Why, because it’s business. I hope he stays for a long time.

Mars – I have it on very good authority that statement you call “misinformation” is true. If Mark Bradley wants to chime in and if he has the sources, he knows I’m right too. Petrino has not said much at all about the situation in Atlanta and he says it’s because it wouldn’t do anybody any good. I only wish Blank held those same feelings.
You people who keep saying Petrino could have left the Falcons “no harm no foul” if he had just stayed till the end of the season know NOTHING about college football. He would have missed the recruiting period had he done that and severely hurt his chances of being successful at Arkansas. He wasn’t going to be a success in Atlanta so why would it matter if he left at the end of the season or with 3 games remaining? It wouldn’t…and don’t give me the “class” argument either. Very few college football coaches show class by that definition. They all jump ship for bigger and better jobs. And how many of you would do it too? I would venture a guess to say better than 75% of us would and how many of you are willing to step up and say you have no class? I’ll venture another guess and say less than 75%…so now you understand why some people think you’re full of crap for still harboring ill feelings toward Bobby Petrino.

Why not many colored coaches ? Because most of the top athletes are black and leave early for the NFL and these days most college coaches get their start as graduate assistants. 1. You think that because Bobby Petrino left your beloved Falcons that he is a bad Coach? One of the first names mentioned when Urban Myer had “retired” was Bobby Petrino. I can’t believe we RUSHED that all important coaching search to settle for a Bobby Petrino.
2. Recruiting is EVERYTHING in college football. You can have a Mack Brown or a Nick Saban all day and without players they don’t win.
3. Like I said, college and pro sports is all about business. We’re not married to these guys, nor them to us.

Alphare – You can’t bait me into defending Arthur Blank for the Petrino hire. It’s clear that Petrino is a college coach and he’s better off at Arkansas and the Falcons are better with Mike Smith. I get angry at the hate spewed toward Petrino by so-called Falcons fans, I really don’t understand it. Why can’t you people just realize everybody is better off this way and let it go?
As for the other hires, how many coaches actually “work out” and by what criteria do you judge that? The nature of college football today (and that’s not just in the south mind you, I believe Boston College had a little drama last year too) is coaches will bail on their schools and players in a heartbeat for more money and a more prestigious job. Until the NCAA steps in and forces people to live up to contracts, this won’t change. The very least they can do is decide on a window for coaches to change jobs and/or adjust the recruiting windows to allow for the impact of coaches changing jobs.

Mike, I agree with you…the NCAA is scared of change so nothing will happen. I’m not trying to promote any ideas to change it either. I do know this though, until there is no more money in college football, coaches are going to leave for bigger and better jobs. The ramifications of that affect a lot of people: assistant coaches, players already on the roster, signed recruits, potential recruits, sponsors of those schools, etc…I really believe those are just the breaks you have to deal with if you’re one of those others affected. If you don’t like it, get into another line of business. If you’re an athlete on that team, play your best, impress the new coach and if you’re good enough, you may have a future in the NFL and if not, you’ll get a college degree. Nobody owes these players anything with regard to their development as a football player or basketball player. I feel sorry for some of them really…I do, but bad things happen to good people all the time. Great people figure out a way to thrive in the midst of trouble.

He met with Auburn officials in Southern Indiana while Tubberville was still the coach, lied about the meeting to the media and the UofL AD and had 3-4 more incidents. HE IS A RAT – HE WILL NEVER WIN THE TITLE because for all his X’s and O’s knowledge, players do not trust him; do not like him and his is a LOSER!! Go Cards – Charlie Strong is a real man!!

Kiffin is the worst. He lied to incoming recruits and left UT’s recruiting in state of limbo. NFL teams don’t recruit, they select. The 678, January 14th, 2010, 3:41 pm:
Petrino is the bigger rat!! Nick Saban is a close second!! (ask Michigan State, LSU and Miami Dolphin fans) Alabama fans need to keep a close eye on his door!!
I’m an Alabama alumnus and fan, but I admit to not having the interest or knowledge in football goings-on that most bloggers on here have.
I tried to research why Nick Saban was mentioned derogatively in a few posts on the subject of Kiffin’s recent move. But simply pronouncing Saban a rat doesn’t tell me much.
I did find out that Saban resigned Michigan State in 1999 with a 9-2 season before the bowl game — which they won anyway.
Any coach that would resign before finishing the season is probably using bad public relations judgement. And I was critical of Urban Meyer for bringing about so much confusion before Florida’s bowl game this year.
But what would LSU fans have to be sore about? Under Saban’s direction, they won their 2nd national championship in 2003. And he adamantly refused to discuss rumors about going to Alabama before finishing the season with the Miami Dolphins.
Saban has been with Alabama three years and he just led us to our 13th national championship. This makes him only the 2nd coach ever to win national championships for more than one team.
As far as I’m concerned, if he wants to head for that door, then “Great job! Thanks for everything! Good luck! — except when we play any of your teams in the future.”
Is it simply a matter that relationships typically end badly — or they wouldn’t end at all?

I am sick of idiot journalist who keep on bringing up a coach that left a team that was 3-10, and didn’t even have the players that he agreed to coach. Oh wait, he should have stayed and tried to win those last three games so his team could have finished at 6-10, then it would be ok to leave. That makes no sense. Mark- There’s no comparison, Kiffin finished the season. So what if he left after only one season, everyone leaves at some point. Few people turn down their dream job out of loyalty to a company to whom they were employed for a little over a year. Petrino abandoned everyone, mid-season, during the darkest chapter in Falcons history. His exit was the most disgraceful act I’ve seen from a football coach. This is coming from a man who shook Tommy Tuberville’s hand in the Ole Miss AD’s office as TT delivered an unsolicited pledge to win a national championship, less than two weeks later he accepted the Auburn position. I also lived in Tuscaloosa during the Dubose, Price, Franchione saga. I wish nothing but the worst for Petrino.

Some of you have tried to compare Arthur Blank firing Dan Reeves with 3 games left with Petrino leaving with 3 games left. However, your premise is completely WRONG. Blank offered to let Dan Reeves coach the remaining three games but Reeves chose to decline the offer. Blank had promised to let him know if he ever decided to make a change and he did just as he promised.
Both Kiffin and Petrino are scum of the earth and why their current schools want them is beyond belief. I personally think Petrino is worse due to his lie to Blank and his absolute cowardliness in refusing to face his players. These guys have zero character or integrity and are all about themselves, to the extreme.
Students at schools other than USC on the West coast refer to USC as the University of Spoiled Children, because they are a bunch of rich, snobs. Kiffin fits in perfectly as a spoiled brat.

The Biggest Rat is the Sports Betting Services whom people actually pay out good money to for a winning bet. For anyone actually dumb enough to pay for this worthless dribble, I have a proposition: You pay me $100.00 and I will give you a guaranteed winner in the Arizona vs.New Orleans contest. If you don’t win with my “Lock of the Week”, I will gladly refund 100% of the cost of this service. Remember, you have to bet REALLY BIG on this one because it is my personal “Lock of the Week”. Bet BIG on this one game because it will make up for all the losses you’ve had all year. Now, if you’re a mind to, I can let you have the “Special Divisional Lock” for only $300.00. Of course, it has the same guarantee. (What I won’t tell you is the $100.00 Lock is Arizona and the $300.00 Lock is New Orleans. Either way I win. You only have a 50% chance of winning. We balance our “Picks” just like the bookies do, only instead of 10% juice, I have your credit card account charged after the game for an easy windfall. I also now have your personal telephone number to harass you daily to run up an even bigger tab. I just won’t tell you all this. Trust me on this one – you’ll find out.)

It is such a silly notion that reporters carry on like this about a coach changing jobs. Not one reporter would urge that his option to pursue other jobs be censured in the way reporters constantly censure coaches.
This all to predictable visceral reaction prompts a few questions:
1. When do reporters find it acceptable for a coach to seek other employment? If not after one season, then after two, three, four?
2. If it’s not right that a coach accept a better paying position, then is it only acceptable if they accept a lesser paying position?
3. Why is it offensive that a coach seek another job soon after his current team’s season ends? When else would it be better? In mid-season? Just before the start of the next season?
I suppose given the level of discontent among reporters that it’s considered a black ball offense if a reporter leaves one news network or paper for another? We all know the answer to that question, just like we know the answers to the others.
The truth is reporters change jobs all the time, do so on frequent timelines, and are always on the outlook for a better paying and more prestigious opportunity. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course. What’s disappointing is the rank hypocrisy with which reporters act when reviewing coaches doing the same!

“AJC sports columnist Mark Bradley is a blogging fool. But you knew that already.”
No I didn’t, but I know it now. Petrino left the Atlanta Chickadees when it turned out his quarterback was too busy murdering dogs to learn how to win football teams, and his bosses failed to tell him.

How is Kiffin a rat? If someone offered you your dream job would you drop your current job and take it? Yea that’s what I thought.
USC is a 100x better program than Tennessee. USC is the #1 school in one of the hottest recruiting states (California). You just can’t get that kind of recruiting in Tennessee. Sorry Vol fans.

Petrino took a 1.3 million dollar pay cut while its rumored Kiffen left Tennesse for more money. Seems to me like Petrino just wasn’t happy living in Atlanta.

It is good thing Petrino the rat skipped town in the dark. With Petrino rat coaching the Falcons we would not have got any where, Why? He doen’t know how to coach men. He only knows how to piss them off. His college motivational techinique of threat and intimidation would not have worked.
Didn’t Glanville use threat and intimidation for motivation? Did it work? Din’t think so.

I think the bigger rat is the one who wrote this article. An owner can fire a coach for no reason, but when a coach leaves without warning you label him as a shameless rat. I think the problem is the media.. I can’t blame Petrino for leaving the Falcons. He wasn’t happy in the NFL, and if your not happy then get out. After all it’s a job coaching a GAME. It’s not like he’s saving the world.
